Hi everyone, I’m starting to look into small solo cruises, for now in November. It’s my first cruise, so I’m a bit nervous. Anyone potentially interested in 7 days in Italy, Tunisia, and Spain? If you’ve got any tips, I’d love to hear them. Looking forward to reading your replies

Hi Occi,

I’m a "regular" on solo cruises. 😇 My next departure in November, on an itinerary that matches what you described, will be my 10th cruise and my 6th solo one.

Don’t hesitate to ask any questions you might have—I’ll probably be able to answer quite a few. 😉

Good evening Poulpi, thanks for your message! 👍 My choice is MSC—it seems the ship is newer than Costa’s? Do you have any tips for a first cruise? I’ve made sure my ID and passport are up to date, and I’ve got travel insurance for the admin side... Which cruise did you pick, if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks! 😊

No indiscretion here 😉 I’m boarding on November 9th in Marseille on the MSC Splendida, heading to Genoa, Naples, Palermo, La Goulette (Tunis), and Barcelona.

To answer your question about the age of the ships, I’ve never sailed with Costa, so I wouldn’t be able to give good advice. As for MSC, the fleet is quite varied—from the oldest ships, which are also the smallest, to the newest ones, which are big vessels. It’s certain that the latter will offer more options for entertainment, bars, and fun activities on board. But the older ships are far from outdated or lacking in activities—quite the opposite, in fact. Really, everyone can find what they’re looking for based on their expectations on most ships. For me, when I choose a cruise, it’s a mix of the stops and the ship that determines my choice. If a route has more sea days, I’d lean toward a slightly bigger ship.

On the administrative side, you summed it up well: valid ID and passport. Personally, depending on the storage space, I always leave either my ID or passport in the cabin safe. That way, I’m sure I’ll always have ID available if something happens during a stop.

As for tips... it’s hard because there are so many topics—you’ll have to guide me on what questions you have.

A first one, though, about luggage. I always pack a mix of outfits to be comfortable during stops and slightly dressier clothes for on board. I also always bring a backpack. It’s handy during stops and on embarkation day. When you board, you drop off your luggage at check-in, and it’s delivered to your cabin later in the day... with no exact time given. The backpack lets me keep a few essentials with me, including a swimsuit in case I feel like taking a dip as soon as I board 😎

As for excursions, I rarely book the ones offered by the cruise line. Since many ports are in the city, I usually just head out on my own and wander around a bit randomly. That way, I get a taste of a destination, and if I like it, I’ll come back later on my own to spend a few days and explore deeper. But on that note, everyone has their own way of traveling.

In the end, whether it’s excursions or onboard activities, everyone finds what works for them based on their own expectations.

Thanks for your very complete reply! I’m on the same trip, but I’m on vacation on November 14th… too bad, meeting up in person would’ve been great and reassuring! I think I have the same approach—walking around the cities should be enough 😊 and enjoying the ship at the same time. I need to make up my mind 😄

I was hesitating between leaving on the 9th or the 16th. And what made me decide on the 9th was that there are discounts on the single supplement... 😊

Definitely, I think the balcony cabin is a good choice! Do you have any other cruises planned?
PO Poulpi69 ·
After trying interior cabins, ocean-view ones, and balconies, I definitely prefer balcony cabins.

No other trips planned at the moment, even though I have some destination ideas. But most of the time, I kind of hunt for promotions to make up my mind lol

You're right, do you have any reliable sites for bookings? I only check MSC Cruises and Costa’s websites, but maybe that’s a mistake.
PO Poulpi69 ·
To scout out itineraries, I use the MSC website. After that, for booking, I’ve stuck with Azur Croisière—I always deal with the same advisor there (Sandra, not that I’m naming names). She knows my preferences, and since the agency is affiliated with MSC, she always finds me the best rates available—ones you wouldn’t necessarily spot on the MSC site.

Oh wow, 685 € for a balcony cabin is really interesting!

Just a heads-up: the price shown on the website might not include the single supplement, but it also won’t account for any discounts you might be eligible for. That’s why I always email to ask for a quote, and every time, they call me to go over it together, refine and clarify my request, and suggest the best options. That’s also what I love about this agency—beyond the fact that they specialize in cruises, it’s not just an automated online sales engine. You get real travel agents to chat with, who’ll give you great advice.

Anyway, thanks again for your precious help. Really a shame we won’t be on the same cruise! 🚢

With Plair 😎 And who knows, we might cross paths at the port on November 16th... depending on your boarding time, of course 😉
