Hi there, we're in Faranelli, Gambia. We're at Tandem and only have 7 days left on our passports. Can you tell us if we can leave the country via the east? From the town of Basse Santa Su to Velingara in Senegal. There seems to be a road, but is it a border post? I can't find an answer... Thanks so much in advance! Claude & Liliane

From what I remember, there are only two border crossings between Gambia and Senegal. One towards Banjul and the other near Farafina. So you’ll need to cross the Farafina bridge and then head towards Velingara. It takes just a few hours—like half a day max. Not sure about cycling, but it’s not many kilometers. I’ve crossed there twice before the bridge was built...

Safe travels.

A huge thank you for this quick response—this forum is really amazing for getting info fast! We crossed the border at Farafenni, which was quite busy, in about an hour. Too bad we can’t head east. We’re planning to go as far as River Gambia National Park. Is that a good idea? This means we’ll have to make a round trip due to the lack of accommodation in southern Gambia. Best regards, Béatrice, Claude, and Liliane

Claude and Liliane, I wish you an amazing bike tour...

An hour is great...

I don’t know this park. I went straight on to Ziguinchor, and especially Oussouye and Affiniam, in the bolongs. You can load bikes onto the village boats if that inspires you.

Hi there, and yes, with pleasure—we stopped in Afiniam and connected to Bignona via a gorgeous dirt road with stunning landscapes and villages. Were we far from Thionck? (Just trying to place it.) This lovely tandem ride was our first discovery of Africa. It was a success. Thanks, we’ll keep your address—it’d be a real pleasure to come back, but we’re trying to mix up our destinations. Happy fishing! Claude & Liliane

I loved Affiniam, and in Bignona, I had two tunics made by a tailor at the market in one evening, with fabric I bought after getting off the ferry in Gambia—so many memories.

Hi Claude, Liliane 😊

Yes, there’s an official border post between Basse Santa Su (Gambia) and Vélingara (Senegal) to the east. You can exit Gambia via this route, as long as you’re within the allowed time on your visa/stamp (your 7 days).

A few key points: ✅ Double-check your entry date to avoid overstaying the 7 days. ✅ Make sure you get both the exit stamp (Gambia) and entry stamp (Senegal). ⏳ Try to cross during the day (hours can vary). ⏱️ Allow some extra time—border formalities can be slow.

This crossing is usually less busy than the Trans-Gambia route, so it’s often simpler, but the facilities are more basic.

If you need a reliable contact on the Senegal side for a transfer or practical info once you’ve crossed, some travelers use Lazare Taxi Private Driver (punctual and experienced with long-distance trips). 📞 +221 77 158 66 03

Safe travels to you both and happy adventures! 🌍🚐
