Very short layover at Doha Airport

Hi there

I completely forgot the transit procedure at Doha Airport and I’m a bit worried because I only have 1h30 to change planes, since my first flight was rescheduled. My flights: Barcelona/Doha: arrival at 6:15 AM Doha/Bangkok: departure at 7:50 AM

We only have carry-on luggage. Will they be checked again? Do we have to go through security again? Are the connections smooth and well signposted? Finally, is it common in this situation to ask a flight attendant for help?

Thanks! 🙂

Hi,

Everything seems to be explained clearly with the distances provided—it’ll depend on your flights and their gates. https://dohahamadairport.com/airport-guide/at-the-airport/transfers

Hi

OK, it seems pretty smooth so far, that’s good. Hopefully the Barcelona-Doha flight will be on time. Less than 1.5 hours for a layover is tight!

QR 138 and QR 146 don’t exactly seem like punctuality champions, do they?

It was Iberia that changed the schedules on the Barcelona/Doha route. The Doha/Bangkok leg is operated by Qatar Airways.

I don’t think Iberia operates flights to this destination—those are Qatar Airways planes. Anyway, double-check. QR 138 142 146

The Iberia website says it's Qatar operating the flight on a 787-9. Those long flight numbers usually mean another airline is operating the flight.

We’ve been in the same situation once, and everything went smoothly, so don’t worry too much.

You’ll always go through security again, and of course, it’ll get really tight if you want to stop by a shop to grab your favorite YSL. 🙂

Hey Bruno and Jojo

Hope it goes smoothly—I really don’t wanna miss even a single day in Bangkok 😉

Hello,

First of all, be careful—your message #7 shows your ticket numbers and PNR.

You do only have Qatar Airways flights.

If you miss your connection, there’s another flight an hour later.

And at most, there’s another one in the evening (so don’t plan anything important upon arrival in Bangkok, just in case).

No problem—it’s the advantage of the Gulf sisters having so many flights.

As for the layover in Doha, I can’t say—I haven’t been there in a while, and I’m only going back at the end of March with a 4-hour connection each way.

Thanks Erjome

I asked for my post #7 to be deleted, but hey, I’m not too paranoid 😉 In the meantime, I also saw there were other flights the same day to Bangkok.

Qatar Airways isn’t great? Tatra seemed to say they weren’t "the kings of punctuality" !

Yeah, no worries.

Isn’t Qatar Airways any good?

I haven’t flown with them in years, but I’m taking them again at the end of March, just like you, from Barcelona to Australia. They’ve been ranked the world’s best airline for the 9th year in a row 🏆. That said, you’ve got to consider the criteria and classes to really get a sense of it. But I’m not worried at all.

Either way, you’re fine given the number of flights they have between Barcelona and Bangkok. Worst case, a long wait in Doha or one night covered by them.

Good evening,

I was talking about the flights in question after checking their stats—not all QR flights.

Qatar is either appreciated or not; there’s an expression among frequent flyers to describe certain commercial shortcuts: to be qatared...

On my last flight, I chose Emirates over Qatar, but both airlines are top-tier for average travelers.

I’ve never experienced delays or issues, and the meal trays are really decent.

Honestly, don’t worry.

It’s definitely better than Iberia—unless you factor in that Doha is a dictatorship.

The airport is huge, sometimes kitschy... I don’t remember any long or difficult connections.

If the first flight is on time, it’s totally fine. 🙂

Plus, there are lots of flights to Bangkok.

Hi Agnès

I was just asking out of curiosity, nothing more. The onboard services aren’t a big deal for me. If they’re good, great, but they’re not part of my search criteria. Anyway, I’m terrified on planes I barely eat, can’t focus on a movie, can’t sleep… at the slightest unusual noise, I turn to jelly. My desire to travel is stronger than my fears, but flying is the worst part of my life—and landing is the best! !

Hi Kate,

On-board services matter to me if the price difference is reasonable.

A bit more space, a wider selection of movies, punctuality, and after-sales service in case of issues...

