We're spending 4 days in Krabi in April—lots of walks, hikes, and sites to explore, all about 30 km away.
I'm wondering, since I'm not a big fan of minibuses (some of us get motion sickness easily), is it feasible to rent a car to explore the Krabi area?
Or is that a bad idea?

Has anyone else run into problems renting a car with a French credit card at Bangkok International Airport with international rental companies (like Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz)?
These international car rental companies require a "credit card" to hold the deposit when picking up the vehicle. However, in several countries, French credit cards are considered "debit" cards rather than "credit" cards (even if "credit" is printed on your Visa bank card, for example). The rental agencies can't "block" the deposit with certain bank cards (though paying for the rental itself isn’t an issue), and they’ll refuse to give you the vehicle even if the rental was already paid during booking.
I’ve already had this issue in several countries (Chile, Canada) with international rental companies that refused my bank card for holding the deposit, even though "credit" is clearly printed on my Visa Premier card.
Has anyone encountered this problem in Bangkok?

Our flights are booked, and we’ll arrive in Thailand at the beginning of January.
Originally, we were supposed to spend 14 days there. But after booking the flights and seeing the prices, we’ll now be there for 20 days instead.
Our initial plan was: 2 days in Bangkok 1 day in Ayutthaya 4 days in Chiang Mai 6 days around Krabi
So we have 7 more days to fill. What do you recommend?

Il a tellement de discussion sur le sujet et d'avis divergeants (qui dérivent parfois en débats houleux) que je suis un peu perdue. Du coup je me suis dit que j'allais rajouter une 1001 discussion 😉
Alors voila le topo, nous sommes un jeune couple et avions l'habitude de voyager dans des pays plutôt "développés et Occidentaux" (Europe, USA, NZ, Chili, Argentine...) en mode road trip et camping plus ou moins sauvage pour y pratiquer des activités plutôt engagées en autonomie (Canyoning, Raft, Trek). Mais depuis, BB est arrivé et nous devons revoir notre façon de voyager. Du coup je me dit, pourquoi ne pas profiter de ne plus pouvoir faire d’activités engagées pour aller dans des lieux un peu plus dépaysants, moins a la mode occidentale, et avec des plages et du soleil en janvier ou avril (et oui BB adore se baigner). Et la je pense a l’Asie et notamment a la Thaïlande. Nous aurons 3 semaines devant nous en janvier ou avril.

Alors évidement je cherche l'impossible mais peu être que quelque chose se rapprocherait de cela: - Des iles calmes et pas bétonnées. Nous aimons la solitude (relative) et ne sommes pas intéressés par les grandes villes, les grands hotels et les boites de nuit. - plein de choses a faire en autonomie, Snorkling, Plages, balades, rando, kayak de mer, villages authentiques. Nous ne sommes pas intéressés par les excursions en groupe ni par l'exploitation des éléphants. - la possibilité de séjourner sur plusieurs iles en restant environ 5 jours au même endroit a chaque fois. L’idée c'est tout de même de se poser et profiter sans se lasser... Nous ne voulons pas avoir a prendre l'avion en milieu de séjour. - sur place la possibilité de se déplacer sans difficulté, a pied ou en louant un tuktuk par exemple?
Golf de Thaïlande ou cote Ouest, je ne sais pas. Du moment qu'il n'est pas trop compliquée de s'y rendre.
Ok l’équation est compliquée, mais vous allez trouver j'en suis sure, et si la réponse se trouve dans un autre pays je suis preneuse aussi. Je pense a la Malaisie par exemple, d’ailleurs je vais poster sur cette destination également. En revanche la réponse " ne voyagez pas en Thaïlande avec un BB" ne sera pas retenue ce n'est pas la question.

For those wondering about driving: no problem at all. The road network is excellent, with plenty of four-lane highways.
Driving is easy if you're careful. Avoid driving at night and stay alert around two-wheelers.
I’ve been driving there since 2016—I’m no spring chicken—and I’ve covered Thailand from north to south and east to west, even Bangkok. Maps.me and vigilance are all you need...
It gives you incredible freedom and lets you discover places that aren’t too crowded yet.

Bonjour nous prevoyons un sejour de 2 semaines en thailande en mars nous avons prevu d'atterir a phucket et faire les iles kho phi phi et kho lanta et apres aller sur khao lak.si quelqu'un peut me donner des conseils et surtout quoi prendre comme transports et les visites a faire temples etc.. et les restos pour pas aller ds les attrapes touristes mrrci a tous de vos reponses.

je souhaite des vacances simples mais avec un certains confort, j'ai un budget d'environ 100 euros par jour, soit 2100 euros pour les 21 jours sur place

