Before taking out additional insurance, check if you're not already covered by a premium bank card and/or personal assistance often included in home or car insurance.

For me: Visa Premier covers up to 155,000 € and MACIF Assistance covers up to 80,000 €. The two are usually stackable (at least that's the case between Visa and MACIF, so 235,000 € total). When I asked Inter-Mutuelles Assistance (which represents MACIF), they told me they'd never had a situation exceeding that amount without requiring repatriation, and in that case, the problem no longer arises.

You can download a coverage certificate in English from both websites.

Be careful—standard insurance like Mondial Assistance or credit card coverage doesn’t cover so-called "extreme" sports. Trekking, horseback riding, mountain biking, etc., all count as sports that aren’t covered.

During my last trip, I went with Heymondo, which cost me around 60 € for coverage up to 1 million € over 4 weeks. Their system is super convenient—you get an app that lets you contact them directly if there’s an issue, so you don’t have to hunt for contact details or speak another language. Plus, Heymondo offers an option that covers sports for not much extra (for example, I was covered for 60 €).

Sometimes $235K isn't enough at all! Healthcare costs are exorbitant in the US. You need insurance that covers up to $1M, and some even cover up to $2M.

Go for insurance providers like Europ Assistance, Chapka, Mondial... Credit cards usually partner with these companies, but they drastically lower the coverage limit...

Personally, I have Europ Assistance that covers my whole family for the year, as well as all our vehicles. If we travel even just twice, it pays off. Well, it’s never really "paid off," but it ends up being cheaper...

Just to give you an idea, rattlesnake antivenom costs at least $35,000 per injection without any other care or hospital fees, and sometimes multiple injections are needed.

You need to check the contract. Each bank can set its own terms regarding coverage and exclusions.

For the amount, even if it's well below what the US healthcare system might charge, no insurance will agree to pay out such a sum, and repatriation will likely be necessary in my opinion—I’m just sharing my thoughts here.

For Utah, there’s the Search and Rescue option, a state-run program available to tourists.

Arnaud, there are so many cases where repatriation just isn’t possible! The insurance has no choice in those situations. That’s why coverage limits at major companies have increased like this over the past 5-6 years.
