La destination du Sabah s'avérant trop onéreuse en confort moyen, je planche sur un itinéraire sur la péninsule (pour 2 personnes en août 2011, séjour plage, baignade et snorkel). Apres pas mal de voyages en Malaisie (et un nouveau du 27 avril au 9 juin, je suis préssé 😎)
Je te conseille le circuit suivant :
Kuala Lumpur > Malacca : En bus (je ne sais pas si Puduraya à réouvert, ils étaient entrain de rénover) :: Car Malacca est une chouette ville sympa, belle, et relaxante.
Malacca > Mersing : Pour aller sur l'ile de Tioman : Vélo, snorkeling, bronzette, traversée de l'ile à pied (attention: c'est fatiguant lol !!). Ma plus belle île avec Pulau Kapas :) A l'embarcadère de Tekek, sur la droite il y a des bungalows sur la plage pas trop cher à louer.
Mersing > Cherating : Mon avis perso est de ne pas y aller. Le bus te dépose sur la grande route, et franchement j'ai trouvé Cherating un peu mort. C'etait au mois d'avril 2009. Maintenant à toi de voir. Maintenant pour "balade pour voir les lucioles la nuit et balades dans la mangrove", tu trouveras sur la route principale du "village" des bungalows en bois (appartenant à une écosaise, si je me souviens bien) qui propose ces excursions.
Cherating > Kuantan : Bus (environ 3h de route) :: Y'a des choses à voir dans les environs, mais c'est dur voire impossible de louer une voiture.
Kuantan > Kuala Terrenganu : Bus (environ 4 ou 5h de route) :: Belle ville au bord d'une riviere c'est mes souvenirs sont bons. Et tres belles mosquées. Tu pourras en profiter au passage pour passer la journée sur l'ile : Pulau Kapas, elle est petite et superbe. Comme Kuantan, y'a des choses à voir dans les environs, mais c'est dur voire impossible de louer une voiture.
Kuala Terrenganu > Khota Bahru : En Bus :: Tu pourras aller visiter les iles Perhentians. Tres belles. Attention : De Khota Bahru pour aller sur les iles perhentians il faudra prendre un taxi, car l'embarcadere, pour y aller, est à une heure de route de la ville. Et il faudra s'acquitter des taxes pour l'entretien des iles etc....
Khota Bahru > KL : en avion avec AirAsia.
KL > Paris : C'est fini 😕
Sur les iles tu auras la possibilité de faire du snorkeling, plongées, etc... C'est très beau, mais il est vrai que le soir y'a plus rien à faire.
Je préconise souvent, voire tout le temps, le bus ... car il est vrai que c'est rapide, simple, peu onéreux etc... Prends des bus 2+1 pour plus de confort, sans oublier d'essayer de reserver les places de devant pour que cela bouge mois 😛

Par contre je pense faire d'autres iles que Tioman - archipel de Seribuat- (à cause principalement des sandflies), et pour Kapas, il y a pas mal de retours négatifs et je n'arrive pas à trouver un resort charme. Les Perhentian c'est déjà fait 2 fois dont la dernière en août 2010 😎, mais si je vois qu'il y a trop de bus ou de mauvais retour sur les iles babi besar, sibu et tenggol (pour le moment, très très peu de retour, tu ne les connais pas ?), je retournerai aux perhentian que j'ai bien aimées.
Kapas est une toute petite île oû tu te reposes pour la journée. Personnellement, cela a été : Bronzette, Cocktail au bord de la plage etc... :) Je l'ai trouvé belle. Ca permet de faire une pause après Kuantan et avant Kuala Terengannu. Tu pourras prendre le bateau le matin et revenir faire 16h le soir, pour continuer ton périple.
Je ne connais pas "les iles babi besar, sibu et tenggol", sinon il y a Redang à faire (ce que je compte faire cette année).
N'étant pas un fan de plongée, il est vrai que les îles ne sont pas les choses qui m'attirent le plus. Généralement, j'y vais pour faire un peu de snorkeling, et baignade au bord de l'eau. Et je n'y reste pas plus que 2 ou 3 jours pour soulager mes pauvres petites jambes fatiguées 😛
Maintenant si tu as le gout de l'aventure etc ... N'attends pas de retour sur les forums, et tente le coup. Beaucoup de personnes viennent sur le forum avant leur voyage, mais ne reconte pas comment cela s'est passé après. Ce qui est fort dommage. Malheureusement, cette année je vais éviter l'aventure car j'y vais avec mon fils qui aura 1 an. Mais je vais essayer de faire de nouvelles choses, surtout du coté de Bornéo.
J'étais en août dernier à Redang😉, d'où cette fois, direction l'archipel de Seribuat au niveau de Mersing (Sibu et/ou Babi Besar) et une autre ile au niveau de Kuela Terranganu (Tenggol), au dessus de Kuantan (je pense même que je commencerai par là, donc un vol Paris Kuala Lumpur Kuela Terranganu (dont je garde un bon souvenir pour y être resté quelques heures l'année dernière : la rue "china town" et toutes ses boutiques et son temple bien coloré, et le marché à coté, la belle mosquée tout près ...). A vrai dire j'avais fait un truc peut être un peu dingue, comme on avait plusieurs heures à tuer avant de repartir, on avait laissé tous nos bagages au taxi qui nous a amené du débarcadère à china town et qui nous a repris qq heures après pour aller à l'aéroport.
Je ne suis pas une grande aventurière, ni une grande sportive (à part pour le snorkeling -je peux en faire des heures-, je ne plonge pas non plus). Par conséquent, une balade en pirogue sur le lac Chini, la visite de villes (comme Malacca) ou de petits villages typiques, des petits marchés .... et le balnéaire sur les iles font font mon bonheur.
Dans quel hôtel étais tu à Kapas ?

