De nature à être un voyageur "sac a dos" je tente de planifier dans les grandes lignes un voyage en Indonésie d'une durée d'un mois (mi juillet-mi août 2013)
J'en appelle donc à vos connaissances afin de me conseiller sur la pertinence de certains choix
En effet, mon désir est de commencer par visiter la région de Medan qui me semble moins envahie par le tourisme de masse puis de redescendre via un vol low cost sur Jakarta (très court passage)
puis Yogyakarta (Prambanan)
Borobudur (peut être surabaya)
Kawa Ijen
et enfin Denpasar pour un peu de farniente et de plongée bouteille (si la région vaut le coup)
La plupart de ces trajets se feront essentiellement en train ou bus en fonction de ce que je trouverais..
Voilà en somme rien de définitif mais une idée de base de bonne balade.

Nous sommes arrivés depuis Kuala Lumpur par Air asia pour Padang (mais il y a surement un vol aussi pour Medan)
De Medan je suppose que tu vas aller voir les Orang outan à Bukit lawang, . c'est OK!
nous avons pris apres 15J sur sumatra, un vol vers java depuis Medan qui va à jogjakarta avec escale à Batam.. mais on reste dans l'avion donc quasi vol direct.
cela évite de passer par jakarta sans beaucoup d'interet.(j'ai reservé ce billet à bukit lawang) j'ai oublié quelle compagnie mais ce n'est pas trop cher.. évite garuda plus cher.
ensuite apres 15J à java (jogjajarta, Borobudur et prambanan bien sur, Bromo et Kawa Ijen) nous avons rejoint bali en Ferry...
apres 15J sur bali, nous avons pris un vol air asia, vers Kuala lumpur. ce qui permet de prendre un aller et retour Paris Kuala lumpur (qatar airways)
Air asia réservés depuis la France.conseillé.

effectivement les vols depuis kuala lumpur sont bons marchés c'est ce que nous ferons.
En revanche je ne sais pas si on peut choisir de venir librement prendre nos vols sur place ou si la haute saison nous imposerait d'avantage de réserver à l'avance..
peut etre que nous prendrons alors le vol pour kuala-medan et le retour denpasar-kuala..
nous n'aurons malheureusement pas autant de temps que vous mais est il possible de faire le trajet medan - jogjakarta - borobudur - prambanan et kawa ijen en 2 semaines sans trop "zappeur" rapidement les différents sites et via des moyens divers comme le bus ou le train? (on aimerait beaucoup rester au moins 5 jours sur bali pour faire de la plongée ma femme souhaite passer un brevet sur place)
Une autre question me vient à l'esprit j'ai cru comprendre que le coût de la vie était relativement bas mais peut on compter 30 euros pour deux (logement et nourriture) ou faut il revoir tout ce budget à la hausse?

pour les vols en juillet aout, il est conseillé de réserver à l'avance, pour AIR ASIA en tout cas ( et puis meilleurs tarifs en réservant tot)
De medan, à Jogjakarta, il faut prendre l'avion!!! pas de train sur Sumatra et le bus est infernal (20H au moins pour aller de Medan à Bukkitingi au nord de Padang.. Au moins 50H pour Jakarta!!
Pour ton projet de parcours, tout dépend de ton objectif sur Sumatra.. si c'est seulement Bukit lawang et les orang outan.. c'est 3 ou 4 J
(4H pour aller de Medan à Bukitlawang, 2J de trek en jungle ou un seul, et 4H pour revenir à l'aeroport de Medan.
Ensuite Jogjakarta et ses environs borobudur et prambanan c'est 3J mini, et à Jogjakarta tu peux prendre un package tout compris, qui te mene au Bromo et Kawa ijen sans "perdre de temps" en 4J. c'est un peu speed mais c'est jouable.
Ils te conduiront jusqu'au ferry pour Bali à banyuwangi.
donc ça doit tenir dans tes 2 semaines.
Ensuite sur bali, si tu veux rester 5J , je te recommanderais Pemuteran pour passer un brevet de plongée (c'est à 30min de l'arrivée des Ferry de java, sur la cote nord, avec plongée sur l'ile de Menjangan), puis Ubud pour 3J. c'est difficile de faire plus et Ubud est bien central pour des excursion autour, tanah lot, tirta empul, par ex.. ou encore Ubud suivi de Nusa lembongan à une heure de sanur.

En haute saison les prix montent un peu..
pas moins de 150000 rphs soit 14€ pour se loger ( jusqu'a 20€ pour les premiers prix) avec parfois le petit dej parfois non..)
donc il ne reste plus beaucoup pour manger et se déplacer..
repas: sur Sumatra et java, 1.5 à 2 € pour un plat unique, sur bali plutot 3 à 4€ mini.
autre petit conseil: pour la correspondance entre le vol de Paris et le vol air asia, il faut prévoir assez large, car il faut compter au moins 20min de navette entre l'aeroport international et le terminal dédié aux low cost le LCCT (air asia), sans compter l'attente de cette navette...
Avec la recup des bagages et l'enregistrement .. pas moins de 3H entre les deux vols. parfois il faut passer une nuit à KL, ce que j'ai fait à l'aller.. hotel concordia Inn le mieux situé.

