I’ve finally decided to make my childhood dream come true—and at the same time, fulfill my two boys’ dreams (ages 9 and 13). Just to give you some context, we’re used to "backpacker" vacations—the little one even crossed Malaysia on my back. But now I’ve got a teenager, so if I pack too much, he complains, and I’m getting older, so I’m more tired 😉.

I’ve put together this itinerary trying not to rush, based on a felucca trip with a small local agency that has a solid reputation.

Day 1: Late arrival in Cairo Day 2: Cairo - Flight to Aswan (11:20 PM)? Day 3: Aswan? Cairo? Day 4: Aswan Day 5: Sail Day 1 Day 6: Sail Day 2 (camel market + Kom Ombo) Day 7: Sail Day 3 (Jabal El Silsila) Day 8: Sail Day 4 Edfu - transfer to Luxor - arriving at 2 PM Day 9: Luxor (Valley of the Kings) Day 10: Luxor (Karnak) Day 11: Luxor / Cairo? Day 12: Cairo: Giza Day 13: Cairo Giza again - Flight home at 11 PM

My main question is about how much time to allocate in Aswan, Luxor, and Cairo to avoid missing out but without feeling rushed. We definitely have: - 3 full days in Cairo - 2.5 days in Luxor - 1 day in Aswan

I can adjust a bit: - By adding 1 day in Aswan or Cairo - By adding a half-day in Cairo or Luxor.

What would you recommend and why?

Après une quinzaine d'années à voyager avec ma moitié... c'est en Indonésie qu'il m'a demandé en mariage et en Egypte qu'on part en voyage de noces dans 3 semaines 😎 Pour 3 semaines, du 16/09 au 05/10.

Pour une fois, je me suis dit que j'allais passer par une agence de voyage, pour qu'on se la coule douce... Finalement, ayant été un peu déçue par mes échanges avec diverses agences, on va se débrouiller comme d'habitude. On va simplement se reposer un peu plus sur des agences locales, nos hôtels etc pour nous organiser les différentes parties du voyage !

BREEEF je voulais soumettre notre itinéraire à vos avis éclairés, ce serait super de savoir ce que vous en pensez. On a envie de prendre notre temps pour visiter les sites, et on finira par une petite semaine au bord de la Mer Rouge pour farniente + plongée.

J1 (16/09) : Arrivée Le Caire 20h25. J2 : Le Caire (musée + citadelle + mosquée). J3 : Journée aux Pyramides. Son et lumière le soir. J4 : Dachour + Saqqarah. Le soir, on reprend nos bagages à l'hotel puis avion pour Louxor (22h45 > 23h50). J5 : Visite Louxor + Karnak. Son et lumières le soir. J6 : Vol montgolfière le matin (selon météo !). Visite Vallée Rois / Reines. J7 : Abydos + Denderah. J8 > J11 : croisière sur le Nil de 5 jours 4 nuits en dahabeyah, avec visite de quelques tombeaux de la Vallée des Rois (pour compléter ce qu'on aura déjà vu), Edfou, Kom Ombo, Djebel Silsileh, ... J12 : Arrivée Assouan le matin, visite Philae. Transfert Abou Simbel en privé l'après-midi. Nuit Abou Simbel, son et lumière. J13 : Visite Abou Simbel. Transfert Assouan. Balade felouque Ile Elephantine ou Kitchener. Soir, son et lumière Philae. J14 : Transfert Assouan > Mer Rouge. J15 > J19 : Mer Rouge ! On hésite encore entre El Quseir et Marsa Alam... J20 (05/10) : retour, à partir de Marsa Alama ou Hurghada, selon où on sera et les avions.

Hello, We’d like to spend a week in Luxor and Aswan in February. I’d asked a tour operator to organize the trip for us, but I think it’s way too expensive for what’s included. So I’m going to try to plan it myself, and with your help if you don’t mind. We’re 76 and 77 years old and in good shape, but I doubt we’ll be getting up at 6 a.m. every day. I bought a paper guidebook, but I haven’t read it all yet. We arrive on a Saturday at 5 p.m. and leave the following Saturday at 6 p.m. Here’s what I’d like to do: The first three days in Luxor: - Valley of the Kings: 3 tombs + Seti I and Ramses VI, and Hatshepsut; see the Colossi of Memnon along the way. Ramesseum??? First question: How much time do we need for this? I can’t figure it out. Can we see anything else the same day without feeling overwhelmed or too tired?

