Bonus tip: Pinyin (the Chinese phonetic alphabet) is super helpful for reading street signs or menus. For example, “Nǐ hǎo” is pronounced “Nee how”—easy to remember!

struggling to find a decent flight to Thailand?????

Hi everyone, I’ve been traveling in Asia for over 30 years, often to Thailand, but only during the school holidays in February, April, and especially in the summer, departing from Marseille or Lyon.

For some time now, I’ve noticed it’s really hard to find a flight at a reasonable price (under 900 €) and, more importantly, with a decent itinerary (we’re often offered 2 or 3 layovers with total travel times of 40 or even 50 hours), and this is the case almost a year in advance. This is something we never saw even 4 years ago—I’m wondering: are there fewer flights available now...?

I briefly set out to tally things up, having asked myself the same question, and here are some figures and my thoughts on the travel journals that have seen the greatest success over more than 22 years—the first one was posted on 04/17/2003.

Before sharing the TOP 25, I notice that the United States of America seems to have sparked the most interest among readers: 11 out of the 25 most read. The American dream is still very much alive. With passionate travelers, too, since there are often many participants (quite chatty ones), which significantly boosts the number of views. Since VF was hosted in Canada, maybe there’s also a fair number of Canadian readers adding to that?

Asia comes in second with 8 journals, confirming the appeal of these destinations. We also see 4 Europe-related journals in this best-of.

The numbers are undeniable, but they should be put into perspective. For example: - A journal published a long time ago has a better chance of being widely read than a more recent one. - A journal published all at once will get fewer visitors than one published over 30 days, recounting a month-long trip. - Some journals have renewed readability because their author or readers add information or comments.

You could also say that a journal with 5,000 views about Ireland or Iceland, for instance, doesn’t fall short compared to those about a more popular destination like the U.S., which might have tens of thousands of views.

Personally, I regret the absence from the ranking of journals I admired—both very well-written and featuring stunning photos. On the other hand, the presence of some journals in the most-read list is quite puzzling to me.

Three distinct periods stand out: - The 2000s. It took some time for the site to become known and for word-of-mouth to spread. Back then, some people, especially older travelers (who are more likely to both travel and publish journals on VF), didn’t even have internet yet. Plus, many journals from that era had few or no photos, which doesn’t attract some readers. - The early 2010s. There was probably a peak, an optimal moment, with the site being more well-known and visible, and a generation of travelers ready to share and help. With few exceptions, all the most-read journals date from 2006 to 2016. - From the late 2010s onward, there may have been a turning point. Fewer people enjoying (or knowing how to) read, more people moving to various social media platforms for their immediacy and ease?

I’m not unhappy to be in 26th place with my 2013 journal about a part of southern Thailand. I owe it largely to the photos of the adorable langur monkeys and the messages from all those who went to see them thanks to me. Those were good times that will be hard to relive.

Hi there, I’m facing a rather unusual issue with SAUDI AIRLINES. I booked a flight to Jakarta with a layover in Jeddah for July directly on their website on February 25th, paying for our three tickets via PAYPAL. I quickly received confirmation that my flight was booked and our e-tickets were issued. However, after several days, I noticed we were never charged for the tickets, and I saw on our PayPal account that the payment authorization was still pending.

At first, I chalked it up to cross-border or banking delays… but since I use PayPal often and the debit from my bank account is usually almost immediate, I called PayPal. They told me that neither they nor I had anything more to do: when a transaction is paid using their solution, the payment is systematically validated by the seller before the transaction (an automated process, I imagine). However, PayPal confirmed that SAUDI hadn’t done this and that they had a month to do so, otherwise the transaction would be canceled by PAYPAL and SAUDI wouldn’t receive the funds. There must have been a technical glitch because normally, I shouldn’t have received the tickets until they had received the payment.

Given the reviews I’ve read about their customer service, I’m worried they might cancel our tickets without notice once they realize their mistake—or that they’ll ask us to pay the amount at that point (since the closer we get to the date, the higher the price goes).

