Je pars avec mon ami 15 jours en malaisie au mois d'aout et voici ce que nous allons probablement faire :
arrivée à kuala lumpur on saute dans un avion pour aller à Kota kinabalu ou on passe une journée complète pour faire un peu le tour de la ville. Ensuite direction le kinabatangan et en particulier l'hotel Sukau Barefoot lodge qui a l'air bien sympas. On passe ensuite par le sepilok pour finir en beauté à Kapalai avec un ptit tour sous l'eau pour plonger à sipadan...Bref on est en train de s'organiser des vacances de rêve et j'ai quelques petites questions pour parfaire tout ça :
- tout d'abord combien coute le visa pour rentrer à sabath et est-ce qu'on peut le prendre à l'aéroprt à kota kinabalu?
- Est-ce que le transfert entre KK et le kinabatangan est simple, est-ce qu'il y a des bus ou des navettes qui le font régulièrement? J'ai lu sur un forum que voyager sans tour opérateur à Sabah était un peu compliqué.
- Entre le sepilok et kapalai la société qui possède les hotels nous propose de faire les transferts et nous font passer une nuit à lahad datu.... ville qui n'a pas l'air super sympas d'après ce qu'on voit sur les forums. Est-ce possible de faire le transfert d'une traite?
- Pour finir est-ce que les compagnies aériennes pour les vols internes (malaysia airlines et air asia) ont des limites basses en poids de bagages? Car avec le matos de plongée vous imaginez bien que nos bagages feront à peu prêt 20 kg.

Tu ne paies pas pour le visa (tu remplis un formulaire avant l'entrée sur le territoire et à l'immigration on te tamponne ton passeport)

Merci Cojo pour toutes ses infos... en effet on va plutot attérir à sandakan ça sera plus pratique pour faire le sepilok et la rivière Kinabatangan. Par contre je me demandais si turtle island c'était sympas d'aller y faire un tour? ( en sachant qu'on est 2 passionnés de plongée et de mer...).

bojourair asia fait payer systhematiquement 60RM (environ 14euros ) pour les bagages jusqu'à 30kgs
tu as effectivement interet à faire KL ....sandakan car le vol KK sandakan n'est pas donné ; mais tu as des bus reguliers (trajet long mais tres bon marché )qui passent par Ranau que je te conseille d'eviter .

Pour ce qui est de Sepilok, je ne le conseille pas vraiment, même si nous, nous avions eu une chance extraordinaire. C'est plus une usine à touristes qu'autre chose.
En fait, nous étions arrivés en retard pour le nourrissage des orangs-outans et les singes étaient partis... ne restaient que les hordes de méga-objectifs photo. Pas grave, on reste à se balader - seuls - dans les allées du parc à scruter les arbres à la recherche des orangs-outans. Et v'la t'y pas qu'une femelle (assez jeune) se met à descendre lentement vers nous, puis se réfugie carrément sur mon dos, attaquée par les macaques qu'elle était... un souvenir inoubliable. Mais, je le répète, c'était un formidable coup de chance.
Sinon, l'ascension du mont Kinabalu ne vous tente-elle pas ? 😛 Magnifique également, et assez sportif.
En tout cas, vous allez adorer plonger à Sipadan, Mabul et Kapalai, c'est grandiose.
Je me suis "contenté" de plonger en apnée mais disons que mon niveau m'a permis de voir les mêmes choses que les plongeurs bouteille. 😎 Par contre, c'est assez cher... du moins pour Sipadan.

Merci pour toutes vos réponses... concernant la période on part au mois d'aout donc je ne pense pas que la mer sera démonté comme pour toi cojo... pour le sepilok c'est clair que d'après les forums c'est une usine à touriste et le coté nourissage et zoo me plait pas des masses... mais mon chéri à trouvé un hotel sympas là bas donc on y passera qu'une seule nuit !
Pour la grimpette, même si on habite en haute savoie je dois avoué qu'on est plutot des flemards de la montagne et on préfère passer du temps sous l'eau... on va donc rester 6 jours à kapalai, c'est un peu cher pour l'hotel mais ça relève du rêve quand je vois les photos de l'hotel et des plongées (merci pour ton lien vers ton blogcanadagoose)... et puis on bosse dur toute l'année donc on aurait tord de s'en priver !
Donc notre voyage s'organise tranquillement et maintenant si vous avez des bons plans et des coups de coeur à kuala lumpur je suis preneuse !
avec air asia (low cost) tu as 0 kg en soute par défaut il faut payer pour ça en plus ( regarde sur leur site, plus tu réserves tôt meilleurs sont les prix, c est aussi moins cher de réserver a l avance les bagages soute
autour de sandakan, je te conseille un super plan: labuk bay, un de mes meilleurs souvenirs de Bornéo
cherche "labuk sandakan" sur vf, j avais partage qq photos en mai ou juin 2009, ça te feras peut être envie
ps tu peux aussi repartir de tawau avec airasia si tu finis par sipadan (Miam)
pour le matos de plongée faut vraiment etre motive pour trimbaler ça, ils ont t'y ce qu il faut la bas, mais surtout RESERVE AVANT SI TU VEUX ETRE SURE DE PLONGER A SIPADAN

Nous partons mon ami et moi sur Sabah pendant 10 jours au mois de Juillet. Le but de notre voyage est de voir des animaux (sans pour autant nous faire un trek dans la jungle) et de profiter d'une belle plage et de faire un peu de plongée.

