Qui sait si les carte 3g, permettant en un accès internet partout ou les téléphones mobiles fonctionnent, peuvent fonctionner en Thailande.
J'en aurai grande utilité ...

3g (edge chez beaucoup de concurrents) est une technologie permettant le transfert de volumes de données importantes via un téléphone mobile par exemple!
Pour un pc portable il faut une carte pcmcia (qui contiendra la carte sim) donnant accès au réseau sans téléphone.
Pour moi c'est très pratique car cela me permet de consulter mail et autres...partout...

La différence c'est que le débit n'est pas le même, plutôt pour une utilisation basique(oublier les téléchargements)

Salut, CAT Telecom propose une carte PCMCIA Sierra wireless qui te permet d'avoir accès à internet haut débit. C'est le seul opérateur qui propose ce service mais il n'a pas de réseau GSM. L'inconvénient c'est que tu es obligé d'acheter leur carte et elle est chère (16'000 bahts). Ensuite tu as 3 types d'abonnement en fonction de la quantité de méga que tu veux downloader chaque mois.
Il n'y a pas de réseau UMTS en Thaïlande pour le moment donc si tu veux du haut-débit "par les ondes", c'est le seul moyen.

En Thailande, il y a des cyber café de partout. Et le prix de la minute est tellement peu chère que ca ne vaut pas le coup de se trimbaler un PC avec tous les risques que ca comporte !!!!

Ca dépend de l'utilisation qu'on en fait. C'est clair que si c'est juste pour lire et envoyer des mails ou mettre à jour un blog vaut mieux aller dans les cybercafés. Mais pour ceux qui utilisent leur laptop pour leur boulot, qui ont besoin de programmes spécifiques, ou pour les gens comme moi qui vivent en Thaïlande, c'est très utile d'avoir son propre ordi.

Ouais la carte est chère et le pire c'est que tu es obligé de l'acheter. J'ai dit à CAT que j'en avais déjà une (ce n'était pas vrai mais je pouvais en commander une sur internet pour env. 100$ US) et qu'il me fallait que la carte sim et l'abonnement mais ils ont refusé!
Malheureusement le système utilisé en Thaïlande n'est pas le même que celui utilisé en Europe donc avec une carte européenne ça ne marche pas ici.

Désolé mais ce n'est pas 10gb mais 1gb pour 35euro et pas partout dans le monde seulement en Belgique et ne dépasse surtout pas le 1gb sinon ta facture sera très saléé j'en ai fais les frais mais j'ai pu m'arranger avec l'opérateur(proximus) qui me reclamait au départ 927, 62 EURO pour avoir utilisé 1gb de plus!
a supposer que tu seras en ville et que ton ordinateur portable est équipé d'une carte Wireless
tu repères les Hotspot Wifi ( soit de ton hotel, de ta GH, du bistrot, de l'internet café ou des HS publics qui commencent a se multiplier ici )
je me souviens d'un post de ce forum signalant un site qui répertoriait les HS Wifi de Bangkok

Oui, vous trouvez cela dans des boutiques spécialisées. On vient de me proposer un module Edge pour mon ordinateur portable pour env. 7000 baths car je me plaignais que mon accès GPRS (avec module Solomon) était trop lent (115 kbits/s théorique). Ensuite on recharge la carte SIM en achetant des cartes 1-2 Call. Pour 300 baths vous avez, en fonction des diverses promotions de l'opérateur au moins 40 heures de connection sans fil.

Cela devrait fonctionner aussi pour les ordinateurs et pas seulement pour les portables puisque ce petit module avec une antenne se branche sur une prise USB.
C'est vrai que les cyber avec ADSL c'est bien plus pratique, mais quand le premier café Internet se trouve à 25 ou 30 km de chez moi !

Most of the cities have been upgraded to EDGE, including Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakorn Ratchasima, and many others. We have visited these cities and can confirm EDGE status. Many rural areas have also been upgraded: around Chiang Mai much of the countryside, including Pai, and the rural areas around Nakorn Ratchasima.
AIS has been the most productive, deploying EDGE in rural as well as city locations, we have had favourable reports about speed and reliability, particularly out in the countryside. AIS are currently running a TV advertising campaign claiming that coverage is now countrywide.
If you are located in a major city then we still prefer Dtac for quality-of-service and near 100% reliability. We estimate that 80% of the population now has EDGE coverage in Thailand, the remaining rural areas should be upgraded within the next two to three years.
EDGE is an enhancement to the GPRS network. The benefit to users is that EDGE runs at 80 kbps to 140 kbps, that’s two to three times faster than dialup. The tariff for using EDGE is exactly the same as for GPRS, it just requires an EDGE enabled GPRS card such as the GC83, GC89 or Sierra Wireless 860 to use the network to its full potential.

