In short, we want to go during Golden Week, see late-blooming cherry trees, and have the freedom to get around with a rental car. Here’s the plan: 18-day itinerary in Japan (April 25 → May 12) Goal: freedom, late cherry blossoms, culture & nature

Hi, Just so you know, when you take the JR from the airport to central Tokyo, the company has introduced a baggage fee of 900 yen (5.50 €) per person for foreigners. There’s a dedicated line for this, and you’re directed by a JR agent. If you take the Keisei network from Narita, there’s no fee for now. As a reminder, the JR Pass has tripled in price since October 2023. It’s not essential if you’re staying less than 3 weeks—consider the bus instead, which is much cheaper. Sure, it takes longer, but it’s budget-friendly.

Since October 1, 2024, agents have been handing out flyers to tourists at airport arrivals with recommendations about theft in hotels. Over the past few months, there’s been a rise in stolen phones, laptops, and other electronics from rooms. The advice is to lock everything in a suitcase with a key or code when you’re not around to avoid issues. Japan’s economy isn’t doing well right now, and some locals are struggling financially, blaming tourists for rising prices. Of course, the current exchange rate is great for us—165 yen to the euro lets us eat ramen for next to nothing—but inflation has hit them hard.

Day 6: Arita / Owakachiyama / rice fields in the evening: Is it better to go from Fukuoka to Arita by car or train?

Day 7: Sasebo + Kujukushima Pearl + fireworks show Day 8: Karatsu (Yobuko market + cave + cape) + Matsuri Kanchi Day 9: Kashima + garden + Tara Day 10: Higashi Sonogi, overnight in Nagasaki. Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Day 11: Nagasaki Day 12: Nagasaki, overnight in Fukuoka, so departure by train from Nagasaki Day 13: Munakata and Oshima, and in the evening, Hanabi Kama

Day 14: Mount Hiko, Toho, Soeda. Is there a pottery village? With or without hands-on experience?

I’m planning a trip to Japan from May 11 to 26 with Air China.

I’ll be taking Ouigo from Lyon for both the outbound and return trips to get to Roissy CDG.

For the outbound TGV from Lyon, I’ll arrive at Roissy with plenty of time—at least 6 or 7 hours before my 8:30 PM flight (Paris to Beijing, then Beijing to Tokyo). For the return on May 26, I was wondering what time you’d recommend booking my train to Lyon, given that I’ll land at CDG at 7:30 AM (flight from Tokyo). I was thinking of booking a train leaving at 11:00 AM from the SNCF station at CDG to Lyon Saint-Exupéry—does that seem too tight based on your experience?

This is my first time traveling this far with a layover in Beijing, and I’m not familiar with Roissy CDG Airport at all.

Avec mon fils (14 ans) nous partons pour 12 jours au Japon, arrivée le 28 octobre au petit matin et départ 9 novembre. Je loue une voiture pour une balade, dans un premier temps. J'ai prévue deux nuits autour du Mont Fuji pour pouvoir en profiter une journée complète. Nous avons ensuite 5 jours pleins. J'aimerai assister à l'embrasement des érables (le Koyo). Je m'interroge sur où aller. La préfecture de Gifu, celle de Nagano ou alors partir au nord de Tokyo vers Nikko ? Qu'en pensez-vous ? 7 jours de pleine nature, auberges et Osen, randonnées et érables en feu (si possible !) Nous passerons les 5 derniers jour à Tokyo.

Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de tout visiter? Je ne sais pas trop comment organiser mon itinéraire par rapport aux distances des villes. Mes centres d'intêrets sont la visites de temples, les toris sur la mer, les rizières , les plantations de thé, être proche des habitants, la nature...

Je cherche aussi un ryokan assez sympa mais pas hors de prix mais je ne sais pas dans quel endroit il vaut mieux le prendre.

20 avril: Départ de Nara en fin de journée pour Ise. 2 nuits / 1,5 jour sur place

22 avril: Départ vers midi de Ise pour Nara puis pour Koya-San. 2 nuits / 1 jour sur place.