I’ve been in Nan since yesterday and... I love it! So thanks, Thierry. It’s exactly the kind of place I’d been dreaming of... Even if communication is a bit tough, it’s not impossible. They don’t even know the most basic English words! Everyone laughs and they’re the first to pull out their phones to... translate. They’re even quicker on the uptake than I am.
And then there’s the time I say Nan (pronounced "Nane"). They don’t understand me. After a while (sometimes a long one), they reply: "Ah, Nan?" (pronounced "Nane") 😵🤳😃
The town is exactly how you described it back in 2022. Though I’m surprised to find so many trendy, slightly intellectual "Cafés." Apparently, coffee—excellent everywhere—is king in Nan. It feels like a university town. And it seems pretty lively at night! But for now, I’m going to bed early. I caught a nasty cold, which didn’t stop me from walking 12 km this morning. But I came back to my accommodation by 3 PM (gorgeous and luxurious with top-notch service for 800 baht—even a cute local welcome gift this morning, plus other unexpected touches like a bottle of honey and chrysanthemum flowers for tea. The lady must’ve guessed I was coming down with something yesterday). I thought about going out for dinner but didn’t have the energy. I think I’ve got at least 39°C fever...
Anyway, I’m sending you this message, Thierry, because you mentioned a daily bus to Chiang Rai, so I didn’t look into it. But now it’s a real problem—no buses to Chiang Rai, only taxis. At least 2,500 baht for the cheapest one! I’ll check the bus station directly tomorrow. Online, it’s all taxis, no buses. I’d like to explore the countryside/mountains if I can find an affordable driver. Any ideas for destinations or itineraries? Thanks.

Departure from Bangkok on January 11 at 2:00 AM, arriving in Brussels at 1:25 PM the same day. For professional and personal reasons, we can’t extend the trip.
I don’t plan on just lounging on a beach in Phuket, so with 9 days on the ground, I know it’s short... But having done this before in Hong Kong and Shanghai, I know it’s doable, refreshing, and enjoyable. We did it with the kids and included a 2- or 3-day stay at Disneyland in each city. Basically, we spent 5-6 days in each city.
Anyway, I’m reaching out because I’ve heard and read so many conflicting opinions that my head is spinning.
Following the saying, "don’t bite off more than you can chew," I’m assuming I should keep it simple. So I’m torn between just Bangkok or Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
If I go with the second option, I’m debating whether to head straight to Chiang Mai on the day we arrive (but given the flight times, we’d lose pretty much the whole day) or spend two days in Bangkok first, then go to Chiang Mai for 3-4 days, and return to Bangkok.

Nous partons fin mars en Thaïlande rejoindre notre fille à Phetchabun, nous pensons passer quelques jours à Bangkok et visiter le parc Khao Yai, les informations sont très floues pour accéder à ce parc et comment se déplacer à l’intérieur, peut on y loger et cela merite t’il d’y rester plusieurs jours, ensuite peut-on rejoindre Phetchabun à partir du parc où nous faut-il retourner à Bangkok? Nous ne voulons pas louer de voiture, il y a trop de commentaires négatifs sur la conduite thaïlandaise, nous n’avons envie de gâcher notre séjour à cause d’un accident . Par contre , je trouve très peu d’infos sur les moyens de circuler dans la direction de Phetchabun et alentours. Je compte sur vous pour m’éclairer grâce à vos expériences. Amicalement , Chantal

Nous serons en Thaïlande pour tout le mois de mars 2020, en famille avec un pti bout de 3 ans. Ce voyage s'inscrit dans un voyage de plusieurs mois en Asie, qui nous verra arriver à Bangkok en provenance du Sri Lanka (début mars), et repartir de Krabi (fin mars) pour nous diriger vers Kuala Lumpur et la Malaisie pour le mois d'avril.
Nous voulons consacrer ce mois en Thaïlande (où nous n'avons jamais voyagé) à descendre tout doucement de Bangkok à Krabi en prenant notre temps.
Tout d'abord avez-vous des infos particulières sur le mois de mars en Thaïlande (centre et sud)? Des zones à éviter? De ce que j'ai lu c'est plutôt une bonne période en faisant attention aux fortes chaleurs.
Dans un premier temps le but est de descendre via le train, qui est un moyen de déplacement que l'on apprécie particulièrement, de Bangkok jusqu'à Chumphon en faisant des étapes intermédiaire :
Hua hin Prachuap Khiri Khan Alentours de Chumphon
Auriez-vous des conseils? Ou des idées d'autres étapes dans le secteur?
Ensuite de Chumphon, l'idée était de se diriger vers la côte Andaman pour se diriger tout doucement vers Krabi :
Ranong, je ne connais absolument pas ce secteur mais j'ai lu beaucoup de choses qui m'ont donné envie sur cette région et les îles qui s'y trouvent.
Khao lak et la baie de Phang Nga
Et enfin Krabi
Si nous avons le temps nous rajouterons quelques jours sur une île dans le secteur de Krabi (Ko Lanta, Phi Phi? ) mais je n'ai pas encore creusé la question, donc si vous avez des suggestions c'est avec plaisir ^^

I’m looking for a beach spot within 3 hours max of Bangkok for the end of my trip (January). I know full well I won’t find that postcard-perfect vibe of the more remote islands! But I don’t have a choice. If you’ve got any ideas... no high-rises, obviously not Pattaya, somewhere quiet, swimming possible, a hotel right on the beach (and not too dirty, the beach itself!) I’ve looked at hotels around Ko Samet or, across from it, on the mainland. I spotted the Bann Pae Cabana. But nothing really exciting on either side. New ideas welcome! 🙂

