Voiture : - en dehors des grandes villes, est-ce que les trajets se font facilement (facilité de conduite, monde sur la route)? - Qu'en est-il du prix des péages (cher ou pas? péages que sur certains tronçons?)? - pour passer entre certaines îles j'ai vu qu'il fallait prendre des ferry : est-ce qu'ils sont assez régulier de manière à pouvoir arriver sur place sans devoir anticiper la réservation de billets? Et auriez-vous des exemples de prix (personne + voiture)?

Logements : - nous avons l'habitude de réserver au dernier moment nos logements de manière à pouvoir adapter notre itinéraire sans trop de contraintes. Est-ce possible au japon de choisir les logements le jour d'avant ou le jour même assez facilement? Y a t'il suffisamment de choix?

bonjour, nous envisageons de partir quasi un mois au japon de mi mai à mi juin 2020. Notre fils étant sur place nous souhaitons bien sur lui rendre visite. Il est dans sur l'ile d'Okaido, mais nous voulons en profiter pour visiter les incontournables de ce pays, une première pour nous. J'ai bien sur regarde les brochures touristiques mais j'avoue ne pas savoir par ou commencer. Je pense que nous arriverons à Tokyo en premier. mais après dans quel sens cela est il le plus judicieux (selon les sites incontournables ) (monter sur le nord ou descendre vers le sud avant de remonter sur Okaido pour repartir ensuite en direction de Tokyo ? nous aimerions utiliser les transports en train et louer une voiture pour avoir plus de liberté. Nous sommes plutôt nature que ville mais il y a des villes à ne pas manquer non ? Que me conseillez vous au vu de vos expériences japonaises ? merci à tous.

I’m currently planning our first trip to Japan. We’ll be traveling with our two teens, aged 16 and 17. We’re doing a pretty classic loop, but I’d still love to hear your valuable input.

Here’s the itinerary we’re considering:

- Tokyo (5 full days) - Fuji Yoshida (1 night) - Matsumoto (1 night) - Kamikochi / Gokayama (1 night) - Kanazawa (1 night) - Ine (1 night) - Himeji - Kyoto (5 full days)

We’re thinking of renting a car for the Japanese Alps portion.

We’re planning a 3-week trip, so I still have a few days to allocate—maybe in the Japanese Alps.

What do you think of the itinerary? The detour to Ine might seem odd, but I really want to include a coastal part—any thoughts? Is renting a car in Japan a total hassle?

And finally, is it absolutely necessary to book all accommodations in advance if we’re traveling in August? Or can I leave some flexibility for the Kanazawa / Ine / Himeji portion? Maybe if we really love a place and want to stay longer?

J1 : Nous arriverons à Osaka vers 9h et nous irons directement passer la journée à Nara (en bus, et laisserons les gros bagages à la consigne de la gare), puis train vers Kyoto le soir

J2-J3 : journées complètes à Kyoto, pour Fushimi inari et Arashiyama principalement, car je crois que le Kiyomizudera est en travaux actuellement ?

J4 : train Shinkansen de Kyoto à Tokyo, prendre une voiture de location et aller à Hakone J5 : départ d'Hakone vers le lac Kawaguchiko. J6 : départ de Kawaguschiko vers Nikko, promenade dans les temples J7 : randonnée vers le lac Chuzenji et cascade Kegon J8 : retour en voiture à Tokyo, après-midi en ville J9 : départ de l'aéroport de Tokyo

A quelle gare de Tokyo me conseillez-vous de descendre sachant qu'on viendra en train de Kyoto et qu'on louera une voiture, principalement pour sortir de Tokyo direction Hakone, et retour depuis Nikko ? Pour louer une voiture il faut passer par une agence pour traduire le permis de conduire, avez-vous des agences à recommander ? J'ai vu pas mal de publicités pour "vivre le japon" ?

I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴‍☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.

So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.