- Karnak Temple: Should we start with it or with Luxor Temple? How much time for both? Sound and light show in the evening? Or just Luxor Temple illuminated? Can the Avenue of Sphinxes be seen separately?

- Valley of the Nobles (2 combined tickets), Artisans’ Village, and Medinet Habu: Same question—how much time? Can we see anything else?

No one ever talks about lunch or going back to visit in the afternoon. Is it too hot? I saw there are one or two small restaurants near the temples—do you know any? Or is it better to go back to Luxor?

What’s a fair price for a taxi for a day like this? We’ll probably stay on the East Bank.

- Day 4: Then we’d like to go to Aswan, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo along the way. I’ve seen prices around 140 € for a private car with a driver.

- Day 5: Unfortunately, no matter how I rearrange the days, we’ll only have one day for Abu Simbel. I’ve seen prices around 140–150 €. I don’t plan on getting up at 3 a.m.—what time should we leave so it’s not too bad? We won’t have much time to explore Aswan after two days on the road plus a third to return to Luxor.

- Day 6: Philae Temple—I’ve read a lot of comments saying it’s a madhouse to get the boat. How much should we pay to avoid haggling for hours??? How much time for the visit? Return to Luxor—I was tempted to take the train, but so far I’ve only seen options very early in the morning. The price is also around 150 €. - Day 7: In Luxor, since our flight leaves at 6 p.m., I thought we’d visit the Luxor Museum. Does this itinerary seem reasonable? Is there another way to organize it? Of course, if you know drivers who offer good rates, I’m interested—but I want a good driver who doesn’t drive too fast, a car with AC and in good condition for the long trips (we’re not 20 anymore). Jour 1 (dimanche 18 octobre) : arrivée très matinale au Caire à 1h30. Nous comptons prendre un train dans la matinée pour nous rendre à Alexandrie. Jour 2 : matinée et déjeuner à Alexandrie. Train en début d'après-midi pour retourner au Caire et y prendre le train de nuit pour Louxor Jour 3 : arrivée matinale à Louxor. Vallée des Artisans, vallée des Nobles et Medinet Habou avec le guide conseillé par Brigitte s'il est disponible Jour 4 : avec ce même guide, visite de Abydos et Dendara Jour 5 : survol en montgolfière tôt le matin. Visite du temple de Karnak Jour 6 : train dans la matinée pour aller à Assouan. Iles Elephantine et Kitchener. Souk Jour 7 : Temple de Philae et Musée de la Nubie Jour 8 : transfert pour Abu Simbel et hôtel sur place Jour 9 : visite du temple avant l'arrivée des groupes. Retour sur Assouan dans la journée. Début de la croisière pour descendre le Nil en direction de Louxor Jour 10 : croisière Jour 11 : croisière Jour 12 : croisière jusqu'à Esna et transfert à Louxor (si felouque si j'ai bien compris) ou jusqu'à Louxor (si dahabiyya si j'ai vraiment bien compris ?!) Quelques interrogations : - j'ai souvent lu qu'il n'était pas tellement plus cher de prendre un avion pour le trajet Le Caire/Louxor plutôt que le train de nuit, pour un gain de temps non négligeable. Toutefois, je trouve difficilement des billets à moins 120/150 euros pour l'avion. Je m'y prends trop tôt ? - j'ai regardé pour faire des simulations de réservations de train sur le site de National Egyptian Railways ; or même à des dates proches (courant mars par exemple), impossible de réserver. Une astuce pour m'aider à réserver ? - les transferts pour Abu Simbel depuis Assouan se font-ils en convoi ? ou peut-on partir en milieu de journée en voiture individuelle avec chauffeur ? - pour la croisière, je suis en contact avec une agence locale à Assouan (sur felouque) et attends une réponse de l'agence conseillée par Brigitte. J'ai parfois lu que le dimanche était le jour privilégié pour les départs en croisière. Si je m'en tiens à mon itinéraire, le jour 9, début de la croisière, tombe le lundi 26. Vaudrait-il mieux que nous enlevions un jour à Louxor (le 4e ou 5e par exemple) pour le positionner avant notre retour sur le Caire afin de pouvoir commencer la croisière le dimanche 25 ? - autre question sur les croisières : est-il possible de naviguer du temple d'Abu Simbel à Assouan ? (hors gros bateau de croisière) - si nous devions faire un spectacle de sons et lumières, lequel devrions-nous privilégier ? Je garde un souvenir très mitigé de celui de Karnak auquel j'avais assisté en 1999 Dernière précision : ayant séjourné au Caire en octobre 2010, nous prévoyons de n'y rester que peu de temps, le temps justement de retourner aux pyramides de Gizeh, Saqqarah et au mastaba de Tî Un grand merci d'avance pour vos conseils avisés et critiques !

