James David "Jamie" Muir, a talented drummer and percussionist and brief member of King Crimson, who left the world of pop music and show business to retreat to a Buddhist monastery in Scotland before dedicating himself almost entirely to painting, passed away last year at the age of 81. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1942, Jamie Muir attended the College of Art there in the 1960s. Early on, he was drawn to jazz.
Later settling in London, Jamie Muir played jazz trombone before turning to percussion. Influenced by American drummers like Tony Williams, Kenny Clarke, and Milford Graves, as well as musicians such as Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler, he gravitated toward free music, meaning improvisation. It was during this time that he began assembling an arsenal of household objects he later used alongside his standard drum kit: rattles, whistles, horns, chimes, bells, gongs, sheets of metal, shakers, drums, and plastic bottles.
After a brief stint in a multimedia group, Jamie Muir worked with choreographer Lindsay Kemp (as did David Bowie), played music in the short-lived jazz-rock group Sunship (with guitarist Allan Holdsworth, formerly of Soft Machine), and became involved in the ensemble known as The Music Improvisation Society, with Derek Bailey, Hugh Davies, and Evan Parker between 1968 and 1971. The Music Improvisation Society recorded an album for the ECM label in 1971 (never reissued on CD except in Japan) and a posthumous album (1968–71). Both records gained a cult following among fans of experimental and improvised music. After this experience, Muir played in Pete Brown’s Battered Ornaments and then in the band Boris with Jamie Peters, Don Weller, and former Colosseum member Jim Roache. He also briefly joined Assagai, an Afro-rock group featuring South African and Nigerian musicians from the legendary South African band Blue Notes (including drummer Louis Moholo, saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, and trumpeter/flutist Mongezi Feza).
In the summer of 1972, Robert Fripp, leader and guitarist of King Crimson, whom a journalist from *Melody Maker* had suggested meet this percussionist from the English experimental scene, invited Jamie Muir to join the new King Crimson lineup he was assembling: Robert Fripp (guitar, mellotron), David Cross (violin), John Wetton (bass), Bill Bruford (drums), and Jamie Muir (percussion). "King Crimson was the ideal for me because it was a rock band that had more than three brain cells. I was very much more an instrumental style of musician rather than being song-based, and there weren’t many other bands that I would have been any good in. I was extremely pleased and felt completely at home with Crimson." Once formed, the new group honed their sound on stage from early October to mid-December 1972 (see the 1972 live albums in the discography below), before recording the album Larks’ Tongues in Aspic in early 1973. A grand album, one of the band’s best, and one of the best of the 1970s.
However, after a concert at the Marquee Club in London, Jamie Muir left not only the band but also the music world entirely, with immediate effect. During the six months Muir spent with King Crimson, his presence completely upended the group’s philosophy, loosening the notoriously strict rules imposed by Fripp and pushing the boundaries of improvisation. Jamie Muir’s contribution—clearly heard on Larks’ Tongues in Aspic—was to introduce a touch of anarchy into Robert Fripp’s music, which was usually so tight, rational, and meticulously structured.
Muir returned to Scotland, to the Samye Ling Monastery near Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway (in the south), where he spent several years as a Buddhist monk, the pleasures of his former life giving way to retreat and meditation.
Muir came back to London and music in the 1980s, playing and recording with Derek Bailey and Evan Parker from the Music Improvisation Company, as well as with former King Crimson member Michael Giles on the soundtrack for the independent British film Ghost Dance (1983).
In 1990, Muir left music behind once more and increasingly devoted himself to painting, a discipline he maintained until his death. In his later years, he began exploring digital art as another form of expression.
In recent years, he lived in Penzance, Cornwall, where he passed away in February 2025.

It’s something we often notice in this forum—and many others—this behavioral shift.
A long-time member, or even a new one, asks a question. They get one or more answers, some brief, some detailed, and then... nothing???
Not even a simple thank you!!!
From what I’ve gathered, if the answers don’t align with what they wanted to hear, it seems natural for the asker to just disappear!! 😕 Unless—(and I fear this is the case)—basic politeness is no longer part of our society????