En fait pour Kapas tu as 2 possibilités :
1/ Tu y restes 1 ou 2 nuits sur site : y'a des bungalows sur toute la côte. Le Yumi ... est accueillant et sympathique. J'ai oublié le nom complet.
2/ Tu y passes que la journée (l'option que j'ai choisit), en arrivant le soir on était aller se loger dans des bungalows le long de la rue principale à coté de l'embarcadère. Quand tu descends la pente (y'a une belle mosquée à droite) arrivé au port, tu tournes sur ta gauche et tu longes la rue. Y'en a qu'une, tu ne peux pas la louper. Et le lendemain matin, on a pris le bateau pour passer la journée sur l'ile.
3/ Tu arrives le matin, tu passes la journée, et le soir tu pars pour Kuantan ou Kuala Terranganu en fonction de ton circuit. Mais j'ai trouvé que les prix étaient un peu élevé pour le coin, par rapport à d'autres.
PS: Apparement, à cause de la crise de l'euro et avec l'irlande, le 1 euro < à 4 RYM 😕😕 J'ai envie de pleurer !!!
Sur Kapas je n'ai fait que de la bronzette.
Maintenant je me souviens avoir vu des gens en faire au bord de l'eau. Il doit être possible de négocier ca avec des gens sur place. Si mes souvenirs sont bons, tu trouveras des kayak, etc... De toute facon, tu loues des palmes, tuba et masque ... let's go !!!

Mais attention, j'ai vu sur certains forums des personnes qui ont eu des A/R à moins de 300 euros: Pour le mois de février.
J'espere que ces offres vont durer, car je souhaite aller en Malaisie tous les ans comme je le fais dejà depuis 3 ans.

Je suis verte, lorsque j'ai voulu réserver sur air asia x, le prix était d'environ 500 euros par personne pour un vol A/R paris - kuala lumpur et 200 euros pour kuala lumpur/Kuela Terranganu, alors ou qqc m'a échappée ou je ne suis pas douée, et j'ai pas compris sur leur site où on pouvait réserver les repas (faut dire que je ne suis pas une fleche en informatique). Et quand je regarde avec la malaisia airline, c'est 6.000 euros lol, donc pour le moment je n'ai rien encore, je pense tout réserver en février.

Sur Air Asia, les promos "d'inauguration" de la ligne Orly <-> KL ne duraient que 3 jours à compter du 22/11 (0h00, c'est-à-dire dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi.
Il fallait être là au bon moment, et avoir "un peu" de chance...
Pour les suppléments (non obligatoires, à par quand même les bagages), ils s'ajoutent lors de ta réservation.

Hello, je crois t'avoir déjà répondu sur un autre sujet. 😉 Je t'y disais que j'avais trouvé que les étapes Cherating (trois nuits) et Pulau Babi Besar ne méritaient pas le long trajet pour y accéder, et dans tous les cas un jour à Cherating aurait suffit (pour voir les lucioles), et si l'ile Babi Besar est jolie et était déserte en semaine (nous étions les seuls touristes, et y a vraiment rien à y faire et pas d'excursion de possible sur les autres iles quand on est si peu nombreux, or pour le snorkel on doit prendre un bateau car il n'y en a pas de la plage), je m'y suis fait bouffer par des sandflies.
Par contre, j'ai adoré Perhentian, Lang tengah et Malacca.
Après plusieurs voyages en mode plutôt road trip et camping, en Juillet, nous devons pour une fois prendre nos congès en Aout. J'ai regardé les destinations…

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.

• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home

I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
