As of April 30, 2007 the condition of the road is as follows:
From Poipet to Sisophon: 50 kilometers. This section is surfaced and varies from okay to quite wretched. A lot of potholes (big enough to park a truck in) were patched up late last year, but the road, particularly near Poipet remains a bone-jarring ride. It improves as you move closer to Sisophon. Taxi travel time about 0:45 to 1:15 hours.
From Sisophon to Kralanh: 55 kilometers. This entire stretch is unpaved. There are a few rough spots and some very fast spots. Some of the major road construction has begun. Travel times for taxis are about 0:45 to 1:15 hours.
From Kralanh to Siem Reap: 50 kilometes. Thirty kilometers of fairly good paved road as you approach (or leave)
Siem Reap though parts are starting to fall apart and the remaining twenty kilometers is dirt much of which was recently regraded and is quite smooth. Full construction of the new road is well underway near Kralanh. Travel times for taxis about 1:00 to 1:15 hours.
Overall travel time by taxi is 2:30 hours to 3:45 hours, for buses about 5:00 hours to 7:00 hours. Map of
Cambodia National Highway 5 (Poipet to Sisophon) and National Highway 6 (Sisophon to
Siem Reap) reflecting conditions on April 30, 2007.
