Bonjour, je viens par ici pour de l'aide, je voudrais faire un petit voyage autour de chez moi (je suis de l’Aisne vers le nord de la France) en été 2014 . Mais j'y connais pas grand chose, et j'ai trouvé des astuces en visitant le forum mais sa parle plus de pays étranger.
Je me présente Aline 23 ans et demi, une fille de 3 et demi qui fera parti de mon voyage. Je vais regroupé plusieurs personne parce que seule et de surcroît avec une petite je veux pas courir de risque.
j'ai des centaines de questions, j’espère ne pas vous ennuyez :( .
Je ne fais que rarement du vélo mais je vais m'en acheté un au plus vite et commencer l'entrainement, quel genre de vélo: VTT ou VTC ?
Pour ma fille, je pensez a une remorque vélo pour les bagages et un siège bébé qui s'incline pour ma fille (+casque, etc)
je vais m’arrêter ici et poserais les questions au fur et a mesure.
VTC si tu veux faire de la route (j'imagine qu'avec ta petite tu ne voudras pas aller dans les petits chemins tortueux).
Quelles questions as-tu exactement ? Un voyage se prépare à l'avance mais tu auras sans doute besoin des bases:
Sacoches à accrocher sur tes roues (Ortlieb ou Vaude sont les meilleures qualités existantes).
De bons pneus qui ne crèvent jamais ? Des Schwalbe Marathon.
Un bon vélo pour rouler ? Prend une fourche sans suspension ou bien qui peuvent être bloquées.
Des pédales et des garde boues en métal. Après, niveau matos annexe, tout ce qui est de marque Shimano c'est bon.

tout va dépendre du budget. Tjodalv à raison de suggérer du matos haut de gamme, mais en bagnole la mercedes et super, mais certains roule en 205 ou kangoo: c'est moins stylé et confortable mais on arrive comme même à destination.
Pour les voyages pas trop loin, des sacoches entrée de gamme avec ses affaires dans de poches poubelles sont adéquates.
L'importance est qu'elles ne se détachent pas du vélo, ne rentre pas dans tes rayons et qu'elles ne gênent pas tes pieds pour pédaler.
Si tu prends une remorque enfant, ta fille pourrait monter dedans. Elle verra peut être mieux la route au lieu d'être derrière ton dos ou elle se tortillera à gauche et à droite pour voir devant en te déstabilisant l'équilibre du vélo. Elles sont habituellement 2 place, donc tu pourra peut être installer du matos aussi.
Il y a des loueurs de vélo et/ou remorques chez qui tu peux tester le matos et décider avant d'acheter ou même louer un weekend ou plus -
La préparation est important mais il ne faut pas exagérer au point de ne pas partir !
Fais par exemple une petite boucle de 2 jours (1 j aller et 1 j de retour) avec nuit sous la tente dans le jardin d'un ami(e) comme ça tu vois ce que tu as oublier, ce qui va bien etc. sans être trop loin en cas de pépin !
c'est déjà un peu d'aventure pour une fillette et sa maman !
je vais acheter le nécessaire au fur et a mesure (100€ par mois au plus).
Je connais que le site décathlon de pas trop cher pour m’équiper sa sera suffisant pour partir pas plus de 3 semaines?
Et pour le siège bébé j'arrivais pas a me décider, donc se serra une dépense en moins.

On a tous commencé un jour en demandant des avis, en lisant etc. L'importance c'est d'avoir la confiance de se lancer sans trop prendre de risque
Si la petite a bientot 4 ans, dans 4 ou 5 ans elle pédalera son vélo d'elle même.
Il faut aussi rendre le matos polyvalent si on n'est pas sur un budget illimité - notre tente sers pour la montagne, les Teeshirts respirants pour d'autres sports, je pédale en chaussure de rando d'été
on utilise les sacoches pour faire les course à vélo et le vélotaff, les sacs de couchage si on va chez les amis et reste la nuit (la tente aussi) - ça évite de faire le choix entre conduire ou boire !
et c'est quelque chose que nos fils fond - la fête chez les amis c'est obligatoirement sac de couchage et parfois tente
Chaque année on perfectionne en surclassant notre matos
par contre les sacoches Dkat je trouve mal étudiées, pour le même prix il y a mieux sans rentrer dans les haut de gamme (fait un tour sur le site de cyclo-randonnée pour ne pas les nommé, sachant que leur matos de camping c'est pour le trekking, on peut descendre un cran sans être ridicule.
Le matos occase peut être une solution si on s'y connait - fais aussi des recherches dans le forum qui est très riche, et continue à poster

