We’re a family of 4 adults (2 grown daughters) planning our first trip to South Africa for 3 weeks in August 2025, traveling independently. I’ve been drawing inspiration from several posts on the forum. I’d like to book our flight tickets and nights in Kruger Park as soon as possible since that’s the most urgent part to finalize, if I understood correctly.

Here’s a first draft of our itinerary (with lots of unknowns about what there’ll be to see/do in Eswatini, Lesotho, Durban, etc.—I feel like the Lesotho leg involves a lot of driving).

I’d really appreciate input from the experts to help us craft a great trip. Thanks in advance!

Après avoir ces dernières années privilégier l'Asie, nous allons découvrir l'Afrique en commençant par l'Afrique du Sud (espérons que ce n'est qu'un début!). J'ai lu les guides (Lonely et Routard), les carnets de voyage et les discussion sur ce site. Mon itinéraire a changé sans arrêt à tel point que je suis un peu perdue. Aussi, je soumets à vos avis, conseils l'itinéraire sur lequel je me suis arrêtée à ce jour. Vol pris - départ le lundi 27 janvier - arrivée Le Cap 6H45 le mardi 28 / Retour samedi 8 février à 8h30. voici mon projet d'itinéraire : Mardi 28 janvier - vol à destination de PE vers 11h - arrivée PE vers 12h30 - Arrivée à l'entrée d'Addo Park vers 16h. Découverte puis nuit soit dans le Park ou à proximité (avis souhaité) Mercredi 29 janvier - matin découverte d'ADDO puis départ vers Schotia (arrivée 14:45) pour safaris et nuit Jeudi 30 janvier - Safari à Schotia tôt le matin - découverte vers 10h pour la Garden Route - (activités à creuser)- Nuit à Storms River ou Nature's Valley Vendredi 31/01 - Balade le long de la Garden Route - nuit à Wilderness (activités à creuser) Samedi 01/02 - découverte Oudtshoorn - Prince Albert - Swartberg Pass - Nuit à Calitzdorp Dimanche 02/02 - En route vers les vignobles - Déjeuner à Boschendal - nuit à Franschhoek Lundi 03/02 - Babylonstoren - Stellenbosch et là dilemme soit nuit au Cap ou à Hermanus (si en février cela vaut le coup) Mardi 04/02 au vendredi 07/02 - Le Cap. En commençant par la Péninsule si nuit à Hermanus. Mais il est aussi peut-être possible d'aller directement au Cap le lundi soir et de faire Hermanus la journée de découverte de la Péninsule. Bonjour, J’organise un voyage surprise à mon mari et mes 2 garçons(11 et 12ans) en février. Dans l’idéal, ils ne connaîtront la destination qu’une fois arrivés à l’aéroport.J’aimerais Leur en mettre plein la vue. Quel serait pour vous l’itinéraire idéal sachant que nous partons du 21 février au 6 mars, avec un vol a /retour au Cap? Merci pour votre aide!

Mon conjoint et moi avons effectué en novembre dernier notre premier périple en Afrique, en Namibie. Un merveilleux voyage de plus de 3 semaines qui aujourd’hui encore me laisse rêveuse et un peu dépitée à l’idée que je ne retrouverai probablement jamais un voyage similaire procurant un tel sentiment de liberté et de bonheur, avec des paysages de dingue et des safaris en prime. Lors de ce voyage mon conjoint m’a demandée en mariage, je suis donc en pleine prospection pour l’organisation du voyage de noces! 😎

Nous aimerions dans l’idéal part fin mai / début juin 2021 (sachant que ce n’est pas figé), pour une durée de 2 semaines en Afrique Australe. Nous rejoindront ensuite les plages - sûrement Maurice ou Seychelles - pour une dernière semaine). L’idée serait de louer un 4x4 (sûrement avec tente sur le toit).

J’ai pensé à un itinéraire démarrant au Kgalagadi (j’étais déçue de ne pas l’avoir inclus dans notre voyage en Namibie) et terminant aux Victoria falls, en passant par le Delta de l’Okavango et Chobe sur environ 2 semaines. Je n’ai pas encore bien peaufiné l’itinéraire, l’idée serait surtout dans un premier temps d’avoir vos retours sur la faisabilité d’un tel parcours en 2 semaines. L’autre option serait de suivre un itinéraire du Cap à Kgalagadi.