Il n'y a pas a étre surpris, le sipadan Kapalai Resort est l'un des resort le plus chère de la zone...
Déja si vous avez une chambre a 100€ pars jours ca n'est pas chère cars en pleine saison leurs tarif c'est (pour 3 Nuit) 1984MYR pour un non plongeur, 2480MYR pour un plongeurs
pour le choix de l'hotel tout dépend si vous êtes plongeur ou pas, si vous n'este pas plongeur résidé plutot sur Mabul il y a plus de choix (Des GH Local, au resort plus lux comme le Water Mabul Bungalow)
Si vous etes plongeurs dans ce cas la votre choix dois s'orrienté vers le resort qui vous proposeras les prestation plonger que vous attendez...
c'est vrai que Sabah à l'air assez cher par rapport à la malaisie continentale ou par rapport à la thailande qui n'est pas loin... mais ça a également l'air assez incroyable au niveau de la faune et un hotel comme sipadan kapalai island resort perché sur des pilotis et au milieu de la mer perso me vend du reve... alors on a craqué nos économies et on va se fair un beau voyage cet été !

Sandakan ne nous a pas laissé un souvenir extraordinaire ! Le temple Sam Sing Kung (pour l'extraordinaire vu sur la baie );la maison d 'agnes Keith (pour le coté historique de la vie dans les annees 30 et l'invasion japonaise ) et un tres tres bon restau (l'ocean king seafood pour son poisson à la vapeur et au gingembre .Il y a peu etre autre chose à voir , mais nous y sommes restes qu'une journée .
D'ailleur si tu dois allé à Sepilok tu as peu etre interet à dormir pas loin du centre , il y a de tres bonnes gh et de sepilok tu peux aussi faire un saut à labuk bay voir les singes nasiques (que tu veras quand meme le long de la kinabatangan )

merci pour vos réponses rapides ! Concernant Sandakan ce n'est qu'une ville de passage dans notre itinéraire avant d'aller au sepilok ou sur le fleuve on y passe en tout environ 1 journée... je pense d'ailleurs que nous irons faire un tour au temple sam sing kung car la vue à l'air très belle !
Pour l'hotel merci cojo nous venons de faire une demande de prix au swissin!

Justement, je me demandais si on pouvait "éviter" les TO.
Donc, on ne peut pas du tout aller sur la rivière Kinabatangan par ses propres moyens...
J'avais envoyé un mail pour faire une réservation de 2jours/2nuits au Myne Resort, et j'ai été contactée par 2 TO auxquels je n'avais rien demandé.
L'un me propose 1,206RM net pour 3 jours/2 nuits (en fait 2jours et demi) et l'autre me demande 1338RM net pour pratiquement le même programme (pas de 3ème demi-journée)...
Pour cela, on a 1 rivière cruise le 1er jour et 2 le lendemain, la croisière de nuit est en plus (RM288 pour un boat de 5).
Ces tarifs vous semblent-t-ils normaux, ou est-ce disproportionné?
Peut-on inclure Labuk Bay dans ce programme, et d'ailleurs, cette ballade sur le Kinabatangan vaut-elle le coup à cette saison? (20/12 au 03/01/2011)

Nous pour la rivière kinabatagan on est pas du tout passé par un TO.. on est allé au barefoot sukau lodge, petit lodge avec 10 pioles sympas et une terrasse juste au dessus de la rivière !
Ils sont venus nous chercher à sandakan, et on y est resté 3 jours.
Pour les tarifs je ne m'en souviens pas mais c'était pas très cher il me semble !

En tout cas, pour tout le séjour que nous avons fait (15j incluant Nöel et le jour de l'an) + les vacances scolaires en Malaisie!
Je le dis d'autant plus détendue, que j'étais passée par un TO pour aller au Myne Resort, sur le fleuve Kinabatangan, qui nous as pris vraiment très cher!! Tellement cher, que ce fameux TO, devant notre grand étonnement d'une telle somme a très vite accepté une baisse sensible de ses tarifs.
Car il faut dire que sur place, au Myne Resort, la personne responsable nous a confirmé que l'on pouvait tout à fait réserver "en direct" avec lui!! Et les prix se trouvent carrément divisés par 3!
Ce que je te propose, c'est de te donner tous les renseignements sur les endroits(hotels, resorts, comment séjourner dans la Danum Valley sans être obligés d'aller au BRL pourtant imposé par le gouvernement) et les tarifs dans une semaine, car, là, nous ne sommes en vacances et je n'ai pas mes notes avec moi.
Mais nous avons passé un séjour remarquable à tous points de vue! Nous avons vu tous les animaux qu'il est possible de voir, même un orang-outan, un vrai, en pleine nature, au crépuscule dans un arbre!! c'était magique!
Nous avons vu au cours des boats cruises des tas d'oiseaux (notamment des Calaos Horn bill), bien sur plein de macaques, des nasiques, des écureuils volants (ça, c'était la nuit dans la forêt primaire), enfin, je m'arrête là, car la liste n'est évidemment pas exhaustive et je pourrais en parler des heures!! Mais je ne peux résister à parler de la night cruise du 31/12/10, au cours de laquelle nous avons vu et observé - entre autres - un troupeau d'éléphants et 2 éléphanteaux!! Magnifique pour finir l'année en beauté...

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.
I was wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as us?
• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home
Overall, what do you think?
I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
