Mediterranean Bike Tour: Crossing Algeria, Egypt, and Libya

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to bike around the Mediterranean. I’m supposed to go through North Africa, but it seems a bit complicated. Visas and travel in Algeria and Egypt only work if you book a hotel (no nights spent outside?). Libya is generally very unclear, and it seems you can only travel there with a local guide (which doesn’t exist for bike trips). If necessary, I’d skip Libya, but neither a bus ride nor a boat detour seems possible to enter Egypt.

Does anyone have tips on how to get around these issues and secure a visa?

Thanks for any advice!

Hello everyone, First off, for now, **avoid Algeria** at all costs, given the current tensions between the two countries??? Also, Libya is still considered a war zone and unstable. Worse, even if you have a visa to enter, all borders between Libya and Egypt have been closed since 2012, I believe, and aren’t likely to reopen anytime soon. Plus, on the Egyptian side, there’s a 100 km limit you can’t cross before the border—so in the Siwa Oasis, don’t go any further. On top of that, in Egypt, you can’t travel on foot or by bike between cities. So, in short, it’s a no-go—but within Egyptian cities, you *can* bike, just be very careful. We’ve never been hit by a car, but there’s no such thing as zero risk. For the visa, don’t bother getting it before your trip—just grab an e-visa on arrival in the customs hall of any Egyptian airport for around 25 €, payable in cash. Any other questions? Thoutmosis

Hi Gregor,

Regarding Libya, we went there in 2007. As soon as we arrived, we had a guide waiting for us at the airport (travel agency requirement). Not a step without a guide except at the hotel. For the desert, another guide, so it wasn’t easy. As for Egypt, I personally saw very few bikes, except for some locals.

Hope this helps.

Hello everyone, 2007 was possible, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. The Algeria-Libya border is open ONLY for trade, so for commercial purposes—crossing for individuals is strictly forbidden. There’s a request to reopen a crossing for people solely to visit family or for medical reasons. In any case, the Algeria-Egypt border is closed. Thoutmosis

Thanks so much for the info! Is there any way to cross the border by bus from Tunisia into Libya?

Otherwise, I’d skip Libya, but I can’t find any alternative to get from Tunisia to Egypt (except by plane)...

Hi everyone, From Algeria or Tunisia, it's the same—foreigners are completely banned! There’s no public maritime connection (ferry) between Tunisia and Egypt. Since 2021, there have been discussions between the two countries to establish a maritime link, but as of now, nothing has been implemented yet. Thoutmosis
