As mentioned in a previous post, we're heading to Morocco in April for 9 days instead of the originally planned 7.
Here's the itinerary I've mapped out to ideally have a complete trip, but I think it might be too ambitious. What do you think?

What do you think of this plan? Will it feel too rushed, or is it manageable?
Since we don’t know the places, it’s hard to tell if we’ll want to stop everywhere along the way or if there’s enough time to spend at each spot.
I’ve included some night-stop assumptions (1 or 2 nights).
We’d love to hear your thoughts!
We’re traveling with my wife, a 13-year-old teen, and a 10-year-old.
We’ll have our own rental car.

Hi everyone, just back from the 8-day Marrakech-Merzouga loop by car, and I’d love to share my feedback in case it helps some of you. Big thanks to all the forum members who kindly answered my questions!
Trip from Friday the 20th to Saturday the 28th, flying out of Marseille with Ryanair
- Landed late around 8 PM local time, exchanged some currency, and the rental agency (Magdaz Car, which I highly recommend) delivered the car straight to the airport with some great route tips (don’t blindly trust Maps.me). The night drive was a bit intense—lots of people out and about due to Ramadan. Stayed at Riad Midhou (really nice) on the outskirts of the city, which made it easy to hit the road the next morning.
- Day 1: Marrakech to Skoura. The drive was smooth, roads are great, but watch out for roundabout priority—it’s different from France. Beautiful route. Quick stop in Ouarzazate for lunch, Ait Benhaddou for the view (stunning), and the Fint Oasis (meh...). Spent the night at Taloute Ecolodge in Skoura, overlooking the palm grove (super cozy).
- Day 2: Skoura to Todgha Gorges via the Valley of Roses and Dades Gorges. Adventure-packed day! We crossed the Valley of Roses (pretty, but not as amazing as I’d hoped) and took a "shortcut" recommended by the *Routard* guide to reach the Dades Gorges without backtracking. After asking locals, they said, "It’s doable." Turns out it was a narrow, rocky cliffside track—no way to turn around! A stressful moment, with a nice scratch on the bumper and a good sweat. Fine in an SUV or 4x4, but not in a Logan... Then the Dades Gorges (nice) and a detour through the north to reach Todgha from above. Gorgeous mountain road and a quick stop on some snow patches—touching African snow! Spent the night at *Les Gorges de Todgha*—great place, except for the bathroom. The Todgha Gorges themselves are stunning!
Day 3: Todgha to Merzouga. Beautiful drive, and the view of the erg (sand dunes) on arrival is breathtaking! Totally worth the trip. Explored the desert and stayed at *Café du Sud* hotel just outside Merzouga—absolutely gorgeous.
Day 4: Merzouga. Desert exploration and chilling by the hotel pool (with a bonus sunburn). Lunch in Merzouga—I recommend *Dakar*—their lemon tajine was amazing. Spent the night in the hotel’s luxury camp, including a camel ride. The camp was beautiful, but I was disappointed we weren’t deeper in the desert given the price (100 € per person, including dinner, breakfast, and camel ride).
Day 5: Merzouga to Tamnougalt. Gorgeous route. First fine (a supposed stop sign...) but the officer was super nice—only 150 MAD. Stayed at *Kasbah Maktob*, right in the middle of ruins—really unique and beautiful!
Day 6: Tamnougalt to Marrakech. Another beautiful drive, and a second fine (minor speeding), same amount. Crossed a windy mountain pass during a big storm—traffic was blocked in the opposite direction (not sure why), causing massive jams for those coming from Marrakech. A few downed cables, but nothing serious. Arriving in Marrakech was tricky—hard to find the rental agency, and the traffic was intense (watch out for GPS trying to send you through the medina). Ask the rental company to meet you somewhere quiet. They didn’t even notice the damaged bumper... Stayed at *Riad Zifamo* in the heart of the medina. Big change of pace—so many people and so much hustle!
Day 7: Marrakech. Lots of wandering through the souk and a quick trip to Gueliz (not essential). A few tips for the medina: watch out for scooters weaving too fast, always negotiate prices (aim for at least 1/3 off what they ask, unless it’s a small amount), don’t buy spices—more expensive than in France! Head to the *Carrefour Market* in Gueliz for better prices. In the end, not many truly unique items—you’ll find more or less the same things everywhere.
Day 8: Early morning flight. We’d booked a car to the airport from the riad, but a taxi would’ve been fine—plenty available even at 7 AM. Security wasn’t an issue (we had lighters and liquids over 100 ml).
A few extra notes: Pleasantly surprised by the road quality—just a few potholes here and there, but overall very drivable. Watch out for the police—they’re everywhere! The car cost me 30 € per day (with the *Routard* discount) and about 90 € in gas. No safety concerns, no harassment, and no stomach issues, despite the ice in Marrakech. Breakfasts at the hotels were usually hearty—take advantage! The timing (end of February) was perfect—pleasant daytime temps and cool nights. Since it was Ramadan, nothing unusual to report, except it was hard to find food outside Marrakech at lunchtime. If I did it again, Merzouga is a must, but I’d spend a night in a real desert bivouac, deeper in the dunes. My stops (no more than 300 km a day) were well-paced, and with so few cars on the road, it wasn’t tiring—even though I’m not usually a fan of driving... Happy to answer any questions!