Call for postcards for a school project (Creuse, ULIS program)
Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out to all travelers and globe-trotters on this forum. I’m a teacher in Creuse working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m launching a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of this journal will focus on opening up to the world, embracing differences, travel, global cultures, and more.
I’m putting out a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a postcard (from France or anywhere in the world)! The goal is to help us "travel" and discover new places, countries, and horizons in a way that’s much more fun and exciting than a geography textbook. One section of our journal could be called "We received a letter from ," where we’d research the location and share what we learn with our readers—a really enriching activity for the classroom.
The project starts in September 2025 but doesn’t have a strict end date, since this journal and world-discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in the ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! The kids will find them when they return.
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible, and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow travelers. Help us dream and explore!

Second trip to Sardinia from 05/01/25 to 05/11/25
Following my first trip from May 1st to 11th, 2025:
-Flight: easyJet Geneva-Olbia 11:50 AM-1:20 PM (306 € for 2) + 102 € for checked baggage (408 € total)
-Flight: easyJet Cagliari-Geneva 12:45 PM-2:25 PM (308 € for 2)
-Car rental: Olbia-Cagliari (rental: 338.31 € + 120 € for one-way drop-off) + 320 € mandatory insurance imposed by Centauro) 778.31 € total
*May 1st: ***OLBIA: arrived at the airport at 3:15 PM: 1-hour delay with EasyJet! 😕 Car rental issue** Big scam with B Rent (hard to find their counter because of poor signage—they demanded an extra 320 €! But after 5.5 hours, Centauro also charged 320 € for insurance!!!) On top of that, we only got the car at 6:30 PM. *May 2nd: -Heading to Isola Tavolara: boat from San Paolo. It was a holiday weekend, and all the Sardinians plus tourists were heading to the island. Everyone wanted to visit the cave and all the beaches—so crowded we gave up. Plus, we had to wait for the first departure at 11 AM with a return no earlier than 2 PM, and all boats left at the same time, so everyone ended up at the cave simultaneously! We’re a family with kids aged 10 and 12, and we’ll be in Sri Lanka during the Kandy Esala Perahera. I’d love to know if it’s really worth prioritizing the procession on the final night—is it that different? What do the other nights miss out on? From what I’ve gathered, you can watch for free if you’re okay with sitting on the ground, which isn’t an issue for us. In that case, is it still easy to get a good view? We’ll be coming from Jaffna—are train tickets to Kandy harder to get during the Perahera? Also, August 8th is a public holiday. Do trains still run on public holidays?

Trek in Nepal's Far West: Between Mountains and Yarsagumba Harvesting

We went to Nepal last October and literally fell in love with this country (like so many others, it seems). During our trek, we had the chance to meet and travel with an incredible independent local guide, Apsara Luitel. She told us about a unique project she’s organizing starting mid-May, and we wanted to share it in case it interests anyone. We mentioned it on another travel forum, but just in case, we’re posting it here too to reach as many people as possible.
Apsara, who knows the Api mountain valley (a name as joyful as it is intriguing!) in Nepal’s Far West (on the border between India and Tibet, at the edge of the world) perfectly, is offering an off-the-beaten-path trek for a group of 3 to 8 people max. The program? An authentic and preserved itinerary combining homestays and small mountain lodges, all the way to the Api base camp. Once at base camp, locals will guide us to secret spots only they know, where we’ll harvest yarsagumba (those famous caterpillar-fungi, rare and prized for their medicinal properties in traditional Chinese medicine—they were going for $20,000 per kilo last year!).
Mid-May is the ideal time to discover this almost unexplored region and take part in harvesting these natural treasures. This kind of adventure, led by an inspiring young woman like Apsara, is rare, and we think it could appeal to Nepal lovers and those who enjoy authentic treks far from the usual tourist routes.
No matter how many participants there are (between 3 and 8), there will always be two guides: Apsara, who speaks English (and is learning French!), and a French-speaking guide. The dates are flexible around May 15th, depending on the availability of those who’d like to take on the adventure.