So, I’ve been trying to contact them nonstop via their app (I’ve submitted about 10 tickets), I’ve called them, messaged them on Messenger and Instagram, and so far, I haven’t gotten any response. Either they don’t read my message to the end and just reply that the flight is confirmed + resend the tickets, or more recently, they tell me the issue is being handled by another department. We tried calling them again on Saturday, but no luck—the French-speaking agents were always busy. On Messenger, they keep asking for the secret code sent by SMS at the start of the conversation, but of course, I never receive anything even though my number is correctly registered in my SAUDI account.

I don’t know what else to do, and I’m not sure if I’m right to worry they might cancel our tickets.

I’m afraid this could jeopardize our dream trip, for which I’ve already booked hotels and activities… and we were really looking forward to it.

Huge disappointment. I’d seen that Friendly Shoe Shop was recommended by a blog. I went there with the intention of buying a small leather backpack. I visited once for a look around, then went online to compare prices with shops in Europe, like Marius, which specializes in leather. I realized that for the same price ($145 US), I could find the same thing in Paris. I went back to Friendly Shoe Shop and tried to see if it was possible to negotiate. The saleswoman immediately reacted. With a smile, she took the bag, put it back on display, and told me: "If you want to negotiate, go to the market!" Basically, she was telling me to get lost. You can easily apologize by saying prices are fixed and non-negotiable, but it’s unacceptable to react that way when the prices are excessive. It’s really taking tourists for a ride.

When you know the cost of living in Vietnam, this price is nothing short of a scam. I’m not questioning the quality of the product. If the workers were paid 3 or 5 times the normal rate, I wouldn’t mind. But there’s no indication that’s the case.

In summary, in Hoi An, you have the choice between: - Quality shops where you’ll pay the same price as in a European capital, which gives the owner a huge margin since they don’t pay import taxes, transportation costs, and manufacture directly, etc. - Counterfeit shops where you won’t pay much for mediocre quality.

Friendly Shoe Shop has nothing friendly or fair about it. It’ll suit people who travel for two or three weeks, have the means, and want to say when they get home that they bought a bag or shoes in Hoi An. For everyone else, there’s nothing fair about it…

For my upcoming trip to Thailand, I’ve narrowed it down to Emirates and Air India and would love to hear recent feedback from members who’ve flown with them.

I’ve noticed on several sites that reviews for both airlines are pretty negative. I’m not surprised about Air India, but I read they’ve been acquired.

I flew Emirates twice in 2018 and was surprised by the drop in recent reviews. It almost makes me think of Etihad, which I initially liked but then declined (I’m not sure what their situation is like now).

Where? It’s all in the title. On the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, more precisely in the northwest between Fukuoka and Nagasaki. I hope to take you along with me for 19 nights and 18 full days this autumn of 2024. On the itinerary: gastronomy, crafts, festivals, waterfalls, encounters, and leisurely strolls in all simplicity.

A last-minute flight booked just 7 days before departure, and the route evolved regularly based on whims and accommodation availability, eventually settling on this:

- 5 nights in Fukuoka: Fukuoka city, Ukiha, Itoshima, Dazaifu, Yanagawa - 4 nights in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture: Okawachiyama, Arita, Takeo, Kashima, Yobuko, Karatsu, Kabeshima - 6 nights in Nagasaki: Ureshino, Higashi-Sonogi, Nagasaki city, Unzen, Sotome - 4 nights in Fukuoka: Karatsu, Fukuoka city

Most of the trip was done by car for practical reasons—easier access to certain places and freedom of movement—but also for the sheer joy of it. Despite slow traffic at times, driving in rural Japan is a delight.

J'ai un triple pédalier Stronglight Impact 46/34/24 et un dérailleur avant Shimano FDM610 (capacité 18 dents). Je les ai monté sur mon cadre il y a un mois. Aujourd'hui, je constate que le cable du dérailleur avant est anormalement usé, car lorsque je souhaite passer du plateau intermédiaire au grand plateau, la manette à friction microshift tord le cable quasiment en angle droit. Après un mois sur la route, le cable s'est donc décomposé.

