Avec mon mari, nous sommes tombés amoureux de l Ouest des États-Unis. Comme beaucoup d entre vous
j imagine 🙂
Après avoir fait 2 road trip, (circuit classique dans l Ouest "Phoenix/Los Angeles", puis "Seattle/Jackson Hole") nous voudrions cette fois ci explorer le Colorado tout en retournant dans nos endroits nos coups de cœur, afin de mieux les explorer.
Pour ce voyage, nous voulons éviter les "erreurs" commises lors des précédents road trip, à savoir trop de temps passé sur les routes, visites écourtées de certains endroits. Évidemment, ce n est pas chose aisée de deviner dans quels endroits nous aimerions passer davantage de temps avant d y être vraiment .
Nous avons sélectionné les sites qui nous intéressent le plus, tout en essayant de prendre du temps pour nous.
C est pour cela que je sollicite votre aide et vos conseils. (Ceci dit, il y a 3 jours ou nous roulerons beaucoup car impossible autrement)
Je travaille sur cet itinéraire depuis 6 semaines, il ne cesse de progresser car je découvre de nouveaux endroits quasiment tous les jours. (Grâce à des personnes d autres forums, je ne connaissais pas vraiment celui ci, c est d ailleurs une "collègue" d un autre forum qui me l a fait découvrir et si elle me lit, je la remercie 😉).
Voici l itinéraire quasiment définitif.
J1) Denver
J2) Colorado Springs ( Gardens of Gods le matin, Pikes Peak Road l après midi)
J3) Great Sand Dunes ( Arrêt à Paint Mines Interpretive Park, puis route jusqu' à GSD, randonnée, nuit au camping)
J4) Bisti Badlands ( Route jusqu à Bisti, visite de Valley of DReams, King of Wing, nuit parking Bisti. Quelle route est la plus jolie de GSD à BIsti? La 160 jusqu à Durango, puis la 550 jusqu à Bisti B, ou la 160 qui devient la 64 par Alamosa, Antonito, Dulce qui rejoint Bloomfield par la 550.)
J5) Durango (visite Eggs Factory, puis route jusqu à Mesa Verde. Visite Balcony House et/ou Cliff Palace l après midi, nuit à Durango)J6) Black Canyon (départ Durango pour Black C par la Million $ Highway. Arrêt Silverton, Ouray, Montrose. Aurons nous le temps de nous arrêter au Curecanti NP? Ou filons nous sur Black C? Nous aimerions faire les 2 rims. Nuit normalement, selon météo au camping)
J7) Glenwood Springs (Départ de Black Canyon jusqu au départ de la rando "Hanging Lake". Nous voulions faire "Crystal Mill" mais timing trop serré. Repos dans les sources d eaux chaudes de Glenwood l après midi)J8) Moab (3 nuits) et 1 nuit sur Mexican Hat.
1. Départ pour Moab par la 128, arrêt à Cisco, Onion Creek, puis "Negro Bill Canyon" et "Corona and bow tie Arches", d ailleurs, laquelle de ces 2 randos avez vous préférez?
2) Arches NP, rando "Devil s Garden" et "Fiery Furnace". Qu avez vous pensé de cette dernière randonnée?
3) Island in the sky. "Mesa Arch" au levé du soleil, "Green River Overlook", "Upheaval Dome Trail", la connaissez vous, soit disant on voit un cratère fait par une météorite, "Murphy Point Overlook Trail", "White Rim Overlook" et couché de soleil sur "Dead Horse Point".
4) Route pour "The Needles", rando "Slirock Trail" ou "Chesler Park View Point"? Nuit à Mexican Hat.
J12) Page (2 nuits) (1 Départ pour Page, arrêt MV, après midi libre sur Page.)
(2 Visite "Coyotte Butt South" avec Paria Outfitt)
J14) Zion (2) (1 "Observation Point" en J1 ou "The Narrows" et en J2 celle pas faite la veille)
J16) Bryce ( à voir car pas mal de randos faites lors du 1er voyage)
La suite de cet itinéraire n est pas encore arrêtée et sans cesse re modelée, et très brouillon comme vous le verrez.
J17) Colorado NM (1/2 journée à Colorado NP, nous ne voulions pas dormir à Colorado NM et poursuivre jusqu à Dinosaur, mais presque 8 h de route sans compter la Rim de Colorado NM. Auriez vous une autre alternative?)
J18) Dinosaur NP (2) ( Nous tenons à passer 2 jours dans ce parc)
J20) Boulder (en s arrêtant à Steamboat Springs, puis au Rocky Mountain Np, autres idées?)
J21) Denver
J22) Denver/Paris
J4 est trop chargé et attention il vaut mieux avoir un GPS de randonnée avec les points GPS rentrés au préalable, pour visiter tous ces lieux. Est-ce le cas ?