24 avril: Départ le matin pour Tanabe, puis Hongu: Kumano Kodo. 2 nuits / 1,5 jour sur place.

26 avril: Départ le matin de Hongu pour Osaka. Visite de la ville. 1 nuit (départ le 27 au matin).

Nous savons que pour beaucoup Tokyo est l'endroit à ne pas manquer, mais actuellement ce qui nous intéresse ce sont les temples, la nature, les villages, etc. C'est donc un choix conscient que nous avons fait pour ce premier voyage de ne pas aller jusque là-bas...

Première question, 4 nuits Tokyo et 2 nuits Kyoto—Osaka ou 3 nuits dans chacune des villes ? Deuxième question choisir l hôtel à Kyoto ou à Osaka ?. Nous revenons juste de 11 jours de vacances au Japon et y retournons en Décembre-Janvier pour pourvoir y skier. Habitant pour le moment en Corée nous pouvons nous permettre de visiter par petits et cours séjour le Japon.

Nous y serons du 26 Decembre au 5 Janvier inclus. Arrivée à Tokyo Hanenda et depart idem.

Je cherche des conseils sur des endroit agréables pour skier quelques jours et aussi pour explorer un peu le Japon en hiver. J'avais noté Nagano à cause de la proximité des Snow Monkeys.

Transport: que nous conseillez vous train ou location de voiture? Nous serons 3.

J'avais pensé a la location de voiture mais les prix des tollways sont un peu effrayants. Y a-t-il un system de pass comme pour les trains ?

Bonjour, voici un petit compte-rendu de mon voyage au Japon en compagnie de mes 3 enfants (20, 18 et 14 ans). Voyage avec KLM au départ de Bruxelles, via Amsterdam. Arrivée à Osaka le 25 au matin, sous le soleil, récupération de nos bagages, on met dans le sac à dos ce qu'il nous faut pour 2 nuits et on fait envoyer nos bagages à Kyoto pour dans 2 jours via compagnie JAL, on se dirige vers la gare toute proche et on fait activer notre JR pass pour le lendemain, train vers Osaka, on monte au sommet de Abeno Harukas, déjeuner et ensuite balade quartier Shinsekai. Installation à l'hôtel, petite sieste puis diner quartier Dotonbori. J'aurais bien voulu monter au dessus de l'Umeda sky building en soirée mais les enfants étaient "morts". 26 : départ vers Hiroshima. Visite du parc de la paix. Devant le monument des enfants, un groupe d'écoliers en train de chanter, assez émouvant ! Visite du mémorial ainsi que du musée : très bien fait. C'est préférable de comprendre l'anglais pour lire tous les panneaux explicatifs. Ensuite départ vers Miyajima. Là nous avions loué un ryokan rien que pour nous 4 ! Très très bien. On pose nos sacs à dos puis balade au mont Misen. Montée par l'est, descende par l'ouest, très bel endroit. Miyajima le soir et le matin, c'est vraiment calme ! ça vaut la peine d'y passer la nuit. 27 : visite du sanctuaire d'Itsukushima, du temple Daisho-in et du sanctuaire Senjokaku, on reprend le bateau fin de matinée. Après midi visite château d'Himeji. Magnifique château en bois récemment rénové, pas de trop de monde en plus. Soir, arrivée à Kyoto .

My husband and I have always loved traveling, and at 75, we have no intention of stopping... But I find that everything’s getting so complicated. I try to be "modern" by booking online, but as soon as there’s a problem, we hit a wall.

A friend nearly missed her departure last year because of a visa issue that wasn’t explained properly on a website... and no one to call for help, just automated messages.

It makes me a little nervous to be alone in front of a screen so far away, especially since at our age, we like knowing there’s real support if our health takes a turn while we’re there.

Anyway, I’m tired of seeing my file passed from one person to another without ever having the same contact... Do you know of any small, trustworthy agencies or people who still work the "old-fashioned" way and really look after their clients? I love my independence, but I need a real face behind my project.