Attention, si tu achètes des sacoches Dk, ne prends pas le 1er prix, car à chaque tour de pédalier tes talons vont toucher les sacoches. 1, 2, 10 fois ça passe§ au bout d'une heure Grrrrrr.
Je me suis fait avoir, je les ai modifiées légèrement et les ai passé à l'avant. Et j'ai acheté, toujours chez dK des sacoches avec le coin AV arrondi et ça passe.
Une des 2 paires est munie d'une protection amovible imperméable, donc il faut acheter une autre protection imperméable.
Sinon ces sacoches sont pas mal pour le prix.
Je peux t'envoyer une liste de matériel à emmener.

Nos enfants "roulent" en remorque depuis tout petist et nous ont demandé de faire du velo pendant toutes les vacances de Noel...

Tu peux t'installer pour bivouaquer une nuit si tu trouves un endroit sympa... il faut monter la tente le soir, la demonter tot le matin et ne pas laisser de trace de son passage...
Pour debuter, c'est plus facile d'aller dans des campings, tu auras tout ce qu'il faut : eau, sanitaires, douche, ...

Il te faudra imperativement un matelas, pour le confort et pour t'isoler du froid du sol. Je te recommande un matelas autogonflant.
Je te conseille les serviettes en microfibre tres legeres, qui sechent tres vite, pour s'essuyer en sortant de la douche ou de la baignade. Decathlon en fait de tres bien.
Et pour le matériel il faut je suppose prévoir une pompe, des chambre a air, petit outillage etc.

Nous achetons au fur et a mesure : un peu avant midi pour pique niquer, dans notre ville etape le soir pour le repas du soir et le petit dejeuner. Nous avons juste dans nos sacoches une boite de pate et une puree en flocons "au cas ou"

Les cartes michelin ou IGN : suivre les blanches ou les jaunes, eviter les rouges...
Aussi google maps en relief donne une idee de la difficulte !
Ne te prends pas trop la tete, prepare comme tu le sens, tu te feras ton experience au fur et a mesure... Il ne faut pas oublier qu'en route, on trouve des magasins, etc, de quoi acheter ce qui manque eventuellement !

D' ici l'été 2014 vous avez le temps de choisir votre destination. Je ne sais si vous êtes du nord de l'Aisne ou du sud, mais dans l'Aisne il n'y a pas beaucoup de voies cyclables, et je vous conseille d'aller un peu plus loin par exemple dans la baie de Somme et la côte picarde, où il il y un réseau cyclable magnifique et sécurisé pour rouler avec un enfant. Personnellement c'est un petit voyage itinérant que j'ai parcouru avec mon petit-fils, et c'est super.

Pour info les éditions Ouest France vont commercialiser au printemps 2013 un véloguide « La France du nord à vélo » par les voies vertes… avec des cartes de sorties sans frontières… d’Artois en Ardenne, de Flandre en Wallonie, de Somme en Avesnois.
Etant moi-même de l'Aisne, je connais assez bien le réseau cyclable du nord et de Picardie, aussi n'hésitez pas à demander des infos.

Par expérience je préfère de loin que mes enfants soient en remorque que sur un siège. L'enfant apprécie davantage également (possibilité de s'occuper, jouer, lire, se reposer ... ) et il voit très bien le paysage ... leurs nombreux commentaires, questions et souvenirs en témoignent ! Notre plus jeune (6 ans dernièrement) a quitté sa remorque cette année pour passer sur un Follow me.
Concernant la qualité du matériel nous avons du matériel assez basique. Nos vélos ne sont pas conçus à la base pour le voyage mais pour le VTT. Le confort (de couchage par exemple) s'améliore peu à peu au fil de nos voyages mais on peut commencer sur nos routes, chemins et camping de France par ce que l'on a ou que l'on trouve (prêts ...). L'expérience est la meilleure conseillère et surtout permet de cerner nos propres besoins et priorités avant d'investir lourdement dans ce que peut être nous n'utiliserons que trop peu par la suite ...
pour l'age et taille (et poids) d'enfant en remorque Kitouetremirépondra mieux, mes 4 fond prés de 1m90 c'est eux qui pouvaient me remorquer maintenant !
Essaie comme même d'emprunter ou louer du matos pour faire des tests - avant de trop investir - il y a des super vélos occase pour peu de frais mais fais toi accompagner par un cyclo expérimenté si possible. Idem pour les tentes et remorques
Près de St-Quentin, pour les 1ers entraînements, il y a la berge du canal qui est bien pratique, entre Lesdins et Seraucourt-le-Grand soit 15 km, c'est roulant, plat, et à Seraucourt on passe au port de plaisance et au domaine de l'Arc-en-ciel, ses étangs et sa brasserie aménagée pour les randonneurs, où il est agréable de faire une pause.