J6 est trop chargé aussi. Il y a beaucoup de route entre les deux rives du Black Canyon seulement distantes de quelques kilomètres pourtant ..
Faire la rive nord le J7 en allant à Glenwood Springs.
Ne pas rater le petit détour pour Rifle Falls State Park également.
Negro Bill ou Corona Arch: j'ai préféré Corona Arch, très largement !
Upheaval Dome est sympa. La théorie météoritique n'est pas sûre à 100%.
Reporter la dernière nuit prévue à Moab du côté de Monticello pour être un peu plus près des Needles afin de faire Chesler Park Viewpoint le plus tôt possible, surtout si votre circuit est en été !

Je pensais qu en partant assez tôt de GSD, on arriverait pour 14h sur le site. Çà nous laisse toute l après midi pour VOD et KOV. Peut importe l heure à laquelle on arrive sur le parking, tant que c est avant la tombée de la nuit.

D'accord ! Je pensais que vous vouliez visiter Bisti Badlands + Valley Of Dream + King Of Wings le même jour !
S'il n'y a que la route depuis Great Sand Dunes et les visites de VOD et KOW alors ça peut tenir ...
Mais du coup c'est le jour suivant qui est trop chargé ! Avec les visites de Bisti + Mesa Verde !
Faites Crystal Mills a la place de Hanging lake ( Hanging lake ne casse rien et il y a toujours bcp de monde) , Crystal Mills est majestueux , sauvage et beau avec de tres belles cascades a l'epoque ou vous serez par la , et il n'y a pratiquement jamais personne.
Currecanti pas la peine de s'arreter et ce n'est pas un NP.... Votre parcours au Colorado est bcp trop speed , j6 est beaucoup trop charger , par exemple Currecanti est a1h30 (2h) a l'Est de Gunnison Black canyon...Pour faire les deux rims du Black Canyon il vous faut un jour entier minimum et ce en dormant a Montrose ou Gunnison ....

Je sais que notre itinéraire au Colorado est rapide, il aurait fallu se consacrer uniquement à cet état, mais on veut retourner dans les parcs de l Utah a fin d y consacrer davantage de temps que lors de notre précédent voyage.
Si nous avons un coup de cœur pour le Colorado comme nous l avons eu pour l Utah, nous y retournerons 🙂
Pour le Black Canyon, j ai bien vu qu' il est compliqué de faire les 2 rims le même jour.
Je vais essayer de voir s il nous est possible de faire la rim Nord le lendemain en allant sur Glenwood, comme nous l a suggéré Itat.
Oui je sais pour le J5, il y a certains jours ou le timing est très serré mais il y a tellement de choses à voire, comment faire autrement?
Par contre, on m a certifié pouvoir acheter les places pour Mesa Verde pour le jour même au Visitor Center. J ai lu qu il fallait les acheter 48h à l avance. Êtes vous au courant? Car 48h avant on sera à Great Sand Dunes...
Oui, cela dépend si les visites sont déjà complètes ou pas, mais on peut acheter le jour même.
Par contre les Bisti Badlands demandent vraiment du temps, à moins d'aller voir que les Cracked Eggs et revenir mais ça serait vraiment dommage 🤪
J'y ai passé toute une matinée et je suis loin d'avoir tout vu ! Alors si on rajoute en plus la route jusqu'à Mesa Verde ... 🤪

Pour Bisti Badlands, effectivement on comptait aller jusqu à Eggs Factory et revenir.

Ou alors zapper complètement Mesa Verde. Mais je trouve cela absurde puisqu on passe à Durango.

