What to see and do in Bilbao for a week?

Hi there, Can you share your experiences about Bilbao with us? We're planning to go during the last week of April, with our main goal being to visit the Guggenheim Museum. Despite our research, we're not sure if a week is too long or what there really is to see and do in Bilbao. Should we rent a car to explore the surrounding areas? For San Sebastián, it seems there are pretty convenient buses. Would a day trip there and back be doable? Any advice would be welcome regarding the itinerary, local transportation, hotels, and how long to stay. Thanks in advance! Maevita

Hi Maevita,

I know the area well since I live nearby. It’s really a very pretty region (if the sun’s on your side 😊), but I’d say a car is essential to really make the most of it. There’s the whole coast to explore between Bilbao and San Sebastián: Gastelugatxe, Mundaka, the Urdaibai reserve, Ea, Lekeitio, Mutriku, and Getaria for my favorite spots.

That should give you plenty to look into for now 😊.

Feel free to reach out again later!

Hi Christelle, Thanks so much for your info—it’s been really helpful, especially to see that a week isn’t too much. I was hesitant about buying the flight ticket. Now, I’m wondering how to split up the nights. Would you do all these visits from Bilbao, or how would you divide up the week? Thanks a million! Maevita

Well, I’m a fan of micro-exploration and I don’t like big cities anymore, so my choices probably wouldn’t be the same as yours, Maevita 😄. I much prefer Lekeitio to Bilbao, for example. If you’ve got 6 nights, I’d spend 3 in San Sebastián (to also visit Pasaia, the Jaizquibel pass, and Hondarribia), one in Lekeitio, which is central for exploring the whole coast, and I’d finish with 2 nights in Bilbao. I’d love to hear your thoughts and impressions, by the way 😊! Have a great day, Christelle

Thanks so much, Christelle! We’ll look into that. Our main goal for this trip is the Guggenheim Museum. Since it’s not exactly around the corner, we figured we might as well add a few days and see what’s nearby. I’ll let you know what we end up doing. 🙂

Have a great weekend. Maevita

Hi there

A week in Bilbao might feel like a lot, but you can rent a car and explore the nearby villages.

Here’s our experience in Bilbao and also our take on San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (a gorgeous hike just 40 minutes from Bilbao by car)

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Very nice hike 40 minutes from Bilbao by car)

Hi there,

I read your post about Gaztelugatxe and didn’t know you had to book a time slot for some hikes now! These days, you really have to book everything...

Hi Marie, I’ve been to Gastelugatxe several times over the past 20 years—there were maybe 10 of us total doing the hike. Then, around 2022, I went back in June. And wow, what a shock: huge crowds, buses, a massive parking lot completely packed!! I was so confused. But of course, the internet filled me in. A scene from *Game of Thrones* was filmed here, and ever since, it’s been crazy. They had to start requiring reservations to control the crowds. Needless to say, I won’t be going back. It’s probably still manageable in the dead of winter on a rainy day 😅. But for those who’ve never seen it before, the site is stunning—just get there super early to have some peace. Christelle

A scene from the movie "Game of Thrones" was filmed here, and since then it's been crazy, so they had to limit access by making reservations mandatory.

I didn’t know about the "Game of Thrones" series, but it really does attract a lot of tourists—just like places that are all over social media. That’s the case for the Caminito del Rey hike, where everyone wants to go now.

When you know a beautiful, nice spot that’s not too crowded, it’s better not to talk about it on social media, or it’ll quickly get "overrun" with tourists.

Hi Chrissand, Thanks so much for your reply and sorry for my late reaction. We hesitated a lot about this trip because originally, we were planning to visit the Guggenheim Museum. We quickly realized that a week was too long (for us) in Bilbao. Plus, since the weather in April isn’t ideal, we eventually changed both the purpose and destination of our stay. Since it’s only postponed, I’m really grateful for your feedback and everyone’s suggestions.