J'organise un road trip avec mes deux filles (13 et 16) au Maroc cet été (2019).
J'ai loué une fiat panda, toutes les logan de Marrakesh sont apparement deja prises, je n'ai pu avoir que ça (je m'y prends trop tard), j'espère que ca ira quand meme...
Voici grosso-modo notre itinéraire, et nous avons 13 jours pour aller de Marrakesh à Essouira en passant par :
-Marrakesh ( 0 nuit, on part direct de l'aeroport vers 18h) -Ouzoud (1 nuit) voir la cascade le matin, et partir - Ait Bouguemez ( 2 nuits) (une ballade dans la vallee, peut etre une nuit en bivouac ?) -1 étape ? -Imilchil (2 nuits) (il parait que c'est très beau) - Errachida ( 1nuit) -Merzouga (1 ou 2 nuits) (mes filles veulent passer une nuit sur les dunes, bon...) - Gorges du Dades (1 ou 2 nuits) (pareil, une petite ballade, se poser un peu) - Ait Benadou (1 nuit) 1 étape ? - Essaouira (on y retrouve des gens)
Voilà, l'itinéraire est encore flottant, et j'aimerais des conseils sur les étapes, les distances, savoir ce qui est faisable, s'il y a des choses à voir, des endroits ou s'arrêter, bref, je suis preneur de tous les tuyaux !!!

February 13th: Arrival in Marrakech at 3 PM. Settle in and explore the city. Night in Marrakech.
February 14th: Full day and evening in Marrakech.
February 15th: Drive via Teoulet to Aït Ben Haddou (~3.5 hours), visit the site. In the mid-afternoon, drive (~45 minutes) to Ouarzazate. Spend the rest of the day and night in Ouarzazate.
February 16th: Morning in Ouarzazate, then drive (~3 hours) to Foum Zguid. Night in Foum Zguid.
February 17th: Early departure (~2-hour drive) from Foum Zguid to Erg Chegaga with a guide. Desert experience and bivouac. Night in Erg Chegaga.
February 18th: Sunrise at Erg Chegaga, return to Foum Zguid where the car will be parked. Drive to an intermediate stop. We’re not sure what to do at this point—any recommendations? Is there a better option than heading back to Ouarzazate? Night at this intermediate stop.
February 19th: Return to Marrakech, sightseeing, and night near Marrakech airport.
February 20th: Early transfer for a 7 AM flight.
Questions:
Do these travel times seem realistic? Any suggestions for a smoother trip or interesting stops without adding days? Is Foum Zguid a good choice for visiting the desert? What temperatures should we expect in the desert, especially at night? We’d really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

Nous venons vers vous afin que vous nous apportiez votre aide afin de planifier au mieux notre séjour du 22 mars au 04 avril 2020 à Agadir pour une première expérience au Maroc. Nous devions séjourner à Marrakech mais lors de la prise de nos billets d'avion la tarification était beaucoup plus avantageuse pour une arrivée à Agadir. Nous sommes un peu perdus, nous devons recommencer nos recherches et faire nos réservations pour l'hôtel, les paysages ont l'air différents, sûrement très jolis mais d'après les forums il semblerait que ce ne soit pas la meilleur destination que nous avons choisi, peut être à tord pour certaines personnes, la période semble correcte, c'est pourquoi, il est bon de se faire ses propres opinions . Quels sont vos conseils pour les visites, les hébergements (tarifs 35/40 par nuit €, est-ce suffisant ?) combien de jours est nécessaire pour visiter Agadir, que faire aux alentours, devons nous nous contenter de rester au plus près pour profiter, ou louer une voiture. Est-il possible de passer au moins 1 nuit dans le désert car les distances ont l'air difficile à calculer ce que nous avions vu au départ de Marrakech (Telouet/Ait Ben Addou/Skoura/gorges du Dades/Erfoud/Merzouga route retour par N'Kob ect… Faut-il prévoir de faire environ 3 h de route par jour avec nuits sur place, quel serait votre road trip au départ de Agadir …. Quand nous avons la chance et selon le pays, nous louons une voiture pour plus d'autonomie. Nos questions sont les suivantes. Nous partons le 12 janvier 2020 pour un mois.
1) Comment sont les routes et conditions routières pour cette période de temps?
2) Nous recommandez-vous de louer une auto? Est-ce sécuritaire?
3) Est-il préférable d'utiliser les transport en commun (taxi, bus, train)?
4) Est-ce compliqué de se retrouver dans le réseau de transport public?

