Roswell to Tucumcari leg: Route 66 conditions
FR

Hi everyone! 🙂

We’re on the Roswell–Tucumcari leg. We’ll go through Fort Sumner. After visiting, there are two ways to reach Tucumcari:

Take US 84 to Santa Rosa, see its Blue Hole, then the almost ghost towns on the historic Route 66 (Cuervo, Newkirk, and Montoya). We won’t visit the Route 66 auto museum (we’ll do the one in Tucumcari). The other option is to take 252 and then 209.

The next day, we plan to head to our next stop in Las Vegas (the one in NM) by going up the Mesalands Scenic Byway (104).

Is the detour to Santa Rosa worth it? Are the historic Route 66 sections drivable?

Thanks for your tips! Marcalamar 🙂

Don’t forget to listen to Little Feat’s *Waiting for Columbus* album, especially *Willing*—it’s all about Tucumcari. That’ll help set the mood for the drive... Happy trails

Hi Lionel 🙂

I saw on Google Maps that points of interest are few and far between in this area, and I think the drive will be long and probably pretty monotonous—but the reward will be at the end of the road. As for your music suggestion, that’s really kind of you! My English is so poor I wouldn’t understand a single word 😅, but I’ll still give it a listen. Anyway, thanks for chiming in—it’s so rare to get replies from forum friends compared to pre-Covid times 😕

Have a great evening, everyone! Marcalamar 🙂

Hi there,

I really wanted to reply, but I don’t know this area. I did check out a bit of the route on Google Street View, though, and I have to say there’s not much to see...

Plus, Route 66 post-COVID has gotten pretty bleak... Happy planning!

Hi Usafan :) That’s really nice of you to say. It’s true this area is a bit off the usual routes, and my question is pretty specific. I’ll plan an itinerary we can adjust as needed. Have a great evening! Marcalamar :)

Hi there! Santa Rosa and Tucumcari weren’t great, but I really liked Roswell for a day! Some fun museums 😊 and don’t miss White Sands Dunes—it’s a gorgeous park! It feels like snow, but it’s sand! I’m heading off soon to see the cacti in Tucson and Yuma 🌵. Happy travels!

Hey there! 🙂 You're leaving soon—that's awesome!!! Our next road trip is gonna take us to some amazing spots, just like our last ones. We're planning a 3-week trip that includes Roswell and White Sands Dune, among other places. Some stops are just 1 night, others 2, and even 3 for Tucson and Sedona. Have a great weekend! Thanks for your reply! Yeah, leaving on the 20th and it’s gonna be awesome—we’re gonna explore southern Arizona, the cacti, Trump’s wall, the Grand Canyon by steam train, and so much more. I’ve been a huge fan of the US for ages. Don’t forget Tombstone near Bisbee! Have a great weekend too

Parking at Tomstone I grabbed a trolley tour for $10 on TripAdvisor and the mine tour in Bisbee

Hi there! 🙂. We won’t stay too long in Tombstone (visiting the various buildings and the cemetery) because we’re coming from Tucson and want to stop along the way, especially at the San Xavier del Bac Mission, and we also want to enjoy Bisbee a bit. However, you mentioned Yuma. A fellow traveler in the area posted photos yesterday of a ghost town about fifty kilometers east of Yuma. It’s the Castle Dome Mine Museum. It became a ghost town in 1979 when the mines closed. From the photos, it looks really cool!!! There’s a website (I know it’s always tough to make choices for visits, and it’s still a bit out of the way, but I’m passing along the info). Martine 🙂

I had posted the photo for the parking in Tombstone, but I’m not sure if it went through properly. The Castle Dome Mine in Yuma is on the itinerary since we’re staying there for 3 days. It takes me almost a year to fine-tune the trip, and I love doing it! I’m already planning the next one—the Blues Route, New Orleans, and Florida for 2026. I know your route, and I would’ve gone all the way to Amarillo—it’s nice, and especially the Big Texan Steak Ranch! Have a great weekend

Hello, a big road trip sounds great!

Just watch out for the weather—it can still get pretty cold once you climb onto the high plateaus!

Here are some spots I know: Phoenix: The Scottsdale neighborhood is the "old" part—it’s pretty nice. If you’re into architecture, there are lots of Frank Lloyd Wright houses, some of them totally wild!

Sedona: The chapel is a must-see—its setting is incredible.

Roswell is a garrison town that cashes in on its alien lore with souvenir shops, but there’s nothing too remarkable. The White Sands Dunes, though, are stunningly surreal.

Bisbee is a super cute old mining town. I didn’t stay overnight, but I would’ve loved to spend more time there. Make sure to check out the border near Naco just to see the wall—it’s pretty striking.

Tucson also has its "old" downtown, an old movie theater, and a museum. Just outside the city on the I-10, Pinal Airpark is a massive airplane boneyard—just like in the movies!

Have a good trip! !

Good evening! 🙂 For Pamela!! Wow, a new itinerary planned for 2026 👍. Once you catch the USA bug, it’s hard to shake it off—all for our enjoyment 😉 For Dennis: we leave on September 8th, and I think we’ll suffer more from the heat than the cold. But since I’m always freezing, I’ll still pack sweaters and a light puffer jacket for the end of the road trip!!! Thanks for your suggestions, and have a great weekend, everyone! Marcalamar 🙂

Oh, that’s funny—I’ll also be in NM in September, but more around Santa Fe. Hope it’s still warm there!