Les deux itinéraires vous semblent-ils faisables sur 2 semaines? Y en a-t-il un à privilégier? Je trouve peu de récits concernant le premier parcours de Kgalagadi aux chutes, peut-être que ce n’est pas la meilleure option?

Je viens vers vous pour avoir des suggestions concernant notre premier voyage en Afrique du Sud au mois de Mars prochain. Nous sommes un couple avec un bébé qui aura 16 mois au moment du voyage. Nous avons déjà réservé nos billets d'avion, nous avons pris un billet multi-destinations avec une arrivée au Cap et un départ de Port Elizabeth. Nous louerons donc une voiture, pour l'instant j'ai repéré Tempest car hire qui a de bons tarifs.

Je ne suis qu'au tout début de mes recherches, donc j'ai sûrement oublié des étapes, je n'ai pas encore écumé toutes les conversations du forum 😛 Si certains ont des petits avis, ça pourra m'aider à orienter mes recherches. Comme nous sommes avec bébé, nous souhaitons bien sûr ne pas trop nous presser.

Bon je sens que ce n'est pas du tout abouti ! Des avis? Quel logement à l'intérieur du parc Addo? Nous avons repéré pour faire éventuellement une nuit en Safari tent et une nuit en Roundavel. J'hésite à faire une 3ème nuit à Addo...(J'imagine que ce n'est pas comparable mais en Namibie nous n'avions passé que 2 nuits à Etosha et j'aurais aimé y passer plus de temps, donc une nuit à Addo me paraît évidemment trop court) Faire une étape entre Franschhoek et Oudtshoorn ou entre le Karoo et Addo? 🏴‍☠️ A l'aiiide 😏

En ces temps de confinement, je me permet de rêver à de futurs voyages. Pensez-vous qu'il est faisable d'atterrir au Cap et de faire le circuit en transports en commun jusqu'à Nairobi en deux mois? Est-ce que cela risque d'être trop juste et de ne pas avoir le temps de profiter des paysages? Nous partirons à deux et l'idée est de faire quelques safaris, les chutes et un peu de repos.

We’re back from our 3-week trip to South Africa in July. It was a family trip with our four grown-up kids (ages 18 to 25).

First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!

The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.

Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.

We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

I was thinking of continuing the questions from my first post, but since the title was changed... I’m starting a new thread

The plane should land on Saturday around 11 AM. After collecting luggage and the car, I think we’ll leave the airport between 1 and 2 PM. Question #1: Where should we stop along the way, allowing some buffer time so we don’t end up driving at night if the flight is delayed? (The idea isn’t to sightsee but just to take a break while making progress toward Kruger.)

We’ll spend part of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (a little over 4 days) in Kruger. Questions #2 and beyond: What route should we take? I’ve considered two options: either enter from the south (Malelane Gate?) and head north up to the Olifants area to exit at Orpen Gate. How many accommodations should we book in this case, and where? Or enter at Orpen Gate and exit near Hazyview (or the other way around, and near Hazyview, should it be Paul Kruger Gate or Phabeni?). In this case, it would allow us to spend 2 nights in one place and 2 in another, but we’d skip the south (or is it possible to visit it in a day?) Well, for accommodations (accessible by sedan), all suggestions are welcome… but I’ve checked October availability, and there aren’t many left 😕 I plan to spend Thursday in the park and exit before it closes to sleep outside, which would save time the next day for the drive to the airport. I was thinking of Hazyview (again, no sightseeing since we already visited the area in 2009), but do you have another/better idea?

For clarity, here’s a summary of the Kruger part: Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg and drive to ? Day 2: Enter Kruger (likely late morning or early afternoon) Days 3, 4, and 5: Kruger with exit at the end of Day 5 Day 6: Drive to the airport for the Cape Town and surrounds portion

Regarding Kruger bookings, it seems (I lost my old notes when my hard drive crashed—I backed up work documents but not vacation ones, what a mess!) that you can monitor reservations, and if a preferred accommodation becomes available, you can book it and cancel the old one. Is that still the case? (And is it easy to do?)