For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto

What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

Bonjour à tous et toutes, après avoir lu pas mal de discussions et glané des conseils, je sollicite vos regards experts sur notre trajet. Ce sera notre 2e voyage au japon et cette fois nous amenons nos enfants (11 et 14 ans). Nous arrivons le 20/02 à Tokyo et nous repartons le 7 mars d'Osaka. Le 1er voyage, nous sommes allés à Tokyo et Kyoto et on a un peu rayonné autour (Nara et Kuruma notamment). Pour ce 2e voyage, voici ce qu'on a commencé à prévoir. Nous voyagerons en transports en commun. Nous aimons bien rester qq nuits dans un même endroit et rayonner autour. Merci d'avance pour vos retours et précieux conseils :) - Arrivée à Tokyo le 20 février au soir - 5 nuits à Tokyo - départ pour les Alpes japonaises où nous aimerions passer 2 ou 3 nuits mais difficile de choisir. On a repéré Nozawa Onsen avec balade en raquette , voire ski :) et découverte du monkey parc mais aussi Matsumoto (mais les deux, ça risque d'être compliqué non ?). Faut (il s'arrêter à Nagano ou pas ? - Nous aimerions également aller à Kanazawa et/ou Takayama (idem : est ce qu'il vaut mieux choisir ? et lequel ?) 2 nuits je pense. - Ensuite nous prévoyons de descendre vers le sud. Nous souhaitons finir par Osaka et y passer 2 nuits (ou 3?). Il nous restera donc 4 à 5 nuits. Soit nous allons à Kyoto pour faire découvrir à nos enfants. Soit nous privilégions une autre découverte : Naoshima / Hiroshima et peut être plus de temps à Osaka ? + encore une option à laquelle on pense avant les alpes japonaises : s'arrêter à Hakone ou dans un endroit pour admirer le mont fuji...

Here are the routes I’m considering:

**Option 1: More mountain and nature-focused**

Tokyo: 8 nights, with day trips to Nikko and maybe the Izu Peninsula Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi/Mt. Fuji): 1 night. The place looks stunning, but I’m worried Mt. Fuji might not be visible due to the weather Kyoto: 6–7 nights (including a trip to Nara) Osaka: 1–2 nights, where I’d like to drop off my things to make the Kumano Kodo easier Kumano Kodo: 3 nights—an experience I haven’t seen much elsewhere, but I thought it sounded really interesting Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Takayama: 3 days Kanazawa: 3 days (From what I understand, the Osaka–Takayama–Kanazawa–Tokyo route is convenient for transport) Tokyo: 1 night (return)

Je finalise mon voyage d'une petite douzaine de jours au Japon à la fin du mois d'octobre prochain. Et j'ai une question pratique. J'arrive à 8h du matin le lundi 28 à Narita. Je loue une voiture et souhaite dormir le soir près du Mont Fuji. J'ai trois options de route et je ne sais pas laquelle choisir. Soit je fais un grand contournement de Tokyo par le nord et l'ouest, soit je traverse Tokyo, soit je passe la journée avec une balade dans la presqu'ile de Chiba et je traverse dans l'après-midi, peut être avec un ferry s'il y en a. Nous avons prévu de faire : - du 17 au 22 Avril : Tokyo (programme encore à définir) - du 22 au 24 Avril : Péninsule Izu (une nuit sur la côte est, une nuit sur la côte ouest) - du 24 au 29 : Kyoto (programme encore à définir) - du 29 au 30 : Kyoto / Narita pour partir le matin tranquillement en étant sur place

1/ Je suis en train de regarder les hébergements. Pour Tokyo et Kyoto : pas de souci Pour la péninsule d'Izu, nous envisageons d'aller de Tokyo à Atami en train le 22 au matin, puis de louer à Atami une voiture à rendre le 24 Avril. Pour l'instant, les sites de location de voiture ne me permettent pas de faire un réservation aussi lointaine

- Pouvez-vous me confirmer qu'il est possible de louer une voiture à la gare d'Atami ? et de la rendre à la gare d'Atami si on arrive par la route qui longe la côte ouest de la péninsule ?