Boff... le GPRS devait être LA solution... mais il faut vraiment être zen, zen et zen ! Et parfois le réseau téléphonique conventionnel, qui m'offre aux alentours de 30-40 kbits/s est meilleur, c'est tout dire !
J'hésite à investir pour EDGE qui est, d'après le jeune vendeur passionné d'un magasin spécialisé d'Udon LA nouvelle solution...
Merci pour l'info, c'est vraiment très, très sympa... J'ai bien peur de me retrouver, au milieu des rizières, dans le 20% de la Thailande qui est mal ou pas couvert du tout. Je vais insister pour un prêt du matos afin de faire un test avant de reinvestir sur un nouveau module !

Je pense que c'est une bonne idée de faire le test avant. Et pose toujours la question chez CAT, peut-être que leur réseau fonctionne dans ta région même si, d'après ce que tu me dis, j'ai qques doutes... Il n'y a pas l'ADSL par chez toi?
Sinon il te reste toujours la solution de passer par le satellite mais là renseigne toi bien au niveau du coût de la minute!

Eh... L'ADSL c'est "pour l'année prochaine" et cela fait maintenant 3 ans que c'est "l'année prochaine" avec TOT...
Mais tout espoir n'est pas perdu, Nong Wao So à 5km est équipée depuis quelques mois.
Le satellite, oui, j'ai la doc mais j'hésite quant à l'investissement de base et mensuel, comme je fais l'aller et retour Europe-Thailande et ne reste "que" 6 mois par année à la maison.

J'habite Bangkok depuis 10 ans. GPRS est utilisable depuis plus de 5 ans et EDGE est quasi accessible partout depuis près de 2 ans.
Un abonnement EDGE chez DTAC coute 300 THB par mois pour 50 heures de connexion, d'autres abonnements sont possinle. EDGE fonctionne avec pratiquement tous les téléphones vendu depuis 2 ans, il suffit de connecter le téléphone au notebook via USB ou blutetooth ou d'accéder à Internet dirctement avec le téléphone.
J'utilise un HTC 3450 et cela fonctionne parfaitement.

15 baht de l'heure chez mon café-internet favori; écrans plats, ADSL, j'y grave mes Cd Rom de sauvegarde...
et je n'y vais que 2 fois par semaine, c'est largement suffisant.

Je vais investir dans un superbe écran plat;
on en trouve maintenant à moins de 40.000 baht l'écran LCD d'1, 20 m de diagonale
Une parabole motorisée pour moins de 20.000 baht et à moi le monde entier!
plus les videos de location bien entendu!
Ah oui, au Big C d'Udon, je me suis fait réparer mon Lap top en 2 temps 3 mouvements!
moins d'une heure montre en main pour l'ouvrir, changer la pile du bios, rajouter une barette de mémoire de 256 Mo, régler la montre et quelques babioles....le refermer; le tout pour 3200 baht; enfoncés les tarifs parisiens, sans parler que tu sais quel jour tu le mets chez le réparateur mais tu ne sais jamais quand tu le récupères!

Ah le Big C d'Udon ! C'est vrai qu'ils sont sympas et n'ont jamais discuté les réparations et/ou les échanges. Il faut parfois faire appel à un boss pour se faire entendre, mais ils sont top ! Je me réjouis de revenir "à la maison" dans quelques jours profiter des averses ! Et tester la carte Edge, puisque c'était le démarrage de cette discussion. Merci à tous pour les infos.

Après avoir testé GPRS et EDGE, je n'ai été convaincu ni par le premier ni par le deuxième. Mais l'ADSL de TOT n'est pas terrible non plus! Evidemment j'imagine qu'à Bkk c'est probablement bcp mieux qu'ailleurs en Thaïlande.

