Hello... nothing new for several years now... Can you go there independently from the rest of the country? Any recent experiences, either in Kurdistan or the rest of Iraq? Thanks a lot

With the situation in Syria, it’d be best to check with embassies first. Things seem to be heating up quite a bit up there.

Hello,

I’ll be there for about two weeks solo starting at the end of Ramadan. E-visa was quick and easy to get. Pierre Yves

Hi there,

This sounds like a really interesting project! I’ve been tempted a few times myself—either from Diyarbakir or by flying into Erbil or Sulaymaniyah—but I always chickened out. Could we get some firsthand impressions from you when you return?

Michel

PS: If we only travel to parts of the world that are friendly with Europe and France, we won’t have many options left. We’ll have to keep things in perspective and take the plunge.

Okay Michel, got it. When I said the e-visa was obtained without difficulty, I meant: once the application is validated. Some apps used by photographers for visas (automatic setting of face size, head proportion in the photo) don’t yet include Iraqi Kurdistan in their list of destinations. So, I had to find a photographer who still works the old-fashioned way. Then, if the application doesn’t validate on your usual browser, try another one. Once the application is validated, you’ll get it five hours later. Cost in January 2025: 103,500 dinars, or 77 €. Valid only for Iraqi Kurdistan. I booked a round-trip flight to Erbil with Austrian Airlines, with a layover in Vienna. No pre-planned itinerary in the country. I’m only planning to travel around the north this year. A recent guide in French about Iraq published by Shawn William in 2024. Very concise but still useful for essential info. No details on accommodation options in Kurdistan, which must be quite limited. Pierre Yves

Hi,

I’d also be interested in a little feedback since I’m thinking of heading there this summer (but by road).

Have a great trip.

Hello,

I can confirm what other travelers who’ve recently visited Iraqi Kurdistan have said: right now, there’s absolutely no difficulty getting around or finding accommodations in the region. There are lots of checkpoints on the roads, but no danger according to the unanimous opinion of the Kurds I met throughout my stay, from the north to the south of the region. The situation seems less stable in federal Iraq, especially in Baghdad, where there’s a risk of attacks. Also, within Kurdistan itself, it’s best to avoid getting too close to the border areas. A really helpful blog, Diana Lesko’s: https://www.theglobetrottingdetective.com/iraqi-kurdistan-travel-tips/ https://www.theglobetrottingdetective.com/best-and-most-beautiful-places-to-visit-in-kurdistan-iraq/

No problem traveling around Iraq—I just spent a solid two weeks there in a camper van. At checkpoints, if the area is more or less risky (mainly PKK zones), they won’t let you through. The welcome from locals, military, and/or police is really warm. Never felt unsafe. Whether it’s Mosul, Baghdad, or other cities, everything goes smoothly. Wild camping is fine. Don’t hesitate—go for it!

Getting an Iraqi visa is super straightforward. Here’s the address: https://eservice.evisa.iq/ This is the official site provided by https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/irak/ under the Entry-Stay tab. It’s really easy to use if you’ve already scanned your passport and taken a selfie of yourself—I did it with my phone. I got the visa immediately. I’m crossing the border tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Now, here’s a great post by schischi who visited Iraq in spring 2024. Here’s the link: "https://forumvoyage.forumactif.com/t3896-un-mois-en-irak-super"; And at this address, a list of hotels shared by Schischi: https://forumvoyage.forumactif.com/t4791-avis-sur-le-trajet-en-irak But you can also read the post from the beginning here: https://forumvoyage.forumactif.com/t4791-avis-sur-le-trajet-en-irak

Best regards.
Jean-François.
