So great to be back on this forum😉
I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too.
We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now.
We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book).
Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.
So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products...
Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect.
Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka).
We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.
For example:
5 days in Tokyo
2 days in Hakone
4 days in Osaka/Kyoto
What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

J'ai trouvé un appart-hotel dans le quartier d'asakusa. Les commentaires sont très positifs, il offre l'avantage d'avoir du personnel dans les lieux en cas de problème mais offre également une plus grande liberté (pas d'obligation d'aller manger au resto tous les jours) avec sa cuisine et une machine à laver, supermarché à proximité. Bref, ma question est la suivante: l'hotel se situe à 500 mètres d'une station de métro mais pas à proximité d'une gare. Est-ce vraiment gênant sachant que j'ai prévu de visiter Tokyo mais également ses alentours?
Je n'ai pas encore d'itinéraire précis en tête mais je sais déjà que je passerai la moitié de mon voyage à visiter Tokyo et alentours avant de me rendre à Kyoto pour visiter la ville et également les alentours. Et je souhaite déjà réserver mes pieds-à-terre dans ces deux villes pour plus de sécurité.

Pour mon 3ème séjour au Japon en mai prochain, j'ai besoin de conseils pour trouver un quartier sympa, facile d'accès, central, animé (mais pas la cohue) pour séjourner quelques jours.
N'étant allée qu'à Kyushu et au Kansai, je ne connais pas du tout Tokyo et compte sur vous pour m'aiguiller.

Nous allons passer quatre jours à Tokyo en avril prochain, et j'hésite entre deux hôtels, situés dans les quartiers de Ginza pour l'un et Shinjuku pour l'autre.
Pourriez-vous me dire quel serait le meilleur moyen de rejoindre l'aéroport international d'Haneda, pour le retour en France.. J 'avoue que je galère un peu pour m' y retrouver entre trains, métro, bus express.. Je sais que nous ne prendrons pas de taxi, trop onéreux.

Avec ma copine (23 ans et 24 ans) nous partons au Japon pour la première fois du 20 Octobre au 6 Novembre prochain. Notre itinéraire est le suivant :
6 nuits Tokyo 1 nuit Hakone (ryokan déjà réservé) 4 nuits Kyoto (hôtel déjà réservé) 2 nuits Osaka 4 nuits Tokyo Je souhaite réserver l’hôtel pour Tokyo (enfin les deux hôtels) et Osaka, mais j’ai beaucoup de recommandations différentes. J’ai lu que Shinjuku était là où il y avait le grand hub / accessibilité / choses à faire, mais on m’a aussi parlé de Shibuya, Asakusa, Ueno. J’ai regardé les hôtels et premièrement je suis étonné du prix par rapport à ce que j’ai lu sur les forums (l’inflation est passé par là aussi j’imagine…, et peut-être que je suis en retard sur les réservations ?), et je me perds un peu dans les recherches avec toutes les propositions.
Pour le premier logement à Tokyo je souhaiterai être en hôtel (pas résidence ou AirBnB) car nous arriverons pendant la nuit et c’est notre première fois au Japon donc si on peut arriver dans un endroit avec un accueil, des gens qui parlent (même un minimum) anglais et qui nous guident, ce serait top. Pour le second logement on pourra faire autrement si c’est mieux. Niveau budget nous pouvons nous permettre de mettre 150e-180e par nuit mais si on peut faire des économies pour mettre les sous ailleurs ce serait vraiment vraiment pas de refus!
Je suis preneur de toutes les recommandations, suggestions d’hôtels, ou autre, pour Tokyo 1, Osaka, et Tokyo 2.

We (two couples of friends) will be spending 6 full days there in early November. Here’s what we’ve planned so far. Start with Takeshita-dori (kawaii fashion, Japanese crepes). Walk up to Omotesandō (designer architecture: Dior, Prada).

Je me prénomme Mathias 28 ans, j'aime tout ce qui touche à l’Asie (du moins la Corée, Chine, Japon), plus particulièrement au Japon à cause (grâce) aux Animes et Mangas.
Cela fait quelques années que je me tâte à vouloir aller au japon, mais c'est seulement maintenant que je me décide vraiment à partir.
Cela sera mon 1er voyage.

