My son is finishing up a year of working holiday in Canada soon. His plan is to take a bus from Montreal to Florida on 10/26, stay there for a few days, then fly to Cancun, Mexico. From there, he doesn’t have a precise plan yet, except to head down to Panama if the security situation in the countries he’ll cross allows it. Then, in March 2026, he’ll take a flight to Martinique, where he’d like to either find a sailboat (as crew) for the return transatlantic crossing (option 1) or do a sailing internship that includes the crossing (option 2).

So my questions are: - Will he be able to re-enter Mexico without an exit date or proof of a flight back to Belgium? Would being able to prove his return by sailboat with a specific date (option 2, the sailing internship) make things easier? - Are there any countries to avoid between Mexico and Panama? He’s traveling backpacker-style on a small budget.

After that, we’d like to take a domestic flight to the Yucatán. Same question—especially about safety when visiting Palenque.

We have a child, so we don’t want to take any risks with safety.

We speak Spanish and have already lived in Nicaragua for two years.

I’d like to visit Chiapas this summer with my husband and my son (young adult). After a few days in San Cristobal and the surrounding area, we want to take a bus to Palenque. I’ve heard conflicting things about the danger of being stopped on the road by revolutionaries. We’re planning to take a daytime bus. Is the most direct route safe, or is it wiser to take the long detour via Villahermosa? If you’ve made this trip recently, could you share your thoughts? Thanks

A fantastic trip, dominated by the Altiplano, volcanoes, and especially the Mayan people!

Our route: Antigua – San Lucas de Toliman (Lake Atitlán) – Chichicastenango – Sayaxché – El Remate – Flores – Río Dulce – Livingston – Antigua I won’t describe our trip in detail but will highlight a few points that go beyond the usual routes and really won us over. In Antigua, it’s easy to take a chicken bus from the bus station next to the central market in the eastern part of the city to visit nearby villages. We went to Santa María de Jesús on a Sunday without seeing any other Westerners. We got lost in its colorful market, ate at a *comedor* with local dishes we didn’t find anywhere else, and were surrounded by incredibly welcoming Mayans. Several villages around Lake Atitlán are well-covered by travelers and guides like *Routard* and *Lonely Planet*, but if you want to stay somewhere more authentic, I recommend San Lucas de Toliman (we stayed at *Casa Qatzil*—great place!). It’s in the southeast of the lake, with a market on Tuesdays and Fridays, a central square full of locals (more of those super-friendly Mayans!), and the option to visit other villages by *lancha* (boat) for the day. A walk toward the lake lets you pass by the washhouses, and there are hikes accessible by *pick-up* (shared transport), like the twin volcanoes Tolimán and Atitlán or Cerro del Oro (less challenging!). We loved visiting Santa Catarina Palopó—get lost in its maze of steep alleys, admiring the blue facades with their characteristic paintings. There are direct *chicken bus* connections to Chichicastenango in 1.5 hours. Cheap and convenient, though a bit bumpy! Chichicastenango is famous for its market, described as the largest in Central America, on Thursdays and Sundays. A flood of tourists arrives between 10 AM and 1 PM, shuttled in by organized buses from Lake Atitlán and Antigua. But if you have time, stay overnight the day before and enjoy the market before 10 AM or in the afternoon. This little town (more of those welcoming Mayans!) is worth lingering in for a day or two to visit the cemetery, extraordinarily colorful and a site of Mayan rituals. Also take time to go to *Plaza Baktun*, a site considered sacred in Mayan culture where religious ceremonies take place around seven sculptures several meters tall. The ruins of Aguateca are barely excavated (most structures are still covered in vegetation) and are only accessible by boat, traveling up a tributary of the Río de la Pasión to the sound of howler monkeys and birdsong (1.5 hours from Sayaxché). We felt like we got a sense of daily life in the ancient city—not just its religious dimension—with its ravine for sheltering women and children during attacks, its cliff, and defensive walls. Alone with our *lancha* driver, who acted as our guide in the barely cleared jungle, this site doesn’t overlap with Tikal at all—the vibe is completely different. We stayed in El Remate instead of Flores to visit Yaxhá and Tikal, at *Posada Ixchel* (great place!). This quiet little town lets you stroll along the lake and hike in *Cerro Cahui*, a protected biotope leading to a viewpoint. Plus, it’s on the way to the sites, saving 45 minutes per trip.

Avez-vous des informations précises sur la situation sur place (par région?) en raison de l'épidémie de covid : ouverture des sites, des hôtels, possibilité de prendre les transports en commun, etc... Après quelques contacts avec le service consulaire de l'ambassade du Mexique à Paris, il ressort qu'une"zone verte" serait non impactée (une partie côte pacifique + montagne, répartie sur 3 régions): quelqu'un pourrait nous en dire plus à ce sujet??