Quelles solutions s'offrent à moi selon vous ? L'enjeu étant d'augmenter le débattement de la fourchette du dérailleur avant, pensez-vous que je dois changer de dérailleur avant pour un modèle doté d'une plus grande capacité ? Si oui, lequel (il doit au moins avoir une capacité de 22 dents) ?

Arnaque italienne Le site Wonderfullitalia propose des AirB&b, mais en fait c’est un site de location d’appartement pour touristes . La première fois que nous avons réservé à Syracuse nous étions un peu surpris mais la contacte était très sympathique. Nous avons constaté qu’il n’y avait aucun produits, type condiments, machine à café, machine à laver... ça a été car le lieu était top propre, bien situé très bien décoré et le prix raisonnable La seconde fois à Naples, nous étions plus nombreux Wonderfullitalia proposait pour 62€ la nuit un appartement 3 chambres 3 Sdb. Je réserve mais depuis la veille de notre arrivée j’ai un doute. Nous avons demandé à arriver Le Matin. Le contact nous dit Ok mais juste poser les bagages car il faut faire le ménage. Bizarre car il y a vraiment peu de touristes en Italie. Le jour même la contacte qui nous a demandé de la prévenir si nous étions en retard, c’est elle qui arrive en retard. Elle nous dir qu’il n’y a pas d’électricité dans l’appartement ni de Wifi.Je trouve cela bizarre car des équipes de nettoyage sont sorties de l’imm, je les ai interpellés et ils ne connaissent pas Wonderfullitalia. Elle nous propose un autre appartement à l’extérieur de la ville que nous refusons. Puis nous emmène a un appartement à 20’ à pieds que nous acceptons (a tord mais ont est toujours plus intelligent après) Il s’avère que nous sommes dans une cuisine chambre et une salle de bains chambre donc un peu compliqué pour un séjour. Lorsque nous entrons nous faisons remarquer la forte odeur d’humidité type cave et la poussière, pas de problème le ménage va être fait. Après leur passage nous faisons remarquer que les draps étaient plein de poussière qu’a cela ne tienne un type nous pose les draps and do it yourself (soit nous feront les lits) Le refund proposé sera divisé en 2 et c’est la seule fois en 5 semaines que nous devons payer la taxe tourisme en liquide. Pas réponse à la problématique de la climatisation qui ne fonctionne pas ni au manque de papier WC. La machine à laver est en décoration Donc je vous déconseille de louer avec Wonderfullitalia

j'ai commencé à cette heure tardive à planifier mon séjour dans les Gorges du Tarn prévu pour la dernière semaine de ce mois-ci. L'annulation d'un voyage à cause de la crise sanitaire m'a conduit à éviter à prendre trop d'avance dans l'organisation d'un voyage.

Néanmoins, je constate que les lieux de séjour dans les endroits "centraux" des gorges du Tarn (Sainte-Enimie, La Malène …) sont tous complets. Les lieux de séjour disponibles sont situés à la Canourgue, Meyrueis ou Monstuéjouls. De ces différents lieux, il faudra au moins parfois 30 min en voiture pour visiter une partie des gorges. Et j'ai cru comprendre que les routes étaient assez sinueuses.

Parmi ces 3 endroits, y en aurait-il un qui serait préférable ? Monstuéjouls est à côté du Rozier mais à l'opposé de Quézac.

Faudrait-il combiner trajet en voiture et en canoë (sachant que je n'en ai jamais fait et j'ignore si la rivière est relativement calme) ?

bonjour je reviens d'un séjour où j'ai loué un véhicule sur Agadir , puis effectuer un périple au cours duquel une personne a percuté mon véhicule stationné, ce que j'ai vu immédiatement….. la personne semblait de bonne foi, je n'avais pas de constat et j'ai donc pris la photo du véhicule incriminé, du choc et les coordonnées du fautif en présence de témoins , notamment le patron d'un bar connu….. lors de la remise du véhicule, le loueur a voulu que je paye un forfait pour la réparation et m'a précisé que la police ne s'embarrasse pas de petits dossiers sauf bakchich….. je préconise donc à chacun 1) de prendre une puce téléphonique 2) d'appeler immédiatement le loueur sur son portable ( donc prendre un portable du loueur) 3) de ne pas lâcher l'affaire avec le fautif sans avoir l'avis du loueur 4) prendre impérativement un constat( difficile à obtenir car très rare à faire, les marocains bricolant les dégâts pour payer moins)