Arrivée à Osaka le 25 au matin, sous le soleil, récupération de nos bagages, on met dans le sac à dos ce qu'il nous faut pour 2 nuits et on fait envoyer nos bagages à Kyoto pour dans 2 jours via compagnie JAL, on se dirige vers la gare toute proche et on fait activer notre JR pass pour le lendemain, train vers Osaka, on monte au sommet de Abeno Harukas, déjeuner et ensuite balade quartier Shinsekai. Installation à l'hôtel, petite sieste puis diner quartier Dotonbori. J'aurais bien voulu monter au dessus de l'Umeda sky building en soirée mais les enfants étaient "morts".
26 : départ vers Hiroshima. Visite du parc de la paix. Devant le monument des enfants, un groupe d'écoliers en train de chanter, assez émouvant ! Visite du mémorial ainsi que du musée : très bien fait. C'est préférable de comprendre l'anglais pour lire tous les panneaux explicatifs. Ensuite départ vers Miyajima. Là nous avions loué un ryokan rien que pour nous 4 ! Très très bien. On pose nos sacs à dos puis balade au mont Misen. Montée par l'est, descende par l'ouest, très bel endroit. Miyajima le soir et le matin, c'est vraiment calme ! ça vaut la peine d'y passer la nuit.
27 : visite du sanctuaire d'Itsukushima, du temple Daisho-in et du sanctuaire Senjokaku, on reprend le bateau fin de matinée. Après midi visite château d'Himeji. Magnifique château en bois récemment rénové, pas de trop de monde en plus. Soir, arrivée à Kyoto .

en recherchant déjà sur booking, nous avons trouvé une petite villa de 80 m² très proche de la gare de Shibuya avec deux chambres, sdb, salon, cuisine, ect... le propriétaire nous en demande 100 € / nuit, pensez vous que ce soit une bonne affaire, ou est ce que nous pouvons encore attendre un peu, pour peut être trouver une meilleur affaire !

Après plusieurs jours en Corée du Sud, j'ai pris la décision de partir 3 jours complet à Tokyo sachant que c'est pas loin.
Je voulais savoir si pour les quartiers comme Sinjuku ou Shibuya on pouvait les faire en une demi-journée ou plus la journée ? Car je souhaite faire les deux quartiers ainsi que Asakusa, Akihabara et Odaiba, est-ce jouable ?
Je compte me loger non loin de Sinjuku Station.

On est une famille avec 2 enfants 12 et 10 ans . Nous prévoyons dans un futur sans virus, un voyage au Japon, on hésitait entre 15 jours au printemps ou 3 semaines en ete mais les JO étant reporte, je crois que le printemps sera bien. On est des fans de jeux video, manga, nature , animaux et monsieur reve de tester le wagyu ou autre sushi. Les enfants veulent aussi absolument faire le nouveau parc universal studio avec le parc Nintendo.
Je vous propose une ebauche de planning assez classique mais J ai du mal a evaluer le temps des visites donc je sais pas ce qui est faisable. Je ne me suis pas encore renseigner sur les transports a part le JR pass de tokyo a kyoto mais pour hakone-fujiyoshida- kyoto Y a t il un autre moyen ou faut repasser par Tokyo ?

For a 15-day trip next spring, I’d like to buy a card (preferably an eSIM, but a physical SIM is fine too) that also lets me make calls in the country (to contact a hotel, a tourist spot, etc.).
You can easily find options just for data, but I haven’t come across any that include calls, texts, or even MMS. Could you recommend something?

Je pars en famille (2 enfants de 7 et 11 ans) au Japon à l'été 2020. Les billets d'avions sont pris et je commence à regarder l'itinéraire (pour répartir les couts d'hotel)
J'ai prévu l'itinéraire ci dessous et je me pose quelques questions.
Est ce que Osaka vaut le coup et autant de temps ?
Est ce qu'il vaut mieux bouger d'hotel en hotel ou plutot rayonner depuis une place (Osaka / Kyoto ?) et bouger en train. Dans ce cas, plutot Kyoto ou Osaka ou un bon plan ;-) ?
Certains guides proposent Kurashiki et Kobe, ca vaut aussi une pause ?
On prévoit 18 jours sur place. Pour Tokyo on aura 1 jour aux JOs donc pas de visite.