- Si je pense avoir trouvé un hébergement pour la première nuit Côte Est, je galère beaucoup plus pour la côte ouest. Pouvez-vous m'aider ? ce que je trouve est : soit hors de prix, soit en japonais non traduit et inaccessible pour moi. Avez-vous de bonnes adresses sur la côte ouest à me conseiller pour 3 adultes et un prix aux alentours de 150 € la nuit, (pas en dortoir partagé)

2/ Pour Tokyo, nous avons un ado geek et gamer, qui voudrait trouver "des bons plans" et ne pas aller forcément dans les magasins courus par tous les touristes. où puis-je chercher ce type de "bons plans" ?

Il souhaiterait aussi qu'on accepte qu'il fasse un peu seul son shopping au moins une après-midi : même si je sais que le Japon est assez sûr : est-ce envisageable de laisser un ado seul dans un quartier (délimité bien sûr) de Tokyo ? Sachant que nous habitons dans une grande ville dans laquelle il sait aller seul... Mais Tokyo c'est différent.....la maman que je suis s'inquiète déjà.

3/ Pour le retour, nous pensons faire Kyoto/Narita le 29 Avril am, pour dormir à Narita ou alentours la dernière nuit et partir tranquillement à l'aéroport au matin (notre avion décolle à 12H55)

Je n'ai pas encore trop exploré Hyperdia, qui pour l'instant me paraît un peu obscur (mais je vais m'y mettre :) ) Quel temps moyen mettra-t-on pour faire ce trajet ? évidemment la question du JR Pass se posera, mais je reviendrai vers vous avec de prochaines questions à ce sujet, car j'en aurai évidemment plein !

Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Avec mon fils (14 ans) nous partons pour 12 jours au Japon, arrivée le 28 octobre au petit matin et départ 9 novembre. Je loue une voiture pour une balade, dans un premier temps. J'ai prévue deux nuits autour du Mont Fuji pour pouvoir en profiter une journée complète. Nous avons ensuite 5 jours pleins. J'aimerai assister à l'embrasement des érables (le Koyo). Je m'interroge sur où aller. La préfecture de Gifu, celle de Nagano ou alors partir au nord de Tokyo vers Nikko ? Qu'en pensez-vous ? 7 jours de pleine nature, auberges et Osen, randonnées et érables en feu (si possible !) Nous passerons les 5 derniers jour à Tokyo.

Bonjour, Je prépare un séjour au Japon prévu en octobre prochain et j'en profite pour remercier tous les contributeurs dont j'ai largement utilisé les commentaires pour préparer mon itinéraire. Je prévois de passer quelques jours sur Shikoku avec une voiture de location pour quitter un peu les sentiers battus: j'ai déjà quelques étapes en vue: Imabari pour faire un peu de vélo, Matsuyama, Takamatsu. Je souhaiterais aussi parcourir un peu la côte orientale entre Kochi et Naruto mais je trouve peu d'informations sur cette région. Est il facile de joindre en voiture Takamatsu à cette côte en traversant la vallée de l'Iya où je n'envisage pas forcément de m'arrêter ? Les villes de cette côte telles que Toyo, Mugi ou Minami présentent elles un intérêt pour un visiteur qui découvre le Japon ? Merci d'avance de votre aide

My partner is running the Tokyo Marathon on March 1st, 2026. So we’re planning a 3-week trip to Japan to include this event! We’ll likely be traveling from February 21st to March 14th.

Our current idea is to visit: 1) Kyoto 2) Tokyo 3) The Five Lakes region (e.g., Mt. Odake, Mitsutogeyama, Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Sai, Mt. Ryugatake, Myōjinyama...) 4) Kyushu (for example: Mt. Kujū, Mt. Aso, Eboshi-dake, Mt. Karakuni, Kirishima Mountains, Takachihonomine....)

