mabul est tres sympa(population surtout) et s'ils ont continuer le programme de nettoyage systematique des plages, ca devrait etre pas mal mais ....rien a voir avec Sipadan a quelques encablures de la 😉 pour le snorkeling, franchment payes toi le deplacement, c'est inedit et tu ne regretteras pas .
Pour les tarifs, voila une idee mais ce n'est pas de lannee, alors attends toi a un peu plus ...

Les chambres chez l'habitant (longhouse) sont de loin l'option la moins chère pour dormir à Mabul. Il faut compter 50 RM/pers/nuit (10 E) en pension complète. Attention, il s'agit de chambres "rustiques" au confort très très sommaire. Ce type d'éhergement se réserve auprès d'un centre de plongée de Semporna. Lors de mon passage à Sipadan, j'ai opté pour celui-là:

Il me semble que Uncle Chang (un autre centre) propose une offre d'éhergement sur Mabul un peu plus large (mais toujours en longhouse).
Si nous passons à la description sommaire de Mabul (inutile pour Sipadan, c'est tout simplement une merveille pour plongeurs et "snorkellers" !!! Une merveille qui se mérite en raison des courants marins parfois forts), on fait le tour de l'île en 20 minutes, il n'y a rien à faire en dehors de la plongée, le village (Kampung) où se situent les hébergements est certes typique mais aussi très sale à maints endroits; néanmoins, une douce torpeur y règne, les locaux sont charmants (rien à voir avec l'agressivité des habitants de Semporna) et l'endroit est excellent pour le "muck diving" c'est-à-dire pour voir des petites, petites bébêtes !!
Pour le snorkelling sur Mabul (que j'ai expérimenté avec ma femme), disons les choses franchement, il n'a rien de très facile à partir du moment où vous voulez le faire en solo sans bateau. En partant de la longhouse, il faut traverser le lagon sur 400 mètres environ pour rejoindre la barrière de corail (à marée haute c'est long et de surcroît il faut lutter contre le courant rentrant; à marée basse c'est plus rapide mais il faut au minimum des chaussettes de plongée - le mieux étant des botillons de plongée avec des palmes réglables pour éviter tout risque de coupure). A ce propos, j'attire votre attention sur le fait que la visibilité est souvent très moyenne (environ 5 m) et sur le fait qu'un courant permanent longe la barrière à tel point qu'on est parfois obligé de s'accrocher aux rochers ! SURTOUT NE JAMAIS PARTIR SEUL EN SNORKELLING A MAREE DESCENDANTE...
L'option la plus simple, à mon sens, consiste à utiliser le bateau de plongée du club qui vous a trouvé l'hébergement pour faire du snorkelling "au-dessus" des plongeurs. De même à Sipadan !! A ce propos, il ne sert à rien de plonger à plusieurs mètres à Sipadan !! de la surface vous verrez aussi des dizaines de tortues, de requins, de barracudas... c'est une MERVEILLE !! même si de nombreux plongeurs émérites déplorent une raréfaction croissante des espèces... Le prix pour une journée de snokelling à Sipadan tourne autour de 20 E (moins si vous venez de Mabul) permis d'entrée non compris (40 RM/pers/jour à réserver bien à l'avance en haute saison auprès d'un centre de plongée - 120 permis sont alloués par jour, pas un de plus !!)

Quoi qu'il en soit, si vous n'avez pas encore "snorkellé" en Irian jaya, à Bora-Bora, aux Maldives...vous serez ébloui par Sipadan !!!!!