Thanks in advance for your answers. I’m off to reread travel journals about Cape Town and will probably be back with more questions (the accommodation availability issue seems less urgent there, so less of a priority).

Hi, We arrive in Johannesburg (Tambo) at 8:30 in the morning. Do you think we’ll have enough time to catch the 10:30 flight to Hoedspruit, or is it better to play it safe and take the next one at 11:40? The earlier flight would work better for us, but what if the plane is delayed 😕? Plus, we have to collect checked baggage! Thanks for your feedback and experiences! Danyèle

Nous sommes 5 personnes, ma femmes, moi et les enfants de 20ans, 15ans et 13ans. Programme : arrivée Johannesburg, location voiture direction blyde river pour 2 nuits puis parc national Kruger 4 jours ( quel sont les meilleurs camps ?) Bonjour. Je suis un néophyte du continent africain. Avec mon épouse nous avon 15 jours de congés fin janvier. On ne savait pas Trop où partir et en voyant des prix interessants pour Johannesburg je me dis pourquoi pas .... Mais déjà le premier hic.., le temps j ai lu que c etait la saison des pluies et que ce n etait pas forcément la meilleur période...du coup si vous avez des expériences à cette période je suis tout ouie.

Du coup sur 12 jours, on se ferait tranquillement Johannesburg, Pretoria, le Kruger et éventuellement le pilansberg. On peut se deplacer en bus ou train ou faut il louer une voiture? D apres ce que j ai compris le parc kruger peut se faire en solo....ca se fait bien?

J'ai une question concernant le permis de conduire. Nous avons décidé de partir un peu en dernière minute en Afrique du Sud (premier voyage depuis looongtemps !).

J'ai fait la demande pour le permis international mais étant donné les délais d'attente, il n'y a que très peu de chances qu'il arrive d'ici à notre départ la semaine prochaine.

J'ai lu sur les différents fils qu'il valait mieux dans ce cas avoir un permis traduit par les traducteurs assermentés répertoriés sur le site de l'ambassade. Pas vraiment pour les loueurs qui sont peu regardants qu'en cas de contrôle de police.

Pourtant, concrètement sur les nouveaux permis il n'y a littéralement ... que le titre à traduire. D'où ma question à laquelle je n'ai pas réussi à trouver de réponse claire sur les autres fils de conversation :

==> faut-il faire traduire ce nouveau permis (parce que ça représenterait un document officiel) même s'il n'y a littéralement que "permis de conduire, République Française" à traduire ?

Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

Next, I’ve put together a rough itinerary that seems good to me, but could you share your experiences and maybe point out any mistakes I’ve made?

Two weeks for a Kruger-Cape Town combo is short... but better than nothing 😉 Before booking the flight tickets, two quick preliminary questions (more will definitely follow): Is there a preferred direction (Kruger first or Cape Town first)? Is it better to go during the first half of October, the second half (or the middle 😏), or does the current unpredictable weather make it all pretty much the same in the end?

Hi there. We’ll be in South Africa at the end of February ’26 with a rental car—not a 4x4. What’s the best route between Kosy Bay and the southern part of Kruger Park? Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Any recommendations for routes/campsites? Lower Sabie, Satara? Do we really need to book accommodations in Kruger in February? And what about safaris? Thanks for your input! Franz