Vol direct pour le Caire par Air France, départ de Roissy à 18h10, arrivée à 23h45 On a donc demandé un transfert Aéroport à notre hôtel pour être tranquille (transfert gratuit si 2 nuits à l’hôtel, sinon 15$, après l’avoir découvert, on a réservé 2 nuits), super grande chambre pour 4, un salon et 1 chambre avec 2 grands lits. Et la surprise du matin, c’est la vue du rooftop sur les pyramides (oui les 3 !) où on nous sert un ptit dej énorme ! Et tout ça pour 74 € la nuit pour 4, ptit dejs compris. C’est le https://www.booking.com/hotel/eg/giza-pyramids-inn.fr.html?aid=925773 Jour 1 : On prend un taxi par l’hôtel pour la journée pour les pyramides de Dahchour, moins d’une heure de voiture, il n’y a personne, c’est génial, on peut rentrer dedans à 4 pattes, superbe visite ! Puis le taxi nous dépose à Saqqarah, beaucoup de travaux, plus de monde, mais l’entrée du musée est comprise dans le billet et on voit notre 1ère momie ! Le taxi nous emmène à la gare (les sites ferment à 16h) pour acheter nos billets train de nuit pour Louxor, on n’arrive pas à prendre un train « égyptien », on prend des billets sur le train de nuit pour touriste à 40$ par pers en siège confort et repas (c’était 80 pour des couchettes, apparemment qqs € en train égyptien et des françaises rencontrées plus tard nous on dit que c’était confortable aussi. Pour le train de nuit https://www.wataniasleepingtrains.com/ . On rentre à l’hôtel et on regarde le son et lumières depuis le rooftop, nickel. Resto à pied de l’hôtel. Jour 2 : On essaie de se lever assez tôt pour aller voir les pyramides de Gizeh. Au pied de l’hôtel, il y a l’entrée du site. On ne prend pas les entrées intérieures des pyramides qui sont toutes payantes. On arrive par le Sphinx. C’est vraiment grandiose, on marche jusqu’au bout pour avoir les 3 en alignement, super balade. On rentre même dans une cavité gratuite. On fait le grand tour par l’arrière. Vers 14h, malgré le ptit dej copieux, on cherche un resto sur le guide du routard. On en trouve un à l’opposé de notre hôtel. Mais le site fermant à 16h, quand on en sort, on doit passer dans la ville et là, c’est un choc, la vraie population, ça vaut le détour. En arrivant à l’hôtel, on demande si on peut prendre une douche, ils nous redonnent carrément notre chambre, faite, sympa avant de prendre le train de nuit. Direction la gare en taxi, train avec 45mn de retard mais qui arrive et trajet de nuit jusqu’à Luxor. Jour 3 : On a réservé une croisière par internet le lendemain de notre arrivée et par mail, j’ai pu avoir l’assurance qu’on viendrait nous chercher à la gare malgré notre heure d’arrivée très matinale. La journée à quai, on retourne se balader en ville et visiter le musée de Louxor puis l’après-midi, avec le guide, on part visiter le temple de Karnac, puis celui de Louxor, de nuit. Jour 4 : Visite de la vallée des Rois (inoubliable et plein de couleurs conservées !) puis le temple d’Hatshepsout et les colosses de Memnon. Le temps d’un jus de mangue à l’extérieur et il faut rentrer déjeuner puis départ sur le Nil. Navigation tout l’aprem, c’est beau ! Jour 5 : Visite du Temple d’Edfu avec trajet en calèche. Navigation et panne du bateau, tout l’aprem à l’arrêt alors on part visiter le temple de Kom-Ombo de nuit avec 2h de bus aller et 2h retour. Jour 6 : On arrive à Assouan sur le matin. On part visiter le temple de Philae en bateau (c’est le plus beau !) puis on faire un tour de Felouque avant de rentrer au bateau pour le déjeuner. L’aprem est libre, on se balade et on cherche un moyen d’aller à Abou Simbel sans passer par l’agence car c’est cher. On trouve un café où le patron se démène pour nous trouver un mini-bus juste pour nous. Jour 7 : Départ à 4h pour Abou Simbel (3 ou 4h de route mais confort donc on dort), ça valait le coup malgré la route, on est bluffé ! Déj sur le bateau, balade en ville, puis train de nuit pour Le Caire. Jour 8 : J’ai réservé un hôtel vraiment pas cher sur booking en demandant si 1 des 2 chambres pouvait être dispo à 6h du matin (je ne savais pas si on serait en état de repartir en balade directement). Ils ont été charmants, les 2 chambres étaient prêtes, ils nous ont même dit de prendre notre petit dej puisqu’on laissait la chambre à 23h le soir. On a trouvé un resto sympa et on est allé au souk Khan Al-Khalili au milieu d’une foule très très dense et de musique parce que c’était la fête de Mohamed. Tout ça à pied de la pension, top. Et voilà, avion vers 1h du matin pour Paris ! Et quels souvenirs en tête !

