Je vais en Afrique du sud pour 15 jours en septembre prochain.
J'aimerai, avec mon ami, faire de la plongée à sodwana bay .. il paraît que les fonds sont sublimes!
Nous n'avons jamais fait de plongée en bouteille, se serait une grande première, pouvez-vous nous conseiller des structures où nous pouvons plonger, éventuellement les tarifs, leur site web s'ils en ont et les lieux recommandés pour plonger, et aussi s'il faut réserver à l'avance.
Coral est très populaire et offre des logements (chalets ou tentes) + restaurant le tout à 2 km de la plage
Sodawana diving est aussi réputé, situé un peu plus loin de la mer et offre aussi logement et restauration.
Amoray serait plus familiale et travaillerait avec le lodge Mseni (le plus luxueux du secteur) (gage de qualité ??)
En ce qui me concerne j'hésite entre Coral et Amoray. J'ai choisi de loger dans les structures du parc : http://www.kznwildlife.com/index.php?/Sodwana-Bay.html (où tu trouves camping et chalets.)qui sont près de la mer.
Parlons plongée : C'est effectivement LE site corallien d'Afrique du Sud. Les plongées se font entre 1/4 mile et 8-9 miles de la côte. Accès en gros zodiac et départ depuis la plage : grosses vagues et donc très sportif : ça remue.
A priori la visibilité est bonne, les rencontres avec de gros requins "raggies" sont fréquentes (pas de requins blancs apparemment). Et poissons coraliens, tortues...
Avec de la chance dauphins, requins baleines (j'en rêve) et raies mantas.
Cela dit je vous conseillerai, avant de partir, de prendre des leçons dans un club de plongée, même si vous n'avez pas de temps d'être diplômé , cela va bien vous dégrossir. Ce n'est pas à mon avis le lieu idéal pour plonger pour une premiere fois car ce n'est pas un environnement très calme. Mais vous pouvez passer un niveau sur place : le PADI Open water qui vous permettera de finir votre séjour par de belles plongées. Sinon vous risquez de vous cantonner à des plongées découvertes (peu profondes, et moins riches en faunes et flores).
On peut aussi y faire du snorkling mais il ne faut pas perdre de vue que cela remue fort et que l'eau sera plutôt fraiche : 20 °c max 23°c.
En aout il n'y a que des plongées le matin car cela remue et souffle trop l'après midi.
Autre intéret : il y a des parcs animaliers tout près : MKUZE et un peu plus loin HLUHLUWE

Si tu n'as jamais fait de plongée, tu en seras reduite aux baptemes, agreable mais sans réel interet
sinon passer une certification, environ 5 jours d'exercice, autant le faire en France et profiter de plongées explo en voyage -
tu vois ce que tu peux faire cet ete - le niveau 1 plus que facile
Sodwana Bay, les fonds sont loins d'etre beaux, et les rencontres mentionnées, requins ....moins que probable, les plongees ayant lieu près des cotes, a la limite UNE tortue
en plus c'est l'usine, 20 zodiaques sur la plage, depart, 30 mn sous l'eau ce qui est court, retour, d'autres plongeurs attendent
ce doit etre beaux ailleurs mais pas là ou les clubs vomissent leurs charters de plongeurs
Pour moi les plongees les + decevantes que j'ai faites
Vers Durban, voir Aliwal Shoal (nom du site) à Umkomaas (nom du bled), un vrai nids à requins !! c'est là ou sont les raggies (requins bouledogues), un peu plus loin Prothea bank, encore plus d'especes
ou le Mozambique, requin baleine, baleine à bosses, requins, gros dauphins, tortue, rais mantas ....
le paradis des plongeurs, à qq heurs de l'afrique du sud
mais encore une fois, sans brevet .....tu ne feras rien de bien interessant
à Cap Town, (Gansbai)plongee en cage pour voir le Grand Blanc - pas besoin de brevet, et si tu as fait un bapteme avant tu maitriseras le matos qui est d'un emploi enfantin (il faut penser à respirer - c'est tout)

Ce que tu décris correspond au Rush sud Africain des vacances d'été (hiver chez nous ) et week end fériés, pas au mois d'aout ou septembre où c'est la saison basse.
Pour les fonds, je suis étonné de tes commentaires, tu es le premier à décrire cela aussi négativement. Mais bon comme tu y es allé ....
Juillet aout sont les vacances européennes, anglais allemands et hollandais sont tres present
j'ai fait le voyage en individuel, c'est là que j'ai rencontré des plongeurs degoutés par la pauvreté des fonds et la mauvaise visibilité qui m'ont parlé du Mozambique ou je suis aller l'année d'apres, passant apres par Durban et ses requins
as-tu regardé sur le net Aliwal Shoal - (Umkomaas) et Prothéa bank ?
il existe des forum special plongéé, ainsi que le fameux "Bons et mauvais plans de la plongée", tu y lits des compte rendus de voyages
certains ont vu qq raggies (requins bouledogue) et 1 dauphin .....janvier et decembre (à sodwana)
plusieurs avis valent mieux qu'un
mais sans brevet, on vous emmènera pas sur ces sites, vous ferez des ronds ds l'eau sur un fonds sableux, de peur que vous vous perdiez, ou que vous labouriez les fonds avec vos palmes