Bonjour, j'aimerais avoir quelques conseils d'optimisation d'itinéraires . Nous, grands parents et "voyageurs" (72-68 a) emmenons 2 petits enfants ( 13 et 9a), passionnés par la nature et les animaux , fils d'homme des bois et chasseurs à l'arc ! Nous arrivons à Johannesburg le 15 Mai 2020 et repartons de Joburg le 26 Mai. Nous louons à l'arrivée et pour tout le séjour un 4x4 avec 2 tentes sur le toit , nous dormirons donc dans des "emplacements"et seront autonomes pour la "cantine" . 12 jours de dispo. L'objectif premier est d'aller au Kruger park et d'y rester 5 ou 6 nuits. Mais quel circuit ? ensuite, pour les emplacements j'ai compris que je trouverais sur "sanpark" Il n'est pas gênant de changer de camp chaque soir, sachant qu'avec ce genre de véhicule, il faut tout de même replier la tente chaque jour pour se déplacer. Nous ne voulons pas faire des milliers de Km avec les enfants, donc nous n'irons pas jusqu'au cap ! Pour l'instant, je retiens comme autres spots, Blyde canyon et Swaziland . Si vous avez des idées conseils pour occuper au mieux mes 2 futurs "crocodiles dundee" ce serait avec grand plaisirs!

Nous allons partir en Afrique du Sud en avril prochain avec ma femme et nos deux enfants et nous sommes en train de regarder les différentes possibilités de safari. Nous irons probablement dans le parc Kruger avec une voiture de location pendant quelques jours mais nous aimerions également passer 1 ou 2 jours dans une réserve privée pour faire un ou deux game drive.

Ma question est simple : est-ce qu'il existe des réserves privées qui proposent des hébergements plus simples que tous les lodges de luxe que j'ai pu voir suite à mes recherches. Car passer ne serait-ce qu'une nuit dans une réserve privée coûte vraiment cher et comme nous ne recherchons absolument pas le luxe, c'est d'autant plus dommage de dépenser autant.

Bonjour, je prépare un voyage en Afrique du Sud. Atterrissage à Johannesburg, direction Blyde River Canyon, Kruger, Swaziland, Santa Lucia, Lesotho et ensuite direction Cap Town en longeant la côte. J'aurai aimé avoir plus de renseignement sur le temps de route entre Santa Lucia et le Lesotho. J'ai loué une voiture de type ford fiesta mais pas de 4*4. Peut-on faire la route en 1 jour entre Santa Lucia et lesotho (ou je n'ai pas de réservation pour le moment) ou faut il faire une pause entre les deux destinations ?

Bonjour Nous partons de fin décembre à fin janvier en AFS. Arrivée Joburg, départ du Cap. Nous sommes attirés entre autre par le Lesotho et Kgalagadi. Notre idée est un road trip évidemment mais nous hesitons entre location d'un 4x4 avec tente sur le toit (ds lequel je supose qu' il y aura un set pour cuisiner, c'est but ) ou voiture simple (tente ds le coffre). Et sur l'itinéraire...j'imagine qu'il est judicieux de faire des liaisons en avion... Bref si vous avez qqs blogs et qqs conseils, je suis preneuse. Merci pour votre aide. A bientôt Noëlle

J'arrive lundi 21 octobre à Johannesburg à 8h30. Je compte prendre le premier vol pour Cape Town et aller à Table mountain. Mardi 22: cap de bonne espérance et plage avec les manchots, 2e nuit à cape Town Mercredi 23 et jeudi 24: Hermanus et nuits à De Kelders en espérant voir plein de baleines. Vendredi 25: vol Cape Town Johannesburg, c'est là que ça se corse.

Hi everyone, I’m here to get some advice on visiting KRUGER Park. From what I’ve gathered through my reading, I understand there are two ways to visit the park: - Independently with your own vehicle => Do you drive all day? - By booking with a professional => Safari early in the morning and late in the afternoon. But what do you do in between?

When it comes to accommodations, the options are: - Booking in one of the park’s camps, where the lodging is basic but functional - Booking in a private reserve, which is more comfortable but prohibitively expensive - Booking outside the park, which means entering the park every morning. But if you want to stay for 3 days, that doesn’t seem practical to me. Do you have any advice for accommodations?

Now that the Kruger part is (almost) wrapped up, I’m looking at the "Cape region" section.

The idea of spending 2 days (well, more like 2 nights and 1.5 days) in the Cederberg is really tempting 😎.

