Hi there, We're heading to Japan in November and planning to rent a car. According to the Japanese embassy, the rules for translating the license have changed. You can no longer do it from France since April 1st. Has anyone already tried the new process?

I’m in the same situation as you and did some research.

On the Japan Automobile Federation website, it says that some embassies can produce this document. I contacted the French Embassy in Japan, and they told me they’re not authorized to do it.

I’ve concluded there are only two options left: 1) Use a service provider with home delivery in France. Some have great reviews, so it should work! But expect to pay between 70 € and 80 €. 2) Apply through the JAF website (4000 yen, about 24 €) with two precautions:

It’s normally not possible from France—the site blocks us—but you can bypass this by using a VPN (I have one included with my antivirus) with a Japanese IP address. I tested it, and it works. The law has changed, and contrary to what I’ve read/seen online or even in the *Guide Vert*, you no longer receive the document by email. Instead, you get a link valid for only 7 days to print it at local stores, which means you have to apply almost at the last minute. Not exactly reassuring.

Also, note that the document is no longer valid for life but only for 1 year.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, Thanks for this valuable info. I didn’t want to wait until I was already in Japan to apply, but after reading your post, I’ll do it just before I leave.

You're welcome!

From everything I've read online about printing it on the spot, the main concern is making sure you can find a shop, especially if you're picking up the rental car at the airport. But it seems doable.

You can check the 7-Eleven website (a chain of convenience stores where you can print the document) for Japan: https://www.sej.co.jp/in/en.html For example, there are two stores at Tokyo Airport.

Hello,

Hope you're doing well.

A quick search points to this agency, for example, which handles it for 63 €.

Sure, it's a 40 € difference, but it saves the stress of doing it last minute. Others also offer this service, so it's worth comparing.

Hello,

Thanks, I'm doing well—I hope you are too, even if I'm not exactly comfortable planning a road trip so far from my favorite destination (the US)! But these are happy problems to have...

Thanks for the link. That’s hilarious—I’d seen that site before, but it was quoting me $US75, which surprised me. Maybe it was because I was using my VPN? With your link, I’m directed to the French site, and it’s actually a good deal (66 € plus 3 € for shipping via La Poste). And most importantly, they have excellent reviews on TrustPilot: 4.6/5 from 17,700 reviews!

I’ll check it out, and I agree with you—better not to take any risks. Sure, it’s 40 € more expensive, but at least I’ll be sure to have the document before I leave. Especially given the cost of such a trip!

But I’m still wondering whether we’ll rent a car or take the train. To be continued!
