Feedback and advice on Java itinerary in Indonesia

Day 3 is missing. I don’t think there are direct buses from Surabaya to Jepara, but ask around when you’re there—you never know. Otherwise, you’ll have to go via Semarang. If the return boat from Karimunjawa is canceled—which happens from time to time—you’ll miss your return flight. Reversing the entire itinerary would protect you from this possible issue, because if there’s a problem with the boat, you could make up the time later in your trip. It would also let you check during your first stop in Jepara whether buses to Surabaya (or even Probolinggo...) leave from there. Other than that, keeping Day 3 in Yogyakarta makes the whole itinerary good, as it’s not too rushed. About flights to and from France: what will the segments be (especially in Asia)? Are the tickets already booked?

Thanks for your reply. I did indeed forget about day 3, which will be in Yogyakarta. True, it would make more sense to do the itinerary the other way around, but we really want to end the trip on the beach in chill mode. I’ll keep your recommendation in mind if the boat gets canceled (I hadn’t thought of that). Do you know how long the Jepara to Yogyakarta trip takes? For Surabaya to Jepara, we could do it with a driver. Any idea how long the drive is? For the tickets, bookings aren’t open yet, but we’re planning to fly Paris to Kuala Lumpur, then a domestic flight to Yogyakarta. For the return, I wanted to do Semarang to Kuala Lumpur, but I couldn’t find any options.

Will you still be in chill mode if you miss your return flight and have to buy 4 tickets back to France at full price? Just so you know, AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Batik Air offer roughly 7 to 8 daily flights each way between KUL and Surabaya. Travel time from Jepara to Yogyakarta by shuttle bus: 5h30. I don’t know how long it takes to drive from Surabaya to Jepara.

Hi Amparine, lovely itinerary! For getting around, I recommend downloading the TRAVELOKA app. You’ll find all possible transport options in Indonesia. For cars, the equivalent of Uber is GRAB or GOJEK. I also suggest booking your return tickets from Karimunjawa as soon as you arrive (I ended up stuck there for 2 extra days because I couldn’t get a boat ticket back). In Yogya, you can visit the Kraton at 10:00 AM—there’s a different show every day: puppets, Javanese dances, singing, etc. Don’t miss the batiks at Winotosastro on Jl Tirtodipuran. If you have time and like trains, check out Ambarawa station. T Yogya and the surrounding area have a lot to offer. Have a great trip

We’re planning a family trip (with 2 teens) to Java in June 2026 (2 to 3 weeks). After reading a lot of forums and travel journals, I’ve put together an itinerary and would love your thoughts and advice on the stops and routes.

Day 1: Arrival in Yogyakarta in the afternoon Day 2: Prambanan in the afternoon Day 4: Exploring Yogyakarta Day 5: Morning at Borobudur, then visiting the surrounding area for the rest of the day Day 6: Train to Malang, then Grab or private driver to Tumpak Sewu. Overnight in Tumpak Sewu. Day 7: Waterfall visits and exploring the area for the rest of the day. Overnight in Tumpak Sewu. Day 8: Trip to Cemoro Lawang by Grab or private driver. Hike up Bromo in the afternoon. Overnight in Cemoro. Day 9: Sunrise at Bromo. Trip to Surabaya by Grab or private driver. Overnight in Surabaya. Day 10: Trip to Jepara. Overnight in Jepara. Day 11: Karimunjawa Day 12: Karimunjawa Day 13: Karimunjawa Day 14: Karimunjawa Day 15: Bus back to Yogyakarta. Overnight in Yogyakarta. Day 16: Return flight

Does this itinerary seem doable? My main question is about optimizing the route between Cemoro and Jepara. Can we connect to Jepara from Surabaya? Any suggestions for things to see?

We loved our 5 weeks in Java and hope you’ll be just as enchanted as we were. Personally, I’d head straight back to Malang by train on Day 5—I don’t think the area around Borobudur needs an overnight stay. That would give you time to visit Jodipan Village in Malang. For the Tumpak Sewu waterfalls, you can easily do a day trip from Malang. In Cemoro, it might be wise to plan for 2 nights in case the weather is unpredictable—it’d be frustrating to make the trip and miss the sunrise! That’s what we did, but since we were lucky with the weather, we ended up wasting a pre-booked night (accommodation is cheap there) and came down earlier.