J'ai lu aussi pas mal d'avis de sud africains dans la section plongée d'un forum Sud af.
Enfin de toute façon, qui vivra verra. Nous sommes trois plongeurs certifiés et on espere bien pousser jusqu'à 8 miles, j'avais regardé effectivement autour de Durban mais le côté perdu de Sodwana bay me plait plus. Lorsque tu regardes sur google earth, y pas grand chose hormis du vert et la plage. Et puis si la plongée n'est pas bonne, il reste les Parcs tout proche...dès fois qu'on en aura pas eu assez.
J'aussi lorgné côté Mozambique mais je manquais de temps pour tout faire....

Je vous conseil fortement de passer un open water avant de partir et pour plusieurs raisons.
En Afrique du sud les plongées sont sportives voir très sportives, certains site vous seront fermé sans un examen et vous risque de ne pas apprécier les plongées si vous découvrez tous en même temps, avec un minimum de pratique vous aurais moins de stress et serrais plus détendue.

J'ai plongé à Sodwana Bay en aout 2010 avec amoray dive center, petit club familial qu'on peu contacter depuis le Mseni Lodge.
Les plongées étaient pas mal mais la visibilité moyenne. Le départ et l'arrivée de la plage en zodiac étaient sportifs. Je voulais voir des requins mais je ne les ai pas vu...

Oui, on en a fait plusieurs. Les plongées étaient sympas, après cela dépend de tes éléments de comparaisons. Mais je ne regrette pas cette expérience même si on a cherché les "raggies" en vain. Entendre les baleines sous l'eau, ca reste en mémoire... Si tu peux t'en procurer une, emmène une "sharkskin" ou autre bonne sous-combi dans tes bagages.

La discussion date un peu, mais comme elle a été reprise et que je la découvre, je continue...
Je suis MF1, comme mon épouse (désolé, c'est du français : Moniteur Fédéral). Nous somme allé plusieurs fois en AFS et j'ai organisé un voyage l'année dernière pour 20 plongeurs sur des sites que je connaissais, sauf Sodwana Bay : Barra Lodge à Inhambane au Mozambique, Tofo, Ponta do Oro, Sodwana, Umkommas, puis Cape Town.
J'avais ajouté Sodwana parce qu'elle est devenue célèbre pour les Coelancanthes (que je ne comptais évidemment pas voir en raison de leur profondeur), sa belle plage, ses structures touristiques, et quoi qu’il arrive, Sodwana se trouvait sur notre itinéraire de descente le long de la côte. Nous étions au « Sodwana Bay Lodge ». Excellent resort, beaux bungalows, bonne restauration, piscine, et un centre de plongée intégré, avec la responsable de l’accueil francophone.
Si vous êtes débutant total, il ne faut pas compter faire des plongées explo sur cette côte de l’océan indien, où que vous alliez. Les conditions sont toujours difficiles : Départs et arrivées en zodiac sur une plage avec vagues et rouleaux qui peuvent être impressionnants, eau pas chaude, creux souvent supérieurs à 2 mètres, courants, peu ou pas de visi. Il sera, à minima, nécessaire de passer l’ Open Water et vos plongées seront limitées à 20 mètres. Comme il a été dit plus haut, vous auriez intérêt à vous préparer dans un club en France bien avant votre départ et à passer des niveaux français.
Pour la plongée à Sodwana, en septembre/octobre, je ne peux que confirmer ce qui a déjà été dit : C’est tristounet, la visi est très, très, limitée, pas mal de bateaux de plongée ( 5 ), mais surtout, il n’y a rien à voir !
je n'ai pas apprécié non plus leur organisation d'équipement sur la plage, au sol. A 30 ou 40 personnes, votre équipement est vite ensablé et votre combinaison, votre détendeur, votre stab, se trouvent couverts de sable. J'aime pas trop ! Après 2 plongées, j'ai récupéré mon matériel, et vu l'intérêt des plongées, je suis parti faire du quad...
L'encadrement était assuré par du personnel local. C'est bien pour l'emploi. Mais j'ignore par qui et comment ils sont formés. J'ignore aussi leur niveau d'encadrement, il est très relatif... Leurs centres d'intérêts dans l'eau n'est pas le même que le nôtre, et pour ce qui est de la sécurité, vous aurez intérêt à être autonome si vous voulez retourner au bateau.
En revanche, dans le coin, Umkommas et Prothéa Banks à Margate, sont remarquables et comptent parmi les spots mondiaux (requins bordés, raggies, bullsharks, et baleines à bosses en saison). Mais les conditions de plongée seront toujours identiques et difficiles.
Brian Griffiths est effectivement à recommander, c'est un vieux loup de mer, malicieux et sympathique. Il sera de bons conseils. Le site BMPP n'existe plus. "Forum plongée" le remplace avantageusement.
En conclusion : Les plongées en AFS, oui, trois fois oui. Les plongées à Sodwana Bay, non merci !

