Hi everyone, we’re heading to Tamil Nadu and Kerala at the start of the year for 30 days. We did Rajasthan 12 years ago, but things change fast. I’ve read that to get a SIM card, you have to buy it at a shop and then go to the operator to get a number; you’d also need an Indian mobile number. Has anyone here had recent experience with this? For buses and trains, do you need to book them well in advance? Any tips are welcome—thanks in advance! Happy holidays to all, Philippe

To get a SIM card, you need a photocopy of your passport and proof of address. An Indian phone number, I don’t think so. From Tamil Nadu to Kerala, it’s really tiring. You should plan for 12 hours on rough roads. The bus always goes through Pondicherry. Tamil Nadu to Pondicherry takes about 3 to 4 hours, and Pondicherry to Kerala (Alleppey) is around 8 hours. Cochin is a bit farther. The ideal option is to take a break in Pondicherry for a few days. If it happens to be a weekend, it’s quite lively here. So, Chennai (Tamil Nadu) to Pondicherry—no need to book the bus in advance. From Pondicherry to Alleppey, you should. You can do it the same morning if it’s not a holiday or weekend. The price varies depending on the day. There are several travel agencies side by side. They’re all located on the same avenue as the bus station.

Hi there, I got an Airtel SIM from a reseller who handled all the paperwork (it took quite a while). I’d recommend letting them take care of the admin side for you. I paid 500 Rs for 30 days. Happy travels! !