Les manifestants, eux, étaient mobilisés dans Black Lives Matter, d’une ampleur sans équivalent depuis le Mouvement des droits civiques, qui a surgi à travers le pays suite à la mort violente, par asphyxie, infligée par une patrouille de police de Minneapolis à George Floyd, quadragénaire afro-américain devenu symbole des nombreuses morts aux mains de policiers très majoritairement blancs, désormais équipés militairement, et presque jamais sanctionnés. Le meurtre de George Floyd à Minneapolis a suscité une vage d’émotions et un sursaut civique dans la société us-américaine. Dans la tristesse des événements à Minneapolis, je pense et renvoie à une chanson de la défunte reine du gospel américain, Mahalia Jackson, « God shall wipe all tears away », à nouveau enregistré en 2016 par le Kronos Quartet & le Trio Da Kali avec la magnifique chanteuse malienne, Hawa 'Kassé Mady' Diabaté (fille du plus grand chanteur traditionnel malien, Kassé Mady Diabaté). Kronos est revenu sur l’enregistrement de cette chanson comme un hymne de tristesse et d’espoir. La chanson est – à plusieurs égards – en rapport avec Black Lives Matter : Mahalia Jackson qui a enregistré son premier gospel (tiré du Livre des Révélations 21, et la musique écrite par Thomas A. Dorsey) à la fin des années 30, était très impliquée dans le Mouvement des droits civiques et était d’ailleurs sur le podium aux côtés de Martin Luther King lors de son célèbre discours au Lincoln Memorial en 1963. Je cherche à envoyer des manuels scolaires de 1ere et de Terminale, série S, à l'étranger (, ils m'ont été donnés à la suite de la réforme avec les tablettes).
Ils risquent d'être jetés et je préfèrerais grandement les donner à ceux qui en ont besoin ! Je suis prête à payer les frais de transport, aussi je suis consciente que ces manuels requièrent déjà un certain niveau d'enseignement et qu'il ne pourront pas être envoyés partout.
Merci de me faire savoir si vous avez une association (ou autre) qui permettrait à ces manuels de trouver bons acquéreurs !!
PS : Je ne pourrait les expédier qu'à partir de juillet, date à laquelle les manuels de Terminale ne me seront plus d'aucune utilité.

En ce temps de confinement, le temps devient texture, palpable , vivant et fécond.
Surgissent des idées, des envies de faire urgemment ce que l'on a toujours repoussé à plus tard.
Donc un petit carnet de voyage sur notre court séjour à Séville, Cordoue et Grenade au mois de Mai 2019.
Séville : Dès notre atterrissage tôt le matin - nous avons eu la chance d'avoir un vol direct de Nice - nous déposons nos affaires à notre appartement AirBNB idéalement situé à côté de la cathédrale.
De là, nous pouvons tout faire à pied. Le 1er matin : le magnifique parque de Maria Luisa et la Plazza de España
L'après midi nous visitons la cathédrale et flânons dans les rues commerçantes autour. Nous avons choisi de découvrir la cathédrale au moment le plus chaud de la journée pour profiter de la fraîcheur intérieure de cette grande bâtisse.

Et puis la Calle Castelar et les ruelles adjacentes. On se réserve une soirée flamenco dans le quartier Santa Cruz en soirée.

Prendre le temps de cuisiner, un peu plus que d'habitude. S'adonner aux bons petits plats déjà testés et approuvés ; tenter des nouvelles recettes. Découvertes !
Ne pas oublier l'apéro avec les amis. Apéro-téléphone ! Déjà testé, et approuvé.
Pause quotidienne sur VF, plonger dans quelques carnets de voyages. Discuter de nos voyages. A la maison. Lire ces messages des personnes coincées loin de chez eux, et qui n'aspirent qu'à une chose, légitimement : rentrer à la maison !