Concernant les débutants, ils ont une politique assez particulière en Afrique du Sud, j'ai tout de même vu des débutants partir dans la houle à Unkomaas, certes, ils avaient leur OW, mais seulement 3 ou 4 plongées mer et uniquement en condition d'eau calme, quand tu vois ce que ça donne là bas à partir de la plage...

We’re planning a trip to Thailand for next summer. It’s the rainy season, but that’ll let us explore forest parks (Khao Yai and Khao Sok, most likely) in full bloom and teeming with wildlife. We’d also like to spend a few days on beaches with nearby coral reefs during this trip. That’s where we’re hitting a snag—I’m struggling to find an island or region with favorable weather. I’ve gone through quite a few threads on this forum, but most are pretty old and mention a few names (Tao, Phaluai, Ma, or Phang Nga), though with doubts about visibility or overall appeal. Crowds also seemed like a bit of an issue. Just to clarify, our family has mixed interests when it comes to fish-related activities—some are Level 1 divers, while others are snorkelers only.
Are there any good options in July-August for great experiences in the area?

I’d describe myself as a "former diver." I’ve done around 450 dives in natural environments across different settings. I put diving on hold about 5 years ago due to work/schedule constraints and, let’s say, family reasons. Since then, I’ve still tried to stay in shape with hiking trips, running, swimming, and freediving in protected environments, etc...

We’ll be in Dahab again this October—we’ve been going since 1979—to freedive. In 2025, to our surprise, access to the Blue Hole is now paid: on top of the 10 € taxi fare, you have to pay $10 per person to enter the park. So we’re heading outside Dahab to the Three Pools site by bike, rented locally. Is there a bus that goes there, or shared taxis, instead of the tourist taxis? And where can we catch them? We’ve seen big buses full of local families on the site, but we don’t know where to find them. Thanks in advance!

For flight schedules and prices from Bordeaux, and ease of reaching Alexandria by bus/train afterward, I’m considering spending 4 days around Hurghada (direct flight from Bdx).
I don’t think I’ll go for courses to get my Level 1, since I don’t plan to dive often in the future—unless you think it’s better than doing 2 discovery dives in this area (I only have one baptism under my belt, in Koh Tao 15 years ago—amazing! But I’m not targeting trips for diving; I need to go to Alexandria, so this is a chance to get back into diving and snorkeling).
I’m looking for a spot to do some snorkeling, 1 or 2 baptisms, and explore the surroundings. I’ll arrive in early March on the evening of Day 0. I’ll have 3.5 days after that (I’m planning to leave on Day 4 around 4 PM by bus/train).
Is Hurghada completely to be avoided in favor of another area in the Red Sea, or can I still have a nice 3.5 days there? I know places like Dahab are more pleasant, but the convenience and timing of Hurghada appeal to me...
I usually prefer more authentic travel spots and places, but I’m willing to compromise on that if it’s still worth it for the diving.
Or should I only stay 2.5 days and head to Alexandria a day earlier? (I’ve already seen Cairo and Luxor a bit.)

I’ve read about Makadi Bay, but also that it’s packed with big resort complexes—which I’d rather avoid. Are there any beaches accessible without staying at one of those huge hotels?

I’m traveling with a buddy, and we don’t really want to spend all our time moving around, so if you have recommendations for one area that’s better than others for diving, that’d be great!
What do you think are the best diving sites? (I’d appreciate an overview of the country so I can decide based on that.)
Compared to my buddy, I love macro photography (nudibranchs, etc.), so I’d also love any tips on that.
And completely unrelated to diving, but I’d also like info on places to visit (national parks, reserves, etc.) to see the local wildlife.