I’m currently in Vietnam, and my plan is to travel to Shanghai and then take a ferry to Osaka. I can’t find any clear info online about whether this is still possible. Most links mention a weekly departure, but when I check the company’s website, it says passenger transport is suspended.

If any of you have more recent info, I’d really appreciate it!

I’ve tried to balance things so we can see as much as possible while still giving them time to enjoy the evenings. Here’s what I’ve come up with: - Arrival in Tokyo on May 17 - Staying in Tokyo from May 17 to 22, exploring the city, with a day trip to Nikko (round trip in one day): is it worth it, considering it’s a 2-hour train ride each way? - Sending our big suitcases directly to Osaka - Traveling to Kamakura on May 23: 1 night (with small luggage) - Traveling to Hakone on May 24: 1 night (with small luggage) - Heading to Osaka on May 25: staying from May 25 to June 2 in Osaka, where we’ll pick up our big suitcases Day trips from Osaka: - Kyoto: 2 days (round trip in one day) - Nara: 1 day (round trip in one day) My son would prefer to stay in Osaka for all 8 days, but I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to spend at least one night in Kyoto. I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴‍☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.

So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.

For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto

What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

Hello everyone, what a pleasure to be back on this forum!

My partner and I are heading to Japan for the first time from mid-December to mid-January for 31 days. It’s a long-held dream we’ve been saving for over two years, and we want to enjoy ourselves while also being mindful of our budget for parts of the trip. We’d love to explore Tokyo, but we’ve chosen to spend more time in nature. My partner plans to get his driver’s license translated locally so we can rent a car. We’ve heard from friends who’ve been that Japan isn’t the best place for improvisation, so we’ve tried to allow plenty of time in each location to avoid rushing. Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary we’ve planned—whether it’s feasible in terms of travel and how interesting it seems. Given the recent increase in the JR Pass price and the fact that we’ll spend about ten days on Goto, Ojika, and Yakushima (where the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel), we don’t think it’s worth it for us. Instead, we’re planning to take the train from Tokyo to Fukuoka and then use buses and ferries for the rest of Kyushu. Here’s our itinerary:

1- December 13 / Arrival in Tokyo, one night in Tokyo, then departure for Fukuoka by train on the morning of the 14th.

2 - December 14-16 / 2 nights in Fukuoka, sightseeing, then departure on the evening/night of the 16th by ferry to Ojika Islands.

3 - December 17-21 / 4 nights on Ojika, cycling and exploring, then departure on the 21st by ferry to Fukue on the Goto Islands.

4 - December 21-24 / 3 nights on the Goto Islands, renting a car to explore, maybe a trip to Hisaka. Departure for Nagasaki by ferry on the morning of the 24th.

5- December 24-26 / 2 nights in Nagasaki, visiting the city and memorials, possibly the hot springs in Unzen. Departure on the evening of the 26th by bus or ferry (?) to Kumamoto.

6- December 26-29 / 3 nights in Kumamoto, sightseeing, day trip by car to Mount Aso and surrounding areas. Departure on the 29th in the late afternoon by bus to Kagoshima, overnight in Kagoshima.

7- December 30 to January 2 / Morning departure by ferry to Yakushima for 3 nights, hiking and exploring the island. Departure on January 2 on the only ferry (?) in the early afternoon back to Kagoshima.

8- January 2 to 5 / Uncertain leg... We’d like to spend the night of the 4th to the 5th at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen and then head back to Fukuoka and Tokyo by train on the 5th. From the 2nd to the 4th, since we’ll arrive in Kagoshima in the late afternoon, we thought we could head back up to Kumamoto by train or bus—going to Yufuin or Beppu would take much longer and leave us with very little time. But is it worth staying another 2 nights in Kumamoto to explore the area, given we’ll already be there for 3 days from December 26-29? Or should we stay in Kagoshima and head up to Kurokawa Onsen on the afternoon of the 4th for our overnight stay?

9- January 5 to 13, Tokyo and its endless things to do and see, then back to France!