Quand nous avons choisi de partir voyager à vélo nous avons opté pour une remorque bagages, (premier investissement important et jamais regretté), nous l'avions reçue rapidement et contrairement à notre premier souhait nous ne voulions plus attendre l'été suivant pour nous lancer, donc notre premier "essai" nous l'avons décidé et organisé en 2 ou 3 jours : le but était vraiment de faire quelque chose de simple, pas trop loin de chez nous, pas trop long par manque de temps cette fois là : direction la baie de Somme. Choix de petites routes de campagne pour être tranquille, parcours plat pour un niveau de cycliste ... qui ne fait de vélo que l'été ! campings nombreux ... Cette courte expérience permet de prendre conscience de ce qu'il faut améliorer, de ce qui est superflu ...

I’ve already been to southern Argentina, specifically Torres del Paine National Park, and I’d love to go back to do the full W trek (I only did the shorter version last time).
I also want to do some hiking and maybe even tackle a summit. I climb and occasionally do some mountaineering, so I’ll definitely be going with a guide.
I plan to start around Temuco in Chile, with the idea of heading toward the lakes, then taking the Carretera Austral.
I’m not sure if I’ll go all the way to Ushuaia—it’s supposed to not be *that* worth it, except for the bragging rights of saying you’ve been to the end of the world.
I saw there are lakes in Argentina too.
I don’t have a precise itinerary, but what I’d love is, once I reach the southernmost point of my trip, to take a mini-cruise to see some wildlife. Any tips for that?

I’m planning a bikepacking trip in a few weeks along the Véloroute V81, also known as the Vélosud, from Biarritz to Le Barcarès.
Has anyone here already done this route? Any info is welcome, whether it’s about the route itself, gear, or accommodation. I’ll prioritize staying with locals as much as possible. On that note, I just signed up for the brand-new site *Guidon et Couette* ((www.guidon-et-couette.fr)), which offers free accommodation between cyclists across the country, but there’s almost no one listed along my route!

I'm developing a free and open-source web app for planning walking and cycling trips (and even car trips). You can create a route by clicking directly on the map to add waypoints, and it can consist of multiple stages. The app provides tools to edit the stages and the overall route, and to display useful information (distances, altitudes, and elevation changes). A relief profile can be shown as a graph for a specific stage or the entire route.
Once the route is ready, it can be exported as a GPX file, which can then be used with a GPS or a mobile navigation app.
The app is built in JavaScript and runs entirely in the web browser. It uses the Leaflet library and several OpenStreetMap-based services. Initially developed for my personal needs (I enjoy hiking and cycle touring), I’d be happy to share it with anyone who might find it useful. It’s free to use, doesn’t require an account, and the source code is available.
After testing it for three years across various modes of transport, I’m sharing this video of a bike packing case. It’s made from recycled cardboard and shrink-wrapped, with adjustable thickness and added bubble wrap depending on the level of protection you want.
Installing spacers at the fork and chainstays makes the packaging compact. With the fifteen-odd euros for shrink-wrapping at the airport, this case travels really well.

- Low bulk (1.10m x 0.70m x 0.25m for a large frame), it fits vertically in train luggage compartments and the total dimensions (x+y+z) don’t exceed 2.40m.

