Hi everyone,

I’m planning to return to Japan for 15 days in April. This will be my second trip there. I’m starting to think about my itinerary.

I arrive in Tokyo in the evening and will spend one night there before taking the train to Hiroshima. I’ll stay in Hiroshima for 2 nights. Then, I’m heading to Kyoto (there are still so many beautiful things I want to see there), and I think I’ll stay for 3 nights. I also want to go back to Nara to visit the Pink Temple (probably in the morning before heading back to Kyoto).

And after that? I’d like to return to Hakone to try and catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (I didn’t see it last time—it was cloudy). I’m thinking of staying one night there, probably in Odawara.

And then? I’ll head back to Tokyo and take the train to explore the surrounding areas and spend the day at some sites?

While in Tokyo, I want to visit Yokohama. I went to Kamakura last time and really loved it, but I don’t think I’ll go back.

I’ll end my trip in Tokyo, with my second-to-last night at the Muji Hotel and my last night near the airport.

That’s the plan so far—I’m open to your suggestions and itinerary tips!

Thanks in advance.

Hi there :)

What was your route like during your first trip to Japan? :) What are you really looking for on this second trip? More cultural, nature, urban, countryside... or a bit of everything? :)

Hi there, I agree with Chah. It's hard to give advice without knowing your interests and fitness level. If you enjoy hiking, why not consider climbing Mt. Fuji? We had the same weather issue in Hakone. As a result, we don’t have any distant photos, but we did make it to the summit for sunrise. There’s no technical difficulty, but good physical condition is definitely needed. We explored around Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Atami. We really loved Osaka and even spent a night in a monastery nearby. Atami is a lovely seaside resort that lets you discover the Izu Peninsula. From there, we took the train to Hakone and Mt. Fuji. Of course, in April, I don’t think swimming is an option, but it’s off the beaten path. Our trip was in 2016, and I didn’t keep a travel journal, but if any spots interest you, I can give you more details. Happy planning!

Hi Charlotte,

I’ve been to Kyoto, Osaka, Hakone, and Tokyo.

I kind of love it all at once ☺️—why choose? I also want to spend a night in a town not too far from Tokyo and enjoy an onsen.

Best, Laetitia

Hi there,

So hiking really isn’t my thing. I enjoy walking, but climbing Mount Fuji doesn’t appeal to me at all. I’ve noted Atami (for the onsens if I’m not mistaken).

Thanks for your reply.

Hi there :)

For Mount Fuji, you might want to consider heading to Kawaguchiko, which has clearer views, or even Shizuoka!

Near Tokyo, I’d recommend Kawagoe :)

And if I had to give you one last recommendation, it’s to visit Kyushu Island—it’s amazing, but it would require some major adjustments to your itinerary! ^^

Hello,

Thanks, I’ll take note of that. I’ll consider the Kawaguchiko option. Thanks for these great tips. Best regards

Hello! It’s been a little while since I last joined the discussion. I’ll give a general reply after reading all the posts. Climbing Mount Fuji is a no-go since access to the mountain isn’t allowed in April. Since two weeks fly by, it’s essential to plan your itinerary carefully before you leave. Personally, I don’t leave anything to chance—I book hotels in advance and have a few restaurants in mind for each stop. Since everyone’s responsible for their own trip based on their preferences, I won’t suggest a specific itinerary, even though I’ve been to Japan about thirty times and traveled from Hokkaido to Ishigaki. That said, I *will* recommend visiting Kanazawa, a beautiful city that’s easy to reach from Kyoto and lies on a different rail route to Tokyo. From Tokyo, why not take a little trip to Nikko to see the stunning Tokugawa shoguns’ mausoleums... or step back in time at Nokogiriyama for some breathtaking views. If you’re looking for sightseeing ideas, I have a small website where I’ve described over 750 places I’ve discovered in Japan. It’s called https://www.soleil-rouge.org/ Happy planning, and most of all: have a great trip!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I’ll keep that in mind. I really want to organize my trip well to make the most of my time. I’ll note Kanazawa for this trip. I think I’ll save Nikko for another time.

Thanks anyway.

Hi everyone,

My plans are coming together and changing a bit.

I’m not sure anymore whether I should start my trip in Hiroshima or go somewhere else. The day I arrive, I’ll stay overnight in Tokyo to catch a train the next day. - It’ll be early in my trip, for two nights.

Then I’ll head to Kyoto for 4 nights.

After that, Izu for one night (leaving Kyoto for Izu). I’m not going to Hakone anymore and switched to Izu instead. Hopefully, I’ll see Mount Fuji from Izu!

Then back to Tokyo for the end of my trip.

Which destination would you suggest for the start?

Your advice is very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out again because I’m still figuring out my itinerary.

I’ll spend my first two days in Kobe, then head to Kyoto for 4 nights. After that, I’m wondering where I can spend one night before returning to Tokyo.

I’m starting to think I’ll skip seeing Mount Fuji. I wanted to go somewhere other than Hakone (from Kyoto), so I’d love to hear your ideas.

But now I’m wondering—where should I go?

Should I spend a night in Yokohama? Or maybe Kamakura (and try to see Mount Fuji)? I’d love to hear your suggestions. Just to clarify, I’ll be in Japan during the second half of April.

Thanks in advance.
