Hello, We’re a French couple, aged 69 and 74, and we’d love to visit several national parks in the American West, including—of course—the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Valley of Fire, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. We’re planning a flexible trip of 15 to 20 days between April and June 2027.

One of us will buy the America the Beautiful pass for $250, and we’ll obviously split the cost of gas.

I’ll answer the two questions you’re probably wondering about: Why aren’t we renting a vehicle ourselves? Because we’ve barely driven in our lives. And why aren’t we taking an organized tour? Because most group tours only hit a few parks and rush through with round-trip flights from France. We’d like to extend this trip to visit iconic American cities and places for an extra month and a half.

If you’re interested in visiting some of the parks—even if not all of them—with us, please let us know. As I mentioned, our dates are very flexible.

I’d describe myself as a "former diver." I’ve done around 450 dives in natural environments across different settings. I put diving on hold about 5 years ago due to work/schedule constraints and, let’s say, family reasons. Since then, I’ve still tried to stay in shape with hiking trips, running, swimming, and freediving in protected environments, etc... I’m planning to get back into the bubbles somewhere this year. Any destinations you’d recommend—or avoid—for getting back into it? I’m looking for a spot for April/May this year.

Hi there, I’d like to return to Uzbekistan next April for 10 days with my husband to visit our son who lives there. We went last July and I bought the flight tickets (direct flight from Paris on Uzbekistan Airways) about 2 months in advance at very reasonable prices. I’ve been checking for late April for a few weeks now, and the tickets are much more expensive and keep rising. I can’t figure out if the prices are going up because it’s still a bit too early to buy and they’ll likely drop if the planes aren’t full, or if it’s because the period is actually in high demand. For reference, last year I bought my son’s ticket on May 30th for a departure on June 3rd—just 3 days later—at a very low price that didn’t budge at all. We’re heading to Florida at the end of October with our 2- and 4-year-olds. I’d love to get your thoughts on the itinerary we’re considering.

Since we’re traveling with little ones, we’re keeping the number of stops limited to make things easier for them and avoid packing and unpacking every day.

For the Keys, I was thinking Marathon or Islamorada might be a good base with kids—less driving on the last day, too. What do you think?

For the 3 nights in Fort Myers or Naples, where do you think is better to stay? We’d like to spend one day on Sanibel and the rest relaxing. We’ve only planned 2 nights in Miami. Is that a mistake? Should we cut one night from Naples/Fort Myers to add an extra night in Miami? If so, maybe skip Sanibel. Also, does ending in the Keys instead of Miami seem like a bad idea? We’d be staying in Marathon or Islamorada, which keeps prices more reasonable since it’s a weekday. Plus, it lets us break up the drive from Naples to the Keys without adding an extra stop near the Everglades, which would mean another hotel change for the kids.

I’ve found ways to reach the South China Sea easily, whether from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. However, I can’t find a straightforward way to get to the Philippines by sea. There’s a cargo ship from Zamboanga to Sandakan, but getting to Sandakan is really complicated. Do you have any simpler ideas for ferries or cargo ships? I can arrive anywhere in the Philippines. Has anyone tried hitching rides on cargo ships in ports? From which port?

I’m looking into planning a trip to Egypt (first time!)

Important context: My wife has difficulty walking. Maybe what I’m looking for will turn out to be complicated. We’re traveling as a couple for 10 to 14 days.

The initial plan is: - Land in Cairo: visit Cairo and the surrounding area (still figuring out how long to stay) - Head up to Luxor: preferably by boat, otherwise by train, or as a last resort, by plane See what sights there are along the way - Hot-air balloon excursion in Luxor: Need to look into this - Then go either to Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh (via ferry) for some beach time and diving (2/3 days)

The goal for this first trip isn’t to see everything at each destination, but rather to be on the move and experience the journey.

My question is about whether it’s possible to travel up the Nile one-way without doing a round-trip cruise from the starting point. Is this doable? If so, how does it work? Through a local agency?

Should we do this trip in this direction, or would it make more sense to go the other way, starting from Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada?

Bonjour, Ça fait maintenant plus de six semaines que j'ai fait ma demande d'avoir/remboursement et je n'ai toujours pas de nouvelles. Et pour vous, ça ce passe comment ?

Nous avons souvent partagé avec vous nos voyages en petit fourgon. Depuis 2018, notre départ en retraite a tout changé. On est passé de 5 à 6 semaines de congés annuels à la possibilité de 6 mois sur les routes !!! Bien sûr, notre minuscule fourgon est moins adapté à de longs séjours.

Notre solution ?

Garder notre vieille camionnette pour les voyages hors de Schengen et accrocher une roulotte à notre voiture de tous les jours, un petit Duster basique. Vraiment basique, avec la motorisation DCI la moins puissante, à peine 90 CV. Donc une caravane compacte, légère, économique .......

