Hello, I’m planning a trip for mid-September. 4 adults. Retirees—what should we do in Quebec for 3 weeks? Starting from Montreal. First-timers for planning. With car rentals. Thanks for your help!

Hi, In 3 weeks, you’d have time to check out Gaspésie, but you’ll need to plan for a loop of about 2,000 km from Montreal. Otherwise, if you prefer something more relaxed, you could consider the Eastern Townships and maybe a little detour to Ottawa. To help you decide, check out bonjourquebec.com—it should give you some ideas. If Gaspésie tempts you, you can do the classic loop: Montreal → Quebec City → Tadoussac → Gaspésie tour → Montreal.

Hi Boubou,

A few details to help you as much as possible.

Are you more into cities or hiking in nature? Do you like festivals? Do you want to visit museums? Do you enjoy gastronomy? Do you want to watch sports? Play sports? Do you want to meet people? Etc.

Please don’t answer all of this—just let us know your priorities!

Cheers 😊👋

Good evening! We’re more into nature. We’d love to meet the local Quebecois people. We’re from Brittany. Visiting national parks, staying in B&Bs, exploring Montreal... All ideas are welcome! We’re open to your tips and recommendations

Hi Does hitting the road bother you, or do you generally like driving? If you enjoy driving, I’d definitely recommend the Gaspésie loop, stopping by some national parks like Bic or Hautes-Gorges 😊

Just checked your profile—I hope you weren’t too affected by the floods

Good evening. Driving, yes. But not 500 km stages every day. We're used to distances of 200 to 300 km at home. Okay for a longer distance every two days. As for the floods, yes, we're in the area at risk of overflow. But no worries at my place—I'm on higher ground. 200 mm in 1 month

Hey, glad you’re not affected by the floods—sounds like it’s pretty "serious" over there. In my opinion, Gaspésie is totally worth it. In three weeks, you’ve got time to see a bunch of stuff without making the stops too long. Here’s a little link to give you an idea: https://www.tourisme-gaspesie.com/fr/accueil.html

Thanks for the feedback!

A natural spot that’s extremely overlooked by tourists who claim to love nature—largely because of the distance—is the region called Abitibi-Temiscamingue.

To get there, you’ll also cross through La Vérendrye Park. The route first takes you through all the villages of the Laurentians before arriving in the "Valley of Gold." What this region offers is forest, nature, and mines. Plus, since you’re planning to visit at the end of summer, there’ll be far fewer mosquitoes. Still, make sure to stock up on repellent. A stop at a tourist information booth will point out the must-see spots.

In Abitibi-Temiscamingue, the locals will be *so* happy to see you that you won’t believe the welcome you’ll receive.

The village of Bourlamaque is an absolute must-see. The former Opemican logging camp—now a vacation resort—in Temiscamingue is also worth visiting. You can also stop by local producers who sell their products directly to tourists. The main cities in the region are Val-d’Or and Rouyn-Noranda, but there are plenty of stops to make in smaller towns and villages too.

On the way back, you can follow the Ottawa River along the Ontario border, making a loop that’ll take you to Ottawa via Gatineau.

This route is very different from the traditional Gaspésie tour. Personally, after working in the region a long time ago, I was able to take a vacation there years later. A well-planned 10-day trip should be enough. You can head back south for the more "classic" spots or take extra time to explore Ontario.

Happy planning!👋
