I'm looking for a small, not-too-touristy restaurant in Fort Kochi. Do you know one not too far from Jacob Road? Thanks

hi there I’d love to understand why tourists look for spots without tourists... and wonder if you’ll even recognize Indian tourists in restaurants..... just so you know, most tourists here are Indian. If you’re trying to avoid tourists, skip Jacob Road—it’ll be easier around Thoppumpady or Thevara (there are two big bridges connecting the two areas). Enjoy your meal!

Hi Monique, I’ve known Kochi for a long time and go back regularly. The restaurants there are usually packed with Western tourists, and we much prefer the small, local eateries—which are hard to find in Kochi. I know one or two spots we go to regularly when we’re in the city, but that’s not many, and I was just wondering if anyone had a little gem to recommend to mix things up. Indian tourists don’t bother us—we’re in India, after all! And I don’t need a lecture...

Hi Anne, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lecture. So, since you know Kochi well, check out the area around Kochi Kers Theatre or Cherlai Market, but make sure to steer clear of Jacob Road, which runs from Veli to the Basilica. Otherwise, as I mentioned earlier, you can find what you’re looking for in Thoppumpady and Thevara! Have a great trip!

Thanks Monique, we’ll check that out. We just arrived in Kochi and tonight we went to Anantha Bhavan Inn, which we already knew and still love. Pure veg Indian cuisine in a patio with a big tree... Really good, cheap, and on Jacob Rd...

Awesome! Enjoy! Greetings to Kochi, which I miss! It’s been 5 years since I left Kerala. This restaurant didn’t exist back then—I lived in the area until 2018!

Good evening, I'm currently at Anantha Bhavan. As luck would have it, I just logged into VF. Like many of you, it seems, I've been coming to India for a long time and regularly. I don't post on the forum very often. I'm thinking of leaving Kochi this Saturday or Sunday. Maybe we could meet up? I had lunch at Atharva restaurant on Palace Road, not far from the synagogue. It's popular with Indian locals. Anyway, maybe we'll meet or maybe we won't... In any case, I wish you all a good evening. Yves.

Hey Yves! Did you have a good trip? No two-hour interrogation this time? Plus, they’re also heading to Kannur... You’re bound to run into each other!

Hi Jean-Marie, First of all, have a great trip. So, no police issues since I got a new passport with a new visa. It's been smooth sailing. However, I arrived in Mumbai over 16 hours late because of a delay leaving Paris. I missed my connection in Munich. So, waiting around and a detour via Dubai. For general info, it's strongly advised not to book with two or more different airlines for a trip split into multiple legs. Example: if my entire flight hadn’t been with Lufthansa, a second airline might’ve left me stranded in Munich, and I would’ve had to buy a new ticket to finish the journey.

Hi Jean Marie, and have a great trip back to Thailand! It’s too bad you left just as we’ll be in Kerala... Hope you have a wonderful stay in Chiang Rai and the surrounding area. And that you’ll give us a little recap afterward, despite what you said...

We’re currently in Kochi, where we spent a great day visiting the different exhibits as part of the biennale. There are several along Bazar Road, which lets you step into old houses and warehouses and discover little gardens overlooking the fishing port. We’d been to Mattancherry several times before but hadn’t been able to go inside the buildings...

Tomorrow, we’re taking the train to Kannur! !

Hi Yves, It's funny, we ate at the same restaurant—maybe we saw each other but didn’t know it!!! We go there every evening. Yesterday at lunchtime, we had lunch at a little dive near Aspinwall House where part of the Biennale is being held... Thanks for your message...

Hi Anne, As I’ve already told you, it’s not that I’m leaving when you arrive, but rather that you’re arriving when I’m leaving. I think this is the third missed opportunity... Yet last year, I did tell you to contact me well in advance so we could try to arrange a meet-up. But you never followed up...

Tomorrow, we’re taking the train to Kannur!

It’s really too bad because, given how slow the trains are, I assume you’ll arrive in Kannur by the end of the day. And Sunday is the day I leave, so I really won’t be in the right mental state or have the time to host you—or even meet up to get to know each other...

Have a great stay in Kerala...

Hi Anne, Thanks for your reply. I’ll be back at the same Anutha Bhavan tonight. The place is nice, the food works for me, and it’s close to my guesthouse. So if that works for you, maybe we could meet up there for a bit or even grab dinner together? If so, let me know around what time you’re planning to go. I’ll adjust. Have a great day.

I’m jealous! We could’ve met up at my place (all four of us) with better planning ;)

True, that could’ve been a great option. Oh well! Let’s just say it’s only postponed... Safe travels and happy preparations.

Yes, Jean Marie, but we always decide at the last minute and we plan our trips only a short time in advance since we’re old now 😄 and we don’t know if we’ll be fit enough to go back to India... Besides, we hadn’t even booked the train to Kannur and there weren’t any seats left until this morning. Our wonderful landlady managed to find us a tatkal ticket, luckily! Phew! We’ll arrive tomorrow around noon in Kannur. I totally understand that you can’t host us and I’ll say bon voyage again and thanks once more...

Yeah, it’d be great to have dinner together. We’ll be there around 8 PM. If you wanna spot us, there’s a photo of us on our site: un endroit où aller.fr

Great! See you tonight at 8 PM then. I don’t have a photo, but I have a (white) beard, and I’m wearing a white shirt too. Have a good afternoon.

And where are you staying in Kannur, and what are you planning to do there tomorrow afternoon/evening?

I had replied to you in a private message, but you probably didn’t see it. I think you must have arrived safely in Thailand by now...

I got to Bangkok pretty exhausted this morning after 30 hours without sleep, including 20 hours of travel. What a nightmare at check-in at Kannur Airport (an airport to avoid!!!! I'll explain in my Kerala travel journal) where I almost couldn't leave because of the incompetence—and above all, the stupidity and lack of training—of the young guy who helped me... Then the same thing happened at security... Same old story: underpaid, so low education levels in recruitment, no training, and on top of that, a cultural tendency to be narrow-minded and... brainwashed...