- Discreet packaging when dealing with bus drivers and train conductors, as it looks like an ordinary parcel.
- No need to return to the starting point to retrieve the case from your outbound trip, which you’d otherwise have to store somewhere, or deal with a bulky cover to pack in your panniers.
- You can still check tire pressure through the plastic film without damaging the packaging too much.
Drawbacks: Around 3 hours for this lengthy and meticulous process—removing the wheels, pedals, handlebars, and derailleur without misaligning them, then securing all components to the frame.

I’m planning to cycle from Morlaix to Brest (via Roscoff and the V45 coastal route). We’ll start riding on August 16th for 13 days (with stops for island visits, surfing, etc.). Is there a lot of traffic at this time of year? I’ve got two kids, 11 and 13, and we don’t like riding in the middle of cars (we’ve already done the Vélomaritime—Caen to Cherbourg—the Loire route from Orléans to Saumur, the Vélodyssée from Nantes to Royans, and the canals like the Nivernais and Bourgogne, where there were plenty of bike-only lanes, which isn’t the case on this route).

That said, I’m tempted by a suspension fork that could offer some comfort on rougher roads.
The recent appearance of gravel suspension forks on the market might meet my needs—at least on paper.
I’m particularly considering the RockShox Rudy Ultimate XPLR fork.
Unlike MTB forks, its travel is short: either 30 mm or 40 mm.
It weighs 1400 g, which is 400/500 g more than a steel fork.
Any thoughts or real-world feedback on this?
I’m also wondering about the durability of magnesium (lower leg) for long-distance bike touring.
And what’s the impact of skipping the manufacturer-recommended maintenance every 50 and 200 hours? That’s bound to happen on a long trip unless you carry extra gear.
More generally, how reliable are these kinds of forks?
I’m making an exception and creating a separate post this time, since it’s all about France. In May, we spent a week in Provence, specifically in the Luberon, exploring the cycling routes *Autour du Luberon à Vélo*, the *Véloroute du Calavon* (part of EuroVelo 8), and the shorter *Les Ocres à Vélo* route. Together, they gave us an amazing journey through rolling hills, vineyards, lavender fields still green in spring, and some of the most stunning landscapes in southern France.
It was, of course, the perched villages that impressed us the most. We visited Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Lourmarin, Ménerbes, Oppède-le-Vieux, Cucuron, and Lauris. Many of them are among the most beautiful villages in Provence, and it’s hard not to agree with that reputation.
One interesting point is the route of EuroVelo 8 in this part of the region. The official path mainly follows the old railway line of the *Véloroute du Calavon*, which is very comfortable and safe. But in our opinion, cyclists traveling EuroVelo 8 around the Mediterranean would discover even more treasures if the route passed through villages like Bonnieux, Lacoste, or Oppède-le-Vieux.
We were also pleasantly surprised by how safe cycling felt. Most of the route takes small local roads, but traffic is light, drivers are respectful, and road design really takes cyclists into account. It’s one of those places where you can ride peacefully even without separated bike lanes.

Happy owner of a Pegasus Estremo bike with a Rohloff hub, which is giving me trouble with the SF11-NCX-FT-E-LITE 700C TS 300/0 fork (serial number TD01329060). It’s starting to show its age, and I’d like to repair it to extend the life of my beloved bike.
The suspension is gone, and there’s an oil leak from the seals.
Does anyone know how to repair it? Where can I find parts that are about fifteen years old? Or where to find an identical replacement fork? Just to clarify, the Magura HS11 brakes are mounted using Firm Tech, meaning they’re on pivots behind the fork, facing the frame.

I’m landing in Madagascar with a buddy before the end of April 2026. We’re planning to bike around for about twenty days or so. We don’t have a specific goal other than exploring the country and meeting the locals.
Ideally, we’d prefer a loop route starting from Antananarivo with a good chunk of it along the coast. On the bike side, we’re used to riding 6 to 8 hours a day, depending on the needs, encounters, and mood 😉 Any feedback or tips from trips around this length?

Last year, my wife and I explored the High Atlas by tandem. Completely smitten, we're heading back in April (Anti Atlas) and May (High and Middle Atlas), still on our tandem.
Do you have any info on the track between Amezri and Ali Ait Nito? Are the river crossings in the Tessaout still there? It's not easy to navigate with a loaded tandem... especially if the river level is high due to this year's heavy snowmelt!