I’ve reread the posts about it—more or less (actually, more less than more)—and I still have quite a few questions: - Where’s the best area to stay? Initially, I was looking at Kagga Kama, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the cost (or the trip, for that matter), or maybe Mount Ceder? Or somewhere else (without driving 6 or 8 hours from CT 😉)? It's official—I've got our flight tickets for next October! Two weeks with my 16-year-old son, aiming to see plenty of big animals and birds.

After going through a good chunk of the forum and travel journals about South Africa, I think my itinerary is ready...

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?

As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

We’ve already visited the West Coast National Park. Is covering such a distance to reach KTP (the main goal of our trip) really worth it—does it offer enough to justify the detour? Hi there, I’m heading to Kruger Park for 4 days in May 2026. Departing from Paris → Skukuza via JNB on Air France. Here’s what’s worrying me: my flight lands (in theory) at JNB at 8:30 AM (Terminal A), then I’ve got a JNB → Skukuza departure at 10:05 AM (Terminal B). That leaves me with 1 hour and 35 minutes to make the connection and clear customs. I don’t have any checked luggage—just carry-on. I called Air France, and they said it’s doable (in theory) with a minimum connection time of 1 hour 30 minutes (which is why they sold the ticket), but I’ll need to move quickly. From your experience, is this realistic in practice? Can I ask customs officers to let me through as a priority? (I’ve got my flight ticket to show.) Thanks for your insights! Serge

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out today to gather some great tips for the second part of our trip to South Africa, which will take place from 03/21 to 04/11. We don’t want to rush too much either. We’ll start in Cape Town (tickets already booked) since it seems like a good time to visit this region—except for the whales in Hermanus, which we won’t be seeing. Oh, and I almost forgot, we’re renting a car for both legs of the trip for more freedom.

The first part is planned like this:

- 03/21: Arrival in Cape Town, staying until 03/24 - 03/25: Visit to the Cape, including a stop in Simon’s Town - 2 nights in Stellenbosch from 03/26 to 03/28 - 3 nights in Knysna to explore the area from 03/28 to 03/31 - 03/31: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, where we’ll spend one night in Umhlanga

After that, I’m a bit lost 🙂. Next, I was thinking of doing:

2 nights in St. Lucia 2 nights in Eswatini 4 nights in Kruger Park (2 nights in Skukuza and 2 nights in Balule to visit a private reserve) 1 night at Blyde Canyon 1 night somewhere to get closer to Johannesburg (Graskop?) since we’ll need to return the car by around 11:00 AM on 04/11.

So, does the second part make sense or not? I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I’m still a little lost . We can’t wait to be there, and your valuable advice would be very welcome. Thanks so much in advance, and have a great day! Luis

I know this question has been discussed many times before, but I’d love to hear recent opinions (post-COVID crisis) about tourist safety in South Africa. My husband is offering me the chance to take a self-drive trip in South Africa in July 2025. It’s a dream of mine—we’ve never been to Africa before, but we’ve regularly driven on the left side of the road before ;-) I’ve already booked the hotels and a rental car for a 3-week family trip (my husband and our 19-year-old son). But after talking to some acquaintances, I’ve been warned about the risks of carjacking, theft, scams by fake police, and even kidnapping… basically, a pretty apocalyptic picture of the region!!! I’ve already carefully read the recommendations from embassies and foreign affairs offices. Our itinerary would start at Johannesburg Airport with a rental car, sticking to main roads and avoiding night driving. First stop: Blyde River Canyon (exploring the area), then heading to Kruger National Park (one week), entering through the Numbi or Phabeni Gate and exiting via Crocodile Bridge to reach Eswatini (stopping at Mlilwane Sanctuary) before continuing to St. Lucia (a few days there). From St. Lucia, we’ll go to Durban to catch a flight to Cape Town. There, we’ll spend a few days with a rental car in the Camps Bay area. What do you think? I know there’s no such thing as zero risk (you could even fall out of bed!), but I don’t want to spend the whole trip on edge, constantly worried about being attacked or putting my family in danger. During vacations, we take a lot of photos—I know we shouldn’t flaunt valuables, but photography is a big part of our trips… Should we postpone this trip to a "quieter" time? If you can shed some light, I’d really appreciate it—I’m feeling a bit lost…