I’ve got a bit of a dilemma about our return trip from Abu Simbel to Cairo.

On November 24th, we want to travel from Aswan to Abu Simbel during the day, arriving between 2 and 4 PM to check into our hotel and see the Sound and Light show at the temples. This transfer isn’t booked yet—I still need to find ground transportation for two. We also want to visit the two temples early on November 25th, before the minibuses arrive.

That’s when things get tricky for the return to Cairo!

- **PLANE from Abu Simbel**: There’s an EgyptAir flight at 1:30 PM, but it stops in Aswan at 2:10 PM and doesn’t leave again until 8:20 PM, arriving in Cairo at 9:50 PM. Since it’s a combined flight, I assume our luggage will follow. We *could* wander around the airport area, but that doesn’t thrill me—plus, we’ll have already seen the Kalabsha Temple.

- **GROUND TRANSPORT back to Aswan** (with prior authorization, like on the way there).

- **PLANE from Aswan**: Take the same flight mentioned above, but from Aswan at 8:20 PM. But what do we do with our luggage while waiting for the flight?

- **TRAIN from Aswan at 9:05 PM**, arriving in Cairo—or even Alexandria—at 6:05 AM, since we need to go there too! This could be a fun experience if the conditions are decent. The only catch: we’d need to book the train 17 days in advance, meaning by November 8th, when we’ll be in Kharga (the last leg of our 5-day desert trip). Our French-speaking guide might be able to help reserve the tickets, though???

Which option seems the most enjoyable 😉, the least hassle 😕...

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this itinerary, but mostly I’m wondering if it’s possible—and worth it—to take a one-way flight to Abu Simbel. We’d like to spend a night there to take our time visiting the site early in the morning and catch the sound-and-light show in the evening, then head to Aswan with a private driver or by bus.

Your feedback would be super helpful in planning this part of our trip!

I backpacked in Egypt back in 1998 (as I have in all my other destinations). We’re planning to go again in early 2026. The country has surely changed, and I have a few questions for those who’ve been there recently: - Is it possible to travel completely independently from Cairo to Abu Simbel (Aswan), both legally and safely? - If some stretches are better with guidance or a guide, could you let me know where, please? - In 1998, the only way to get to Abu Simbel from Aswan was by plane. What’s the situation now? - I read a tip about arriving the day before in Abu Simbel, staying overnight to be there at opening time and enjoy the site before the organized tours arrive. Do you have any links for hotels near Abu Simbel, please?