Logiquement, nous avons prévu de partir avec ma femme au Japon mi Mai 2021 (On verra si cela est possible étant donné le contexte actuel). J'essaye tant bien que mal de préparer un itinéraire sympathique mais cela s'avère beaucoup plus complexe que prévu étant donné le nombre de choses incroyables que ce pays propose. Sachant que nous sommes intéressés par pratiquement tout (ville, nature, gastronomie...) et surtout on aime mixer et varier les journées.

Honnêtement, les choix a réaliser sont compliqués. Etant donné que ça sera notre premier voyage au Japon, nous souhaitons faire les incontournables bien entendu (mais je sens bien qu'il va falloir choisir les incontournables des incontournables 😉 )

Du coup, je suis intéressé par vos avis et conseils concernant une première ébauche que j'ai prévu.

Du coup, j'ai quelques questions : _Que pensez vous de l'itinéraire ? Des choses à modifier ou optimiser ? Je me pose la question pour Osaka notamment (3 soirs) et Kyoto sur 4 jours complets ou j'ai un peu peur d'une "lassitude" concernant les temples même si ils ont l'air magnifique (sachant que ces 4j sont à Kyoto même).

_Il nous semble possible d'ajouter une journée dans le circuit mais je ne sais pas ou cela serait le plus judicieux (Tokyo, Nikko, Nara, Uji, Himeji, Kyoto, Miyajima ou autres)

On est une famille avec 2 enfants 12 et 10 ans . Nous prévoyons dans un futur sans virus, un voyage au Japon, on hésitait entre 15 jours au printemps ou 3 semaines en ete mais les JO étant reporte, je crois que le printemps sera bien. On est des fans de jeux video, manga, nature , animaux et monsieur reve de tester le wagyu ou autre sushi. Les enfants veulent aussi absolument faire le nouveau parc universal studio avec le parc Nintendo.

Bonjour à tous Je débute mes recherches pour préparer un voyage au Japon en 2021 ( avril ou octobre pendant les vacances scolaires zone C avec certainement 11 à 12 nuits sur place) Nous sommes un couple avec un ado de 17 ans. Les témoignages me donnent envie de tout visiter...mais il faut faire un choix...c'est là que vous intervenez 😄!

Itinéraire 1: arrivée à Tokyo, départ d'Osaka J-1 et 2: Tokyo pour le côté branché + 1 parc plutôt que visites de temples. J3 et 4 Hiroshima et miyajima J 5-6: shimanami kaido ( j'ai 2 triathletes a la maison!. Idéalement imabari-onomichi avec nuit sur une des îles) J7-8-9-10: Kyoto ( avec journée a Nara et Universal studio d'Osaka) J11 nuit près aéroport de Kansai car départ tôt pour la France Sur cet itinéraire JR pass 7 jours? Avis logement et répartition des nuits... Ça me paraît un marathon, non?

Itinéraire 2: je zappe Tokyo ( pour mieux y revenir une autre fois?). Vol AR osaka J1-2-3: Kyoto J4-5: Hiroshima et miyajima J6-8: shimanami kaido ( ferry Hiroshima- Matsuyama puis train jusqu'à ibamari). Nuit sur une des îles. J9-10-11: osaka ( +Universal studio, Nara si non fait en début de séjour?) Sur cet itinéraire JR pass setouchi?

Autre question : mon mari et mon fils loueront certainement un vélo de route...et moi un vélo électrique...j'ai malheureusement vu qu'il faudrait le rendre au même endroit où passer par le service de retour Wakka....qui peut m'expliquer ?

Nous partons ...en principe 🙂..dans une dizaine de jours au Japon et notre séjour prévoit 4 jours à Kyoto. Nous souhaiterions profiter d'une journée pour aller à Hirohsima Cela vous parait il judicieux ? L'aller retour en une journée est il suffisant pour " voir" ..Je ne dis pas visiter..ce haut lieu tragique de notre histoire.. Ou est-ce vraiment trop court , et vaut il mieux consacrer entièrement ces 4 jours à Kyoto ?( qui avec les arrivées départ ne seront surement pas 4 jours pleins !) je vous remercie de votre point de vue qui nous aidera à organiser notre séjour dans les meilleures conditions.