I’m heading to Malaysia from mid-May to mid-August 2025 for nearly 3 months.
With my advanced certification in hand for a few years now, I’m on the lookout for the best dive spots in Malaysia.
I’ve obviously heard about the Perhentians and Sipadan.
Someone mentioned Tioman too, but not necessarily for diving.
Do you have any feedback on these places for diving? (visibility, marine life diversity, etc.)
Any idea about the rates for fun dives?
Dive centers you’d recommend?

I’m looking for a destination in Vietnam for January to spend a week and go snorkeling.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I know Thailand well, and with my Thai friend, we’d like to try a different country.
This is the excursion we shouldn’t have done in Mauritius.
We did it with The Friendly Dodo, but from what I saw, it’s the same with most agencies.
Departure at 6 a.m. (even though the sun rises at 7 a.m. in August). Why? Because there’s only one well-known spot where the dolphins are, and all the agencies race to get there first.
For 45 to 60 minutes, it’s just straight-line navigation to the spot. No one’s looking for dolphins—we’re just speeding there in silence, full throttle.
Once we arrive, there are already 5-6 boats. The dolphins are there, sure. The boats fight for the best position, cutting off the dolphins’ path, and then—go, go, go—everyone jumps in. Not a single instruction is given on how to approach the dolphins respectfully. Result: everyone jumps in at the same time from 3 boats, creating a huge splash, and rushes toward the dolphins. Outcome: faced with this chaos, the dolphins dive, and you can’t see them from the boat anymore. The swimmers who are right in their path might see them pass below for a few seconds at best.
Everyone climbs back onto the boats, and as soon as the dolphins resurface, the same cycle starts all over again.
After 5 or 6 jumps like this (3 of which I didn’t even see the dolphins), it’s back to the port the same way we came.
Not a single explanation is given during the entire excursion about the dolphins themselves or how to approach them.
Safety-wise, I didn’t feel comfortable either with all the boats fighting for position. I bumped into another boat (no pain) while swimming, and I wasn’t reassured about the propellers.
With all this circus, my daughters didn’t even want to get in the water. The problem is, when you stay on the boat, you don’t get much out of it either—because as soon as the dolphins resurface, everyone jumps in haphazardly and scares them off again.
Having done the same kind of outing in Réunion, I can confirm it’s nothing like this (much better organized and ultimately much more rewarding in Réunion).
Under these conditions, this is an activity we never should’ve done! !

I’ve been in Malaysia for a month now and still have two more to go. I started traveling with friends, but I’ll be solo for the next month and a half.
We did a pretty classic route: Perhentians, Cameron Highlands (which I found pointless), Tioman, and Kinabatangan in Borneo. Now I’m thinking of heading to Redang Island—Langkawi is also an option, but it doesn’t appeal to me as much. Any feedback on these two spots?

So far, I haven’t had much luck with diving—at the Perhentians, it was pretty disastrous with water at 31°C 😵😫
I’d love to find a nice island where I can meet people (locals and travelers) because going from a group of six to solo at the end is going to feel weird.

We’re heading to South Africa for a two-week vacation next March.
We’d love to see great white sharks and maybe even try the cage diving. We’re planning to go to Gansbaai—do you think we’ll have a chance to see them? Also, do you know of any specialized agencies that aren’t too commercial and are respectful of the animals?

notre voyage en Indonésie étant annulé, et notre agence nous déconseillant l'Egypte, nous sommes à la recherche d'un lieu où nous pourrons faire du snorkeling depuis la plage (et en excursion bateau). Je connais un peu Zanzibar pour y être allé il y a plus de 10 ans, ainsi que Pemba (mais les prix ont explosé), et je me tourne aussi vers Mafia.
Est ce propice au snorkeling , des resorts ont ils des house reef où l'on peut voir des choses intéressantes (je ne m'attends pas non plus au niveau de la Sulawesi ou des Raja).

Je pose ma question malgré la situation incertaine actuellement, mais évidemment mon plan de voyage est conditionnel à l'évolution de la pandémie, donc merci de vous abstenir ceux qui me diraient juste de rester chez moi ;)
Donc, je planifie de passer l'hiver au sud de l'Europe, et ou vers les Balkans et j'aimerais savoir si c'est partout de la plongée en eau froide donc avec le drysuit et tout ou s'il y a des endroits qui sont superbes et ou je peux plonger avec un suit plus épais seulement même exemple en février et mars. J'ai lu pas mal ici sur le portugal et malte https://divezone.net/diving/portugal mais j'aimerais l'opinion récente de plongeurs du coin! :)
Ce que j'aime en plongée c'est l'eau claire, les fonds marins attrayants, la vie aquatique particulière, etc. Je ne suis pas une fan d'épaves, mais je considérerai tout les sites / pays proposés :)