We’ll be traveling to Egypt in mid-February and plan to spend a full day on the Giza Plateau: visiting the pyramids site + the new GEM (Grand Egyptian Museum). The question is simple: in what order should we do these two visits? I’m torn: - Pyramids in the morning because it’s less crowded, or in the afternoon for the setting sun? - GEM in the morning since tickets are timed slots, so it’d be easier to stick to the schedule than if we visit the pyramids first (we don’t know exactly how long our visit will take and when we’ll be able to get to the GEM), or in the afternoon? Anyway, I’m looking forward to your suggestions for planning this day!

On another note, the day before, we’ll arrive at our hotel on the Giza Plateau around 2:30 PM. How could we spend the rest of the afternoon (keeping in mind we don’t want to overdo it since we’ll have just flown in from France and had a very short night before!)?

Je suis allé aujourd’hui à Abu Simbel depuis Assouan. La guest house située sur l’île Eléphantine m’a facturé l’excursion pour 450 EGP. Départ à 3h30 de l’île. Un passeur nous a fait traverser le Nil. Puis nous montons dans un minivan. Ensuite, le chauffeur récupère d’autres touristes dans des hôtels de la ville (ils ont payé 300 EGP). Nous arrivons à 7h40 à Abu Simbel. La conduite de notre chauffeur fut dangereuse et donc stressante. A notre arrivée, il nous annonce qu’il repart à 9h30. Nous avons donc un peu moins de 2 heures pour visiter le site. Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas eu le temps de visiter la petite expo du visitor center. Le retour fut tout aussi stressant. Nous avons échapper à un accrochage avec un bus. Nous arrivons à Assouan à 12h45. Au final, je n’ai pas compris pourquoi nous partions aussi tôt tout cela pour à peine 2 heures de visite. L’hôte de la Guest house m’avait dit que si nous prenions le bus collectif, nous n’aurions pas assez de temps pour visiter Abu Simbel car le dernier bus collectif repartirait selon lui à 13h00. Si c’était à refaire, je prendrai le premier bus collectif pour Abu Simbel car il me semble que je bénéficierais d’autant de temps qu’en minivan voire plus. En outre, le prix du bus collectif est dérisoire par rapport à celui facturé par la Guest house.

Voici le programme: J0: arrivée tard à Assouan J1: Assouan J2: Abu Simbel J3/J4/J5: balade en felouque sur le Nil J6: Edfu -> Louxor J7/J8/J9: Louxor J10/J11/J12: Le Caire (nous passerons que 2 nuits au Caire car nous avons notre avion à 2h du matin pour rentrer du coup où dormir? 2 nuits près des pyramides? ou une nuit pyramide et une nuit au centre?) Le programme me parait classique mais n'hésitez pas si vous avez des remarques! Ce que j'aimerais surtout, c'est avoir des contacts pour les taxis/guides locaux égyptologues qui parlent français si possible. Pareil pour la felouque même si on a déjà un contact sympa. Je veux bien aussi des contacts pour le tour en montgolfière du matin à Louxor et des idées de logements un peu partout! Merci beaucoup à tous!

I’ve read everything and its opposite in travel guides and online. It seems that hotel owners—and the government—require tourists to pay in foreign currency rather than the local one (pounds). This is a huge problem for me since I’ll be in Egypt for 3 months. I can’t exactly walk around with thousands of dollars on me (I’m from Quebec). I could pay with a credit card—easier—but I think there’s an extra fee. Is that really the case? But what do I do if a small-town hotel doesn’t accept credit cards??? I thought about using a WISE debit card, but again, what if the place doesn’t have a payment terminal??? Can I hope that some establishments in less touristy areas might accept payment in pounds? And most importantly: does the same issue apply to paying for entry to archaeological sites??? A big thank you for your insights—I’m totally in the DARK here!!!

Hello everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Amateur Egyptologist here, 🙂 and I’ve finally planned a trip there before age catches up with me. I’ve booked a 10-day tour with our dear Amandine Marshall and her favorite agency (which I won’t name to avoid advertising).

