J'ai acheté le Lonely, mais autant j'avais été trés satisfait de ces guides pour la Birmanie ou l'Inde, autant là j'ai un gros livre dans les mains et je n'arrive pas à 'sentir' ce qu'il faut aller voir ou non. Ce guide là n'est pas trés enthousiaste et ne me désigne pas vraiment les sites à ne pas louper, il me semble qu'il manque pas mal de cartes, car les adresses sont indiquée par rapport à des lieux de repère, mais comme il n'y a pas de carte indiquant ces lieux, je ne vois pas trop comment trouver certains hotels, et en plus il conseille systématiquement une agence de voyage pour visiter la plupart des choses ce qui n'est pas trop ma tasse de thé. Bref, un guide un peut trop clean et sans saveur pour moi.

J'ai été en feuilleter d'autres dans une librairie, le guide vert à l'air pas trop mal, mais il est vraiment trop académique pour moi. Si je ne trouve rien d'autre, je le prendrais quand même, car les sites interressants y sont classé par des étoiles, et il y a des cartes, ce qui pourrait bien complèter mon lonely.

Que me conseillez-vous comme guide qui n'hésite pas à dire que tel site est nul et que tel autre est à voir absolument, et qui indique clairement le lieu géographique des bonnes adresses qu'il conseille ?

Nous partons au Chili visiter le Nord. Nous n'arrivons pas à choisir un guide à emporter. Nous aimerions un guide qui ait des données pratiques (hebergements, ...) fiables. Peut on se fier au Routard???

En 1998, j'avais visité la Lybye en moto lors d'un très beau tour de la méditerranée. A l'époque, j'avais pu voyager seul en toute liberté. J'ai appris que les années suivantes, il y avait obligation d'être suivi par un "guide"; coûteux et guère pratique en moto! Est-il vrai que cette obligation a disparu? Avec mon amie, nous envisageons à compter de mars 2005 un nouveau tour de la méditerranée avec deux motos. Merci d'avance. Christian.

Ca y est, juste à point, qques semaines avant mon depart, je viens de recevoir le tout nouveau guide LonelyPlanet "Central Asia, 3rd edition" !! 😎 Tout frais, a peine sortie des presses (moins d'une semaine)

Pour ceux qui sont interesses, commande directe chez LP, recu en moins d une semaine (publié le 1er juillet !!) ; si il fallait attendre qu il soit dispo a la fnac...

Apercu rapide : il couvre tous les "-stans" : Kyrgyzstan, Ouzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, et... Afghanistan !! Le Xinjiang a part contre ete supprime dans cette edition (pour l afghanistan...)

Voila, je vais de ce pas me plonger dans la lecture et les nouvelles adresses/infos mises a jour !!

Nous partons en Bolivie au mois d'août et le nouveau Lonely Planet ne sort qu'en septembre. Nous avons le Routard qui nous semble vraiment trop succint et incomplet. Y-a-t-il un guide qui sort du lot ? Est-ce-que le dernier Lonely planet, malgré son ancieneté (mai 2001) reste une valeur sûre ?

En tant que futur habitant de la Guyane Française, je m'interroge sur le meilleur guide de voyage disponible concernant les voyages au Brésil, sachant que je privilégie les voyages sac au dos de type "routard".

J'ai lu que Footprint avait très bonne réputation sur L'Amérique du Sud mais j'ai été déçu par leur guide lors d'un voyage au Guatemala (même si c'est en Amérique Centrale), j'ai en général une préférence pour les guides Lonely Planet mais je sais qu'ils sont parfois limites selon les destinations (lors d'un voyage à Madagascar, le Guide du Routard s'est avéré beaucoup plus riche sur des infos vraiment importantes quotidiennement : transports, hébergements...).

En résumé, pour le Brésil, Guide du Routard, Footprint, Lonely Planet, que choisir ??

Arthur Neve (1859–1919), an English doctor and missionary, dedicated most of his life to his passion for Kashmir, a region he wrote several books about—including this guide (18 editions published between 1890 and 1945).

This copy (225 pages, 9th edition, 1913), published in Lahore, features dozens of detailed itineraries with maps, covering campsites, mountain pastures, river crossings, and more. Among them, you can trek from Srinagar to Khapalu and then to Baltistan, or "travel" from Leh to Yarkand (Xinjiang) via the Nubra Valley, along with other unexpected destinations. The guide also includes suggestions for shikara rides, houseboat rentals, and gear for hunting, camping, fishing, and photography. Plus, it lists various supplies like chocolate, Egyptian cigarettes, frames, and alcohol. Note that the Murree Brewery, relocated to Rawalpindi, is still operational—though, in theory, the predominantly Muslim population can’t access it. I found this book in a box of old books, and you can still find copies on Anglo-Saxon websites—though often at prohibitive prices.

Hi, this might not be the right section, but I’d like to know if it’s possible to start mountaineering with another person without necessarily hiring a guide. We’ve done quite a bit of hiking but not mountaineering—we’ll just do a half-day glacier course. After that, we were thinking of starting with La Grande Motte and the Pointe de la Traversière, which were recommended to us. Honestly, for things like roping up and knots, I’ll learn at home with lots of videos and a book.

I was lucky enough to spend two stays in Tajikistan between October and November 2025. I met Fayziddin, who’s a French-speaking guide and very knowledgeable—he really knows how to share his love for his country and his valley. He’ll welcome you to his village and, in the future, to a hostel that’s currently under construction. I can’t recommend him enough!

I’ll be in Peru in mid-May and I’d really love to do the Huayhuash trek. Back in France, I’ve done a few treks independently with my own gear, but since I travel light and solo, I think it’d be more interesting—and safer—for me to do this trek with a guide who can also provide equipment.

So happy to discover by chance that VoyageForum is back! We’re leaving in a few days for Thailand with our two kids, aged 12 and 15. We’re considering stopping by Khao Sok but don’t want to do a typical 2D/1N or 3D/2N excursion with an overnight stay on the lake—it’s way out of our budget 🤪. Still, the place seems worth the detour. We’ve planned to spend 2 nights there (arriving in the late afternoon on the first day) and I’d love to do a full-day private boat tour on the lake and a hike (half-day or full-day). Do you think it’s doable to book on the spot if we arrive a bit late on the first day? Or is it better to book in advance? None of the websites for booking these services inspire confidence—I get the feeling it’s a real lottery afterward for getting an interesting and friendly guide. But I’m worried it’ll be the same on-site since everything seems so standardized. Do you have any firsthand experience? Maybe even a Facebook contact or something for a guide? Are the prices still really that expensive if we don’t stay overnight on the lake? I’ll admit I’m not sure if we should even stop there anymore...

Hello everyone, and a big THANK YOU to all the travelers who took the time to reply to my last post and tell me that doing South India in 28 days was a sweet utopia. My dear friends, you were absolutely right. After 4 days in Goa, I settled for exploring all of Karnataka and its beautiful UNESCO-listed temples, and I loved it. Kerala and Tamil Nadu will have to wait until next year when I can take 6 weeks off.

But the purpose of this post is to ask you which guide or website would be best to prepare for the BLUES TRAIL I’d like to do in September or October 2025 over a month: 3 weeks to travel the route, enjoy Nashville a bit too, and the last week to explore Louisiana. I saw that *Le Routard* has a guide on Louisiana. Where else can I find more info?