Olà, Je devais aller à Los Angeles le 26/06 mais je crois que c'est compromis maintenant... J'envisage maintenant de modifier mon voyage pour aller soit à Cabo, Puerto Vallarta ou Cancun. Je compte y passer 15 jours le temps d’être à l’extérieur de la zone Schengen et ensuite prendre un vol pour LAX. Que pensez vous de la faisabilité de ce projet ? Je ne suis jamais allé au Mexique lequel de ces 3 destinations ci-dessus me conseillez vous ? Mon voyage dure 8 semaines. Merci de votre attention.

Je sais que de nombreux sujets en parlent, mais certains posts sont assez vieux et j'imagine que les prix et les différentes possibilités ne sont pas les memes; Nous cherchons à aller de l'aerport à antigua, vers 22h. J'ai cru comprendre que les transports locaux etaient pas safe, et qu'il fallait mieux prendre un shuttle bus ou, dans notre cas ou nous sommes 4, un taxi. Faut il le reserver à l'avance? (notre hotel nous demande 50€). Peut on en prendre un directement sur place, prendre un uber? Merci de vos conseils

Dans la foulée j’aurais besoin d’un autre renseignement: qu’en est-il en 2020 des transports publics dans le sud de la Basse Californie ? Et les baleines, je suppose qu’en avril c’est trop tard ? Ça m’aurait bien arrangée pour le circuit (3 mois) mais du coup on va être obligées avec mon amie de prendre un vol intérieur en mars pour La Paz... Mille mercis !

Est-il possible de trouver un taxi facilement à l'aéroport à une heure tardive pour aller dans le secteur de Tulum? Comment être sur de bien prendre un taxi officiel ? Quel est le prix moyen ? Faut-il négocier ? (Pour ne pas se faire avoir)

Bonjour, Nous souhaitons aller 3 semaines en février au Yucatan et au Guatemala. Mais je voudrais que ce voyage ne soit pas trop fatigant (nous sommes un couple de retraités). Nous avons néanmoins l'habitude de voyager en individuels avec taxis collectifs ou bus (comme nous l'avons fait à Cuba, en Colombie ou au Sri Lanka). J'envisageais de prendre un vol pour Cancun et revoir les sites du Yucatan que je connais déjà. Mais pour le Guatemala je ne sais pas encore trop : y passer 9-10 jours ce serait bien. Je voudrais aller à Chichicastenango, par exemple. Et faire une sélection de lieux à visiter (je n'ai pas encore le guide; je démarre juste mon projet) sans perdre trop de temps dans les transports. Y aurait-il par exemple un bus qui partirait du Mexique( près de la frontière) et ferait un "tour" d'une semaine environ au Guatemala ? Sinon nous nous déplacerions en bus de ville en ville... I was thinking of spending 20 days in Guatemala and 10 days in Belize, especially since our flight arrives in Guatemala City and departs from Belize. We were considering hiring a driver-guide for part of our time in Guatemala. Which part do you think would be best? We’re choosing this country for all the culture and traditions it has to offer, so skipping a guide entirely would be a shame—but I can imagine it’d be tough to keep one for all 20 days. Ma copine et moi partons le 2 octobre pour le Mexique. Nous atterrissons à Mexico et nous aimerions descendre directement à San Cristobal. Seulement, nous entendons beaucoup de retour négatif sur la sécurité . Par exemple ne pas prendre de bus de nuit. Et aussi que la route de San Cristobal à Palenque est très difficile à cause de barrage.

Du coup ne savons pas trop quoi faire . Annulé notre étape San Cristobal et aller directement à Palenque mais du coup en bus de nuit ?

I’m heading to Guatemala for 18 days in August with my 11-year-old and I’m wondering if renting a car makes sense—not so much because of the road conditions, but because I’d like to spend about 3 days in Livingston. Since it’s only accessible by boat, I’d have to leave the car in Río Dulce. Maybe possible at a hotel, but that means paying for a rental for 3 days without using it... Same issue for Semuc Champey—it’s only reachable by 4x4, and I won’t be renting that type of vehicle.

Also, has anyone traveled from Panajachel (Lake Atitlán) to Cobán (to explore the caves and waterfalls in the area)? According to Google Maps, it’s a 6-hour, 44-minute drive... so whether by car or minibus, it’s *really* long (same for Cobán-Flores later). Are there any interesting stops along the way where I could spend a night? And if I’m not renting a car, is it possible to take two private shuttles for this route?

My partner and I would like to travel to Mexico during the Christmas holidays. We’re well aware that this is a peak tourist season, but it’s the only time of year when we can take a long trip (over two weeks) due to work commitments.

We’re looking to avoid overly touristy areas and travel independently (renting a car). We want to explore Mexico’s history, take our time, and enjoy nature and the sea.

I’ve never been to Mexico before, and I’m considering the following regions (not all of them, of course): Yucatán (outside Quintana Roo), Baja California, Oaxaca, or Chiapas.

I’ve more or less ruled out Chiapas for safety reasons (even though the nature there looks amazing), and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the other regions. From experience, I know that even in highly touristy areas, you can often find quieter spots with good planning and by avoiding the main hotspots. For example, we were in Thailand last year during the same period, and aside from 2-3 places, we had a very peaceful trip—sometimes even being the only Westerners around. Would the same be true for Yucatán or Baja California?