The organizer’s fact sheet recommends:

Personal gear - Sunglasses - High-SPF sunscreen - Toiletries (preferably biodegradable products) - Hat or cap with neck coverage

Personal first-aid kit - Aspirin/paracetamol - Anti-diarrheal tablets - Throat lozenges - Antiseptic cream - Insect bite cream - Bandages and adhesive tape - Any regularly used medications or toiletries

What luggage should we bring? - Travel bag (70 liters) or suitcase. - Small backpack (30 liters) for day trips.

What should we pack? - Shoes: opt for "trekking" or mid-mountain hiking shoes with thick but flexible soles, preferably made of canvas. Choose shoes with good ankle support. - Lightweight, loose-fitting canvas pants that are comfortable and versatile. - Shirts/T-shirts: 2 or 3 shirts, preferably long-sleeved to avoid sunburn. Avec ma compagne nous aimerions profiter de mon congé paternité pour partir 2 semaines tous les 4, avec nos filles de 3 ans et 3 mois.

Nous avions plusieurs destinations (Andalousie et Tunisie) et réfléchissons aussi bcp à l'Egypte, pour son climat plus chaud en février, la mer rouge pour plongée papa, les pyramides et la culture..

Auriez-vous stp des avis à nous donner sur cette destination avec des enfants en bas âges ?

Maman à peur de plusieurs craintes, papa étant plus inconscient semble-t-il :) > sécurité (suite à l'explosion passée d'un car de touriste) > système hospitalité / santé (si besoin, pour un enfant de 3 mois) > chaleur / climat pour un bébé

Avez-vous aussi des recommandations sur comment passer 2 semaines dans un endroit (ou plusieurs) assez "all incluse" ? > en général nous sommes plutôt roots avec ma copine mais cette fois il va surement falloir prendre un complexe piscine hôtel plus confort (piscine, plage et centre ville animé à proximité etc..).

I’m planning my next trip outside Europe for next year, but unfortunately, I don’t have a choice with the dates—it’s late June to early July. Last year, I went to Japan for three weeks, and it was constantly 36-37°C with over 90% humidity. It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either.

For Egypt, I know it’s a period to avoid if possible, but I’m thinking that by the sea, it might be manageable. Otherwise, I’ll consider another destination.

Day 1: Arrival in Hurghada in the evening Day 2, 3, 4: Hurghada Day 5: Hurghada, then drive to Luxor in the early afternoon Day 6: Luxor Day 7: Luxor, then drive back to Hurghada in the late afternoon Day 8, 9, 10, 11: Hurghada Day 12: Return flight

For the Hurghada trip, either rent a car or—easier—a private car/van. Is it worth adding an extra day in Luxor?

During the stay, we’re planning activities like camel rides, quad biking, jeep tours, snorkeling, and jet skiing.

I’ve booked a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. The excursion to Abu Simbel is offered as an option, but for a family with 2 kids, it comes to 500 € for a lot of bus travel and very little time on site. Is it possible to find a local agency, taxi, or guide on the spot who’d offer the trip for less? Do we have to travel in a convoy? Thanks for your tips! Fred

Jai réservée mon voyage en Egypte pour 4 personnes au départ . jusque la tout va bien une semaine après le copain de ma fille qui a 19 ans réserve le même voyage pour une semaine. l agence le met dans mon dossier sans rien me demandée et rajoute le nom de ma fille or quelle et prévus dans notre voyage. Maintenant il me réclame les frais d annulation du dossier de son ( ex copain ) or qu il me dit que ses bien 2 dossier diffèrent chez fti. ma question est suis obligés de payée. un tout grand merci pour vos réponse.

Je me demande ce qui a déjà quitté l'ancien musée du Caire à propos des objets. J'ai des amis qui partent en Egypte prochainement. ils comptent se rendre au musée. Je me pose la question de savoir s'ils vont voir des salles pleines de caisses de déménagement. Je lis dans Egypt Today que 49000 objets ont déjà pris le chemin du GEM. Je suppose que ce ne sont pas que des objets en provenance des réserves. Est-ce que les vieilles vitrines pleines de poussière ont été vidées de leur contenu ? Qui a été dernièrement ?