La semaine dernière, AirAsia m'informe que la réservation a été transférée vers un autre vol partant une heure plus tard, mais que les sièges réservés ne sont plus valables suite au changement. En vérifiant sur le site, je constate en effet que deux nouveux sièges ont été attribués : deux sièges non côte à côté et situés bien plus loin dans l'avion. Ma question est donc de savoir s'il est possible d'obtenir, sans nouveau supplément de frais, les sièges réservés à l'orgine ? Quelqu'un a-t-il déjà été dans cette situation ? J'ai constaté la multiplication d'officines proposant d'aider le voyageur malheureux à faire valoir ses droits moyennant une forte commission. Quid du sérieux et de l'efficacité de ces sociétés? J'ai voulu dans un premier temps faire appel à celle dépendant de l'association consumériste "Que Choisir" mais elle semble aux abonnés absents, du coup je me demande ce que peuvent valoir les autres. 🤪 Je songe en particulier à flightright.fr Quelqu'un y a-t-il déjà fait appel et si oui pour quel résultat? 😐

Hors cette année, j'ai constaté une baisse générale des sollicitations et une baisse globale de fréquentation notamment de la part des cyclos étrangers. Partagez vous cet avis ? Avez vous constaté un moindre intérêt pour ce type de rencontre ?

Le viol d'une touriste Réunionnaise risque aujourd'hui de souffrir de la perception que Maurice n'est pas une destination sûre, en particulier pour les femmes. Par un beau dimanche ensoleillé, je me promenais à Zadar quand j ai aperçu un agent contrôleur des parkings faire le tour des voitures en stationnement. J’ai remarqué son petit manège et j ai constaté qu’il vérifiait uniquement les voitures en plaques étrangères ou voitures de location. Évidemment tous les croates n avait aucun ticket de stationnement visible sur le tableau de bord de leur voiture et l agent verbalisateur ne prenais même pas le temps de contrôler ces véhicules. je trouve cette démarche terriblement injuste, avez vous constaté des situations similaires?

Bonjour, Je dois annuler un vol IBERIA non remboursable. Je voudrais néanmoins récupérer les taxes d'aéroports. Pour le traitement de l'annulation des vols, Iberia demande 20 euros de frais, mais c'est gratuit si la procédure est faite en ligne. Or, je constate qu'il est impossible de procéder à l'annulation en ligne.... Encore une arnaque d'Iberia pour nous obliger à payer des frais... Quelqu'un a-t-il subi la même arnaque et pourrait m'aider ? Un grand merci par avance !

Nous partons (2) pour 20 jours du 19 août au 7 septembre est-il avantageux qualité prix de prendre la classe GREEN entre autre pour l'espace bagages? À partir de notre expérience en Suisse nous avons constaté que le service en 2de classe était très acceptable et que la prime pour la 1ère ne valait pas le coût.

J'ai lu qu'il fallait, au départ du parking du petit train, compter 2h30 de montée. C'est le temps constaté par ceux qui ont déjà fait l'ascension?

Apparemment le plus difficile serait les parties de dénivelé et les cailloux, y a t il beaucoup de segments avec du dénivelé?

J'ai l'habitude de marcher mais plutôt sur des routes plates ou vallonnées mais moins souvent en montagne. Il n'y a pas besoin d'être expert en randonnée pour y monter, un bon marcheur y arrive tout aussi bien, non ?

Tt le parcours est au soleil ou y a t'il quelques parties ombragées?

Apparemment le sentier est bien balisé en jaune ' sentier de la Rhune ' donc pas possible de se tromper de chemin?

Les bâtons sont ils nécessaires?
