Hi there, Could anyone give me some info about the international driver's permit in Namibia? Is it mandatory to rent a 4x4 with or without a roof tent, or is an English translation of my French license enough to get around the whole country? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hi,

Unless things have changed since, an international driver’s permit is required for Namibia. Rental companies don’t always ask for it, but law enforcement does.

Yes, you need an international permit for Namibia to present along with your French license. Be careful—in France, the international permit is free, but there are long delays. You can apply online; check out the blog "Msi Africa road trip." Have a great trip in Namibia!

Hi Magatchou, We just got back from a 15-day self-drive trip in Namibia. I hadn’t received my international permit yet, but the Tourmaline agency reassured us that an official translation of the license would work, which we did. It’s also mandatory to have the original with you. That said, the 4x4 rental company didn’t ask for it, and we were never stopped by the police. Wishing you a fantastic trip! Javelor
