Hi everyone, For those who’ve been following me... progress is being made! Anyway, just to recap for the others: I’m leaving Manyeleti (a private reserve) to do a self-drive safari in the main Kruger Park for 2 nights before heading to Blyde River Canyon (sharing all this so you can picture the route). So Satara seemed like a good base for the safari, except that you can only book accommodation in this non-private park through Sandparks to find a camp. Since Satara is fully booked, the only ones with availability for my dates are: Tamboti, Olifants, and Satara—wait, no, Satara’s full—so Letaba, sorry! Any thoughts on these camps? Because I can enter via Orpen and drive north (safari-style), which would let us explore, but: 1/ Too many km if we pick the farthest one, Letaba? If I leave Manyeleti (Honeyguide Mantobeni) after the morning safari, what time do I need to be at the camp by?

hi, after a 13-day trek between Drakensberg, Lesotho, and the Wild Coast that’ll end in Durban, I’d love to extend the fun for a few more days (4 or 5) by heading to a reserve. Ideally, it’d offer not just the usual daytime 4x4 safaris but also "morning walks." I’ve already explored the coast up to St Lucia and done Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, iSimangaliso… so I’d prefer to head south or west instead. It’d also need to include pickup and drop-off at Durban airport—I don’t feel like renting a car that’ll just sit unused for days.

I’ve done some research and narrowed it down, and Springbok Lodge (Nambiti Game Reserve) caught my eye. => Anyone familiar with it—what do you think? => Any other suggestions? I’d like to avoid Phezulu—it feels more like an amusement park—and Shongweni Nature Reserve seems more focused on family-friendly activities.

Hello and happy New Year to everyone, A friend and I are interested in going to South Africa (or Kenya) for about two weeks (last quarter of 2026) but without renting a car. Generally, I don’t like organized trips for the entire duration of a trip, and what’s more, this destination is very expensive. So, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to spend, for example, a week in Cape Town independently and take day trips with a local agency, then do a week-long circuit for a safari in a park, which would leave a bit of freedom to book flights and maybe get advice from local agencies. Hi there, I’m heading to Kruger Park for 4 days in May 2026. Departing from Paris → Skukuza via JNB on Air France. Here’s what’s worrying me: my flight lands (in theory) at JNB at 8:30 AM (Terminal A), then I’ve got a JNB → Skukuza departure at 10:05 AM (Terminal B). That leaves me with 1 hour and 35 minutes to make the connection and clear customs. I don’t have any checked luggage—just carry-on. I called Air France, and they said it’s doable (in theory) with a minimum connection time of 1 hour 30 minutes (which is why they sold the ticket), but I’ll need to move quickly. From your experience, is this realistic in practice? Can I ask customs officers to let me through as a priority? (I’ve got my flight ticket to show.) Thanks for your insights! Serge

We’re back from our 3-week trip to South Africa in July. It was a family trip with our four grown-up kids (ages 18 to 25).

First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!

The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.

Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.

We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out today to gather some great tips for the second part of our trip to South Africa, which will take place from 03/21 to 04/11. We don’t want to rush too much either. We’ll start in Cape Town (tickets already booked) since it seems like a good time to visit this region—except for the whales in Hermanus, which we won’t be seeing. Oh, and I almost forgot, we’re renting a car for both legs of the trip for more freedom.

The first part is planned like this:

- 03/21: Arrival in Cape Town, staying until 03/24 - 03/25: Visit to the Cape, including a stop in Simon’s Town - 2 nights in Stellenbosch from 03/26 to 03/28 - 3 nights in Knysna to explore the area from 03/28 to 03/31 - 03/31: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, where we’ll spend one night in Umhlanga

After that, I’m a bit lost 🙂. Next, I was thinking of doing:

2 nights in St. Lucia 2 nights in Eswatini 4 nights in Kruger Park (2 nights in Skukuza and 2 nights in Balule to visit a private reserve) 1 night at Blyde Canyon 1 night somewhere to get closer to Johannesburg (Graskop?) since we’ll need to return the car by around 11:00 AM on 04/11.

So, does the second part make sense or not? I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I’m still a little lost . We can’t wait to be there, and your valuable advice would be very welcome. Thanks so much in advance, and have a great day! Luis

Hi everyone, I’m here to get some advice on visiting KRUGER Park. From what I’ve gathered through my reading, I understand there are two ways to visit the park: - Independently with your own vehicle => Do you drive all day? - By booking with a professional => Safari early in the morning and late in the afternoon. But what do you do in between?

When it comes to accommodations, the options are: - Booking in one of the park’s camps, where the lodging is basic but functional - Booking in a private reserve, which is more comfortable but prohibitively expensive - Booking outside the park, which means entering the park every morning. But if you want to stay for 3 days, that doesn’t seem practical to me. Do you have any advice for accommodations?

Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

After going through a good chunk of the forum and travel journals about South Africa, I think my itinerary is ready...

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?

