Where to go in Nepal in April to avoid the haze?

Hi there, I’ve been in Nepal for a week now, still in the Kathmandu Valley, after two months in India. I’m discovering the haze problem in the valleys (Kathmandu, Pokhara), which I hadn’t anticipated at all. It’s really frustrating not to see any peaks. I was planning to go to Jomsom and also do the Poonhill Trek from Pokhara, but I’m not even sure if it’ll be clear there. Without going to high altitude or doing a long trek, is there a place where I might have a chance of seeing the mountain panoramas? Thanks for your help!

At this time of year, the haze (smog) is pretty much constant in the KTM valley and in India (check the pollution levels on IqAir—it’s pretty obvious).

In the mountains, the "haze" is less of an issue, but there’s still a bit of a veil in the air.

If you head up to Jomsom or the Ghorepani/Poon Hill area, it’ll be clearer (you’ll also have way less pollution than in KTM), though there’s still a slight veil during the day (the view will be clearer very early in the morning).

Last March, in the Khumbu region, the weather was often awful with rain, snow, and fog—zero visibility. Firsthand experience... Back in the day, the weather was usually milder during this season. I have a Chinese friend who’s attempting Everest right now (summit push). I just got photos of a sunny Tengboche. Fingers crossed she brings the good weather with her. 😇 Another time, at the end of February, no planes were taking off for Lukla due to bad weather. We "ended up" in the Langtang region, where it was bright sunshine. Something to consider for you, then... This area is very accessible from KTM and not too far away. Otherwise, as Cicipati mentioned, the lower Mustang around Jomsom enjoys much better weather. The surroundings are stunning. Generally speaking, you still have a better chance of good weather from late October onward.

Hi there, Thanks for your feedback. It finally started raining after several days of unproductive storms. That clears the air a bit, at least temporarily. Anything’s better than the smog! It also let us breathe easier and finally enjoy some great mountain views (on the way to Pokhara).
