We’re planning to visit Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap, the Angkor temples, Kompong Luong, then head down to Kampot, Kep, and finish our trip on the islands of Koh Rong. Has anyone done this trip recently? Any great spots to recommend? Neighborhoods to stay in Phnom Penh (lively but not too touristy)? Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

So, my flight tickets have just been booked for a trip to Cambodia from November 4th to 27th, 2025. I’ll be traveling solo and want to explore this amazing country while getting a bit off the beaten path. I’m arriving in Phnom Penh and also departing from Phnom Penh. My goal is to travel as much as possible by bus and scooter. What itinerary would you recommend? What are the must-do things? I’m open to all tips and info. Hi everyone! I’ve booked flights to Phnom Penh for August 26 (no layover in the Emirates as a precaution...). We arrive on Sunday, August 2 in the morning and leave on August 19 around 9 PM (also from Phnom Penh). We’re a couple traveling with three kids aged 9 to 16. Among the many questions I have about our itinerary, a few are standing out: If we arrive in Phnom Penh exhausted, I imagine we’ll need to stay one night there before heading to Siem Reap... but how much time should we spend there to enjoy Angkor in good conditions? Then, Mondulkiri or Battambang? (Because I don’t want it to be a total rush, changing accommodation every two days and praying that bus transfers or private drivers go as planned...). Where does Tonlé Sap Lake fit into all this? And if we end with a beach stay: is Koh Rong a must, or is there another spot? Also, what about the return logistics: should we spend the night before our flight in Phnom Penh to be safe... or do we do everything on August 19... like taking a boat and then the road from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, risking missing our flight if anything goes wrong? Hi everyone! I’m heading back to Thailand in July 2026 with a stopover in Cambodia to visit the Angkor site. After Angkor, I’ve booked a stay on Ko Chang island. Does anyone know if there are direct transport options from Cambodia to Ko Chang without having to go back through Bangkok? That would be amazing!! I think there are, but I’d need more details!! Voilà l'itinéraire approximatif. Sachant qu'on est désireux de varier ce que l'on va voir et faire, on aime beaucoup la nature les paysages les randos, on voudrait voir des animaux aussi, mais on aime également très bien manger haha donc les endroits avec une bonne gastronomie locale sont très importants.

Est ce que cet itinéraire semble cohérent ? Est ce que je manque des endroits inmanquables ? Est ce qu'il n'y a pas trop de ville sur la fin ? Dalat + Hoi an + hue + Hanoi, en + sachant qu'il ne fait pas très beau au nord en février ? Que modifieriez vous en somme ? Par exemple j'ai entendu de bonnes choses sur la région de mondolkiri au Cambodge niveau nature et paysages... Mais je suis ouvert à toute suggestion !

Alright, I’m scaling back the kilometers thanks to the relevance and patience of our Cambodia experts! Here’s yet another hesitation /\ When I arrive early on 01/12 in PP, I have the choice between spending a day in PP (booking a convenience room for half a day and leaving by night bus), sleeping in PP and taking the bus to SR the next morning, or hiring a driver to head back up to PP with a nice little stop and maybe sleeping in Kampong Thom or Kampong Chhnang, then heading to SP on the 13th. Then from the 13th to the 17th or 18th, exploring Angkor. I continue to Kampong Thom and stay for 2 nights (if I didn’t do it on the way there), but I might be templed-out by then. I head to Kampong Cham, where I’ll spend 2 nights—one on the island and one on the mainland. Next, I go to Kampot and Kep: probably 2 nights in Kampot, 2 in Kep, and 1 night on Tonsay Island. On 01/28, I return to PP until 01/29. One detail: how long does it take to get from downtown PP to the new airport? Because I leave on 01/29 around 7:50 PM... Anyway, I’m ready to read your unfiltered reactions 🤓 and thank you in advance for your help!

Je ne dois pas être le premier à poster ce genre de message, mais je m'interroge sur la faisabilité de mon voyage en Asie, prévu (dans l'absolu) du 29 octobre au 25 novembre.