Bien sur ADSL est beaucoup plus rapide, on a de 2Mbits sans problème. Mais EDGE n'est pas mal, je fais +- 180kpbs en download ce qui est suffisant pour la plupart des toursites qui emportent leur Smartphone ou notebook.
Je suis passé à Pukhet en avril, la couverture GPRS me semblait opérationelle partout. Pour consulter les emails elle me semblait suffisante.
Je pense en effet qu'on est mieux servi à Bangkok, l'ADSL est très bon marché.
Sur Phuket, en ADSL, on a au max du 1Mbits pour les privés et ça fonctionne moyen. Mais j'ai vu que TOT proposait de nouvelles offres. A voir.
Pour des touristes qui ne veulent que consulter leurs mails c'est peut-être suffisant d'avoir un débit de 180kpbs mais vaut mieux ne pas avoir de photos en attachment! Mais quand tu vis sur place comme c'est mon cas et que tu as besoin d'internet pour bosser, c'est peu léger...

Je paye 600 THB/mois pour 1 Mbits (1024/512) à la maison (True).
Au bureau j'ai 4 connexions ADSL. Nous en avons une en 2Mbits Buddybb.net qui nous coute 500 THB/mois (principalement pour de la connexion locale). Les 3 autres sont à 1Mbits (entre 500 & 1000 THB / mois par connexion).
J'utilise souvent EDGE en déplacement et 180Kbits pour consulter les emails c'est suffisant. C'est l'équivalent de 3 cannaux ISDN.
je viens d'arriver en Thaïlande,
le point donc sur les connexions Mobile :
Modem USB 3, 5 G : 7990 Bath (vodafone)
Par contre la connexion est en 200 kBits/80 Kbits (EDGE)
Ce n'est pas trop mal en qualité, j'ai même fait de la visio sur skype.
Tarif : 100 Bath pour 30 heures de connexion
PS Important : Ils annoncent la 3G en décembre 2009

Pour ma part je prendrais la carte sim chez DTAC en prepayé c'est 212 Bath TTC pour 50 heures de connection et tu as 50 heures en plus en cadeau je ne sais pas quand se termine cette promo
dans mon cas à koh samui,
on peut trouver facilement des cles usb 3g avec différent forfait jusqu'à l'illimité en connexion autour des 700 baht par mois.
Par contre koh samui n'a pas la 3g et ca rame!
C'est à dire que l'affichage d'une page est bien trop longue pour que la navigation soit réellement possible excepté dépannage.
Par contre dans la location que j'ai pris,
j'avais une carte CDMA avec la compagnie Cat, qui est juste 4 fois plus rapide que la clef 3g qu'on trouve partout!
Le seul hic c'est qu'à priori on peut pas la prendre si on est un simple touriste!

Et les unités ne sont pas chères du tout.
Faut remettre les pieds sur terre.
Ce n'est pas vrai ! J'y étais en juin dernier et ma clé AIS 3g fontionnait parfaitement.
J'y retourne la semaine prochaine, je vous dirai si c'est toujours ok, y a pas de raison.

Je ne parle pas de mobile mais de pc, de laptop, de portable, de computer, d'ordinateur, tu sais ce petit engin qui permet de bosser mais aussi de communiquer par un truc qui s'appelle internet, soit par le câble soit en wifi. La wifi, c'est... non, ce serait trop.
Bref, j'ai une clé où c'est écrit AIS 3G, je mets ce suppositoire dans mon Eeepc et par miracle j'ai internet PARTOUT en Thaïlande depuis le 27 novembre que j'y suis arrivé.
Donc ok, la 3G n'existe pas en Thaïlande.
Il fallait que ça se sache.
Par contre il y a la 2G et meme avec la 2G tu peux avoir acces a internet mais le titre du poste fait bien reference a la 3G, pas a la 2G!
Et comme les grosses boites se tapent dessus pour ne pas perdre leur monopole 2G a la faveur du 3G, il n'y a pas de 3G en Thailande!

En fait ta clé 3G est aussi compatible avec le réseau Edge. Donc vu qu'il n'y a pas de 3G en Thailande (sauf dans le centre de Bangkok), ta clé se connecte au réseau Edge sans que tu ne le vois.
Donc oui tu as internet, oui grace a ta clé 3G, mais via le réseau Edge, et non pas la 3G.
Cela dit le réseau Edge marche correctement, mais il est beaucoup beaucoup plus lent que la 3G.

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m over in East Borneo in mid-July.
I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).

I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