En postant ces deux messages, je voulais simplement montrer un peu "l'envers du décors" - ce que les dive centers du coin ne font pas et pour cause !! - et transmettre mon expérience récente (un mois en Malaisie du 10/07 au 12/08), nécessairement incomplète et partiale...
Quoi qu'il en soit, je répète que le snorkelling en solo à Mabul PEUT être délicat (le port de chaussons est tout à fait obligatoire dès lors que l'on entame la traversée du lagon à marée basse (plutôt à l'étale). Lorsque nous l'avons fait, au retour, nous avons même croisé un petit serpent dont la morsure est létale (inoffensif si on le laisse tranquille...). De fait, il vaut mieux utiliser les bateaux de plongée qui permettent de découvrir plus de sites dans une même journée; cela dit la visibilité n'a rien de comparable aux Similan islands (Thaïlande), aux Maldives ou à la mer rouge. En été, dixit les locaux, elle est souvent assez mauvaise (environ 5m) - de là le "surnom" des plongées à Mabul: "muck diving" !!
Quant à l'hébergement, tout dépend du niveau de confort attendu. Les guesthouse du kampung sont très rustiques (douche et toilettes communes, cloisons de 3 cms entre les chambres, pas de mobilier ou presque, nourriture peu variée voire mauvaise - à tel point que nos commensaux malais criaient "sauce soja, sauce soja" ("tiao liao" dans le texte) chaque fois que le dîner était servi (la sauce soja en question étant là pour donner un peu de goût au plat)... Et je passe sous silence les vaguelettes qui viennent frapper en cadence les pilotis de la maison - l'onde se répercutant aussitôt le long du lit (du genre j'suis en bateau ou sur terre ?), les détritus qui jonchent la base des maisons, les rats qui s'amusent parfois à visiter votre chambre...
MAIS, tous ces désagréments mis à part, nous avons vraiment aimé le calme de l'endroit, la gentillesse des hôtes, la convivialité de la terrasse où tout le monde se retrouve pour admirer le coucher de soleil, le temps gagné pour se rendre à Sipadan (1 h de bateau en moins), l'atmosphère bout du monde qui vous éloigne irrémédiablement de Paris, la beauté des coraux (hélas peu visibles depuis la surface)...
Au final, Je vous le redis, l'endroit mérite le détour pour peu que l'on se rende à Sipadan (où le snokelling est fabuleux !!! et tellement facile); sinon, il vaut mieux résider à Semporna, au Dragon inn (nous avons vraiment eu un "coup de coeur" pour cet hôtel après les affres de la Scuba junkie guesthouse). Je me répère, je me répète mais Sipadan est sans doute l'un des meilleurs endroits au monde pour le snorkelling eu égard au rapport coût du voyage/nombre d'espèces marines à voir (sans parler de la visibilité - meilleure en avril à ce qui paraît).
Comme tant d'autres avant moi, je vous certifie que vous verrez au moins 15-20 tortues par plongée et pas loin de 10 requins (grey reef sharks et white tip sharks only) pour peu que le centre vous emmène à Barracudas point.
donc au final Sipadan : OK 😉😉 le petit serpent que vous avez croisé, j'en ai croisé plus d'un !! ns ns sommes salué et chacun a continuer son chemin !! des requins : déjà vus, dès tortues, déjà vues ... des rats des champs aussi 😉😉 ça je l'avoue j'aime moins ! mais une moustiquaire nous en protège ainsi que des chauve-souris, quand au bruit de l'eau qui tape contre les piliers de bois, et bien moi ! j'aime !
c'est gentil de votre part de vouloir partager avec nous votre expérience, moi j'aurai mis les désagréments en derniers !!! et puis ils sont minimes, seule chose que je n'accepte pas c'est le manque d'hygiène et voire la saleté comme ler ordures entassées ... et cela se voit assez souvent ... mais qd on sait que chez nous sur certaines plages on ramasse des quintaux d'objets hétéroclités, oubliés, perdus, + déchets 😉

I’d describe myself as a "former diver." I’ve done around 450 dives in natural environments across different settings. I put diving on hold about 5 years ago due to work/schedule constraints and, let’s say, family reasons. Since then, I’ve still tried to stay in shape with hiking trips, running, swimming, and freediving in protected environments, etc...

I’d like to go jet skiing, either in Phuket or Koh Samui, but I’d need at least two jet skis since there are three of us. Can my 16-year-old ride alone? Our Bali-Lombok trip is taking shape, but we’d love to wrap up the stay with at least a solid week of snorkeling somewhere the coral is still in great condition. In your opinion, are the Gili Secrets in southern Lombok better than Flores Island, where there are supposedly amazing underwater landscapes?
We’ll be in Dahab again this October—we’ve been going since 1979—to freedive. In 2025, to our surprise, access to the Blue Hole is now paid: on top of the 10 € taxi fare, you have to pay $10 per person to enter the park. So we’re heading outside Dahab to the Three Pools site by bike, rented locally. Is there a bus that goes there, or shared taxis, instead of the tourist taxis? And where can we catch them? We’ve seen big buses full of local families on the site, but we don’t know where to find them. Thanks in advance!

For flight schedules and prices from Bordeaux, and ease of reaching Alexandria by bus/train afterward, I’m considering spending 4 days around Hurghada (direct flight from Bdx).
I don’t think I’ll go for courses to get my Level 1, since I don’t plan to dive often in the future—unless you think it’s better than doing 2 discovery dives in this area (I only have one baptism under my belt, in Koh Tao 15 years ago—amazing! But I’m not targeting trips for diving; I need to go to Alexandria, so this is a chance to get back into diving and snorkeling).
I’m looking for a spot to do some snorkeling, 1 or 2 baptisms, and explore the surroundings. I’ll arrive in early March on the evening of Day 0. I’ll have 3.5 days after that (I’m planning to leave on Day 4 around 4 PM by bus/train).
Is Hurghada completely to be avoided in favor of another area in the Red Sea, or can I still have a nice 3.5 days there? I know places like Dahab are more pleasant, but the convenience and timing of Hurghada appeal to me...
I usually prefer more authentic travel spots and places, but I’m willing to compromise on that if it’s still worth it for the diving.
Or should I only stay 2.5 days and head to Alexandria a day earlier? (I’ve already seen Cairo and Luxor a bit.)