Ma première destination serait le Nord Vietnam (avec Allez/retour depuis Hanoi mais rien n'est fait je n'ai pas encore prix le billet), 1 semaine voire 10 jours à Hanoi, Ha-Long et Sapa. Puis 1 semaine à Siem Reap pour visiter Angkor, puis, à moins d'une proposition bonus, 3/4 jours à Bangkok, puis éventuellement Chiang Mai que je connais déjà et plage en Thailande.

Mon moyen de déplacement principal serait l'avion car je ne veux pas perdre trop de temps en transit. Je sais qu'idéalement il vaut mieux se focaliser sur un seul pays, mais je préfère jouer la carte de la découverte quitte à revenir plus longtemps dans le futur.

Mon objectif est de mêler culture, gastronomie, rencontres, vie nocturne... (pas vraiment boite, plus bars tranquilles où boire une bière et rencontrer des gens)

Qu'en pensez-vous? Vu depuis mon écran d'ordinateur et google map ça me semble possible mais je sais que parfois la réalité peut être toute autre !

Par ailleurs on m'a conseillé de plutôt faire Paris-Bangkok puis Cambodge, puis Vietnam, vous pensez que ce serait plus judicieux? (La problématique est la météo au Nord Vietnam, qui devrait changer début novembre, bien que ce ne soit pas une science exacte)

Hello, I’m starting to plan my adventure in Cambodia. I’ve read a lot of your posts and really appreciate all your articles. Now it’s my turn to share my plans with you: 12/01 arrival in PP 13/01 arrival in SR where I’ll meet up with 2 friends for 6 days exploring the temples and surrounding areas 19/01 I’ll leave and finish the trip solo. I fly back on 29/01 at 8 PM, so I’ve got 10 days for a little immersion. The dilemma is whether to: # head to Battambang, then make my way to PP, Kampot, and 2 nights by the sea # go to Kratie and head down to Kampot with 2 nights by the sea (or, to cut down on kilometers, go via Kampong Cham to Kampot). Option 2 is my preference. I’m almost 70 and not too keen on rushing 😅 Thanks in advance for your time and any helpful tips! Françoise

J'envisage de faire mon premier voyage en solo et j'ai choisi le Cambodge et le Laos. Je pensais faire également le Vietnam mais je me suis vite aperçu que vouloir faire les 3 sans trop courir est un peu prétentieux.

Mon projet d'itinéraire au cambodge: Phnom Penh, Kep/Kampot, Battabang, Siam Reap Au Laos je voudrais le remonter du Sud au Nord : 4000 iles, Pakse et le plateau des Bolavens, Rivière souterraine de Kong Lor, Ventiane, Vang Vieng, Lulang Prabang, Nong Kiaw ou Muang Noi ou Phongsaly. Retour en France au départ de Lulang Prabang Je voudrais rejoindre le sud du Laos par la route via Kratie et Stung Treng

Possible tout ça en 1 mois ? Je voudrais aussi prendre mon temps et savourer chaque endroit.

Hi everyone, We’re planning to return to Cambodia in July 2026, as a family, for the third time. Since we’ve already visited Siem Reap and Battambang, we’re not considering going back this time. Instead, we’d like to travel more slowly and take the time to settle in. We’re thinking of an itinerary around Mondulkiri, Kampot, and Koh Kong (Tatai waterfalls, mangroves, etc.). For those who know the Koh Kong province and Mondulkiri well: are these areas still accessible and enjoyable during the rainy season? We’d also like to spend 2 or 3 days on an island, but we’re not sure if it’s really feasible at this time of year (sea conditions, boat crossings…). If it’s doable, which one would you recommend? We’re planning to spend only a short time in Phnom Penh, then a few days with family near Koh Thom. If you have any other ideas, firsthand experiences, or suggestions for stops that work well for a trip in July, we’d love to hear them. Thanks in advance !

