Hi there, We’re flying from Montreal to Lyon this August to go hiking in the French Alps. We’ve rented a car and will be staying at campgrounds. We’re planning to do day hikes and want to stay a few days in one spot, do a few hikes, then move on to our next camping spot. Could you share your favorite spots or any recommendations for places to spend a few days with great hikes?

A few details: We arrive in early August and leave in early September. We’re looking for day hikes (or shorter), moderate difficulty, with a cumulative elevation gain of no more than 1000m, and of course, beautiful scenery! We’d prefer not to drive too much—maybe it’s best not to head too far south and deal with unnecessary heat? Along the same lines, if you know of any great campgrounds where we can start our hike directly without needing the car, we’d love to hear your suggestions!

I just booked a flight and hotel (Mövenpick in Durrës) for my husband and me for late May. We’re thinking of spending (I haven’t really decided yet) one day in Tirana, one day around Berat, and one day around Gjirokastër and the Albanian Riviera. We were planning to hire a private driver for the day. I asked the hotel if they could find one for me... they brushed me off! Yet I usually do this for all my trips.

Would you have a name, a company, or someone I could contact?

Otherwise, is it "dangerous"—road conditions and Albanian driving—to rent a car?

Do I need an international driver’s permit?

Hi there, I’m a bit late to be worrying about this, but hopefully someone can help me before I leave. Tomorrow afternoon, I arrive at Lyon Part-Dieu on the TGV at 5:50 PM and take the TER to Mâcon at 6:16 PM. Is a 26-minute transfer doable? Are the TGV and TER on the same departure board? And are they on the same platforms too? I’ve been to Lyon before but never had to make a connection after arriving. Thanks

Hi there, I’m struggling to get back into hiking and I’m considering tackling the GR5 from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean shores in August-September.

Since I can’t plan daily distances in advance, I’ll be bringing gear to bivouac.

I’m not familiar with this route and wanted to get an idea of water resupply options before setting off: are sources and streams still flowing easily in late summer on this GR, or should I prepare for long dry stretches? 😐

If you're walking around the southern part of Lake Bourget, you can't escape the noise from a parachuting club's planes. A group of climate skeptics actually takes off in small, very noisy aircraft every 15 minutes over a Natura 2000 classified area. They don’t seem to face any restrictions—neither for noise nor for greenhouse gas emissions. They occupy the airspace without paying fuel taxes or providing carbon compensation to local municipalities or environmental preservation associations, apparently. It sounds surreal, but it’s very real in such an important location.

My first question is about the route—specifically, which ferry to take? Bridges? Do I need to book in advance? Is it better to go via Denmark or take a ferry from Germany? And which cities should I leave from and arrive in?

Are there any toll passes or electronic toll systems I should get for road crossings?

My plan is to visit only southern Sweden…

We’re thinking of leaving our car at Chapelle en Valgaudemar and going hiking for three days with two nights in a mountain refuge. At the end of the third day, do you know if it’s possible to take a bus or coach to get back to Chapelle en Valgaudemar? From Pont du Fossé or Chabottes. If not, would you have another more suitable route to suggest?

Hi there, We’d like to spend 2 days in Lyon in May with our 8- and 12-year-old kids, exploring the city on foot. We’ll arrive on day 1 around 11 AM and leave on day 2 around 6 PM.

I’ve mapped out two routes and was wondering if they’re doable in our 2 days, and if you have any tips or info on visit prices.

We’re not sure where to stay yet, but we’d like to optimize by booking accommodation (hotel or Airbnb) between the two routes, maybe?

Hi fellow bike-packers, so I’m heading out solo by bike this spring, like I do every year—around 1,500 to 2,000 km in total. This time I want to explore the south of France. I’ll start by meeting up with a buddy in Ariège, and after that the road’s wide open toward the east, aiming for Drôme. If anyone has route ideas—especially quiet backroads, places I can wild-camp pretty much anywhere, and climbs that aren’t too steep—I’m all ears! Thanks, and see you around here or on the road. Claudio will head up the Arve Valley from Geneva to Chamonix via Annemasse, Cluses, Sallanches, and Argentière, then make his way to Martigny, Switzerland, through Finhaut, and return via the Rhône Valley and the ViaRhôna: St-Gingolph, Evian, Thonon, and back to Geneva.

Il semble que la région accueille beaucoup de monde cette année (encore plus qu'habituellement) et que les stationnement sur aires et parking gratuits soient difficiles. Mon compagnon et moi prévoyons des vacances d'une semaine dans le parc des écrins en septembre. Nous aimerions y faire 3 jours de randonnée en s'arrêtant dans les refuges. Nous sommes des bons marcheurs mais pas des alpinistes (6 h de marche par jour me semble bien).

J'ai trouvé cette boucle là : "Trois jours de randonnée dans le parc national des Ecrins au départ de Bourg d'Arud. Cap vers le lac et le col de la Muzelle, Valsenestre, le lac de Labarre, la cabane de la Selle, le col de la Brèche et le lac de Lauvitel." Qu'en pensez vous ? Avez vous autre chose à proposer ?

J'aimerais savoir quels sont les meilleurs endroits pour randonner en Grèce continentale ? Nous avons deux enfants de 8 et 10 ans qui marchent bien, nous souhaiterions effectuer des randonnées en montagne de quelques heures dans des jolis coins. Merci 🙂

Bonjour, Que pensez-vous de la Plagne (Belle Plagne) comme site de rando (à la journée) pour 1 semaine en aout. Assez de variétés de rando pour la semaine grâce aux téléphériques ? je voudrais éviter de prendre la voiture. Le panorama a l'air tellement vaste (ca va me changer de Chamonix, tout encaissé :-) ) OK, la station en elle même n'est peut être pas extra, mais que penser du panorama facilement accessible ? Croisieurope vient d'annoncer que la Belle des Oceans (ex Silver Discoverer) va démarrer fin aout des croisières entre Nice et la Corse. C'est un bateau de petite taille (64 cabines) très sympathique (voir mon compte rendu https://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=9827073 ) qui est actuellement en arrêt à Trogir en Croatie (d'où sont originaires une bonne partie des navigants) et devait gagner le Canada. Croisieurope fait des efforts pour ce redémarrage : acompte 15 jours avant le départ, annulation gratuite jusqu'à 15 jours du départ.
