D'Assa à Es-Samara par le caidat du Labouirat
R103 en goudron sur 140 km environ puis piste.
De temps en temps l'armée interdit la zone au delà de Zag mais vous ne le savez qu'en arrivant à Zag (aucune info à Assa) quand les militaires vous font faire demi-tour ce qui fait 160 km l'A+R.
Mes 2 tentatives ayant échoué, je ne peux vous renseigner sur l'état de la piste

Je ne suis pas sûr qu'il y ai le goudron pour aller à Labouirat depuis la bifurcation de la route Assa-Zag, en tout cas, il y avait une bonne piste jusqu'à Labouirat en 2015, déjà, beaucoup de sable vers Labouirat, après, c'est de la piste jusqu'à la route de El Mahabes-Smara mais les choses changent vite au Maroc. Quand même, renseigne toi bien avant de partir, sans quelques indications de GPS, ce ne sera pas simple, il n'y a pas "une piste" et ce n'est pas sûr que tu arrives jusqu'à Smara sur une seule journée.
Je suppose que quand tu parles de routes pavées, tu fait allusion à quelques tronçons subsistants d'anciennes routes espagnoles qui reliaient les forts. Il est souvent plus confortable de rouler par côté, il manque pas mal de pavés..........

Se loger à Labouirat : à moins que le village ai bien changé, je ne crois pas que tu trouveras dans un guide "les hébergements à Labouirat", un peu comme le bureau de poste d'El Farciya ! Au mieux, il y avait un hôtel à Assa mais dans quel état ? Par contre à Assa, il y a tout pour ravitailler, particulièrement un souk centre ville, boulangerie, gargotes où tu manges pour pas grand chose et une ou 2 stations carburant. Attention, ils parlent souvent en ancienne monnaie dont je ne sais pas le nom mais ne crains pas de te faire arnaquer.
Pour le bivouac, à partir de 17 h, si un endroit te parait favorable, reste y. Même près de la piste, il y a peu de chance qu'il y ai du passage. Tu pourrais croiser quelques nomades sans problème. Évite pour le confort la proximité de Assa ou Smara. A Smara, camping sympathique environ 12 km sur la route de Tantan. Possibilité de dormir dans une belle salle.
Pour une trace, je t'envoie en MP mais je dois la vérifier. Êtes vous plusieurs véhicules ? Bien que peu de passages soient sableux.

C'est ce que je pensais mais en cas de faire une erreur, je préfère m'abstenir, d'autant plus que je croyais que le Riad valait 100 MDH. Je sais qu'on m'avait présenté une facture de déjeuner à Assa qui m'avait apeuré. Le serveur avait vite compris et rectifié.
J'espère que tout va bien à Aglou, ici, pas de crainte de manquer d'eau.
Te souviens tu que tu as failli me suivre à Smara ? Y es tu allé par les pistes d'Assa ou M'Seied ?

Ici, il a plu un peu....... mais ce n'est rien par rapport au déficit, le niveau de l'eau de la réserve du barrage qui nous alimente , est quasi nul, cela fait peur!

je suis passé par là en février 2018. il y avait des travaux pour faire une piste ou route jusqu’à leibouira depuis ce doit être fini. A Lebouira il n'y a rien ni station service ni hôtel mais comme ce n'est pas loin de Assa, de mémoire il faut a peine 4 a 5 h, ensuite c'est de la belle piste, tu as intérêt a avoir une trace sur ton gps car les pistes s'entrecroisent énormément. Avant Haouza j'avais été contrôlé par les militaires qui ne comprenaient pas pourquoi j'étais sur la piste alors qu'il y a une route toute récente qui va a Smara. La traversée de la seguiet Al Hamra peu être difficile si il a plu récemment, il faut être vigilent, le sol semble porteur et d'un coup tu te retrouve dans la boue si la croûte n'est pas assez épaisse. (Expérience vécue en 2003)
Il y a une ancienne route espagnole avant Haouza qui va jusqu'a Smara mais comme dit plus haut tu n'auras aucun plaisir dessus tellement elle est défoncée.
Enfin si tu aimes la solitude c'est là ou il faut aller tu ne verras personne, si tu es seul vaut mieux avoir un tel sat en cas de pépin.
J'étais allé jusqu'a Bir Gandouz en passant par Aousserd, je voulais essayer de passer pour aller voir l'épave du Pélican mais je me suis fais refoulé fermement.
En 12 jours de pistes j'ai vu a part les 3 postes militaires seulement 2 voitures
Paysages de désert rocailleux a perte de vue, le pied quoi!