Je cherchais des informations sur l'itinéraire cyclable entre Skoura et Demnate. Nous serons là dans environ un mois et nous voyagerons avec des bagages. Par exemple, j'ai vu sur la carte qu'il y a une route pour prendre la route 307 jusqu'à Ghassate directement depuis Skoura, sans revenir à Ouarzazate. Quelqu'un le sait?

Véhicule 4x2 style kangoo/Partner/Logan etc et voyage mi mai 2020 - Concernant la R307, quel est l'état (sous réserve bien sur de toutes modifications liées à l'hiver futur) grosso modo et combien de temps faudrait-l raisonnablement en conduite tranquille pour faire Demnate/Ourzazate ? - Concernant Tabant/Bin en Ouidane j'envisage de prendre le raccourci en terre qui part de Tabant, Aghbalou, et rejoint la R302 au point 31.759963, -6.317450 (a mi chemin entre Aït Mahmed et Zaouiat Ahansal), puis Zaouiat, Tifouina, la Cathédrale et Bin el ouidane: Ce tronçon en terre est-l praticable en véhicule non 4x4 ? le reste de la R302 est-il goudronné ? I'm planning to go to the Marrakech area in mid-February 2026 and I'd like to spend a few days in the Ouarzazate region, taking the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. I've heard that in winter this road can sometimes be closed due to snow.
Is it closed for long periods?
Where can I find information about the road conditions?
I tried downloading the MaRoute app on my smartphone, which was recommended by Dan49ch, but it's no longer available. Has it been replaced by another app?

I’m doing a road trip by car this May. I’m starting from Casablanca and have two nights booked in Marrakech, then two nights right after in Ouarzazate. I’d like to head to the Merzouga desert in two days. Which route should I take, and from which city should I start? Also, I need to go to Essaouira afterward. Thanks for your help!

Je suis un peu à la dernière minute... Je serai au Maroc (Casablanca) au début mars pour 9 jours avec mon ado de 16 ans. C'est un retour au Maroc après 12 ans, donc nous avons déjà fait le circuit des cités impériales.
Nous allons louer une voiture, suggestion location grandes marques internationales ou locales?
Je pensais partir dès notre arrivée vers Essaouira, puis vers Marrakech, ensuite Merzouga et retourner vers Casablanca. Bien entendu, nous allons faire des arrêts dans quelques villes entre ces grands points d'intérêts. Vos suggestions sont les bienvenues.
Est-ce trop de distance à parcourir en peu de temps? Mon fils veut absolument passer une nuit dans le désert, des alternatives à Merzouga?
Comme je n'ai rien d'arrêté encore, je suis très ouvert à vos suggestions d'itinéraire et/ou d'activités et/ou de logements.

C'est peut-être un peu court mais pensez-vous qu'il soit possible d'aller durant le séjour jusqu'aux dunes de Merzouga ? Si oui, quels sont les points forts à ne pas louper sur le trajet ?

2) Y'a-t-il des points de chute préférentiels à privilégier sur les trajets aller et retour vers et depuis Merzouga ?
3) A Merzouga, plutôt nuit à l'auberge ou en bivouac ? (j'ai cru voir qu'il y avait maintenant des restrictions sur les bivouacs qui ne seraient plus au milieu des dunes mais au pied des dunes ?). J'avoue que profiter du coucher des couchers et levers du soleil sur les dunes, ainsi qu'une nuit bien noire pour profiter du ciel me plairait bien. Si c'est nuageux plus vraiment d'intérêt...
4) Comme on en compte pas passer toutes nos journées sur la route (on ne veut pas faire "l'excursion en 3 jours" comme proposé par plein d'agences), quels sont les musts à faire sur ce trajet, qui permettraient de rythmer de manière sympathique la journée ?
Certainement plein d'autres questions à ceux qui connaissent bien la région quand on y verra plus clair sur l'itinéraire.

