It's all in the title: I'm heading to Krabi soon and want to rent a scooter for a few weeks, but after reading comments about all kinds of scams, I'm reaching out to ask where and how (read: *the right way*) to rent one. Thanks for your tips and advice.

Krabi Town?

I know a solid one, but it's in Ao Nang: Mr. Kord (081/2714009 & 086/6866010) Not sure exactly where you're headed...

Hi from Montreal;)

To be sure, you can rent directly through your guesthouse if possible. Otherwise, ask your host for a recommendation;)

Guides like Lonely Planet often recommend places;)

Cheers!

Not entirely agree because often the middleman (guesthouse, hotel) takes their commission and that gets passed on in the price.

The important thing is to never leave your passport as a deposit.

Hey everyone!

It's true that the price might be higher, but we're talking about a sense of security here.

For the passport, I've never had any issues, but I always made sure to rent from a safe place. For example, there's Miss Noy in Pakse, Laos... 100% reliable. Especially since her husband is Belgian ;) I never hesitated to leave my passport with them.

It always comes down to a feeling. People who run serious businesses don’t rip off their customers!

Thanks for the replies. Actually, I’ll be in Krabitown (and I plan to rent for 2 to 3 weeks to do a loop: Koh Yao Noi, Phang Nga Bay, parks, caves, etc.)

Just back from Thailand (Krabi) and I want to reassure those who want to rent a scooter. I rented one for 17 days (10+7 on two occasions) at the Backpack Hotel in Krabitown (just up the hill from the pier, opposite the Grand Hotel). Yes, I left my passport as a deposit, but they gave it back without any issues at the end. I had previously taken photos of the scratches and damage on the scooter as a precaution when returning it. No need, though—they just did a quick walk-around and, boom, here’s your passport. I also rented another one for 3 days on Koh Yao Noi, right at the grocery store by the pier (I don’t remember the name): same ease and process. Cost: 200 baht/day. So no worries on that front. That said, it’s for experienced drivers, because the chaotic traffic is, let’s say, pretty "sporty," but the freedom of movement (over 1,600 km in 17 days) is totally worth it.

Hi there.

99.9% of the time, everything goes smoothly. It’s that 0.1% that causes big problems.

No amount of photos or discussions will help when they claim pre-existing damage or demand 10,000 baht for a tiny scratch that costs 500 baht to fix.

The embassy won’t be able to do anything for you, and the police will at best get you a discount (for a cut of their own).

And then, reading through the experiences shared on forums or seeing reports on this issue, you’ll regret leaving your passport behind.

But a lot of *farangs* go there thinking the law applies the same way as back home. That’s a big misunderstanding of the country and playing with fire!

In the end, everyone takes the risks they feel they should take...

Hi,

And you think that means NO PROBLEM?

For the passport, they had plenty of time to make a copy.

Logically, you took the photos in front of them because if not, you could scratch it and then take a photo—too easy to cheat. So, since they saw you taking photos, they know they’ll have to wait for another sucker.

Hi, If you could share the location of your scooter rental in Ao Nang... Thanks in advance.

Mr. Kord’s phone number is a bit higher up in the thread.

The shop is on the right, about 100 m up from the beach toward the McDonald’s. There are a bunch of scooters chained up out front and a Mr. Kord sign with a steering wheel on the house facade.

Have a great trip!

Definitely not Mr. Kord—he’s one of the two biggest scammers in Ao Nang.

I think their trip was in 2016 :)

Probably the scooter itself doesn’t exist anymore.