En ce qui concerne yogjakarta, je n'avais pas précisé mais il est bien sur impossible (ou presque) de partir depuis medan sans un avion ce que nous allons faire!
Tes arguments sont convaincants et puis il est vrai que nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre de nous en tenir à des bus et trains au regard de leur vitesse.
En général j'imagine que depuis yogjakarta on doit tomber sur un certain nombre de rabatteurs qui propose ces fameux forfait pack pour les visites...
et si tu as le souvenir des fourchettes de prix je suis preneur.
Pour la plongée sais tu s'il existe un organisme padi ?
j'ai pu lire sur d'autres post que l'on pouvait s'en tenir a 200 ou 250 euros pour le 1er niveau, est ce c'est ce que tu as pu constater?

mais pose la question sur le moteur de recherche du forum, tu trouveras la réponse en majorant un peu si la réponse est ancienne.
Ou trouver ce package... et autre excursion?? demande à ton hôtel qui lui meme est en cheville avec une agence.. veille à ce qu'il ne prenne pas de commission, sinon adresse-toi directement à l'agence. L'avantage de demander à ton hotel d'abord?: tu élimines ainsi les agences pas sérieuses, ... si tu penses que ton hôtelier est sérieux. Il y a plusieurs agence dans les quartiers ou les touristes descendent tel que Sosrowijayan.
compare les prix, veille à ce que tout soit compris (nuits et repas) ça peut paraitre un peu cher à priori, mais sache que c'est très difficile d'y aller par des transports publics. Tu pourrais à la rigueur te rapprocher en train vers Surabaya ou Malang et prendre ce package de là.
je ne sais combien ça économise, mais tu évites des heures de bus pénibles ( 9H pour malang, plus pour Surabaya)
Pour le Padi, non je ne sais pas le prix.. mais tout club sérieux le propose aussi bien à Pemuteran, qu'a Nusa lembongan, ou Amed..

Loc de scooter oui, si tu as deja pratiqué.. moi meme je l'ai fait, un scooter pour deux, sans avoir de pratique, mais j'ai choisi des lieux sans beaucoup de circulation ( lac Toba, nusa lembongan)
Visa pour la malaisie.. on ne prend pas un visa pour un vol, mais pour entrer dans un pays... la Malaisie ne demande pas de visa pour un simple transit. Un tampon de sortie suffit, puis de rentrée dans un court délai.
j'en profite pour te donner quelques indications pour aller à borobudur et Prambanan.
2vite de prendre un tour organisé, c'est inutile.
Pour Prembanan, prendre un bus de ville et descendre au terminus. le personnel de chaque arret de bus (sur l'avenue malioboro) par ex) te renseignera tres gentiment. Il y a un changement de ligne mais ils te mettront tout ça sur un papier!!!) compter 40min environ.
Pour borobudur, prendre un bus de ville, jusqu'a une gare routiere, puis un autre bus que les gens t'indiqueront avec le sourire.. compter 1H30.
l'entrée de chaque site est de 18 USD pour Prambanan et 20USD pour Borobudur payable CB, dollar ou roupiahs.

Si ton budget de 30 € par jour pour 2 ne comprend que le logement et la nourriture (pas le transport et les excursions, visites), c'est possible. Mais si tu veux tout inclure, alors cela devient difficile.
Personnellement, je miserais sur 40 a 45 € jour pour deux tout compris (sauf le PADI). Le poste de dépenses le plus important est le transport.
A Yojakarta, si tu prends le tour 60 000 IDR Borobudur et Pranbanan, tu le fais en une grosse demi journée avec un départ a 5h pour voir le lever du soleil sur Borobudur. Si tu l' organises toi même, cela te prend deux jours donc une nuit d'hotel supplémentaire.
A Yogya, nous avons pris le tour Bromo Ijen, dépose au ferry pour Bali a 550000 IDR (3 jours) auquel il faut ajouter la Jeep au Bromo 80000 IDR et l'entrée du Bromo 25000 IDR et les repas de midi et du soir. C'est l'option la plus économique en temps et argent!
Nous partons demain pour Flores et ne pourrons vraisemblablement pas lire nos mails pendant plusieurs jours.

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...

I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).
I need some expert advice on these two destinations for a 15-day trip. We land in KL and plan to stay for 2 days before heading to Borneo and finishing with an island for snorkeling.
For those who’ve been, what are your must-sees?
We were thinking of spending the last 3 days on the Perhentian Islands, unless you’ve got another island to recommend near Borneo.

The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:

Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before.