Bref, un attelage low cost, dans la continuité de nos périples en fourgon de plombier ! 😏

Inutile d’ouvrir une énième discussion sur camping-car/caravane. Beaucoup de camping-caristes sont d’anciens caravaniers et connaissent bien les limites de son utilisation. Pas besoin d’y revenir !

Mais puisque nous faisons les mêmes balades, pourquoi ne pas les partager ?

Sur les 10 prévues, 8 sont déjà en ligne. Nous avons essayé de varier les usages, mer, montagne, campagne, cure thermale, culture .....

La FRANCE en caravane

18. Dernier carnet en ligne en attendant les autres, un séjour en Normandie. Nous débutons par l'Orne et sa très belle vallée.



19. Puis, nous séjournons au coeur du Pays d'Auge.



20. Enfin, nous traversons la Seine pour nous installer en Pays Cauchois, dans l'ancienne ferme des grands-parents de Sylvie.



Voilà, rien d'extraordinaire. Mais c'est justement ce que nous apprécions en roulotte 😏 Des sorties tranquilles, faciles, dans le plus beau pays du monde ........

Je prends tellement de plaisir à lire les carnets postés au retour de différentes destinations que j'essaie à mon tour d'un faire un, très modestement, vraiment sans aucune prétention, juste l'envie de partager mes ressentis sur cette courte découverte de Malte en cette fin janvier 2020.

Jour 1 5h45, lever très matinal, un brouillard à couper au couteau. La grève ne semble pas avoir trop d'impact sur la circulation des RER aujourd'hui mais on préfère assurer le coup. 6h44, RER A à quai, on enchaine avec le RER B et à 8h on est au terminal 2D de Charles de Gaulle. Notre vol Air Malta, en code share avec Air France, KLM et Delta, est prévu à 10h20. Passage très rapide au scanner et on va se poser tout seuls en salle d'embarquement dans des fauteuils confortables. On est seuls, c'est bien la première fois. Faut dire qu'il n'y a que deux salles d'embarquement me semble-t-il à cet endroit, et on n'attend pas dans la nôtre mais dans celle d'à coté, déserte. 9h45, début de l'embarquement. On prend le bus et on attend sur les pistes. Le ménage n'est pas terminé dans l'avion. On attend. Il y a toute sorte d'engins roulants autour de notre avion, des palettes, des colis, des bagages, des chariots... jamais vu autant de bordel autour d'un avion pret à partir ! On s'installe enfin, à l'avant de l'avion, et j'observe toute cette animation à l'extérieur.



Un panneau affiche notre heure de départ et un décompte en minutes : - 3 mn. Hum, ça charge encore des palettes, des sacs postaux, des colis Fedex, ça m'étonnerait qu'on soit prêt dans 3 minutes ! Le temps passe... +12 mn, +28 mn, +61 mn. Ah, ça y est, on repousse, on roule et... on s'arrête 5 mn, 18 mn, 40 mn... là c'est bon, on roule, on décolle, il est midi passé.

14h33, on se pose à Malte, 17°, nuageux. On achète directement une carte de transport pour la semaine à 21 €, la Tallinja card explore unlimited travel 7 days, sinon c'est 1,50 € le trajet en bus en hiver, 2 € en été.



On sort de l'aéroport et on trouve l'arrêt du bus X4 juste devant. Prochain passage à 15h09, soit dans 6 minutes, puis un bus toutes les demi heures en gros. On descend au terminus à la Valette, au niveau de la fontaine au triton.



Notre hotel est à 600 mètres. On s'avance par le "city gate" dans les rues piétonnes de la Valette, c'est trop beau, tout en pierre et en dénivelé. J'adore 🙂



On continue dans la rue commerçante, on passe devant la co-cathédrale St John, on descend des marches et voila notre hotel au bout de la ruelle, le Grand Harbour hotel, juste en face des trois cités.



Check-in rapide, on pose nos affaires, on prend un petit thé vite fait et on ressort. On goute des spécialités locales : pour aujourd'hui une sorte de gros chausson aux pois pour l'un, au thon/épinards pour l'autre. 1,50 € chacun, ça nous cale bien et il nous fallait bien ça vu qu'on a fait l'impasse sur le déjeuner. Puis on arpente la rue commerçante et les ruelles perpendiculaires, on fait les boutiques, on regarde les menus des restos. Premier constat : c'est pas cher ! on est en période de soldes et les prix sont bien inférieurs à ceux de Paris. Dans les restos, pareil, les plats sont moins chers qu'à Paris. Arrive 19h, on s'installe en terrasse et on commande des mojitos et finalement des pizzas. Les terrasses c'est sympa, mais à 21h on se caille sévère (pas de brasero ni de plaid) et on rentre se réchauffer à l'hotel.