Do you have any recommendations for nice, less touristy spots? What are your thoughts on the regions I mentioned?

I’m leaving in February and want to explore the West Coast via Route 200 from Puerto Vallarta to Puerto Escondido.

- For transport, I don’t want to rent a car. I’d like to travel the coast using *colectivos* from village to village over a few weeks. Are they available everywhere along the coast? Is this doable, or is it unrealistic? If not, is it possible to do it by bus? Do they stop everywhere?

- Do you have any places, accommodations, beaches, attractions, or great tips of any kind to recommend along this route?

- Regarding safety, do you have any concerns about certain areas? Guerrero and Michoacán don’t exactly have a great reputation, and neither does Acapulco… Should I be worried?

- Any other relevant info is welcome! 😄

- Ma première question est au niveau du climat. Je trouve un peu de tout sur le net, je préfère donc demander a ceux qui l'ont vécu. Fin Janvier et début Février, quelles températures fait-il a Mexico, Oaxaca et Mérida ?

- Je vais prendre des vols internes, notamment avec Aero Mexico et Viva Aerobus. Ces compagnies sont-elles fiables ?

- Je vais rester 7 jours complets a Mexico (-1 jour pour aller a Teotihuacan), donc 6 jours pleins, ça suffit pour cette grande capitale ? Que me conseillez-vous de voir de pas trop touristique ?

- Trouve-t-on des Uber partout au Mexique, ou seulement a Mexico ?

- Quels marchés locaux pourriez-vous me conseiller a Oaxaca et Mérida ?

Bonjour, Nous avons réservé via un voyagiste (lidl) un séjour de 10 jours au Mexique pour le 1er juillet (prestataire boomerang). Les vols sont opérés par americain airlines et font escales aux etats unis. Par peur du virus, j'ai demandé l'annulation de mon voyage pour l'effectuer plus tard.. on me répond: que si j'annule jai une pénalité de 450e par personne (nous sommes 4) et je perds l'assurance de 280e car "à ce jour mon voyage est "maintenu", ils n'ont pas de visu après fin mai.." Est ce normal?? Je pensais vu ce que j'ai lu que la loi nous protège pour des séjours allant jusqu'à septembre. Je laisse courir mais.. Qu'en pensez vous?

Bonjour 👋🏻 Oui je sais je compare pas des pommes avec des pommes mais je dois faire des choix car je suis dans la péninsule du Yucatan pour 6 jours et demie. Je fais 2 nuits à Valladolid, 3 à tulum et 2 a Playa del Carmen et hop retour au Québec. J’ai déjà une journée de réservé à la fin de mon voyage pour un baptême de plongée. Bref pendant mes 3 jours à tulum j’aimerais en consacré une soi pour la réserve de San Kiann ou une journée à Bacalar avec un tour de bateau bien sûr ! Si vous aviez à choisir pour ceux qui on fait les deux ou un ou l’autre ça serait quoi ? Côté beauté du paysage etc 😊 merci

Je vais passer un peu moins de 15 jours à Ciudad de México. Evidemment, dit quoi comme, ça fait long. Au départ, je souhaitais un peu bouger dans le Mexique : visiter la capitale et terminer par la plage. Et puis, j'ai décidé que je n'avais pas envie de courir entre vols intérieurs, check-in check-out à tout va, etc.

Alors, que faire en 13 jours à Ciudad de México ? Evidemment, visiter la vieille ville, son centre historique, ses musées, ses parcs, ses marchés, flâner à Coyoacan, prendre le temps, s'imprégner de l'ambiance etc. Mais quoi d'autres ? Quels sites, hormis Teotihuacan voire Taxco pourriez-vous conseiller ?

Quels sont vos coups de coeur de la ville et alentours ?

Enfin, quelqu'un connaitrait-il une agence qui organise des excursions à la journée (je dis ça surtout pour Teotihuacan et Taxco car je ne conduis pas), de préférence francophone ?

Nous prevoyons avec la campagne un voyage au Mexique fin mars d'une durée de 2 semaines.

Nous hesitons à faire l'ouest (Mexico) puis l'est (yucatan), ou seulement l'est. Nous ne sommes pas de gros globe trotteur avec un rythme plutôt lent (par rapport aux gens du Forum ^^) sans parler de la perte de temps dans un trajet ouest - est mais j'ai peur aussi qu'il y ait trop peu à faire dans l'est pour une dizaine de jours.

Par ailleurs, si vous avez des suggestions d'itineraire dans les 2 cas ça m'interesse !

Je pars un mois au Mexique début févier, j'arrive et repars de Cancun. Voici mon idée d'itinéraire, je me demande si c'est faisable sans courir et si je pourrais ajouter des étapes? Je voyage seule et je pense favoriser les bus (ado?), et prendre l'avion si nécéssaire pour une étape un peu plus lointaine. Je n'ai pas encore regardé combien de temps passer sur les étapes, mais ce que je voudrais c'est 3 ou 4 jours en fin de circuit sur un spot tranquille et beau ;)

Ou voir et nager dans les plus jolies cenotes, sans une affluence folle?