Au mois de septembre prochain, ma famille et moi (ma femme et 2 enfants de 2 et 4 ans) iront au Maroc pour un voyage de 3 semaines. Nous arriverons à Marrakech et nous repartirons de Tanger. Il s’agira de notre deuxième voyage au Maroc, lors de notre premier périple (2010), nous avions fait Marrakech, Mirleft, Ouazazate, Vallée du Dades, Gorge de Todra, Merzouga et Fes. Malgré le fait que nous avions grandement aimé notre voyage, nous aimerions visiter d’autres choses. Nous avons donc pensé de faire l’itinéraire suivant :
- - Marrakech (2 ou 3 nuits) - - Location d’une voiture et départ vers Taroudant (1 nuit) - - Mirleft (3 ou 4 nuits pour se reposer - coup de cœur de notre premier voyage, superbes plages et beaucoup de quiétude!) - - Guelmin (1 nuit ou juste une escapade à partir de Mirleft - marché de dromadaire le samedi, est-ce que ça vaut la peine ???) - - Tafraoute et sa région immédiate (Amtoudi? 3 ou 4 nuits) - - Avion vers Tanger - - Tetouan (2 nuits) - - Chefchaouen (2 nuits) - - Tanger (3 nuits) - - Retour Que pensez-vous de notre itinéraire? Quelques questions : - - Est-ce que l’Anti-Atlas et le sud vous apparait comme étant un bon choix étant donné que nous avons beaucoup aimé notre précédent voyage? - - Est-ce que nous devrions aller à Essaouira et passer moins de temps ailleurs? - - Est-ce que nous devrions passer par la route Tizi-N-Test? Nous aimons avant toute chose visiter des parcs nationaux, des ruines archéologiques, emprunter des routes de montagne, et voir des paysages comme des gorges, par exemple.

Just so you know, I’m planning to do this trip solo (25 years old), using only public transport and just a backpack. I’ve already been to Marrakech and climbed Mount Toubkal two years ago...
I’ll be arriving in Tangier. Day 1-2: Explore the city center, hike around Cap Spartel... Day 3: Stop in Tetouan Day 4-5-6: Chefchaouen and a day hike in the Rif Mountains Day 6-7: Discover the city of Fes (I’ve heard so many great things!!) Day 8: Stop in Meknes and possibly visit the historic site of Volubilis Day 9-10: Rabat (I’ve heard mixed things... some good, some bad) After that, I have the choice of heading back to Tangier for my return flight... or going down to Agadir (also a possible return flight) and extending my trip by 5 days :)
From what I can tell, everything is well connected by bus (CTM) or train (ONCF). Another question: Is the vibe in Moroccan youth hostels for meeting people the same as what you’d find in Western Europe?

Day 1: Agadir → Essaouira Morning: Crocoparc/cable car/kasbah (I’d considered Paradise Valley, but it seems less great now? Dirty, drought, etc.?) Depart for Essaouira, lunch in Taghazout around 1 PM. Mid-afternoon to evening in Essaouira, overnight there. Visit the medina, walk along the ramparts and fishing port. Sunset from the Skala du Port or the beach. Dinner at one of the seafood restaurants near the port.
Day 2: Essaouira → Marrakech → Agafay Desert Morning: 🔹 Early departure from Essaouira to Marrakech (~2.5 hours). Afternoon: Explore Marrakech: 🔹 Jemaa el-Fna Square 🔹 Majorelle Garden Late afternoon: 🔹 At 3 PM, depart for the Agafay Desert (~1 hour) for a camel ride + quad excursion. Evening: 🔹 Dinner and overnight in the desert.

Sunset from the Skala du Port or the beach. Dinner at one of the seafood restaurants near the port.

I’m planning a road trip to Morocco in about a month. I’ve read quite a few discussions, posts, comments, and travel journals that have helped me prepare, but I still need your valuable input. The north seems easier to plan. It’s the south that’s got me wondering.
The plan: - 20 days in the south solo, going off the beaten path (looking for simplicity, encounters, discovery, and breathtaking views) - 10 days in the north with my wife and her 8-year-old daughter (so more coastal, some sightseeing—more "classic") When: August (I know it’s not the best time, but no choice) Duration: 20 days in the south + 10 days in the north (might seem short) Distance: 3,000 km in the south over 20 days. Rental vehicle to be decided (4x4?) (I’ve done a Portugal road trip from Lille—5,000 km in 3 weeks—and Italy several times, usually around 4,000–5,000 km in 3 weeks).
Route (I need to plot this on a map like Maps.me or Google...): Start in Marrakech -> Tinmelt -> Icht -> M’hamid El Ghizlane -> Agdz -> Khamlia -> Errachidia -> Tinghir -> Imilchil -> Boulmane Dadès -> Ouarzazate -> Telouet -> Demnate -> Arousse -> Ahansal Gorges -> Tilouguite -> Bin El Ouidane -> Oued El Abid Gorges -> Ouzoud Waterfalls -> Marrakech
On paper, this all seems "doable"... I’ve never been to Morocco before. It’s my first time. I’ve heard that Morocco is best experienced "slowly and peacefully," taking your time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these points—that’s the whole point!