Réservation camping de Yosemite impossible: des plans "B"? English translation pending
Salut à tous,
Nous partons en famille, début juillet dans le grand Ouest américain. On a réservé pas mal d'hébergements: campings et motels. Et on a attendait bien sagement l'ouverture des réservations pour les camping de Yosemite et là, patatra!!! Full en 15 secondes!
Du coup, on se questionne sur le fait d'y aller quand-même ou pas parce que beaucoup de bouchons en cette saison...Des tensions inutiles en cette fin de voyage, etc.

Ensuite nous devions repasser par LV , 2 nuits à Monolake et 4 nuits à Yosemite... et retour avion LV.
Mais là ça change tout...on hésite même à rester en Utah, pour manger moins de bornes avec nos filles.

Bonjour amis voyageurs, plus je parcours les différents carnets de voyages plus l envie d aller au Nicaragua grandît.
Il y a quelques moi j ai laissé filer des billets à 630e en partant de paris ( ma ville) et il se trouve qu aujourd’hui ces derniers frôlent les 750euros.

Nous avons réservé nos vol Genève-Dumaguète passant par Dubai et Manille à partir de go-voyage. Après discussion avec certains d'entres vous, il semble que nos escales soient trop courtes pour avoir nos avions. Hier, une opératrice go-voyage m'a expliqué que si nous rations un de nos vols, tous les autres seraient annulés car nous serions considérés comme sortant du système.... En gros, si on rate un avion à l'aller, tous nos vols sont supprimés et on doit tout repayer.... Gloups!!! C'est la douche froide. Nos hôtels sont réservés, j'aimerais ne pas tout annuler, simplement Go-voyage (on perd 400e mais c'est moins pire que 2000). Pourriez-vous m'expliquer comment organiser nos vols avec garantie de ne pas se retrouver en rade si retard d'un avion... Comment faites vous pour faire Lyon-Dumaguète ou Genève-Dumaguète?

Je n'envisage pas d'acheter le pass car je ne devrais pas le rentabiliser, mais en regardant pour acheter des billets pour l'EBS ou pour Top of the Rock, il faut réserver des dates et créneaux horaires ce qui ne m'arrange pas.
Comment ça se passe alors avec le pass ? Besoin ou pas de réserver ? Si c'est plus souple, peut-être prendrai-je le pass quand même. Je précise que j'ai déjà pris des billets pour la statue de la liberté avec accès à la couronne.

Nous partons à Da nang le 4 février à 2 pour 30 jours de visites, découvertes, ballades et repos tranquillou !
Nous avons de ne faire que le centre de façon à réserver le nord pour une autre saison et le sud pour une autre année (donc on ne descendrait pas jusqu' Dalat) !
Nous avons épluché le routard et le lonely et parcouru le forum qui regorge d'informations passionnantes ........et c'est le pb car nous ne savons plus comment orienter notre séjour. Aussi je pose les questions en vrac .
1/ ce qui est fixé :
arrivé à Danang et direct à Hoi An = 7 jours pour rayonner
puis Hué = 4 ou 5 jours ?? (nous aimons prendre notre temps)
2/ Ensuite reste donc 17 ou 18 jours pour faire Kontum, Buon Ma Thuot et remonter vers Da nang en faisant une ou 2 escales sur des plages : Doc let ? Qui Nhon (bai Xep ?)
Que pensez vous de la faisabilité en fonction des temps de transport ? Quelles sont les durées de transports ? N'est-ce pas "redondant" de faire une étape à Kontum et à BMT sachant que nous n'aimons pas faire des escales de moins de 2 jours ? Est-ce possible d'aller en louant une moto visiter seul les villages à la journée ? et les campagnes environnantes ?
Pour la remontée et escale plage (avant retour dans froid et grisaille parisienne) vos avis ?