For 15 days, what would the price range be, considering there’s an overnight train and a Nile cruise? I’d like to compare with a travel agency. This trip to Egypt isn’t happening anytime soon, but I like to plan a few steps ahead! 😉

I’ve already been to Egypt several times (Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, the classic cruise, the Lake Nasser cruise, Abu Simbel, Taba) both solo and on organized tours, but my partner hasn’t.

So, I’m thinking of mixing the classic with something a bit more original.

My idea is to visit Cairo and its surroundings, then make my way to Luxor in stages. The trip would end in Luxor.

Renting a car doesn’t seem like a viable option. That leaves boats, public transport, a car with a driver, or even a private tour for the stretch between Cairo and Luxor.

My questions:

How can I cover the Cairo-Luxor stretch if I go through the White Desert? Is a car with a driver possible? What’s the daily cost of hiring a car with a driver (including the driver’s accommodation and expenses)? How many days should I plan for this route (Saqqara, Fayoum Oasis, Black Desert, White Desert, Ad-Dakhla, El Kharga)?

Are there any cruise boats that do the Cairo-Luxor route (or vice versa)? Dahabiyas? Or at least the Assiut-Luxor stretch?

We just got back from a trip to Egypt: 2 days in Cairo, then a week on the Nile with a cruise through a tour operator. An incredible discovery of the Pyramids of Cairo—such an emotional moment! Then a wonderful stroll along the Nile, where we leisurely soaked in the "life" along this river. An exceptional guide who transported us back less than 4,000–5,000 years BC... But here’s the thing—because there’s often a "BUT"—the flip side is discovering a *very* polluted country! Even on the Nile, the number of boats is staggering (I went barefoot on the boat one day, and by the end of the day, my feet were black with soot?). In Cairo, with nearly 20 million inhabitants, there’s trash everywhere (except around the airport and villa areas). We even saw a dead cow with stray dogs eating its "innards"—but no one seemed bothered! By the way, there are *tons* of wild dogs in Egypt and very few... cats! One day after our arrival, we had to pay our entry visa to the guide on the bus—and *only* in cash? 95 EUROS???? A disgrace, since the visa price is $25 (as stated on the visa stamp)... Someone needs to explain where that money goes??? The excursions (optional ones) are *five times* more expensive than the posted rates for tourists. There are two prices: one for Egyptians (which makes sense, given an average salary of 360 euros/month). On top of that, the cruise manager asked us to pay half in cash and half by card (we refused and paid everything in cash). First time I’ve ever seen that payment method for excursions—where *does* the money go?... During a stop in Aswan, we wanted to visit the Nubian Museum (amazing!). We took a carriage, and before leaving, we agreed on a round-trip price of 20 euros for 4 people to take us to the museum. It was all good with the driver—who called himself "Michel" and his poor horse, Rambo. On the way back, of course, he caused a scene, demanding *much* more... We refused and gave him the 20 euros we’d agreed on. But then, as if by chance, this same carriage driver stopped for a man who asked us to exchange two 20-euro bills and 10 one-euro coins for a 50-euro bill. I pulled out my 50-euro note while talking to Michel, and the other guy claimed I’d given him a 10-euro bill?? He handed me the bill—so you get the scam! So, be *very* careful with carriage drivers and their "colleagues"! Drinks on board are outrageously priced—a simple beer (Stella) costs 5 euros, and the wine is undrinkable... Tips are expected in euros—they won’t accept Egyptian pounds... and of course, you’re constantly harassed to exchange 5-euro or 10-euro bills, or even more! They end up with tons of coins, so we did it at first, but after a while, it’s just not possible—they insist way too much! I’ll stop here—it’s already quite long. So, a mixed-feelings trip overall...

I’m stuck in the airport on a layover, so here’s what I wish I’d known before I left! :)

When I arrived, I got scammed right away at the VODAFONE stand in the airport. They sold me a 20 GB SIM card for 10 €—cash only because their terminal wasn’t working—and it stopped working the next day… After that, I got an Orange SIM in town for 10 €, and it worked perfectly.