This coming October or November, we’re planning our first trip to Japan. The only downside is we’ll only have two weeks off.
For this first visit, I’m thinking of sticking to the Kyoto and Osaka area… saving Tokyo for another trip. Do you think that’s a good choice for a first-time visit?
I’ve put together a little itinerary below to get some feedback from those in the know. I’m only counting the days we’re actually there, not travel days.
Day 1: Kyoto Ginkaku-ji – Philosopher’s Path with stops at a few shrines temples Eikan-dō and Nanzen-ji visit to the Samurai Ninja Museum in the late afternoon
Day 2: Kyoto Fushimi Inari (allow 4 hours for the hike through the park) visit to Sanjūsangen-dō temple Shōseien garden participate in a tea ceremony
Day 3: Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera temple stroll through the historic district up to Kennin-ji temple visit Kennin-ji temple Yasaka-jinja shrine and Gion district in the late afternoon return to the hotel via Pontochō Street
Day 4: Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji and Nijō Castle visit the Imperial Palace gardens end the day in the shopping streets (Shibkyogoku and Teramachi, among others)
Day 5: Kyoto Arashiyama area Togetsukyo Bridge, walk along the river, visit the Bamboo Forest explore the area up to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji temple
Day 6: Kyoto hike from Kibune to Kurama
Day 7: Kyoto day trip to Nara (full day)
Day 8: stroll around Kyoto before heading to Osaka
Day 9: Osaka Katsuo-ji temple, then head to Minoh Falls and hike back via the Minoh Trail end the day in the Osaka Castle area
Day 10: Osaka Himeji Castle and an afternoon in Osaka
Day 11: Osaka Osaka and return to the airport in the late afternoon for the flight home
Do you think this itinerary is doable? Are some days too relaxed or too packed? I was thinking of adding a trip to Lake Biwa and Uji, but in that case, I’d have to cut some things. Are those places worth dropping some of the planned spots? And if so, which ones would you recommend cutting or shortening?

And after that? I’d like to return to Hakone to try and catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (I didn’t see it last time—it was cloudy). I’m thinking of staying one night there, probably in Odawara.
And then? I’ll head back to Tokyo and take the train to explore the surrounding areas and spend the day at some sites?
While in Tokyo, I want to visit Yokohama. I went to Kamakura last time and really loved it, but I don’t think I’ll go back.
I’ll end my trip in Tokyo, with my second-to-last night at the Muji Hotel and my last night near the airport.
That’s the plan so far—I’m open to your suggestions and itinerary tips!

These cities aren’t in the guidebooks much, but they’re absolutely worth a detour—just 180 km from Osaka and perfect for a stop on your way back from the south or heading down from Osaka. I’ve been here for five days, and the autumn colors are simply stunning: bright reds, vibrant yellows, deep maroons, and lush greens against a crystal-blue sky. Fall here is magical. Plus, the canal in central Okayama (Nishigawa) is all lit up. Hardly any Western tourists stop here, but there are plenty of Japanese visitors.

Over the past few months, I’ve been noticing more and more reports about safety issues in Tokyo and Osaka targeting tourists. I knew the local population didn’t want tourists—or at least a lot fewer—under the previous prime minister’s policies. Right now, some friends are in Tokyo—four guys traveling together—and this is what happened to them: a Japanese guy approached them in Akihabara with a map, pretending to ask for directions. Then, eight others came from behind, beat them up, stole their phones, and 30,000 yen. They ran off, and all this happened around 6:00 PM.
They went to the *koban* (police station), but the police just laughed at them. Luckily, two of the phones had trackers, which they mentioned to the police, but the cops didn’t do anything. So, they called the French embassy. The next day, they had a meeting with an embassy delegate at the police station, but nothing happened for 24 hours. Then, two days later, they were summoned back to the police station, and to their shock, the police offered them a deal: they’d get their phones and the 30,000 yen back if they withdrew their complaint. In the end, they got their phones back (one with a cracked screen) and the 30,000 yen without withdrawing their complaint.
Before leaving their hotel for Osaka, they received a letter saying they could be banned from the country for three years. When they arrived in Osaka, their ATM withdrawals with their card were limited to 20,000 yen. They asked the Japanese postal agent why, and the response was, "You’re flagged in the deportable travelers registry." Their hotel canceled their reservation, and the embassy is now taking over by involving the justice system. (more below)

Nous partons ...en principe 🙂..dans une dizaine de jours au Japon et notre séjour prévoit 4 jours à Kyoto. Nous souhaiterions profiter d'une journée pour aller à Hirohsima Cela vous parait il judicieux ? L'aller retour en une journée est il suffisant pour " voir" ..Je ne dis pas visiter..ce haut lieu tragique de notre histoire.. Ou est-ce vraiment trop court , et vaut il mieux consacrer entièrement ces 4 jours à Kyoto ?( qui avec les arrivées départ ne seront surement pas 4 jours pleins !) je vous remercie de votre point de vue qui nous aidera à organiser notre séjour dans les meilleures conditions.