I’ve been traveling for a few years now with a high-quality mountain bike, but it’s equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. I live (pedal) with the constant worry of a breakdown (leak, air bubble, heat causing the fluid to...). My bike mechanic tells me it’s impossible to switch them out for V-brakes.
What do you all think? Am I taking a big risk continuing (alone) with these brakes? Thanks in advance for your great tips!
First post here to share a quick recap of our west-to-east bike trip along Algeria’s coast in January 2025.
It was just the two of us—my partner and I—with French passports and not a word of Arabic. No friends or welcoming hosts in the country.
Under those conditions, we’d strongly advise against going.
Our original plan was to follow the coast from Algiers to Tunis. We ended up cycling from Algiers to Béjaia, then took the train from Béjaia to Annaba (with a stop in Constantine), and finally biked to the border.
We were tailed by police the whole way—whether on our bikes, on the train, or even on foot while exploring towns. On top of that, we couldn’t wild camp and were limited to the few state-approved hotels that accept foreigners. Under those circumstances, connecting with locals was especially tough.
With such an omnipresent and intrusive police presence, we’d definitely recommend against this destination for bike touring. A really sad situation that completely cuts you off from the local population...

Duration: 3 months, from May 1st to July 31st, 2026.
In the attached details below, I need to add some "non-riding" days (rest days, basically).
So I’m looking to "shorten" the trip by taking ferries or trains for some stretches. Which areas could I skip?

I’m planning to bike back from Poland this summer. Does anyone know a way to ship it there without having to take it apart? Otherwise, it’s a real hassle to fine-tune all the settings before departure!

Just a few words about the loop I did by bike in Yunnan.
Entry and exit
I entered China through the Sino-Vietnamese border crossing at Lào Cai / Hekou under the 30-day visa exemption currently available to French nationals and others.
The process was simple and quick. A Chinese police officer even helped me complete my electronic pre-registration at a computer kiosk. I wasn’t aware this formality was required—it’s similar to Thailand’s TM6.
No issues with the bike.
I left the country via the Sino-Laotian border crossing at Mohan / Boten.
The atmosphere was a bit chaotic there, but again, no problems with the bike.
The timing
I visited Yunnan in February 2026.
Weather-wise, at higher altitudes (between 1,500 and 2,000 meters), it was around ten degrees at night and in the mornings, and around twenty degrees at the hottest part of the day.
I had two days of rain, so I took the bus to keep moving. Otherwise, clear blue skies.
Culturally, Chinese New Year fell on February 17th (and the 15 days following), right in the middle of my trip. Because of this, my take on the traffic might be off.
Accommodation and food
I always found a hotel to stay in for prices ranging from 8 to 15 €. Except in Kunming (the capital), where many hotels were fully booked (Chinese New Year). I ended up at a 100 € hotel with great value for money.
A bowl of noodles costs about 1.5 € on average.
Onboard electronics
Since my smartphone doesn’t support eSIMs, I subscribed to a China plan with my carrier. Otherwise, for much cheaper, Alipay offers eSIMs for foreigners that allow access to services usually blocked for Chinese users (WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.).
An internet connection is essential for paying with Alipay or WeChat, as this payment method is widespread.
I only managed to use Alipay.
Either way, always carry cash because sometimes there’s no signal, or the merchant only accepts WeChat.
Also, it’s best to bring a power adapter when you arrive rather than struggling to find one.
Traffic and roads
The Chinese aren’t reckless drivers. They follow traffic rules and watch out for cyclists. This is slightly less true in Xishuangbanna (the region bordering Myanmar and Laos).
In urban areas, there are almost always wide bike lanes, separated from other roads, where bikes, electric mini-scooters, and scooters share the space pretty harmoniously.
The roads are in great condition, and traffic is generally manageable—even light—except for one stretch (Eshan -> Yangwu).
Most traffic is absorbed by expressways, China’s equivalent of highways: toll roads that are off-limits to slow vehicles.
You’re never far from these expressways; sometimes you even ride alongside them, which can be noisy at times.
The climbs are usually reasonable, around 5% to 6%. From what I remember, the steepest section was between Menglun and Mengla, with gradients of 8% to 10%, sometimes more.
Riding at these altitudes—though modest—took a bit of getting used to.
The route
I didn’t plan anything in advance. My only goal was to reach Kunming. I don’t know why, but just hearing the name of that city, like Yunnan, always felt dreamy to me.