I’d booked my airport transfer online with B… for 7 €, but it’s even cheaper on the spot with Indrive—I paid 4 € for the return trip. Indrive helps you avoid getting ripped off, because scamming is basically the national sport here…

Naama Bay, along with Old Sharm, is the heart of the nightlife: a few bars with music and shisha, and tons of shops selling knockoffs. The beach is nice, but there aren’t any corals.

Watch out: the beaches are all paid, costing around 2 to 3 € each time, and you’ll be packed in like sardines on sun loungers that are all squished together! Only hotels have private beaches, often with a shuttle running once or twice a day. Good to know if you’re thinking of renting an apartment…

Another issue with apartments is the food—there’s not much variety in the small supermarkets.

There’s apparently a free beach in Hadaba, but I couldn’t find it. I did find Shark Bay, which is amazing… but it’s a bit far.

At first, I rented an apartment, but I ended up switching to all-inclusive stays at different hotels for the same price…

AVOID booking with STAYFORLONG!!! I booked an all-inclusive stay through them, and when I arrived, the hotel told me it was only half-board! I couldn’t get in touch with them at all… That site is a total scam.

In early February, it’s chilly at night but hot in the sun during the day. The pool water is pretty cold, but the sea is fine for swimming.

The corals are incredible! Take advantage of them!!!

That said, once you’re out of the water, there’s not much else to do…

bonjour à vous, nous envisageons de partir en Egypte une semaine pour voir les incontournables et de "sous traiter " l'organisation du voyage.

J'aurai bien pris une formule "tout compris" mais toutes se résument à voguer +- 4 jours sur le Nil entre Le Caire et Louxor. Ce qui ne m’intéresse pas du tout. Je préfère prendre un vol LeCaire - Louxor et aller directement sur les sites connus : Musée du Caire, Gyseth, Quelques tombes à Louxor et retour à Paris.

Mais connaissant "un peu" les pays d'Afrique du Nord, je préfère laisser un organisme réserver guides/ "bons" hôtels / transfert aéroport hôtel site etc... Ne pas avoir (trop) à palabrer, négocier...

Je pense que c'est que l'on appelle un voyage "à la carte" et je suis un peu perdu face à l'offre qu'on trouve sur le net et je ne sais pas si sur ce forum on peut partager des noms d'agence ou des expériences.

en gros je ne recherche pas les prix les moins cher mais le confort du logement/nourriture/organisation.

Comment pourriez vous m'aider ?

bonjour je part a la fin janvier pour egypte arrive le 21 je m installe au centre ville pour trois jour soit 21 22 23 pour visite puis depart le 24 pour alexandria car nous serons pas tres loin de la gare ramsis pour 2 nuit le 24 25 et retour au caire tout pres des piramyde le 26 27 28 le temps de tout voir puis nous aimerions aller voir le desert blanc 1 a 2 nuit soit le 28 29 et revenir au caire pour prendre le train ou l autobus car le train semble tres cher en direction de assouan pour 4 jour 30 31 1 et 2 fevrier allez bien sur sur ile elephantine puis aussi abou simbel puis si possible remonter vers luxor en felouque si ses pas trop froid sinon en croisiere le 2 3 4 5 j aimerais bien avoir une idee du prix que sa coute pour les bateau est t il plus facile de prendre une croisiere de luxor en descendant vers assouan ou ca na pas importance puis a luxor pour une semaine le temps de tout voir du 5 au 12 fevrier ensuite direction vers la mer rouge nous avons penser a sharm el sheikh pour 3nuit le 12 13 et 14 ensuite aimerions traverser en bateau vers la jordanie pour visiter le pays environ 1 semaine se qui nous ramene au 21 nous avons l intention d acheter la jorden pass puis revenir au caire c ar nous repartons le 23 nous pensons faire pas mal tout par nous autre meme , mes si nous devons prendre un guide dans quel ville devons nous prioriser je sais que pour le desert ont vas faire affaire avec un guide alors mon circuit tiens tu la route aussi aimerais bien avoir de vos idee de luxor a sharm el sheikh nous savons pas comment nous y rendre de facon economique merci de prendre le temps de me repondre