Hi everyone, we’ll be in Thailand from August 2nd to 21st, arriving in Bangkok on the 2nd for a visit. From the 5th to the 8th: Angkor temples. Then, starting on the 9th, we’re planning to head to Chiang Mai, and by the 14th or 15th, we’d like to be on an island until the 19th, when we return to Bangkok. Five days in Chiang Mai seems a bit long to us. What do you recommend between the 9th and 15th, and which island? We’re not big fans of sunbathing—we’d love to snorkel and explore the island. Ideally, I’d have liked to find a house to rent, but every time, I end up with places far from the beach, whereas we’d really like to be able to walk to the beach for strolls. By the way, are there a lot of shells? Can we collect them? It seems that in August, swimming can sometimes be tricky due to tides—is that true? Thanks to all the contributors! 😊

I saw that by plane it takes 3h30 with a layover in Siem Reap, so no thanks—I was thinking of taking the bus. How much time should I allow between leaving Koh Rong Island by ferry and then the bus, so I can plan my return to France? Or is a taxi an option? Thanks for your tips!

I’m heading back to Cambodia in a few weeks and had a couple of questions:

1/ the new airport Does anyone have info on the average tuk-tuk fare? From the old one, we’d usually pay between $7 and $10. Are we looking at the same range? It seems a bit farther, so maybe a little pricier. If you’ve got a rough idea of the time (always better to budget extra), I’m guessing around an hour?

2/ access to Preah Vihear temple I haven’t been back in a few years, but I was thinking of revisiting it this year. Given the border troubles, is access still allowed at the moment?

It’s all in the title. I’m starting to think about my destination for summer 2026, and Cambodia is currently at the top of my list. Among the spots frequently mentioned for a 2- or 3-week trip to Cambodia, Battambang comes up often. However, so far, I haven’t found any truly remarkable features that would justify spending 2 or 3 days (including travel and visits) in this city during a 3-week stay, especially since I’m primarily looking for stunning photography spots—whether natural landscapes, urban scenes, or architecture. Where can I find some enlightening documentation on Battambang to help shift my perspective? Sorry for exposing my ignorance about this city like this, but all the photos I’ve seen online and the travel journals I’ve read don’t really showcase what makes it appealing, even though the descriptions suggest it’s very charming.

I’d love to know if Battambang is worth the detour. If so, we’re thinking of taking a ferry across the lake, staying one night, and then flying to the islands for the second week. Bonjour, Hier matin pris à 07.30 am Bayon vip bus (aussi appelée Golden Bayon) de PP à Sihanoukville. Billet acheté la veille à leur bureau derrière le marché central. Siège solo n°11 réservé à l'achat) Ai choisi cet horaire car plus pratique pour arriver fin de matinée et parce qu'ils m'ont dit qu'à cet horaire, c'était les petits minibus (comme sur la photo) Y être pour 07h15.Prix 11 USD Partie à l'heure et arrivée 12h15 (le trafic était fluide) avec 2 arrêts pour toilettes ou snacks, un de 10 mns, l'autre de 20 mns) soit 4h45 de trajet total. Confortable. Bon conducteur. Clim. Parfait Leur bureau arrivée à Sihanoukville est sur une grande place, pratique, car à 10 mns à pied de l'embarcadère. A l'embarcadère, acheté billet one way 12 $ pour Samloen (Saracen Bay) avec C. T. V. G (voir photo ). N'ai pas voulu prendre l'aller retour revenant un peu moins cher au cas où je veuille utiliser une autre Cie au retour, selon les horaires) Bateau environ 30 passagers, rapide, 30 mns. Arrivée 14h30 CONCLUSION Très satisfaite de ces 2 Cies HEBERGEMENT Onederz Hostel (voir leur site Web, ils ont plusieurs GH sur la région, dont PP) à 8 mns de la jetée. Très satisfait de ce choix, car bord de très belle plage, convivial, beaucoup d'endroits où buller dans des hamacs ou autre, restaurant bon et pas cher (4$plat copieux), bar (bière 0,75$), wifi parfaite, dortoirs ou chambres, billard, bonne ambiance. Résa par leur site ou Agoda). A partir de 7 $/nuit JE RECOMMANDE CES TROIS PRESTATAIRES Bonne journée
