Mon amie et moi partons pour 4 semaines en Indonésie du 15 juin au 15 juillet. Nous prévoyons d'attérir à Denpasar et de diviser le voyage entre Bali et Sulawesi (itinéraire de Makassar à Manado). Dans l'ordre, nous souhaitrons faire Sulawesi puis Bali. Mes questions concernent seulement Sulawesi puisque je connais bien Bali :
- Est-il nécessaire de reserver les billets entre Denpassar et Makassar à cette période de l'année ? (Denpassar - Makassar et Manado - Denpassar)
- Combien de temps pour faire Makassar - Pays Toraja - Iles Togian - Manado sachant que nous ne voulons pas courir, aimons visites, snorkelling et un peu de repos...
- Passons-nous à côté d'un autre spot sympa à Sulawesi ?
- Des hotels coup de coeur sur cette route ?? (belle chambre face aux rizières en terrasse ou bungalow face à la mer... ?)

Salut, pourquoi passer d'abord par Denpasar et pas directement Jakarta Manado? de toute manière, reserver le vol Makassar Denpasar ne doit poser aucun problème. Ceci dit tu pourrais passer tout ton séjour sur Sulawesi, cela t'obligerait moins à speeder et il y à beaucoup de choses à voir sur cet île, en quatre semaines, je suis loin d'en avoir fait le tour...

Le but était de faire moitié moitié entre Sulawesie et Bali, donc cela me semblait plus simple que de fare Jakarta - Mandao puis Makassar - Denpasar puis Denpasar Jakarta.
Qu'en penses-tu ?
Tu crois que l'itinéraire cité ci-dessus eswt trop audacieux en 15 jours ??
Quand il s'agit de voyager, seule compte l'audace... Ceci dit, c'est vrai que 15 jours à Sulawesi, c'est court, il y à de longues distances, des moyens de transports très aléatoires, (à part entre Makassar et le pays Toraja) et c'est vraiment une île magnifique ou il y à tellement de choses à voir. Mais bon, tu peux toujours te dire: "je reviendrai" comme je m'en suis fait la promesse, mais cela doit faire deux ans, bientôt trois et je me suis toujours trouvé d'autres priorités. Malgré tout, je pense revoir cette île aux formes étranges ou je n'ai jamais eu l'impression d'avoir perdu mon temps...
L'idée est de scinder le voyage en deux. Je trouvais sympa de découvrir deux iles visiblement assez différente.
Je sais bien qu'il est impossible de faire toute l'île, même en un mois.
Mais est-ce que 2 semaines et demie seraient suffisants pour faire le parcours cité ci-dessus ??
A partir de Manado tu comptes faire quoi? Il y à pas mal d'options, pour la plongée, beaucoup vont vers Bunaken, je ne connais pas cela me semblait trop fréquenté(!) je suis allé au parc de Bogani nani près du village de Batu puthi, une pure merveille, une plage noire comme le charbon, un village de pêcheurs comme on les rêve, les pirogues à balancier. Je n'ai pas réussi à voir le mini lémurien qui à fait la réputation de l'endroit mais j'ai pris une grosse biture avec une bande de flics locaux, un truc mémorable. Mais bon, la, comme vers Tomohon ou on peut aller voir fumer le volcan Gunung Lokon, les transports sont "à la fortune du pot", mais on peut toujours trouver quelqu'un qui pour une somme dérisoire vous emmènera au bout de vos rêves...

Après les iles Togian, deux possibilités : pousser vers Manado ou revenir vers Makassar pour reprendre l'avion vers Denpassar...

Oui, je voulais voir un des derniers chantiers de construction de voiliers en bois: Tanah beru, la plage est brûlée (et ce n'est pas une image), par le soleil et tout du long il y à des bateaux de bois rouge aux formes fabuleuses en cours de construction. Les villages Bugis alentour sont faits de maisons de bois colorées, l'eau est transparente, on se sent au bout du monde... Le nom du village, c'est Bira, tout au sud, il paraît que quelque années auparavant c'était très fréquenté par les touristes, mais à présent plutôt calme, aimez les gens et ils vous aimeront, mais il y à beaucoup d'endroits comme cela de part le monde...