A part ça, j ai refait l'itinéraire en mettant en J8 Colorado Nm et en J9 et 10 Dinosaur NP.
Je pensais y consacrer un seul jour mais vu tout ce qu il y a à voir je me dis que 2 ne seront pas de trop.
En J14 Monticello.
Puis, pourquoi pas casser la boucle et repartir par Salt Lake City. Faire Bryce en J20 et en J21 monter sur Salt Lake en J22 retour Paris.
A votre place j eviterai la region Gunnison/Black canyon car avec cet itineraire et le temps dispo que vous avez vous raterez pratiquement tout ce qu il y a a voir dans la region....J irai directement de Mesa Verde sur Moab....
La rive nord en J7 passerait alors par l'itinéraire que nous avons fait :
Black Canyon of The Gunnison > Curecanti NRA en prenant le pont qui enjambe le Blue Mesa > route 92 vers l'ouest.
Comme nous, ils ont dormi à Monticello.
Je crois que Orionide a campé dans le parc.
Quand nous avons fait notre circuit qui démarrait à Denver, le loueur ("National") de l'aéroport refusait qu'on prenne le SUV que l'on souhaitait (Jeep Grand Cherokee) du fait que notre road trip était en "one way". Alors, si vous envisagez de ne pas faire un circuit en boucle, assurez-vous que vous pourrez bien avoir la catégorie de voiture qui vous intéresse. Le loueur "National" ne voulait pas voir partir un certaine catégorie de voiture.
Je dirais qu'il faut supprimer quelque chose. A toi de voir quoi, parmi les quelques sites du Colorado où tu as dit que tu retournerais peut être 😉
IL me semble que des 3 sites de Badlands que tu veux faire, Bisti est le plus étendu et celui où il y a le plus de choses à voir ... Or, c'est celui que tu comptes "bâcler" 😕
Ce voyage de 3 semaines est censé combiner la découverte du Colorado et la redécouverte des parcs de l Utah qui nous ont littéralement subjugué lors de notre premier voyage. (mais pas assez de temps pour Zion, Bryce et Moab la première fois)
Je n ai pas l impression de bâcler certains endroits (effectivement un jour ou deux de plus auraient été appréciables) mais me sens plutôt privilégiée de pouvoir les découvrir. Qui ne se dit pas en rentrant, ahhh si j avais eu tant de temps en plus, je l aurais consacré à tel endroit?
En tout cas, je me le dis 🙁
Et puis, c est subjectif, tu vas me dire que je "bâcle" Bisti, d autre Black Canyon, Zion etc...
J ai demandé vos avis et conseils, prends note de tout et essaie vraiment de faire au mieux, mais j avoue être démoralisée... 😕
Je vais retravailler sur ce parcours et reviens plus tard.
Après réflexions, j ai du changé mon fusil d épaule, opter pour une "ligne" et oublier la boucle initiale. Boulder et les Rocky Mountains NP sont donc supprimés.
Nous faisons notre possible pour rajouter 1 ou 2 journées à cet itinéraire.
J ai donc ébauché un autre itinéraire Denver<Salt Lake City. Comme vous le verrez, il y a 1 ou 2 jours ou l on devra visiter au pas de course. (d ou notre possible pour rajouter 1 ou 2 jours).
Nous voulons profiter des paysages, des randonnées mais aussi pouvoir de temps à autre se relaxer, et ne pas passer 4h tous les jours sur la route (Ce qu on a fait lors de notre 2nd voyage )
Nous sommes comme toujours, preneurs de tous vos conseils et expériences, avis positifs ou négatifs, infos sur les campings, hébergements, routes, sites proches que nous aurions oublié.

Attention, vous roulerez de nuit pendant environ 1 h 30 si, le J14, vous allez à Monticello après le coucher du soleil à Dead Horse State Park ! Nous avons la route de Dead Horse SP jusqu'à Moab après le coucher du soleil et ce n'était pas éclairé.
Ta journée Bisti + visites + Mesa Verde + visites est celle qui me chagrine le plus !
En partant à 11h des Bisti, tu arriveras à 14h à Mesa Verde.
La dernière visite de Balcony House est à 16h ou 17h selon la période, celle de Cliff Palace 18h. Sachant qu'il faut acheter les tickets au Visitor Center avant.
J'espère que vous ne tomberez pas sur un jour où tous les tours sont complets jusqu'au soir.
Oui je sais bien... C est le méga risque... Pour le moment, je ne peux rien changer. De mon côté, les congés sont posés. Mon mari doit le faire le mois prochain et ce n est pas simple de poser 4 semaines... (On pense aussi aux 2,3jours nécessaires pour se remettre)
J2 et 3 peuvent être regroupés en une seule journée. Et hop tu gagnes un jour 😉
Surtout que les premiers jours vous serez levés aux aurores.
La ville de Denver, ok pour y passer quelques heures mais pas plus.