As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

We’ll have traveled from Port Elizabeth to George, stopping by Plettenberg and Knysna, and we’ll be around De Rust at the end. We want to take the return route to Port Elizabeth with an overnight stop since we don’t like driving for long hours. We’re torn between going through the Karoo with a stop in Steytlerville or taking the R62 via Joubertina and Kareedouw. Which option would you recommend, please? We’re planning our second trip to South Africa in July 2026. In 2023, we did a loop from Joburg, Golden Gate, Drakensberg, Hluhluwe, St Lucia, Eswatini, Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, and back to Joburg. This time, we’d like to go to Cape Town and do a road trip to Port Elizabeth, then fly back to Joburg to return to Kruger. At this stage of my planning, here’s what it could look like:

D1 to D4: Cape Town and Cape of Good Hope (Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Waterfront, Bo-Kaap, Boulders, Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak Drive). I’ve spotted a few places to stay between Camps Bay and Hout Bay (3 nights). D5 and D6: Either Karoo NP or Hermanus and De Hoop. Any opinions to tip the scales? I’ll admit I’m already leaning toward Karoo (the "wild" vibe of the landscapes and wildlife encounters appeal to me much more than the seaside, which feels less exotic). If we go for Karoo, where should we stay? Inside the park or in Beaufort West? I’ve seen good reviews for Ko-ka Tsara Bush Camp, but maybe it’s better to stay in the Sanparks cottages to make the most of the park? (2 nights) Option B is to do Stellenbosch (though vineyards aren’t great in winter) and/or the Whale Route—Betty’s Bay, Hermanus, De Hoop (2 nights near Gansbaai). D7 and D8: Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn. Staying at De Cango Guest Farm (2 nights). D9 and D10: Knysna, Robberg Nature Reserve, Tsitsikamma (2 nights in Plettenberg Bay and 1 night in PE). D11: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Joburg at 7 AM and drive to Marloth Park.

For Kruger, I’ve booked 2 nights in Marloth Park, 1 night in Skukuza, 2 nights in Satara, and 1 night in Talamati, which we loved. I’ll book the last night in Graskop later since we want to revisit the Blyde Canyon area.

I’d love all the feedback you can give on my itinerary, especially for days 5 and 6. If you have recommendations for accommodations for 4 people, I’d appreciate those too. Thanks! 🙂

Hello, We’re a group of four seventy-something retirees and we’re planning a 4-week trip to South Africa. We’re seasoned "adventurers" used to multi-week stays (we’ve been to India seven times, Mexico, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Australia, etc.).

For South Africa, we’re thinking of covering most of the trip in a private vehicle and taking flights for inter-state transfers. We’re interested in meeting people, learning about the country’s evolution, exploring major cities, visiting traditional villages, and seeing wildlife.

Hi, Do you know how much time is needed to visit Blyde (Panorama Route)? I’ll be leaving Imagine Africa (Balule Reserve) at 10:30 AM after the morning game drive to take the Panorama Route with stops at the main sites (we can skip the waterfalls if they don’t seem worth it!). Is it doable to leave Balule and arrive in Graskop for the night, or should I add an extra night somewhere? I know it *can* be done in a day, but the drive there will eat into the time, and I don’t want to rush either!

Since I’ll have 4 nights in Cape Town and 4 for the Whale Coast and De Hoop Nature Reserve, I can add a night if needed... how should I split it up? Thanks for your great tips! Dan

Hello, I’ve got a little doubt about our arrival in Johannesburg and would love your advice. We’re landing at 2:20 PM with Rwandair from Kigali on Sunday, July 27th. We need to pick up our rental car and head toward the Drakensberg. I’ve booked accommodation about an hour from Johannesburg Airport in Heidelberg. It seemed doable to drive for an hour, but considering customs, baggage claim, picking up the car, potential traffic jams (?), and the early sunset at that time of year, I’m worried about driving at night. Hi, we’re planning to take the scenic route back from Kruger Park (Orpen Gate) but we’ll have our two travel bags in the trunk. In some countries, there’s no rear shelf to hide the trunk. I don’t know how it works in SA—what do you think?

We have the same concern because we’d like to do the Leopard Trail, but we’ll have our stuff with us too. We’re wondering if leaving the car in the parking lot where the trail starts is somewhat monitored or not. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi there, We did a trip to South Africa in August 2023 and at the time, we regretted not being able to make the most of the Cape Town area because of the weather. So we’re thinking of going back during the right season in early 2026 for 2 weeks, but I’m struggling a bit to plan the itinerary. We’d like to spend a few days on safari, but options are somewhat limited in this (large) geographic area since it’s not the right season for KTP, and Addo Elephant Park doesn’t seem like the best choice. Are there any interesting private reserves in this area? Otherwise, we’re considering starting with a few days in Madikwe from Johannesburg, then about ten days from Cape Town. For those 10 days, do you have any suggestions that go beyond the classic Garden Route? We’ve heard good things about the Cederberg, but after that, I’m struggling to put together something coherent. Quick question: we're leaving from Midrand, taking the N14 to Vryburg, then heading toward the McCarthy's Border crossing. After that, we want to reach the Mabuasehube Gate. The question is, how long does it take to get from Midrand to the Mabuasehube Gate? We plan to make one stop near Vryburg to fill up on drinks and snacks. They’re SAT 4 RENT and RENT A SAT. RENT A SAT is the cheaper option but only includes 10 minutes of satellite communication—after that, it’s $1.99 USD per additional minute.
