Two weeks with a host family in Mongolia

Hey everyone! So, I’m planning to head to Mongolia in April 2025 for two weeks (I know, it’s pretty short, but work leaves me no choice!). That’s why I don’t want to waste any time! It’s not a big deal if I can’t see the whole country or miss some must-see spots—my main goal for my trips is meeting families, staying with locals, discovering the culture, the way of life, and everything else! That’s what travel is all about for me. So if you know of any families (preferably nomadic) who’d be open to hosting me, I’m all ears! I never go through guides or agencies—usually, I connect with locals who need a little extra money and know their region well. They’re happy to spend the day showing me around! Thanks so much for your help! Fabrice.

Hi there, I did an 8-day horse trek around Kharkhorin, spending each night with nomadic families in their yurts. It was a truly incredible experience! There’s no internet and network coverage is rare in the Mongolian steppes. If you can’t find a nomadic family through word of mouth, I recommend the agency Horse Trails. I went through them—they’re a Franco-Mongolian agency that organizes all kinds of excursions, from 2-day to over 10-day horseback trips, or even immersive stays with nomadic families. Okay, thanks for your feedback! I’ll try to get in touch with people without going through an agency, but I’ll keep the agency’s name in mind. Thanks again

You could contact mejet69@yahoo.com in English since, as a driver-guide, we’ve done 7 trips with him. He should know some good nomadic families ready to host you. I understood you don’t want an agency, but no worries—you’ll compensate your host family directly! With him, we always sleep with nomadic families.

You explain what you’d like to do, and together you’ll figure out what’s possible or not. Mejet is reliable, so don’t hesitate to reach out—it doesn’t cost anything!

If needed, he can also pick you up on arrival or host you at his modest guest house. Anyway, you’ll sort out the details as you go.

have a great trip, happy holidays, and happy New Year

Hi Fabrice, You can trust the Mejet guide recommended by Méridiana. About ten years ago, I went to Mongolia, and with him, I organized my trip, which included a stay of a few days with nomads. He has contacts with nomads who host guests in yurts under rustic conditions (but there’s photovoltaic electricity in the evening). The food is provided by one of the women in the family, and you help out as much as you can with the livestock when they’re brought in. You’ll be able to do more than I could (my back won’t allow it) like riding a horse to find the stray herds—they need to milk the mares in the morning. I took care of the calves and went to the stream to rinse the milk pails. In Ulaanbaatar, I also stayed in Mejet’s guesthouse, and he came with his wife to pick me up at the airport. In short, since you have a fairly short time, you can plan ahead with Mejet via his email. So, you’ll be in good hands with him... He’s an independent guide without an agency, so his services are more affordable than those of agencies. Have a great trip over there! Carassou
