Nous préparons un voyage de Windhoek aux Victoria Falls pour aout 2015 avec nos 2 grands ados, avec loc de 4X4, campings et le plus de self drive possible.
Après étude de carte et guide et surtout plusieurs heures de lecture passionnantes et instructives sur le forum, découvert avec bonheur, je peux donner une info avant d’en demander.
1° Concernant l’assurance couverte par les cartes de crédit à propos des loc de 4X4, il est très difficile d’avoir des infos précises directement à la banque (qui n’est qu’un relai des systèmes de carte) et même en contactant par exemple réseau Master card qui renâcle à répondre tant que vous n’êtes pas membre. Je passe les détails pour réussir à parler à quelqu’un de qualifié chez eux elle m’indique que la Gold de Master Card n’assure pas les 4X4, ( mais elle me répondait en ayant compris à tord que j’étais à la Banque Postal). Quand elle comprend qu’il s’agit du Crédit Agricole, alors elle lit que la Gold assure les 4X4 mais que le tout terrain est exclue. Donc la Gold n’assure pas la même chose en fonction de la banque qui la délivre ! Permet d’y voir + clair.
Ensuite, qu’est ce que tout terrain veut dire ? Là elle a de la peine à répondre et va demander à plus »haut » : le tout terrain c’est quand vous sortez des pistes par exemple vous allez dans les dunes à travers le Sahara par exemple. Déjà plus clair, mais j’envoie un courrier pour avoir une réponse écrite. Je vous tiendrai au courant. Désolé d’être un peu long.
2° concernant la loc du 4X4.( Je reviendrai +tard pour l’itinéraire mais on projette un classique :Windhoek, Sesriem, Walvi Bay, Damarand pistes numérotées et non numétotées sur African tracks, Etosha, Caprivi et ses parcs, Chobe peut être sans le 4X4 rendu à Kasane, Vic Falls, avion.)
J’ai trouvé des tarifs intéressants dans l’ordre croissants chez Desert car Hire, African 4X4 Rental et Savana.
J’ai eu des eco de Savana sur VF mais pas des 2 premiers. Quelqu’un les connait il ?

Je suis étonnée de ce qui t'a été dit concernant la Gold. Quand tu regardes la notice de la carte (et donc peu importe la Banque) les choses ont changé par rapport à il y a qqs années.

A la page 16, voilà ce qui est maintenant dit concernant les véhicules de location (avant les 4*4 étaient clairement interdits):
Véhicule de location
Tout engin terrestre à moteur à quatre roues, immatriculé, servant à transporter des personnes, loué auprès d’un professionnel habilité et d’une valeur à neuf inférieure ou égale à 50 000 €,
à l’exception des véhicules suivants:
- les voitures de collection de plus de 20 ans ou dont la production a été arrêtée depuis plus de 10 ans par le constructeur,
- les véhicules de plus de 3,5 tonnes de poids total en charge et/ou de plus de 8m3 de volume utile,
- les campings cars et caravanes,
- les quads.
Est également considéré comme Véhicule de location, le véhicule de remplacement, prêté par un garagiste,
lorsque le véhicule du Titulaire est immobilisé pour réparation, sous réserve que ce prêt fasse l’objet d’un contrat en bonne et due forme, assorti d’une facturation
Dans les dommages exclus, il y a:

Tu ne seras jamais assuré par personne sur les pistes non numérotées. Mais la probabilité d'y avoir un accident avec un autre véhicule y sont quasi inexistantes et les vitesses tellement faibles que le risque de sortie de piste tout seul ou à cause d'un animal n'existe pratiquement pas non plus.
Pour les loueurs, pas de miracle : moins c'est cher, plus les véhicules sont anciens. Sur les trois je n'ai d'expérience qu'avec Savannah : RAS.
Tu confirmes ce que j'ai reçu par écrit pour le 4X4 avec la Gold. Par contre ceux qui prendraient la Gold par la Banque Postal, faites vous bien préciser que le 4X4 n'est pas exclu, car c'est ce que mon interlocutrice m'a lue au téléphone quand elle pensait que j'étais à la banque postale.Moi aussi j'ai trouvé bizarre que les exclusions soient différentes.

African 4X4 Rental me répond avec le devis que les 4X4 sont de 2014 et 60 000KM Max.
Desert Car Hire me répond avec le devis que les 4X4 sont de 2013 et 50 à 100.000 Km.
Je n'ai pas encore la réponse de Savana mais ton avis confirme ce que j'ai déjà lu.
J' attends si d'autres voyageurs connaissent African 4X4 Rental et Desert Car Hire.

À propos, quelles pistes sans numéros comptes-tu emprunter au Damaraland ? Dès qu'on sort des pistes entretenues, on trouve beaucoup de caillasse, de sable (dans les lits de rivières), des pentes importantes...
Si tu es un conducteur de 4x4 un peu expérimenté, rien d'insurmontable en général.
Si tu n'as pas d'expérience c'est une autre histoire.
Le problème n'est pas qu'une question d'assurance. Il faut aussi qu'en cas de pépin mécanique ton loueur vienne te chercher. Surtout si tu voyages à un seul véhicule.

Hi there, we’ll be in Mozambique in early December 2026 and we’d like to travel from Vilanculos to Beira by car or bus to reach Beira airport. After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?

I’m planning a trip to Iceland for next July-August, with a car and tent, and I’m wondering about booking campsites.
From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.
Here’s the planned route (in this order):

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?

I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.