The food isn’t great in any case, and friendliness varies depending on the staff’s mood that day—those aren’t my criteria.

Actually, I first choose the schedule and total flight duration.

I no longer just look for the cheapest price but the best value for money, considering all these factors.

Sometimes, I end up with Corsair or EasyJet (if the schedule’s perfect, it’s a direct flight, not too long, and the price is attractive), other times with Air France, Qatar, or others.

The big comfort difference is premium economy... (then Business, but that’s a whole different price range...😄)

Try noise-canceling headphones. They’re honestly great for zoning out or enjoying a movie better. (Though they do take up space...😇)

Not all low-cost airlines are bad. We took Transavia from Montpellier to Istanbul. Great communication, smooth boarding, flights on time, the captain was in top form (he was telling us riddles!), charming flight attendants, drinks and snacks at reasonable prices… 100 € round trip! (For a very short flight, so less suffering for me 😉)

Transavia cancels its flight plans when the occupancy rate isn't good...

They're not the only low-cost airline to do this, but personally, it puts me off.

I avoid this airline as much as possible now.

Don't want to end up stranded 16 days before departure like I did for Iceland.

Hi Agnes,

Since I quite enjoy the journey more than the destination, I recently flew Warsaw–Istanbul–Tbilisi in business class on Turkish Airlines. Four business-class flights, four lounge accesses, for a total of around 540 €. I didn’t feel ripped off—if I can put it that way 😊

You’ve always got to check business-class fares. Sometimes they’re even cheaper than economy, under certain circumstances.

No matter how much I do like you and always check biz-class fares (but only on long-haul), I never find a decent price. Except for error fares, but you’ve got to be a gambler for those…

Hey,

1h30 is plenty of time in Doha. You’ll even have time to do some shopping or grab a Burger King. 😛

The big difference in terms of comfort is the Premium... (then Business, but that's a whole different price range...)

I recently tried Premium on Corsair with a bidding system (and a few years ago on Cathay): yes, it's a whole different experience without the price difference being outrageous (especially when bidding!). And above all, small cabins with just a few seats, very quiet. (Really great value compared to what Economy must be like on Corsair ).

Try the noise-canceling headphones. They're honestly great for getting in your own bubble or enjoying a movie even more.

I totally agree—it lets you completely zone out. I commute to Marseille every week, and it’s changed how I approach these regular trips. Noise-canceling headphones, a wide sleep mask, a window seat, and I finish my night 😛 And on long-haul flights, it’s bliss too—unbearable to watch movies for hours with mediocre earbuds. And for Kate, you won’t hear any background noise with these headphones—the trip is so much smoother 😉

Hi there,

Our first experience traveling with QATAR Airways was last month (Oct. 2025) on the Nice / Doha / Nairobi route, round trip in economy class. The layover time in Doha was about 2 hours each way. We had to go through security checks on arrival, but it was quick. We had to walk quite a bit, but it actually felt good. Electric cars with drivers are available (for those who have difficulty moving around). I’d been warned that Doha Airport is huge, so on the way out, we didn’t linger to admire its gallery—and we were wrong, because we ended up spending a lot of time waiting for the next flight’s boarding gate to open... We corrected that on the way back. All flights were on time, but in the end, there was an incident unrelated to Qatar. We were arriving in Nice during the storm on October 23. The crew made two landing attempts with go-arounds and eventually diverted to Rome. There, we waited 3 or 4 hours without disembarking. Then we successfully returned to Nice.

We were fully satisfied with the airline’s service throughout the journey. Two of the four flights were on Airbus A-350s, one on a Boeing B-787, and another on a Boeing B-777.

We used to travel to Kenya or Tanzania with Ethiopian, and I have to say I preferred Qatar—especially because of the layover in Addis Ababa. The airport in the Ethiopian capital is horribly noisy and loud compared to Doha’s.

Also, our round-trip flight to Nairobi with QATAR cost 200 € less than with Ethiopian (departing from Marseille).

Best regards, Safe travels and happy flights!