We have the opportunity to get away for a little two-week trip at the very beginning of January, just the two of us, without our kids. Because of the kids, we haven’t traveled much in Asia, so we’d love to take advantage of their absence to explore Thailand. Even though I’m used to planning our trips, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed this time.
We’d like to visit Bangkok and head south by renting a car (we have an international driver’s license, and my husband has driven on the left before). I’ve managed to sketch out a rough itinerary that might work for us, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
To set the scene: we haven’t booked anything yet, we don’t like spending hours on the beach (though a little time at the end of the day is fine), we love walking and sightseeing, and what we enjoy most is being independent (so if we can avoid group tours, that’s ideal).
After that intro, here’s the rough outline of our itinerary: Day 0: Paris-Bangkok flight Days 1, 2, and 3: Bangkok (Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, markets, boat ride through the khlongs, Jim Thompson House) Day 4: Ayutthaya Day 5: Pick up a rental car and head to Sam Roi Yot Day 6: Sam Roi Yot and Prachuap Khiri Khan Day 7: Drive south – overnight near Surat Thani Day 8: Uthayan Tham Khao Na Nai, then drive to Ao Nang (staying near Tubkaek) Days 9 and 10: Boat trips (Railay, Ko Hong, etc.) Day 11: Drive to Phang Nga with a few stops along the way Day 12: Boat tour (mangroves and Ko Tapu) Day 13: Drive to Phuket Airport and return flight
A few questions and doubts: - I’d considered Cheow Lan Lake but read some not-so-great reviews (crowds, just 3 viewpoints, and the rest was meh). What do you think? - Can we start from Ao Thalane Pier for trips to Ko Hong and Ko Tapu? - I’m not thrilled about driving through Bangkok, but I’m not sure where to rent a car west of the city (since we won’t return it to the same place, I assume it’s best to target rental companies at airports).

The routes I’d be taking aren’t in Phuket itself—Phuket would just be the arrival point—but rather around Khao Lak, Krabi, Surat Thani, and the inland areas in that region.

My partner and I are heading to Thailand for three weeks (exactly 21 days there) at the beginning of July for our first trip to Asia. During this trip, we want to discover a new culture, beautiful landscapes, eat well, do some beach time (with snorkeling), all while trying to keep it authentic and close to nature.
After some research, I’ve come up with this itinerary—what do you think?
Arrival in Bangkok on Tuesday, July 7 in the morning = 2 days Ayutthaya = 1 day Travel to Chiang Mai = 1 day (flight) Chiang Mai = 2 days Trek = 2 days Travel to Khao Sok = 1 day (flight to Surat Thani + bus) Khao Sok = 3 days (4 nights total) = For this part of the trip, would you recommend staying in Khao Sok village and doing day trips, or planning an overnight stay on the lake? Travel to Koh Phangan = 1 day (bus + ferry) Koh Phangan = 4 days (we’re thinking of staying in the northeast part of the island) Koh Tao = 2 days Return to Bangkok = 1 day (taking a ferry to Chumphon then a flight) Bangkok = 1 day

I go out a lot so I’d like to know what the costs are for a budget that includes some outings, drinks, eating (local food), and a few massages (local massages).
Could those of you who know share some prices, please?
Do you think a budget of 100 € per day is reasonable?
I’ve read in some places that it’s more than enough, and in others that it’s really tight 😕

I was hoping to buy a beautiful wooden, stone, or metal Buddha statue in Thailand. On top of that, I wanted to have my statue "blessed." But then I heard it’s forbidden to take any statue or representation of Buddha out of the country... What’s the reality in practice?
Have any of you brought back a Buddha statue or other representation in your luggage? Did you make the mandatory declaration?

Bonjour , j ai reçu un mail de l agence Leclerc voyage aujourd’hui pour me dire que mon voyage prévu pour le 18 avril était annulé ! Suite à ça l agence me propose de reporter mon voyage avant le 31 mars 2021 mais Seulement dans des destinations bien précises (Grèce , Tunisie etc...) si aucune de ces destinations me convient es ce que je peux exiger le remboursement intégral de mon voyage ??
J ai actuellement payer 30% de mon voyage le prélèvement du reste était censé se faire lundi( 40j avant le départ) mais pour l instant rien n a été fait , es ce que le prélèvement des 70% restant est donc annulé ?

Avec ma copine nous voulons partir d'ici trois semaines max pour 4 mois de road trip dans plusieurs pays : Thaïlande, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodge et Birmanie.
Voila on a une question. On a vu qu'à notre arrivé en Thaïlande on nous délivre une entrée sur le territoire de 30 jours max. Faut-il un billet sortie de territoire pour partir de France ou non ? Ensuite dés que l'on arrive en Thaïlande on va vadrouiller à pieds ou en transport en commun et faire les demandes de visa sur places pour accéder aux autres pays que l'on veut visiter. Pouvons nous le faire ? Et pour les autres pays faut il une sortie de territoire également ou non ?

J aimerais connaitre votre Pays coup de coeur pour l Asie du Sud est, vos suggestions d itineraire pour une famille avec 2 enfants de 8 et 11 ans.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.
So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.
