Hi there, I’ll be in Thailand in February near Ban Wa Tabaek with a group (there are 8 of us). I’d like to spend 2 days in Ayutthaya. What’s the best way to get there? Do you have any recommendations for authentic accommodation in the area? Any other tips? What are the must-see spots to visit? Thanks so much for your help, Muryel

Hi there, Still looking for a weekend getaway? Ayutthaya’s a great choice—all trains to Bangkok stop there. That said, you’ll need to check if any actually serve your little station. I see one option: the Express 76, which leaves at 12:32* and arrives at 3:34 PM* for 189 Baht in 3rd class or 299 Baht in 2nd class A/C. For the return trip, you can take the Express 75, leaving Ayutthaya at 9:42* and arriving at 12:30 PM* at the same prices. There *might* be other options with regular trains, but they’ll take longer (and be cheaper). Best to ask directly at Ban Wa Tabaek station. Otherwise, check locally if there’s a bus, though I doubt it. Alternatively, if there are 8 of you, you could rent a minivan with a driver from Friday to Sunday—ask around, maybe even with the mission director.

* Delays possible.

In Ayutthaya, a sunset boat ride to see (or revisit) some ruins in a different light is a lovely excursion. Ask your guesthouse to arrange it for you.

About 15 km south of Ayutthaya, the photogenic Bang Pa-In Palace is worth a quick visit. Commuter trains connect the two spots.

What kind of volunteering will you be doing?

Hi,

Commuter trains connect the two places.

Are they frequent?

Hi,

I went there last January. I took a minivan from MOCHIT TERMINAL on the way there—it was easier for me—and on the way back, I took the train to BANGKOK and got off at DON MUANG Airport.

I stayed for 4 days at CHOMMUAN GUESTHOUSE. It was very simple but quite decent.

Ayutthaya is pretty nice and quiet, very touristy but not overcrowded. There are several sites to visit for history lovers. The night market in the evening is great for food. It’s a bit more expensive than other places, but it’s all relative.

I had a few days before my flight to Cambodia, and I really enjoyed it.
