Getting to Gran Canaria
Location Map of Gran Canaria
By sea
To/from mainland Spain
While the Canary Islands have no ferry links with neighbouring Morocco, there are routes to "mainland Spain". Ferries depart from Cadiz with the company Transmediterranea to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Arrecife. The weekly service takes between 30 and 40 hours depending on the island, costing at least 150 € per trip for foot passengers. Naviera Armas operates Huelva-Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas routes for roughly the same price, slightly cheaper.
To/from the other islands in the archipelago
Fuerteventura and Tenerife are connected to Gran Canaria with the companies Fred Olsen, Naviera Armas and Trasmediterranea. Lanzarote is also served by the last two.
By air
Gran Canaria Airport is the most important in the Canary Islands, handling 10 million passengers per year and serving as the main base for the three local airlines (Binter Canarias, CanarFly and Naysa). Traffic includes charter flights, seasonal routes and low-cost services (Ryanair has a base here with around thirty destinations). Beyond connections to Europe (Germany, the UK, Benelux, Scandinavia, etc.), flights also depart for Morocco, the Azores and Cape Verde.
For domestic travel, the airport hosts Binter/Naysa flights to all other islands in the archipelago except La Gomera, plus CanaryFly services to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife North.