J'étais à Sulawesi cet été, pendant 4 semaines.
Honnetement, esperer faire Makassar jusqu'à Manado en 15 jours, pfiou, ça va etre speed, voire impossible! Surtout si vous n'aimez pas courir!! Les trajets sont longs la bas (moyenne 30km/h sur les routes qui tournent et montent dans tous les sens, d'ailleurs, ne pas oublier des medocs pour le mal des transports, moi qui n'y suis pas sujette, j'étais quand meme pas tres bien!!). Pour les Togians, il n'y a pas de bateau tous les jours, donc faut un peu calculer... ou avoir le temps! (je te conseille Fadhila cottages)
Juste pour info: makassar-rantepao (pays toraja): 9h de bus
Rantepao-Tentena: 13h environ
Tentena-ampana (pour aller aux togian): 6h je crois
puis un bateau jusqu'au togian: 5h (et pas 3h selon le planning) et il faut encore apres rejoindre l'ile que tu auras choisie
Togian-gorontalo: plus de 12h
... bref, c'est long!
Mais c'est une ile absolument incroyable, et tres diversifiée, des sacrifices au pays toraja, l'ambiance cool à Tentena, aux iles paradisiaques des Togians, la jungle de Tangkoko, et la grande ville qu'est Manado. Ah oui, et Bunaken... des fonds magiques, des tortues partout et des poissons par milliers!! Sans parler de la gentillesse des habitants...

Ah et pour les vols, pourquoi ne pas reserver à l'avance? On avait pris Lion Air, et c'etait vraiment pas cher (Jakarta-Makassar, puis Manado-Jakarta). Une fois sur place, c'est pas toujours evident: il n'y a pas internet partout en sulawesi, et au moins tu es sur d'avoir de la place!

Pas indispensable mais plus prudent, et en réservant au moment où les compagnies font des promos sur leur site internet, tu économises beaucoup. Tu peux t'abonner aux newsletter des grosses compagnies (Garuda, Lion Air, etc...) et tu recevras les promos.

Je crois que c'est 2 jours de bus (à vérifier car je voyage en scooter mais de mémoire, les touristes croisés sur place avaient fait un voyage éprouvant supérieur à 24h non stop. Donc dans les 2 jours je compte le temps de récupération 😉

8 à 10 jours me paraissent un minimum raisonnable, on peut faire moins mais est-ce que ça vaut vraiment le coup comme tenu du trajet? Ha oui j'oublie aussi les heures de ferry pour aller jusqu'à Wakai depuis Ampana.

Les bateaux sont irréguliers, prévoir plusieurs jours d'elastic time... bien se renseigner à l'avance pour savoir si les ferrys circulent, afin d'avoir le temps de prévoir un plan B.

Je partage l'avis commun qui est de rester 4 semaines en Sulawesi. Je comprends ton envie de visiter deux iles (pour la même période de temps je voulais aller aux Moluques aussi et je me suis résigner sur place à rester en Sulawesi). Mais comme out le monde le dit c'est vraiment merveilleux. Tu ne regretteras pas de n'avoir "fait" qu'une ile.
Mes commentaires vont être un peu redondant avec ceux d'avant:

== > Makassar/Rantepao: 12h pour moi, parti le matin vers 9h. Puis Rantepao/Poso: 15h (une compagnie qui y va, faut pas avoir les jambes trop grandes) puis 5h pour arriver à Ampana. Et bateau 6h (si vous voulez avoir une couchette, vraiment utile) n'attendez pas le dernier moment pour embarquer. Bateau ultra safe.

=> Hotel TRES sympa à Rantepao duta 88 cottages (à coté de la gare de bus) mais un peu cher (20€ environ), bungalows privés en bois avec eau chaude. Pour les guides vous trouverez sur place.
=> Poso: s'arrêter à l'hotel en face de la gare de bus, de toute façon vous ne serez là que pour une nuit). 10€ environ, propre.
=> Oasis hôtel tres "korek" quoi qu'un peu bruyant certaines nuits. A deux pas du port. Contacte Dadang Setiawan au 0062 852 4100 3685 qui te sera utile
=> Togian: si vous restez une semaine je vous conseillerais de rester 3j à un hotel, 4hj à un autre. Car dans ces petites iles il y a vraiment beaucoup de choses à voir:
direction Black Marlin ou autres sur la même plage, afin de pouvoir aller sur Una Una en speed boat. Le moniteur de plongée Gonzagues st très sympa malgré ce qu'on peut lire ici et là.
Mon coup de coeur absolu: Bolilanga. Le LP te dit "n'ouvre que sur demande". Oui et non: arrivé à Katupat des gens de Fadhila et d'autres de Bolilanga te proposeront leurs hotels. Bolilanga est bien plus calme (il n'y avait personne en Novembre et surtout éloigné du village, où je dois avoué que le bruit des tronçonneuses entendu depuis Fadhila ont un peu cassé l'image bout du monde).
Ne t'attend pas à des fonds paradisiaques de partout cependant: il en existe des somptueux mais de ci de là la dynamite a fait des ravages.
UN excellent voyage si vous choisissez cette ile fabuleuse.

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.
I was wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as us?
• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

Thanks for all your contributions on the forum—they’ve really helped me plan my trip. There are four of us friends heading to Sulawesi for 20 days. Based on all your advice, I’ve put together the following itinerary:
July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home
Overall, what do you think?
I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