bonjour piste réalisée en mars sans probleme assa leibouirat goudronnée puis empierré peu apres liebouirat il faut rejoindre sur la gauche la piste du dakar, le repere est un algego (logement du contrôle de passage, sans aucune difficulté) a une distance de 200 ou 300 metres sur une bute a gauche de la piste.A partir de la, démarre la piste du dakar tracé a chaque coisement par d'importants merlos de terre .A mon avis en janvier évité la partie marécageuse car meme en mars on ce fait peur.Dormez a assa dans la palmeraie c'est une maison d'hotes tenue par les habitants dans l'ancienne medina, lieu et accueil superbe .Pour idée on est parti d'Assa vers 8heures le matin arrivé a 14 heures a smarra avec un defender 130 et en jardinant un peu dans la premierre partie.Une trace gps est tout de même indispnssable , il est a noté une bonne couverture téléphonique
. Dormez a assa dans la palmeraie c'est une maison d'hotes tenue par les habitants dans l'ancienne medina, lieu et accueil superbe

C'est quand même dommage de ne pas profiter un peu plus de ce morceau de désert par un bivouac. Bien sûr que c'est possible sur la journée.

Il n' y a qu' une maison d' hôtes qui est dans la palmeraie.
C' est ce qui est dit au dessus. Tu sais qu' il n' y en a pas d' autre. Tu n'imagines pas quand même que je tairai le nom si je le connaissais?
Et puis ...dans cette région il y a peu de chance qu' elle soit bondée.

J’avoue être insistante , mais seule , crevée et sans être sûre qu’il y ait quelqu’un je préférerais avoir du solide et je ne trouve rien sur le net sauf un autre hôtel que l'infâme Nidaros .

1 nuit juste après Lebouirat avec un départ d'Assa vers 11:00 et a l'époque il n'y avait que de la piste.
1 nuit avant Haouza.
Ce n'est pas la saison des pluies c'est simplement l'hiver, il fait très froid la nuit et beau dans la journée.

Hi there, we’ll be in Mozambique in early December 2026 and we’d like to travel from Vilanculos to Beira by car or bus to reach Beira airport. After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

For those who’ve driven on Iceland’s gravel roads in their own or a rented Duster, could you tell me what tires were fitted on the vehicle?
Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?
Follow-up question: if they were "standard" tires, did that cause any issues on the gravel roads and rough terrain?

I’m planning a trip to Iceland for next July-August, with a car and tent, and I’m wondering about booking campsites.
From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.
Here’s the planned route (in this order):

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

We’re struggling a bit with timing and choosing activities for the part of the trip between Sesriem and Brandberg.
Day 1: Sesriem to Mirabib
Day 2: Mirabib to Swakopmund – visit Swakopmund, overnight in Swakopmund
Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

However, the rental agencies we’ve found prohibit driving on the tracks to Omalo (Tusheti) and/or Ushguli (Svaneti).

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?
For the parks along the Zambezi River, is it better to visit Mana Pools on the Zimbabwe side or Lower Zambezi on the Zambia side?

A well-prepped 4x4, a travel plan across Africa in stages since I’ve got kids to see regularly and work to earn a living.
I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.
Is that too much time to spend in each place?
We’d also like to do one or two boat excursions in the delta. Any suggestions for the best options and operators?