Garden Of The Gods à faire en fin de journée et là aussi ça se fait vite d'autant plus que vous allez ensuite dans la région de Moab qui est largement supérieur en terme de paysages à Garden Of The Gods.
Le J7, comme vous partez de Durango, vous n'aurez pas le temps d'aller jusqu'à la rive nord du Black Canyon, alors vous n'avez pas besoin de vous poser la question, vous terminerez cette journée sur la rive sud.
Puisque Hanging Lake vous tente, pourquoi ne pas y aller le matin du J9 ?
Nous voulions faire la randonnée "Hanging Lake trail". Mais, nous étions là-bas en Juillet, il faisait très beau, et c'était un week-end. Quand on a voulu s'engager sur la bretelle d'autoroute, un panneau indiquait que le parking était complet.
Françoise souhaite y aller en Mai, il y aura donc moins de monde et, au vu du récit et des images sur le blog d'orionide, c'est tentant.

Puisque vous êtes apparemment le plus à même de me répondre pour certaines questions, en voici une qui va peser lourd dans la balance. Question météo:
Initialement, nous avions prévu un départ le 19 Mai et un retour le 09 Juin, soit 22 jours.
2 jours nous manque pour ne rien négliger comme tout le monde nous l a fait remarqué, à raison 🙂
Il est possible pour mon époux de prendre davantage de congés, mais début Mai. (impossible en Juin 😠)
Ainsi, nous pouvons faire un départ le 05 Mai avec un retour le 28 Mai, ce qui nous ferait donc 24 jours. YOUPIII!!!
Sauf que j ai peur de la météo. Pensez vous que d avancer ce voyage de 15 jours pour bénéficier de 2 jours en plus serait une bêtise? Ou au contraire, ne changerait rien?

TU verras, vous verrez, quelques différences avec le mien, nottament la suppression de Glenwood et donc des randos Hanging Lake et Crystall Mill.
Secondo, j ai posté une demande un conseil météo à Jean-Luc, si tu ne l a pas vu, je récapitule:
Possibilité de partir le 05 Mai et retour le 28 Mai, soit 24 jours sur place au lieu du départ initial le 19 Mai et retour le 09 Juin. (impossible de poser davantage de jours en Mai)
Bêtise ou super bien???
Roxborough a des formations rocheuses étonnantes, mais là aussi c'est bien en-dessous de Moab et sa région. Mais en début de voyage ce n'est pas grave.
Le nouvel itinéraire est bien. Mais je repartirais de Denver (Vernal - Denver à la fin) pour éviter les frais de restitution pour le véhicule. La différence de kilométrage n'est pas énorme.
Je reporterais aussi un jour prévu à Dinosaur du côté de Moab.
A Garden of The Gods, il y a des roches de différentes formes, certaines en aiguilles et d'autres plus massives, dans un parc très verdoyant. La verdure et la couleur de la roche auraient fait un beau contraste, si on n'avait pas visité le parc sous la pluie et la brume. Nous avons juste eu quelques rayons de soleil furtifs de temps en temps. Pour nous, cela donnait ceci :
Et, du coup, j'ai été un peu déçue. Dans l'Etat du Colorado, nous avons eu une météo variable et une température plus fraîche que dans l'Utah.
A Zion NP, je crois que vous souhaitez faire la randonnée "The Narrows". J'ai lu ceci sur le site officiel du parc, sur leur brochure éditée en français :
"Entre novembre et mai, les excursions dans les Narrows exigent le port d’une combinaison type plongée et une préparation spéciale pour les climats froids".
Çà m a l air bien joli tout se même.
Après je comprends quand on me dit qu en ayant vu les PN de l Utah on ne pourra pas être subjugué.

Je me doute bien que les Températures seront plus clémentes dans certains coins de l Utah.
Je me doutais pour la combinaison pour faire The Narrows. En fin Octobre 2014 les gens les portaient. Mais il faisait doux à l extérieur. J espère que le climat de Mai sera similaire à celui d Octobre.
Lorsque quelques rayons de soleil commençaient à poindre leur nez, j'espérais que ça se lève. Mais, non, c'est resté couvert.
J'avais vu des photos prises par beau temps, et ce parc me tentait quand j'ai construit note circuit. Il est à voir quand on passe dans le coin. Il est différent des parcs de l'Utah.
Mais, j'aurais tant aimé avoir beaucoup plus de luminosité et du ciel bleu !

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.

In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
