Hi, is there a way to take a ferry to Madeira Island by van or small camper? If so, from which Mediterranean port? Thanks

hi there ehhhh Madeira Essaouira is already 700 km, which should be around 500 nautical miles. Given that the North Atlantic has a lot of swell, so there are big waves and the sea must often be rough, I’d be surprised if a boat could transport vehicles. I’d have to see it to believe it. Otherwise, with DirectFerries, there *is* a ferry, but it’s from Porto Santo.

Hi there,

There used to be a ferry from Portimão, but it’s no longer running... Big corruption issues, etc. So, you’ll have to fly now...

Unfortunately, there’s no direct ferry from the Mediterranean to Madeira, whether by van or camper. The island is pretty isolated in the Atlantic, so there are still no regular routes for that kind of crossing from the continent.

The only option that existed in the past was a route between Portimão (southern Portugal) and Madeira, operated by Naviera Armas, but it hasn’t been running for a while (and even back then, it was seasonal and not always reliable).

So, if you really want to get there with your van or camper, the easiest way is still to take a ferry to the Canary Islands (from Cadiz, Spain) and then possibly look for a crossing to Madeira… but even that’s complicated, long, and not always open to vehicles.

Otherwise, the most realistic option: rent a van directly in Madeira. There are a few local agencies that do this, and the island is great to explore that way, even if it’s small.

Hi,

My reply is probably too late, but I was in Madeira in September (2025) and saw one (and only one) van (a VW LT31) that came from continental Europe—more specifically, Germany. So a crossing must be possible 😉

Hello,

Probably by cargo ship, but it’s a bit complicated...
