What choices should I make for this northern Laos itinerary?

I just planned my itinerary, but I feel like it's too rushed. I’ll have to make some choices, but I don’t know how—everything looks interesting.

Oct 24: Arrival in Bangkok, flight to Chiang Rai (overnight) Oct 25: Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong (overnight) Oct 26: Chiang Khong to Houei Sai (overnight) Oct 27: Houei Sai (Shampoo Cruise boat) to Pakbeng (overnight) Oct 28: Pakbeng (2nd day of cruise) to Luang Prabang Oct 29–30–31, Nov 1–2: Luang Prabang (5 nights) Nov 2: Luang Prabang to Vientiane by train Nov 3–4–5: Vientiane (That Luang) (4 nights) Nov 6: Vientiane to Vang Vieng Nov 7–8: Vang Vieng (3 nights) Nov 9: Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang Nov 10: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw Nov 11: Nong Khiaw Nov 12: Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi Nov 13–14: Muang Ngoi Nov 15: Muang Ngoi to Nong Khiaw to Oudomxai Nov 16: Oudomxai to Luang Namtha Nov 17–18: Luang Namtha Nov 19: Luang Namtha to Muang Sing Nov 20–21: Muang Sing Nov 22: Muang Sing to Luang Namtha to Houeisai Nov 23: Houeisai to Chiang Rai Nov 24: Chiang Rai flight at 18:55 to Bangkok Nov 25: Bangkok flight at 01:15 to Barcelona

Thanks for your suggestions!

A lot of transit nights in your trip...

Chiang Rai (night) 25 Oct Chiang Rai - Chiang Khong (night) 26 Oct Chiang Khong - Houei Sai (night)

The transit night in Chiang Khong is unnecessary since you’ll have plenty of time to do the Chiang Rai-Houei Sai route in the same day.

22 Nov Muang Sing - Luang Namtha - Houeisai 23 Nov Houeisai - Chiang Rai 24 Nov Chiang Rai flight 6:55 PM Bangkok

The transit night in Chiang Rai is unnecessary because, with the flight leaving in the early evening, you’ll have time to do the Houei Sai-Chiang Rai airport route on the same day.

That way, you’ll gain 2 nights to lighten up the rest of the itinerary, which could really use it—but it still won’t be enough. You should cut out one more stop for a few nights.

, (one more stop of a few nights would need to be cut) And that’s exactly the issue because all the stops are interesting. I can definitely adjust the transit stops on the way there and back. Thanks for the tip.

My bluntness might make my following answer seem incongruous, borderline "swearing," but oh well, here goes:

And that’s exactly the problem because every step is interesting.

I’d skip the Pha That Luang festival because it’s the one that messes up your whole itinerary: inconsistency, having to backtrack, overall timing that makes it feel like a marathon... As for the temple itself, I found it clunky and graceless, almost as if it had been built by Soviet architects. If you know Thailand even a little, you’ve visited temples that are ten times more beautiful. And once you’ve seen those in Luang Prabang... But don’t let that stop you from spending a couple of nights in Vientiane—it’s my favorite, the most pleasant and relaxed capital in Southeast Asia that I’ve been to.

By skipping the festival (which is poorly timed in relation to the rest of your trip), you could get back a coherent and slightly less rushed itinerary: overnight train from Bangkok to Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, stops in the far north, Udomxai-Pakbeng, boat to Houay Xai, flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok, then Bangkok. Or the reverse route.

Hi Marie Jo, you're right—your schedule is really tight, *too* tight, because you’ve got to factor in transport delays. In Laos, fixed schedules aren’t always a thing.

If you want to save some time, I’d suggest going straight from Luang Prabang to Muang Ngoi on the same day, then stopping in Nong Khiaw for one night on your way back (boat from MN early in the morning, so you’ll still have the whole day in NK).

Then go straight from Nong Khiaw to Luang Namtha, skipping Oudomxai. (It’s a long trip, but there was a direct bus in 2023.)

That’ll save you two nights.

Hello,

In my opinion, to save a bit of time, you can go from Luang Prabang directly to Muang Ngoi on the same day

Make the Vang Vieng–Luang Prabang trip by train and then the same day Luang Prabang–Muang Ngoi? If the transport options from Luang Prabang to Muang Ngoi allow it, yes, that’d be a great idea (the first train from Vang Vieng arrives in Luang Prabang at 9:16 AM). Plus, with your other idea of a direct bus from Nong Khiaw to Luang Namtha and the 2 nights saved in northern Thailand, we’d be cutting 4 transit nights, which would help space out the rest of the trip. That way, the original itinerary starts to look less and less irrational time-wise...

Hi there, Oh yeah, that’d be a really good idea if there’s transport from Luang Prabang to Muang Ngoi by mid-morning. I’ll check when I arrive in Luang Prabang at the end of October. I’d gain another day—that’d be awesome. Thanks so much to both of you.

If I understood correctly, Tfcboy seemed to say it was doable.

Hi, No, what I said refers to what you planned for November 10th: going directly from LP to MN. We did it because we left LP in the morning and took the boat to MN from NK around 2–3 PM.