With my advanced certification in hand for a few years now, I’m on the lookout for the best dive spots in Malaysia.
I’ve obviously heard about the Perhentians and Sipadan.
Someone mentioned Tioman too, but not necessarily for diving.
Do you have any feedback on these places for diving? (visibility, marine life diversity, etc.)
Any idea about the rates for fun dives?
Dive centers you’d recommend?

I’m looking for a destination in Vietnam for January to spend a week and go snorkeling.

I know Thailand well, and with my Thai friend, we’d like to try a different country.
This is the excursion we shouldn’t have done in Mauritius.
We did it with The Friendly Dodo, but from what I saw, it’s the same with most agencies.
Departure at 6 a.m. (even though the sun rises at 7 a.m. in August). Why? Because there’s only one well-known spot where the dolphins are, and all the agencies race to get there first.
For 45 to 60 minutes, it’s just straight-line navigation to the spot. No one’s looking for dolphins—we’re just speeding there in silence, full throttle.
Once we arrive, there are already 5-6 boats. The dolphins are there, sure. The boats fight for the best position, cutting off the dolphins’ path, and then—go, go, go—everyone jumps in. Not a single instruction is given on how to approach the dolphins respectfully. Result: everyone jumps in at the same time from 3 boats, creating a huge splash, and rushes toward the dolphins. Outcome: faced with this chaos, the dolphins dive, and you can’t see them from the boat anymore. The swimmers who are right in their path might see them pass below for a few seconds at best.
Everyone climbs back onto the boats, and as soon as the dolphins resurface, the same cycle starts all over again.
After 5 or 6 jumps like this (3 of which I didn’t even see the dolphins), it’s back to the port the same way we came.
Not a single explanation is given during the entire excursion about the dolphins themselves or how to approach them.
Safety-wise, I didn’t feel comfortable either with all the boats fighting for position. I bumped into another boat (no pain) while swimming, and I wasn’t reassured about the propellers.
With all this circus, my daughters didn’t even want to get in the water. The problem is, when you stay on the boat, you don’t get much out of it either—because as soon as the dolphins resurface, everyone jumps in haphazardly and scares them off again.
Having done the same kind of outing in Réunion, I can confirm it’s nothing like this (much better organized and ultimately much more rewarding in Réunion).
Under these conditions, this is an activity we never should’ve done! !

I’ve been in Malaysia for a month now and still have two more to go. I started traveling with friends, but I’ll be solo for the next month and a half.
We did a pretty classic route: Perhentians, Cameron Highlands (which I found pointless), Tioman, and Kinabatangan in Borneo. Now I’m thinking of heading to Redang Island—Langkawi is also an option, but it doesn’t appeal to me as much. Any feedback on these two spots?

Any thoughts on the diving there?
So far, I haven’t had much luck with diving—at the Perhentians, it was pretty disastrous with water at 31°C 😵😫
I’d love to find a nice island where I can meet people (locals and travelers) because going from a group of six to solo at the end is going to feel weird.

notre voyage en Indonésie étant annulé, et notre agence nous déconseillant l'Egypte, nous sommes à la recherche d'un lieu où nous pourrons faire du snorkeling depuis la plage (et en excursion bateau). Je connais un peu Zanzibar pour y être allé il y a plus de 10 ans, ainsi que Pemba (mais les prix ont explosé), et je me tourne aussi vers Mafia.
Est ce propice au snorkeling , des resorts ont ils des house reef où l'on peut voir des choses intéressantes (je ne m'attends pas non plus au niveau de la Sulawesi ou des Raja).

Donc, je planifie de passer l'hiver au sud de l'Europe, et ou vers les Balkans et j'aimerais savoir si c'est partout de la plongée en eau froide donc avec le drysuit et tout ou s'il y a des endroits qui sont superbes et ou je peux plonger avec un suit plus épais seulement même exemple en février et mars. Ce que j'aime en plongée c'est l'eau claire, les fonds marins attrayants, la vie aquatique particulière, etc. Je ne suis pas une fan d'épaves, mais je considérerai tout les sites / pays proposés :)
Nous sommes allé faire une plongée profonde de 100 pieds à la carrière Flintkote. Nous sommes descendu sur le site de l'autobus. êtes vous déjà allé plus bas? comme a la voiture?