We found a flight that would let us arrive in Osaka and depart from Kutakyushu. We really want to soak up Japanese culture but don’t want to spend all our time just in cities. Museums, exhibits, etc., aren’t really our thing, and we’d like to include some hikes.

1) Do you think this itinerary is realistic for 3 weeks? 2) In Kyushu, we’d like to rent a car—do you think it’d also be a good idea to rent one for the Five Lakes region? 3) I’d love to stay in a temple to take part in monks’ rituals. Any tips on that?

Anyway, this is just a very rough first draft, and before diving in completely, I’d love to get some initial feedback, your thoughts, and your critiques ;) Thanks in advance! :)

After several trips to Tokyo and the surrounding areas, as well as Osaka Bay, we’re heading to Northern Kyushu for a week in mid-October (we’ll be in China the other week). We’re a couple with two kids, aged 7 and 9. We’ll arrive at Saga Airport and plan to stay there for a few days to explore Arita, Imari, Karatsu, Hirado, and Dazaifu. We’re thinking Saga isn’t too touristy, so it might be a good choice to find accommodation for 3 or 4 days there and immerse ourselves in a typical Japanese city in the evenings with fewer tourists. 1) Is this a good idea?

My second question is: 2) What are the best neighborhoods in Saga where I can find accommodation (preferably an Airbnb) with free parking but still close to the city center, please? 3) Would you recommend Fukuoka instead?

4) Here’s my first draft of the itinerary:

Saga Airport (we leave straight away) → Beppu Onsen (2-hour drive, we stay one night + Mount Yufu) → Kurokawa Onsen (we stay one night + Mount Kuju) → we pass by Mount Aso (just a drive-around and short walk) → then we go to Suizenji Jojuen in Kumamoto (park in a paid parking lot nearby) → return to Saga in the evening, where we stay this time. Stay in Saga for 3 or 4 nights in an Airbnb with convenient parking in the city center, not too far out, and explore the surrounding areas (Imari, Arita, Karatsu, Hirado, Dazaifu...).

Saga to Nagasaki (minimum 2 nights, ideally 3). Then return to Saga. 5) Same question: where to stay in Nagasaki in accommodation where we can park the car for free and be near or easily accessible to the city center? 6) For all these places, what do you recommend doing with the kids?

Great to be back here—it’s been years!

We’re heading to Japan with the family in mid-July and will mostly explore Kyushu for this second trip. We’ll wrap up with 3 days on Yakushima, but we’re planning to fly back to Osaka from Tanegashima after stopping by the space center. To get from Yakushima to Tanegashima, I’ve found two options: - Depart from Miyanoura port and go to Shimama with the Taiyo II ferry, but it arrives a bit too late for us (it gets in at 10:05 AM, and we need to be at the space center by 10:30 AM…) - Depart from Anbo port, but in that case, the boat goes to Nishinoomote, which is all the way at the north of the island—super inconvenient since the space center is at the very south!

Does anyone here know if there’s another way to make the Miyanoura/Shimama trip besides the Taiyo II ferry (like a private boat, a fisherman’s boat, or something else)? It feels silly to go all the way to the north of the island just to head right back down…

What a joy to be back on this forum that I’ve browsed for so many years :-)!

I’m heading to Japan with my partner in November 2025. This will be my second trip there and his first.

I was planning to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, which I haven’t visited before, and from there, check out Shirahone Onsen and then hike from Magome to Tsumago. However, after reading several travel journals, I’ve realized that the village of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings look amazing. Back in 2006, I visited Takayama, which I loved, but I don’t want to stay there again.

To visit the places mentioned above (Shirahone Onsen, Shirakawa-go, Magome, and Tsumago), I’m thinking that a car might be more convenient than public transport, especially for getting from Shirakawa-go to Magome. Could you confirm if that’s the case? If so, is it easy to rent a car for a few days to do a loop starting from Matsumoto?
