Quick feedback on Marakele NP

Hi there,

My month in South Africa went really well. The itinerary revisits some places I’ve already seen—even a few times over...

Joburg – Marakele – Waterberg – Mapungubwe – Northern Kruger – Panorama Route – Southern Kruger – Eswatini (Hlane) – Maputaland (Sodwana Bay) – St Lucia – Joburg via Richards Bay.

I’ll skip some spots and focus on others.

Today’s topic: Marakele.

Back in 2009, I spent a day there, and since then... I’ve tried several times to go back.

The park isn’t very big—nowhere near as lush as Kruger—but it has a lot going for it. Even back then, there was a split between the western section, where you wouldn’t find any “dangerous” animals like elephants or buffalo (though rhinos were around), and the eastern section, the Big Five zone. Nowadays, the western part is open to mountain biking, and the campsite is completely unfenced, which pretty much confirms that the big animals aren’t there—no rhinos either (I didn’t see a single dung pile). The western section didn’t seem all that interesting to me... with vervet monkeys everywhere in the campsite. In the eastern part, there’s the Topli tented camp, right by a dam. It’s small but charming, with a great view and a loosely fenced perimeter (there are now lions and wild dogs in this area). No facilities—no restaurant, no pool (except at the campsite), no shop, no fuel, nothing...

View from the “chalet” terrace... nice and relaxed...

So, a terrace with a view for the lucky ones...

Bedroom and bathroom, separate and equipped kitchen. It can get windy. It must be cold in winter... but it’s hot this October.

Some lovely little roads... though some sections are 4x4-friendly.

A viewpoint at the top—you’re supposed to see the vulture colony from there... still haven’t seen it, as far as I’m concerned.

The animals?

Re: Quick recap from Marakele National Park
I recommend 3 nights—more? We always take the same routes (some by 4x4).

The wind didn’t help the quest for the holy grail, but I’m pretty proud of myself as a ranger.

The game drives were super generous with rhinos...

They’re far away

hiding

Not as far

And the most beautiful spot

They’re pretty far, get closer, are near... and end up 1 meter from the open window... An hour of patience...

Takeaways... Be aware of how the weather might affect things, take everything back with you, don’t expect an abundance—but... It’s as wild as I love it...

Good evening For me, it was Mountain Zebra and Karoo NP, my lion experience. Am I still leading 2-1? Will Mapungubwe let me change the score?

Still leading 2-1?

Yep. [;)]

Unless we count the number of critters?

Re: Quick update from Marakele NP
I overheard this conversation between a lion and a gazelle on Bush Forum.

The lion: "Have you seen Michel around much?" The gazelle: "Oh, come on! He’s here every year, but it’s really *you* he’s interested in." L: "I see him all the time, even though he claims he hasn’t seen me." G: "Me, unlike those idiotic rhinos, I hide to avoid ending up on the braai."

Hey there, I’m actually convinced that more lions have seen me than I’ve seen lions! They’re smarter and know the bush better than I do, I’ll admit it. Since I like to pat myself on the back a little— This year, Three times I’ve come across groups of over 10 lions and lionesses… With the expertise of a ranger from Shindzela. On the other hand, In iSimangaliso, The spot you see all over social media— A leopard walking right by the side of the road! One of my most amazing sightings. Modestly, I have to say the guy from South Africa in the car right in front of me handled things really well! Anyway, Rhinos, elephants, leopards, hyenas, lions, and cheetahs… among others. Complaining would be out of line.

Like a fellow traveler once told me: "You either love or hate the AFSA." Definitely, I love this land.

Hi there, and thanks Michel for this review of Marakele—it brings back some rather particular memories. We visited the park in 2023, staying two nights at Topli Tented Camp. I just reread my notes:

"Rating for Marakele: Average Less interesting than other parks for several reasons. Wildlife sightings were tricky because of the very dense bush. Roads were narrow and dangerous, especially when a male elephant blocked our way and forced us into a nerve-wracking reverse for 1km. Accommodation was nice with a beautiful view, but there were constant power outages." Looking back, I think I was pretty scared of that big male elephant. Topli Tented Camp is still really nice, but it’s publicly managed!!! Check out some footage from the trip in this video, starting at 1'41": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UoR-FH0NSE&t=1500s African regards, Loïc

Hi there, You're right. Depending on the season, the thick bush can really hinder wildlife sightings, especially in the western part, which is now less populated with animals. The eastern part is less dense. It's true that some roads require at least a high-clearance SUV. The road to the summit is narrow and dangerous—I wouldn’t go that far. An elephant on a small road isn’t just a Marakele thing! Power outages were frequent across South Africa last year and this year—none so far! And the rhinos made us forget all the inconveniences! !
